Bulldog Bites: Big test for UGA’s defensive front

Georgia's defense will face a stiff test. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Georgia’s improving defensive line got six sacks against LSU but still gave up 95 yards to back Charles Scott. Against Tennessee and league-leading back Montario Hardesty, they’ll face their biggest test of the season, despite recent injury problems for the Vol’s offensive line. Coach Rodney Garner tells the Athens Banner-Herald that UT has “the best offensive line” that the Dogs have played, “hands down.” Garner adds, “I don’t care if they’re 2-3. You look at the film and the film don’t lie.”

Mark Richt says Georgia’s defensive line will “get tested this game more than any game we’ve played. Especially against the run. That’s what those big boys are here for to stop the run. It will be a great matchup.”

DOGS NEED TO NIP IT IN THE BUD

In addition to all the official statistical categories in which the Bulldogs rank last or near it in the SEC, MrSEC.com has come up with what it calls the Fife Factor, named after the bumbling Mayberry deputy, which quantifies just how often a team shoots itself in the foot. Figuring into the Fife Factor are penalties (on offense and defense), giveaways and sacks allowed — all counted as “miscues.” The goal is to see how many plays — on average — the SEC’s teams can run without a miscue. Finishing last so far: Georgia, which has had a miscue every 9.71 plays. Tennessee has the second-best Fife Factor, with a miscue every 18.41 plays.

VOLS OUT TO FIX KICK COVERAGE

Like Georgia, Tennessee has had problems with kickoff coverage, giving up big returns to Florida, Ohio and Auburn. It remains to be seen what the Dogs are going to do about it, but Tennessee apparently has made changes in its personnel to try and fix the problem. Coach Lane Kiffin told the Chattanooga Times-Free Press he has shuffled the coverage unit this week to put more speed on the field.  “You’ll see a bunch of new people out there,” Kiffin said. He added that the team practiced “even more on special teams this week, and we already did a ton. Yesterday was almost like a live drill. There were bodies flying everywhere. I think they’re getting the message. I’d be shocked if we don’t play well on kickoff coverage this week.”

INJURY IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Concussions are a dangerously underrated injury in football — at least, they were until ESPN launched its nearly round-the-clock coverage of Tim Tebow’s pounding head. Anyway, both of Georgia’s Kings, Caleb and Tavares, suffered concussions in last week’s game, and The Red & Black provides an in-depth look at the injury and how the Georgia program determines a player with a concussion is ready to take the field again. It involves a series of tests and, says Ron Courson, UGA’s director of sports medicine, “If anywhere along in there they have some symptoms, we stop them and back them back down. They may go through that [progression] in one day, they may go through that in four or five days. It’s just a matter of progression. We monitor from that standpoint.”

The Dawg defense is just awful. You can’t depend on them to win the game for you. Against SEC Teams UGA will have to run the score up so they don’t have to rely on the poor defense. SEC1- you are not in contention in the East, you weren’t when the season began and you are still not. The Dawgs just are not good enough to play with the Gators, end O’ story. If you score more than 10 points this year it will be a moral victory for Cox and Co.

I have read these post. I dont care what you say. Unless you’ve played football before and know how to throw an interception as well as make the best receiver in the SEC have to come back to catch passes or can out right over throw him- you have no room to talk or critize me. I am joe cox and coach is loyal to me. get use to it. Logan gets to play on special teams- he needs to wait his turn to play QB. I am Joe Cox…i hate to lose….i didnt lose in HS…..

We have read these comments…and we dont care. We will show you this week when we play UT. We will have a new dance- wait till you see it. we are so tired from dancing, it is hard for us to get down the field to cover the kick off. Lanes? what lanes? who’s talking about lanes? what does that have to do with kick offs? I think we shall just dance our way down the field

Bill King now starring as Ernest T. Bass and Saint Simons will be his pet rock. I have said this many times, “Hire Bill KIng as Head Coach” and he will add Saint Simons as his assistant and the world will be fine. Otis Campbell is not the UGA student body but most of the UGA FAN BASE since he is drunk most of the time. Hey Bill, I hear that Rex Robinson is catching heat due to his remarks about the kicker. Does this include you too? Hey Bishop, when you are done with Carl, he needs to find the gopher.

I too have read the comments- I have laid down the challenge to my special teams. It’s time to man-up and finish the dance…err..I mean drill. We are going to still use directional kicks as I belive in them but I am going to add an additional wrinkle for the receiving team- our players will do a two step waltz down the field. My hope is the opposing players will be laughing so hard they will drop to the ground and thus preventing a long return. That should allow them to start around the 35 or so

You should all be so proud of yourselves. The sky is not falling. UF lost 4 games a few years back. We have more wins then any SEC team in the last 8 years. It will be ok. Get a job, focus on your own success and stop living vicariously through a football team. Try to make a living and improve the economy, your community and your family. In other words…. GET A LIFE! Last time you will ever see me here again. I will try to find somewhere else where intelligent people talk football.

uuughh… I DARE YOU TO APPLY FOR THE SPECIAL TEAMS COACHING JOB! Be prepared to get thrown out of the building on your head and get endlessly laughed at.

