Bulldog Bites: Big test for UGA’s defensive front

Georgia's defense will face a stiff test. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Georgia’s improving defensive line got six sacks against LSU but still gave up 95 yards to back Charles Scott. Against Tennessee and league-leading back Montario Hardesty, they’ll face their biggest test of the season, despite recent injury problems for the Vol’s offensive line. Coach Rodney Garner tells the Athens Banner-Herald that UT has “the best offensive line” that the Dogs have played, “hands down.” Garner adds, “I don’t care if they’re 2-3. You look at the film and the film don’t lie.”

Mark Richt says Georgia’s defensive line will “get tested this game more than any game we’ve played. Especially against the run. That’s what those big boys are here for to stop the run. It will be a great matchup.”

DOGS NEED TO NIP IT IN THE BUD

In addition to all the official statistical categories in which the Bulldogs rank last or near it in the SEC, MrSEC.com has come up with what it calls the Fife Factor, named after the bumbling Mayberry deputy, which quantifies just how often a team shoots itself in the foot. Figuring into the Fife Factor are penalties (on offense and defense), giveaways and sacks allowed — all counted as “miscues.” The goal is to see how many plays — on average — the SEC’s teams can run without a miscue. Finishing last so far: Georgia, which has had a miscue every 9.71 plays. Tennessee has the second-best Fife Factor, with a miscue every 18.41 plays.

VOLS OUT TO FIX KICK COVERAGE

Like Georgia, Tennessee has had problems with kickoff coverage, giving up big returns to Florida, Ohio and Auburn. It remains to be seen what the Dogs are going to do about it, but Tennessee apparently has made changes in its personnel to try and fix the problem. Coach Lane Kiffin told the Chattanooga Times-Free Press he has shuffled the coverage unit this week to put more speed on the field.  “You’ll see a bunch of new people out there,” Kiffin said. He added that the team practiced “even more on special teams this week, and we already did a ton. Yesterday was almost like a live drill. There were bodies flying everywhere. I think they’re getting the message. I’d be shocked if we don’t play well on kickoff coverage this week.”

INJURY IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Concussions are a dangerously underrated injury in football — at least, they were until ESPN launched its nearly round-the-clock coverage of Tim Tebow’s pounding head. Anyway, both of Georgia’s Kings, Caleb and Tavares, suffered concussions in last week’s game, and The Red & Black provides an in-depth look at the injury and how the Georgia program determines a player with a concussion is ready to take the field again. It involves a series of tests and, says Ron Courson, UGA’s director of sports medicine, “If anywhere along in there they have some symptoms, we stop them and back them back down. They may go through that [progression] in one day, they may go through that in four or five days. It’s just a matter of progression. We monitor from that standpoint.”

Still waiting for Animaldr’s keen insight on how UGA needs to approach this weekend… I think that UGA should hire him as a consultant.

The new rule prohibits helmet to head contact, two concussions, hmmmm. Lord help you if you look at the stands, or point to the sky. I think the SEC refs were OCD’n on the celebration penalty, and hopefully the national spotlight on inchoherent penalties have calmed that down for everyone.

The thing that UGA is doing this weekend is playing run defense, and Monte will take away our run game. My guess is that we will be open 10 yards down the field. The question is whether we can hit the reicevers. They will be open.

If defense plays like it did last week, we win. Kickoff coverage CANNOT spot them at the ball midfield every time. Even Crompton can make us pay for that.

Hey Bill,

I quoted the same Kiffin interview to the Chattanooga Times-Free Press in your other post and poster Mark Richt responded with something worth repeating here:

“Dawg Nation
Man where have you been? We don’t have time for additional special teams practice. Besides, it’s not like special teams has made a big difference this year anyway. We are spending our time with tackling drills and practicing our running game and they have been exponentially better this year; don’t you think? Oh and I added 15 minutes to each practice to work on our dances for timeouts and stuff. It just gets the team fired up ya know? We just aren’t that concerned with special teams play. If TN wants to practice that more then more power to them but that’s not how we do things at UGA.”

Kind of sums up the frustrations echoed by many.

