Looks like it’s going to be a looooong season

Brandon Boykin's return for a touchdown was one of the few bright spots for Georgia. (Associated Press)

Play-action.

Bootleg.

I just thought I’d throw out a couple of basic offensive football terms that Willie Martinez apparently isn’t familiar with.

As a result, Georgia made Jonathan Crompton look like an all-conference quarterback Saturday as Tennessee repeatedly ran the same basic plays over and over again to great success in a 45-19 butt-kicking.

Not that the loss can be pinned entirely on Georgia’s defense. Because the Dogs’ offense put on one of the most toothless, inept performances since … last week’s first half. No running game to speak of. And this week precious little passing game. You remember all the talk about how Georgia’s offensive line was terrible at run-blocking but good at pass protection? Today they weren’t even good at that, as Joe Cox repeatedly had to throw the ball away or had it batted down. Volunteer defenders spent more time in Georgia’s backfield than any of the three tailbacks the Dogs used in vain. The Dogs basically took the third quarter off.

Backup quarterback Logan Gray did finally get to play quarterback … and showed us little. He did complete his first pass as a Bulldog, to Marlon Brown (who finally got to make some catches), but generally threw poorly.

The only Bulldogs unit that had any positives in this game was, incredibly, the special teams, which accounted for most of Georgia’s points thanks to a 102-yard kickoff return by Brandon Boykin, a blocked punt for a safety by Zach Renner and a long field goal by Blair Walsh in addition to the pick-6 by Bacarri Rambo. Even then, the Dogs still had a terrible kickoff return that saw the Vols begin a drive in Dogs territory.

What else? Missed tackles galore. Tennessee receivers continually wide open. Poor play calling by Mike Bobo. And, again, Martinez appeared to be clueless.

And the dean of SEC coaches was outcoached by Lane Kiffin, who now has the right to say whatever he wants to when it comes to the Dogs.

Kirby Smart, please come home!

dawgster,

I doubt recruits are reading this blog as you say. Even if they are who cares? Did you watch the game today? Why would a top recruit want to come to UGA? The top programs (USC, Texas, Florida etc…) NEVER get blown out the wasy UGA did today. Truthfully, UGA is good for 1-2 blow-out losses every season. If you want top recruits then you have to earn them.

WELL WELL WELL the dawgs have doen it again. Ive been a dawg since 1970 and its been a long hard road. there are ups and downs all sround, don’t get me wrong im not a sympathizer, im a pissed off ga dawg girl. damn it im tired of not being able to say , oh yeah we will win, I’ve not been able to say that since i don’t know when. I am in need of a dawgs team that can click both offensively and defensivly and kick some ass. come on why are we the dregs of college football why are we not ranked? its because we do not have LEADERSHIP!!!!!!!!!!!! we have not had good leadership on offense and defense since Greene and Pollack. what happened to that kind of recruiting? What happens to the guys that are supposed to be Blue Chips when they get in the GA program. Its time for those questions to be answered, come on GA fans its time to rally together, the dawgs sure arent gonna do that, so lets do that and get some results. LIFE TIME DAWG FAN AND ALWAYS WILL BE!!!!!!! I LOVE MY DAWGS but i can and feel like i have the right as a season ticket holder to criticize BAD COACHING AND PLAYING.

What happened to the fake reverses, the receiver traps for Smith and Boykin on offense? What happened to trying something different with Logan Gray? I am OK with running a pro-set offense. But couldn’t we have just a bit of unpredictability? Why can’t we execute screens? Is it possible that we practice on 20 hours and the rest of the country goes over, as evidenced by the Michigan player’s comments? Is there any excuse for us to look this woefully unprepared?

Why is all of this on BoBo and Martinez. I put Rodney Garner on the line too. I am sorry, but the quality of player is not there and by the way he coaches on the defensive side of the ball. That D Line looked great today.,,,yeah and by the way he punkd Georgia by flirting with UT last off season

All those 5 Star players at UGAY just lost any chance of being drafted or playing in the nfl. They are now five star rejects, players who are less in college than they were in high school. Look at your two pretty boys from recent past, both out of the nfl, one too stupid to play, and one with something busted in he head region. At least quincy could blame drugs…

You UGA guys are idiots. Richt has been there for 9 seasons and when things are going good, you speak of him as if he is a saint. I’d be ashamed of my fans if I were a UGA fan. Ya’ll have always been a bunch of fair weather fans, but this even surprises me. And where in the world do you get off calling the Tenn fans “toothless rednecks”? Don’t you realize that the image of the UGA fan is a mullet wearing, NASCAR watching, redneck? Geeeez….you guys are something!

Week after week our opponent’s receivers seem to be open with no one in the same zip code defending. The offensive coordinator doesn’t seem to realize Stafford is in the NFL! How about designing the offense around the talent you have instead of trying to make Cox in to something he is not. Can we not run the football? We have some talented ball carriers that get too few touches. Can we coach up the players on when it’s appropriate to fair catch and when it’s best to let it go? What the heck is going on? Obama getting the Nobel prize makes more sense than our game planning!

I’ve been trying to defend the coaching staff, but I can’t do it anymore. The SEC is not the place for “on the job” training. (Bobo, 1st time coordinator, McClendon 1st time coach). We’ve got a coach with no experience coaching a group of inexperienced players with McClendon. My vote would be to get rid of every coach with the exception of Ball, Searls and Garner. Everyone else gone and start over before its too late. We still have enough talent to recover next season, but we have to get the right coaches in place. Hopefully CMR will realize that it will be him getting new coaches or the powers that be replacing the entire staff including him. I know a good “captain” goes down with his ship, but hopefully he’ll make the right moves and keep the ship form sinking

Time to start thinking about next year. We’re two games behind Florida already in the east, and Tennessee has the tie-breaker advantage now. So I say get those heralded recruits on the field this year instead of “rebuilding” next year. We can’t handle 2006 and 2009 again in 2010. That would be three out of five down years, and in my book, one down year too many in Athens. Today was a wake-up call!

Martinez is one of the finest DC in the country. To fire him would be a terrible mistake. Bobo knows Richts offense and is imaginative in his play calling. They both should be retained by Richt. Fabris is doing a fine job with the DE and today was a great example at what an outstanding Special teams coach he is. Go Dogs!

There are basically two different groups of georgia fans right now. Ones that think there need to be coaching changes and ones that hate on georgia fans for demanding the most out of the coaches and teams. I demand greatness from great talent. Its time for a change so Piss on all you georgia fans that say we are not true fans . I went 14 hours to stillwater to watch this team play. I was born a DAWG and will die a DAWG. For all the fans that believe we deserve better than this i am with you all. also close that end zone in in the west end zone we need sanFord Stadium to become a intimidating place to play.

This is not meant as a trolling response. We already got rid of our Phillip Fulmer. Maybe it’s time you guys do too. This game was a lot closer than the score. TN did not drive on us and we were our own worst enemy. Our defense played great, but all the bad calls killed us. Cox is a much better QB than Crompton, but I think he was sick with the flu today. We will win the rest of our games and will play Alabama in the SEC Championship game.

With all the criticism of the coaching staff, lets not fail to notice one thing. At the beginning of the year John Fabris was named by ESPN as the best position coach in the SEC. I think we saw why today. It appears he was given time to coach this week and Special Teams is the one area of we saw improvement. They were not perfect but at least improving. He seems to care about winning and Georgia performing. On the side lines he looked engaged and obviously made adjustments this week. Go John Go Dogs