I guess the 11 guys in different colored jerseys; will just give up upon hearing your kickoff coverage plan? No don’t stay in your lanes and take good angles, don’t worry about over running the return man, just go hit somebody. So if the 10 coverage team members go “hit somebody”, that leaves the kicker to tackle the return man, good strategy! Lol, ya know it’s better to let people think you’re an idiot then to open your mouth and prove them right.

Well I feel alot better now after visiting a Vol blog from the Knoxville paper. They are crying about their 5th year QB and how the Offense is a 3 and out unit that keeps their D on the field all day. They are bitching about how their Kick Off coverage is horrible. They even had a young speedster by the name of Richardson who had a run of 41 yards on U.T.s first play of the game against Auburn out of the single wing offense. Kinda like Smith’s run for a TD a couple of weeks back. The Vol fans want to see more of him and the single wing just like we want to see Smith get the ball some more. At least their fanbase is as depressed and angry as some here on this blog. Go Dawgs, lets take a win in the rain tomorrow.

Its funny how Kiffin will call his special teams out and make changes in personel when they aren’t playing the way they should, but why not Richt… our special teams, especially kickoff coverage hasn’t played well all year… why won’t he make a change and let them know if they don’t get better somebody will take their job. TAKE LOGAN GREY OFF KICKOFFS IF YOU DON’T WANT HIM HURT!!! Surely there is somebody faster and a better hitter/tackler than he is on the team. Now on punt return, doesn’t it just make it obvious that he is going to call fair catch when he is back there. that just gives teams a reason to go all out and block the punt if they know he’s not a threat to run it. these coaching decisions just don’t make sense to me. somebody explain it to me…

Can you provide an update on Dontavius Jackson ( you know the kid out of Heard County) seems like Ealey has just blown past the kid on the depth chart.. I’m aware he had knee issue but I thought it had heeled and he was competing for playing time. any info you can give would be great. I like Ealey, but if you saw Jackson play in 2007 he seemed destined to be great a UGA..

Reebok-You are a class act day in and day out on these blogs. Best of luck against Bowden’s goons in Tallahassee. Don’t think you’ll need any of the such.

Dogs, get your $h## together, play a full fundamental game and limit the penalties. It’s not that hard.
WE ARE THE BETTER TEAM. NO DOUBT. RALLY THE TROUPS AND FINISH THE GD DRILL.

Mr. Richt, this game will say a lot about where we stand as a program.

Dawgtime

Okay, I was trying to remain positive but it is obvious that UGA lacks coaching. We are making stars out of average QB’s. Offense: Joe Cox is not a starting QB. I’m sure he is a great kid but he cannot handle big time situations. He has leadership but lacks size, speed, and talent. He should find the bench and start Logan Gray. He has a better arm and much better speed. What do we have to keep losing with a terrible QB? Why keep running out of an I formation when you cannot run? Play action only works if you can run. Mike Bobo needs to expand the offense. Stop running the same basic packages. Monte Kiffin made Bobo look stupid. Open your mind and catch up to modern times. Herschel nor Knowshon is at running back. Richard Samuel is a LB or FB. It is just a fact. Great kid but lacks the wiggle. The line is average at best. Vince Vance is 6′8 330 but lacks any technique. Find the bench big boy. He gets dominated on a consistent basis. The receivers are good and will get better with better coaching. The defensive problems are obvious. We can’t stop anybody. No pass rush. Geno Atkins and Jeff Owens are not the dominate players that they are made out to be. Kade Weston is the best SR DL at UGA. Demarcus Dobbs needs to be moved to DT. He never gets any pressure on the QB. Firing Willie Martinez hads been an obvious decision for a couple of years. Prince Miller has been a major bust. Our senior class is terrible. Michael Moore and Kade Weston have been the only productive seniors which points to a bright future. The DE’s coach needs to be fired. They are poorly prepared. So the entire UT team can go on the field and dance during a game and no call is made? What’s the deal? A fair catch that hits the ground? That was a horrible call. So in the event of a dead ball, you can commit a personal foul (Marlon Brown)? Hmmm. This is unbelievable. I am still amazed at how UT fans treat Marlon Brown. Orson Charles was punched in the head with an offical watching with no call. You criticize a young man’s grandmother because he selects a different school. That is a total lack of class. He is not a slave that belongs to any state. Eric Berry is from GA but he never belonged to UGA. Have some class? This is a young teenager. Mark Richt’s seat is becoming hot. I love the man but he is not making the best decisions. We need to start playing the younger players. They are more productive and have better talent.