Anyone say Bud or was it Bye? Buds are always good at Arthur Parr’s or Allen’s and (I say bye bye to CWM and the rest of them. This by is for you Martinez and booboo.

Dogs had better hang tough vs Hardesty and their FROSH BACK . I see BOTH doing some major, major damage to UGA’s d, then that very, very average Compton will light up the GA secondary. It could be ugly.
We are a team in dis array and it could become very ugly, down the final stretch.

Change must be forthcoming or 2010 will be a repeat.

UGA has a bunch of cry baby fans! Don’t tell me you are passionate either. You think you know football, because you MAY have played Pop Warner or you watch it on TV. Changes will be made if they need to be made. It’s not going to happen in the middle of the year. Let it all play out and if the Dawgs don’t get it done on the field, then at the end of the year, sound off. Remember, we are reading what the media writes. I would bet that most things said by the coaches and players aren’t a full quote or taken out of context. The media would never exaggerate or not tell the entire truth of what was said. Look at the coverage of the political races. That is how they get you all going. Then you all pop off like you have been coaching for 50 years and know better how to run a football team. Send your resume’ to Damon Evans! I bet you don’t get a call. Let the season play out, then you can gripe, if need be! Go Dawgs!! I hate UT!!!

That’s funny Lane! Bobo said yesterday that the reason we don’t play our #2 QB more is because our #3 QB is injured (I hear “If it weren’t for my horse I wouldn’t have made it through that year of college.”). Then we run that #2 out there on Punt Return and Punt Coverage duty. Seems just about as logical is dancing on the field when you are tied with a team you should beat by 28 or keeping the same Crack Special Teams Coordinator on staff when he is obviously hurting your chances of winning!

Charlotte Dawg,
From your 11:12 Post

UGA has a bunch of cry baby fans!(No just sad with the unwillingness of the coaches to make a change.)
Don’t tell me you are passionate either.(I am sorry if you don’t like it.)
You think you know football, because you MAY have played Pop Warner or you watch it on TV.
(I have played to the college level and do know something about football)
Changes will be made if they need to be made.(If???)
It’s not going to happen in the middle of the year.(How about trying adjustments….just once?)
Let it all play out and if the Dawgs don’t get it done on the field, then at the end of the year, sound off.(I remind you, you are here sounding off as well.)
Remember, we are reading what the media writes. I would bet that most things said by the coaches and players aren’t a full quote or taken out of context.
(OK and when has any of the coaches or players identified that their quotes were taken out of context?)
The media would never exaggerate or not tell the entire truth of what was said.( That’s were you research and make your own determinations) Look at the coverage of the political races.(Ahhhhhh, knew you were going there)
That is how they get you all going.(Their job I assume)
Then you all pop off like you have been coaching for 50 years and know better how to run a football team.(I have coached and did not make it a career as I served my county for 30 years. Besides the job was full when I was looking. Coach Dooley wouldn’t resign.)
Send your resume’ to Damon Evans! I bet you don’t get a call.( Your right he is to busy setting up the Dome game for 2011)
Let the season play out, then you can gripe, if need be!(Then Saturdays would not be as much fun)
Go Dawgs!! I hate UT!!!(Finally something we agree on.)

Done with jest Charlotte.;)

D&D and Charlotte. If they would pay me to coach the Special Teams, I bet I could do nothing and get better results than Fabris.

First Team Meeting:
“Is there anybody out there that just wants to knock th $hit out of someone on the other team?”

“Come on…there has to be more than 3 of you.”

“Finally. Ok you 10 are on Kickoff Coverage…Walsh is going to kick it as far as he can. You idiots knock the crap aout of everyone on the field not wearing what you are wearing. First guy that tackles the man with the ball gets a nice pat on the butt by me. I don’t care how you make it happen just make the damned tackle. Walsh if you don’t kick it in the endzone, I’m putting Bogotay in. If neither of you can do it, nobody gets a pat on the butt by me. Now go get’em.”

…Plus I’d work for a third of what they pay that idiot Fabris.

