Brandon Boykin's return for a touchdown was one of the few bright spots for Georgia. (Associated Press)
Play-action.
Bootleg.
I just thought I’d throw out a couple of basic offensive football terms that Willie Martinez apparently isn’t familiar with.
As a result, Georgia made Jonathan Crompton look like an all-conference quarterback Saturday as Tennessee repeatedly ran the same basic plays over and over again to great success in a 45-19 butt-kicking.
Not that the loss can be pinned entirely on Georgia’s defense. Because the Dogs’ offense put on one of the most toothless, inept performances since … last week’s first half. No running game to speak of. And this week precious little passing game. You remember all the talk about how Georgia’s offensive line was terrible at run-blocking but good at pass protection? Today they weren’t even good at that, as Joe Cox repeatedly had to throw the ball away or had it batted down. Volunteer defenders spent more time in Georgia’s backfield than any of the three tailbacks the Dogs used in vain. The Dogs basically took the third quarter off.
Backup quarterback Logan Gray did finally get to play quarterback … and showed us little. He did complete his first pass as a Bulldog, to Marlon Brown (who finally got to make some catches), but generally threw poorly.
The only Bulldogs unit that had any positives in this game was, incredibly, the special teams, which accounted for most of Georgia’s points thanks to a 102-yard kickoff return by Brandon Boykin, a blocked punt for a safety by Zach Renner and a long field goal by Blair Walsh in addition to the pick-6 by Bacarri Rambo. Even then, the Dogs still had a terrible kickoff return that saw the Vols begin a drive in Dogs territory.
What else? Missed tackles galore. Tennessee receivers continually wide open. Poor play calling by Mike Bobo. And, again, Martinez appeared to be clueless.
And the dean of SEC coaches was outcoached by Lane Kiffin, who now has the right to say whatever he wants to when it comes to the Dogs.
Kirby Smart, please come home!

One other suggestion, have our defense play both ways as they scored as much as the offense today.

i think i finally agree that willie needs to go. his inability to adjust is amazing. the first drive they had i could see that silly play action bootleg working a few times but after that we needed to make a simple adjustment and willie didnt see it. he and probably bobo need to go.
our offense is pathetic, but i dont blame bobo, i blame cox. i like the kid and think he will make a great coach one day, but he needs to step aside and let someone else get a shot.

Is Coach Richt trying to get fired? This team just does not look like the best and most effective players are starting. This team looks like they are not prepared. This team does not look like they are ready to play football. I do not see any whizz bang strategy or technique being executed from this team. All I see are individual performances.
This all is very disheartening. Where have the Georgia Bulldogs gone?

Looks like Fabris will work another week. His team did it all.
With that said, the dawgs hit a buzzsaw- a more determined team trying to prove they belong again. And, guess what, they do. With their new-found confidence, Tennessee will grow into a fine season. Wish I could say that for the Dawgs. It may take a week or three to get over this game, but they will. I won’t give up hope for a strong finish like yesteryear. Oh, and color me blind.

As I’ve said before, I’m not one to yell, “fire the coach!” everytime the Dawgs lose a game but when you continually bring in the talent Georgia has, seasons like this one shouldn’t happen. We’re half way through the year and we’re getting worse. We can’t win every game and can’t win the SEC and MNC every single year but even during rebuilding years we should still be contenders. Something is seriously wrong and you can’t blame the wind this week.

Well………..it seems that we deserve all the things St. Simons has been saying about us. Is there something about the 10 Year Rule in the SEC? It seems that no coach can hold things together for much longer than that. Our problem right now is that both coordinators have got to go, and CMR is too nice and kind to his personal buddies to swing the ax. I hope he does, because if he doesn’t, we will be battling Montana State in the Swamp Bowl. And just one more thing———-as recruiting comes down to the wire, why are we only pursuing these little 160-pound scat-backers? We need LINEMEN! Then we need more linemen, and after that, more linemen.

People, lets not put all the blame on Willie! How about our offense? How about we put some blame on the man that is ultimately responsible for both? Yea, I said it. CMR is also doing a lousy job right now. We have plenty of talent but are the laughing stock of the SEC. Every week we make the opponents QB look like a Heisman candidate while struggling to score points. This is the most embarrasing team i’ve seen at Georgia and i’ve been a fan for a long time. CMR- make some changes or do the loyal fans a favor and find another program.

