A.J. Green's remarkable touchdown catch. (Associated Press)
I was struck by a quote from Joe Cox about Georgia receiver A.J. Green that I saw in the Athens Banner-Herald.
Talking about Green’s gravity-defying 16-yard touchdown catch against LSU, where he went up high and took the ball away from Tigers defender Chris Hawkins, Cox said it was “a great catch,” then he noted, “It would have [ranked] a lot higher if we would have won the game. It would have been considered probably one of the best plays ever in Sanford Stadium.”
He’s right. In fact, even though Georgia lost the game (in part because of a bad celebration call made on Green after the catch), I think it’s still one of the best plays I’ve ever seen in Sanford Stadium.
And yet it was just business as usual for the remarkable Green, who leads the SEC in total receiving yards (527), receiving yards per game (105.4) and receiving per game (6.0). Green has had at least one TD in each of his past three games and is tied for the league lead with five touchdown receptions this season. And he also has a blocked field goal to his credit.
We’re privileged to be watching a very special player perform, and we should appreciate him fully while we’ve got him. After all, it’s likely we’ll only see Green in Georgia red one more season after this one.
I’m just afraid that Green won’t get proper consideration in years to come as one of the all-time UGA greats simply because he’s the lone standout on an otherwise average team. It’s happened before. Eric Zeier was a great quarterback, probably one of the best college QBs I’ve ever seen. But because he played on mediocre Ray Goff teams, he doesn’t draw near the love from the Bulldog Nation that David Greene gets.
It would be a shame if that happened to A.J.

I agree on both. Eric Z had the best long ball I’ve ever watched in Athens.
I do think it settles who is better AJ or Julio. Bama’s argument last year was Julio was Bama’s only WR. AJ is UGA’s biggest weapon now. Wooten and Charles are getting scraps but UGA has no running game and if you shutodwn AJ chances are you can win.

Bill King, you sound like so many of the whining dogs.
To quote Mark Bradley:
Folks, the game wasn’t decided by a penalty with 1:09 to go. Nothing prevented Georgia from tackling Trindon Holliday, did it? Nothing stopped Georgia from tackling Charles Scott and blocking a field goal, did it?
I’m sorry I’m not giving you all what you want on this, but … actually, I’m not sorry. No matter what happens, you have to play the next play. And Georgia allowed a long kickoff return and a long touchdown run and a 2-point conversion and then failed to get a decent return after LSU’s matching penalty.

Stop the press! UGA has a special one in AJ Green. That sure is breaking news. He is the best receiver in the country with Julio Jones a close 2nd. This coming from a Tech fan, but you’re kidding yourselves if you think he’s better than Calvin Johnson. Calvin was/is taller, faster, stronger, etc. AJ does remind me of Calvin in the way he goes up to make a play on the ball. But he doesn’t have the measurables of a Calvin Johnson. I’m sure his stats may be better but you’ve got to handicap those with Reggie Ball throwing to Calvin in Chan Gailey’s conservative “play not to lose” system.

You’re dead on about Zeier. He didn’t have the prototypical size to be a drop back QB in the NFL but he was one of the best pure passers in college history. He doesn’t get his due. AJ Green on the other hand may not suffer from the same fate as fans don’t necessarily equate player greatness and wins to the same degree for positions other than quarterback.

zxz – He could realistically end up being better than Calvin Johnson which is pretty amazing given that I once considered CJ to be a once in a decade type wideout. As good as Calvin was, he would still sometimes get taken out of games by good defenders or schemes. For example, Paul Oliver certainly had his number. It may happen at some point, but I don’t see AJ ever getting completely shut down.

I agreed with Dawg Nation.
Look at Arkansas. They don’t have world beater receivers. All they did was catch it if thrown at them and I don’t understand why we’re not having more receivers set. I’m not talking about Run/Shoot offense all of the times, but we need to do more 4 receivers set to keep the drive alive. I think our receivers has enough speeds to run the Fun n Gun type of offense.
Come on Bobo…makes your opponent guess what’s next?? Not the crappy play calling you’re doing now. They all know your play calling. Mixs it up. If you’re not better than half of the team on the schedules, then you’re not coaching these guy up.

A.J. could have 1,500 yds receiving if he had Greene or maybe Zeier (I never watched Zeier play).
Imagine what kind of number’s Calvin would of put up if he had Joe Hamilton or George Godsey throwing to him, he too could’ve had 1,500 yds & probably close to 20 TD’s.

Remember a while ago when Richt was the OC for FSU and the whole offense was wide-open with 4 or 5 WR sets and the ball going every-which-way? And remember why (purportedly) he didn’t bring that offense to UGA: we didn’t have the athletes? Well, we may be thin at WR, but I think we’re getting close to saying we’ve got the athletes to run a wide-open offense…especially with our running game in shambles right now. A good coach adapts his play-calling to the strengths of his team. Maybe if we pass the ball more, it’ll open up the run game…because the run game sure isn’t helping out the passing game…

If you want to compare measurables, it’s no contest – Calvin Johnson wins hands down. He’s big (6′5″, 240), fast (4.3 40 yard dash), can out-jump any DB (highest jump at combine), has huge hands that catches nearly everything. He’s a once a decade physical specimen. AJ Green is awesome but he’s skinny and doesn’t measure up physically. That doesn’t really matter though because he’s an elite WR. I think AJ Green is great and is only going to get better, but Calvin was a Freak.

As a follow-on, although it would be a nice feather in UGA’s cap, Green’s individual greatness, should he achieve it, is not nearly as important as the team’s success. And this sort of speaks to the celebration rule, where players call want to call attention to themselves. Hopefully, AJ was not wanting to call attention to himself and won’t want to do that in the future. We shall see.

Hard to say whether A.J. will be as good as Calvin Johnson is.
Certainly have to like his chances based on three things. Those being
hands, leaping ability , and competitiveness.
Tech has excellent talent on the collegiate level at the wideout
position. But I believe they will have problems in the future
in recruiting that same kind of talent . The reason is simply
that kids want the chance to play in the NFL . And the type of
system Tech runs is not very compatible.
Comparing A.J. with Tech recievers is not a good comparison
for the simple reason of how defenses handle them.
Tech receivers have the benefit of defenses designed to stop the
run . Because of this they are not challenged to the same degree
that an A.J. is challenged. It is hard to get better without
being properly challenged. In the NFL receivers must defeat
bump and run . The learning curve is steeper. I believe it
will have a long negative impact on recruiting that position for
Tech as recruits watch former Tech guys fail in the NFL.
But not to short CPJ as he wiil be able to sell to a few guys
on the fact that their numbers will look good.

AJ is definitely the best we have ever had. He makes place through single, double, even triple coverage! He makes our bad QB look SEC caliber…that’s what makes him so amazing!
If he had a good QB throwing to him, he would already be being mentioned in the Heisman race. Instead he drags mediocre players up to a higher level…and thank God for that!
Without AJ we are 1-4 and Joe Cox is back to his rightful place on the bench holding a clipboard.

AJ is clearly the star on this years team and arguably the best receiver ever at GA and possibly the best in the country thus far this season. If the dawgs had a RB that could make runs/plays the way AJ does this could be a whole different team and challenge anyone week in and week out. Unfortunately, thats not the case so far this season.
Get off Joe Cox’s case. His only bad game was OSU and he was sick. Blame that one on the coaches. He doesn’t shine all the time but he is steady and he’s not the sole reason for GA’s losses this season. There’s enough blame to go around and it lands on just about every player (except Green) and each coach.