We say the same thing every week. “If we won’t commit penalties we’ll win” “if the kick coverage won’t give up 30 yards a pop we’ll win” “If the defense will grow a pair…” and every Saturday we see the same thing. We either escape with an ugly win or hang our heads after an ugly loss and think of the missed opportunities. I’m tired of it. I don’t think it’s too much to ask for this team to perform the way it is expected to.

IF THE PLAYERS IN THE GAME AREN’T GETTING IT DONE THEN PUT SOMEONE ELSE IN!!! GET THE YOUNGER GUYS SOME PLAYING TIME!!!! IF YOU’RE NOT GETTING IT DONE THEN FIND SOMEONE WHO WILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are right in this assesment. The problem is we never build a lead big enough so we can get younger guys in to get some experience. See AZ State last year; we could have been up 4 touchdowns in that game had we wanted to by the 3rd quarter and given Cox an entire quarters worth of work but we just laid down on the ball hence the 1st and goal from the 5 yd line and we end up kicking as field goal. This is all with the #1 and #12 pick in the NFL draft in the backfield. The conservative approach we have kills opportunities to get younger QBs playing time.

While we are still in contention for the East, I don’t see Richt making any significant changes. However, if we continue to struggle, we should give serious consideration to playing the young guys. My fear is that Richt will be “loyal” to Cox and then “loyal” to Gray and so on…

SEC1, you fear this from a man who kept Matthew Stafford on the bench for half a season in favor of Joe T and Joe Cox (1 game)? Loyalty is what this man is about. Why else is Brian Evans playing any position on defense? Why does Cox stay in the game overthrowing everyone for a whole half with ONE first down? On that note why is Bobo still calling plays? Why is Fabris getting a coaching salary? Or Martinez? BLIND LOYALTY!

Wow, everyone is in rare form today!!!! Good job folks.

Murfdawg, yes I saw it and laughed. Typical was what I said and just let it go!!!! Got tired of beating that one up as it does nothing for UGA. Until they decide UGA has had enough of the crap from UF endzone celebration there is nothing we can do about it.

So from some one who is not happy with the things are going in Athens I will try to say something good for all of you blind loyalist out there who shame all of us for taking UGA’s name in vain.

We have a great recruiting class lined up for next year. Ealey is just not quite ready yet we will be ok with Samuel. Cox only throws 1 or 2 int’s a game with about 4 or 5 more possible but he is the leader of the team and without him I doubt we would score any points. The defense kept LSU under 400 yards last week and did you see that first half masterpiece. Beautiful considering they took the ball nearly 50 yards everytime they touched it. Don’t worry about next year we will have coached up the players on the kickoff team and expand the look for a kicker for kickoffs farther than just Europe. We will put up giant fans on both end of Sanford stadium as part of the expansion so the wind will not be a problem on kickoffs any longer. Gray’s arm will be rested next year and ready to go provided some hotshot on the opposing team doesn’t take his head off with him fielding punts. Oh I forgot that is our team that does those things. He should be ok. Our coaches know that penalties are a problem. We promise to do more than make the players knit UGA a new outfit next year as punishment. We will send Fabris up to VA Tech in the offseason so he can tell Beamer what he has been doing wrong and hopefully coach fab can come back with some new ideas. We love Joe Cox so much we will hire him as a graduate assistant and co-offensive coordinator to give Bobo some new ideas. And finally, we will have BVG come back to Athens for a visit. Unfortunately, all of our D recruits will bail for fear of tackling drills so Martinez will be back again next year.

Here it is..plain and simple……
Our defense will make Crompton look like he is a heisman candidate tomorrow.
Our offense will have 3 turnovers (1 will go back for a TD). Samuel will fumble. We gain 79yds and make UT defense look great
Our special teams will bring laughter from the croud as they live up to their nickname: Keystone Cops
The team will dance for the crowd at the beginning of the 4th quarter.
Special teams will find time to dance some when lining up to kick off
AJ will look spectacular! and some will wonder- how did he end up at UGA when he could have played for a great team and possibly won a championship.
Kef Senior will eat BoBo’s playcalling alive. People will be laughing for weeks to come.
After the game, Mark “will be sad” we got embarrassed. He will blame the kicker. Cox will be mad. ….same story…different week…..wash…rinse…repeat……