I am a graduate of UGA (96) and have been a fan since I went to the California game in 1981; this does not make me a “great fan” nor someone who believes I am always right; I’m not. But I did suffer through both our boy Ray, and the savior Jim, so I know suffering.
That said, I was all prepared to tell all you punk-a$$ dawg fans who were throwing in the towel after OSU to suck it after we kicked some Tenn butt. However, I am man enough to admit I was wrong.
The only thing, THE ONLY THING, that has kept us in any of these game is the great players we have, the great atheletes. These guys so obviously have no coaching; they are just making plays because they can. They don’t know where to go on D, or what to do on O. It’s just so demoralizing I can’t even function.
I think, for the most part, Dawg fans are homers and bandwagon types (don’t smirk, you are because you thought the world was over after OSU, the first freeking game of the year). We have had a great run for the last few years, and I’ve come to expect it, like most of you. But we are not FSU in 1995, we have not won everything every year. I don’t think CMR should be fired, I DON’T. He’s a good tactition, but he needs to surround himself with better people. Go out and get an all-pro defensive guy; get a creative O guy; tell the special teams to kick it to the end zone every time. BE A COACH. Listen, I know you love these coaches Mark, and I know they have families, Lord knows I know, but you HAVE to let them go. We have too many great players who are not being coached to waste them on this team. Our recruting will soon dry up; CMR is a good man, he’s a good coach, his assistants are crap though.

I have been a big Mark Richt supporter. RedandBlack may have a point about him wanting to get fired. Maybe with Bowden on his wau out, he sees a way to get back to Florida State. That’s the only explanation I can see in how far this team has gone down in the last 2 years.
They have absolutely no spark, and no heart. When was the last time you saw a Da. defensive player either drive someone backwards or at least stop them in their tracks. Even when they hit someone, they are carried two – five yards down field
There need to be some BIG changes in this staff at the end of the year.

I still love the “dawgs – always have, and I always will. However, this is a poorly coached mediocre football team with one great player. We may end up at 4-8. If we end up with a losing record or at 6-6, I think CMR is o.k. for at least one season, but several assistant coaching changes will have to be made. Even if we end up at 7-5 (a BIG “if” at this point), I think Martinez and our Special Teams coach are history…

At this point Evans and Adams have to go to CMR and request that for the betterment of the program CWM and CMB be relieved of his there respective duty’s. If CMR does not oblige this request the nit is time for this University to move in another direction. No longer can he sit on the sideline looking oblivious to the fact the team is getting ran off the field and seem so care free. It is high time that someone is held accountable. CMR is not capable of getting in the faces of his staff or players. This has been a long time coming. This football team has played soft for 3 seasons. Time and time again at the point of attack this team gets blown up and no where are adjustments. This football team is in a sad state of affairs.

I blame this team entirely on bad coaching on the offense, the pass defense and the special teams. How does a punt returner field two punts in the same game inside his own five yard line? How does the opposing team have receivers who are not even covered open in our end zone. How can a fan call accurately over 80% of the offensive plays before they are run.
This team has been consistently headed downhill on defense since Martinez was named. This team has been headed consistently downhill on offense since Richt turned the reins over to BoBo. Etc. In the business world if a CEO hires and protects VP’s who can’t get the job done, he gets fired. Richt is a good man but a poor CEO.

Richt has had 9 seasons at UGA; including a 4 year head start on Urban Meyer vis-a-vis recruiting, establishing a presence, building a program, etc. What has happened in that 9 years is that almost every other team in the SEC-E has upgraded its coaching staff… and Georgia has made little effort towards adapting or improving. Two national championships at UF during Richt’s tenure should be a wake-up call. The bar has been raised way above the capabilities of this staff. Annual top-10 recruiting classes say the talent is here… therefore the problem must be coaching. A nice man, sure, but Richt is no coach… unless he comprehends and deals with the failings of his program.

I usually don’t write on these boards. Too many reactionary fans and Tech nerds talking about their “superiority”. But this team is a travesty. Looking at our past recruiting classes, we are underachievers. We do have a ton of talent. But I feel that UGA’s inability to keep great players until their Senior year, combined with lackadaisical and just plain poor coaching of said talent (sorry Mark Richt, I love you, but it’s true) will forever keep our program as mediocre. Championships are what fans and players and coaches remember. 10-3 reasons with a mid-level bowl win is not good enough at Georgia. Sorry, but it’s true.
With what’s happening on the field right now, I see next season and as a rebuilding season. It’s painfully obvious that we haven’t recruited well on either line. It’s obvious that we have a stable of fast players that don’t bring physicality to SEC play on defense. It’s obvious that our coaches do not coach our style of recruits to the type of game we should be playing. We are not a “between the tackles” offense. We are not a physical “tampa 2″ defense. Yet we continue to pretend that we have the players to make those schemes happen.
Aggressiveness is gone. Our o-coord has no balls for playcalling. Our d-coord can’t understand what another offense is doing, or how to adjust. Our spec teams rely on walk ons and freshman. Why is B-boykin not on offense? There’s just too much to critique. Too much to worry about. Change is needed at a few key coaching positions. Period.
Next away game, break out the red pants. Have the players play with UGA on the sidelines. Something! But it’s time that we get excited about Georgia football again. Not cautiously optimistic about our chances of possibly beating Team X. But genuinely excited about how our team plays and how they carry themselves.

Maybe they get into a fight like the Assitant hc and head coach in waiting did hear in Tally. Our defense creates no offense for our defense and great teams have their defense make plays. Does our special team know where to catch a punt. It is the little things that shows were are not being coached well. Running gasers is not cutting it.

Bring on the Blind Homers! It will be hilarious to hear them defend this guy. I am a UGA grad, longtime fan, and two season critic of the current CMR coaching staff.
Thanks for building my case today, Mark. And no thanks, I don’t want a Ford truck or carpets from Dalton.

earlier this week i blogged, rare that i do, and i wrote to not lose hope. that we may pull things together and have a turnaround like we did in 2007 after 2 early losses. however, i have never been on martinez’s bandwagon. i thought that after the 2007 season, when he seemed to do more pressure, closer man coverage than laying off receivers, stop the 3 man rush w/zone coverage leaving big gaps to throw to, that martinez turned a corner in 07 and stop playing the bend/don’t break conservative approach. last yr and this yr has been mostly a return to his 05 and 06 defensive scheme.
bill, i agree w/you that how many times can an offense run the same thing, over and over, and defense not adjust. i think only about 2 defensive series did we try a lil more pressure and play more up on the receivers.
martinez has got to go, not demoted, but has got to go.
my dad, while we watched this game, said it’s a blessing in disguise that this happened. finally, martinez may be gone, or soon gone. let’s take our medicine now and be better either later this yr if M’s gone or next yr if he’s gone. we’ve won too many close games in spite of his defensive approach that should not have been that close. a few loses come to mind that were close because we could not get away from 3 man rush/give up 3 rd and >5 yrds to go and easy first downs to keep their offense on the field.
i’m still a true bulldog fan!!! proud to be a dawg!!! will not give up on the players, but coaching and/or scheme has got to change. we still can win more games, shoot, even win out possibly, with better coaching. fabris, too, possibly bought some employment time for finally going for a punt block.
i’ll still wear my bulldog gear. proud to be a dawg and proud of our tradition. will take this loss humbly, hope dawgs turn their attn to vandy and not linger on the losses, learn from them, but not let it ruin the year.
thanks for letting me vent, y’all. Go Dawgs!!

This is going to really dampen our National Championship aspirations for this year… with one loss we were still in the hunt, two maybe, three is quite unlikely….we remain the strong favorite for next year though with 5-star Ogletree coming. Keep the Faith

If CMR does not fire Willie, then his a$$ needs to be fired. I’ve always been behind CMR, but maybe he’s in over his head. A team with less talent, a brand new coaching staff and the worst qb in the country comes in and does that to us. That is unacceptable! Can you imagine what florida is going to do to us. Vandy will probably beat us first though. What’s bad is you wait all year for this. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!

I agree that CMR is a good man and a good coach who has surrounded himself with substandard assistants but here’s the thing – loyalty is above all else to this man, which I admire – to an extent. If he’s given the ultimatum that Willie and Bobo need to go, he’s not going to do it. He’ll leave or be fired.

This one hurts. Dawgs were out played, out coached and did not show any emotion, they just went though the motions. I’ve been a UGA fan for a long time and I am very disappointed. The thing that makes this hurt more than anything is that I live in Tennessee and will have to listen to all the gloating etc.
There’s something really missing in this program. Right now, I don’t even think these guys can beat Vandy!

I am glad we are spending the weekend in Atlanta. I would be embarrassed to to go to church tomorrow morning in TN and hear all the laughter. TN fans were down on their QB, but we made him look good today.
Neigher the GA defense nor the offense came prepared to play football. As a result, TN controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage. I lost confidence today in GA defense and am close to losing confidence in the GA offense. Let’s just get by this season with perhaps a six and five record and look to the future.
