One plus: The Dogs are developing an effective pass rush. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
Normally at this point in the week I like to summarize both the good things and the concerns that Dogs fans can take out of the most recent game.
The encouraging things from the LSU game can be summed up pretty quickly: A.J. Green continued to amaze; Washaun Ealey showed he deserves a lot more playing time; Drew Butler again provided excellent punting; the Dogs appear to have found a pass rush; and if only the rest of Willie Martinez’s defense was as strong as in the red zone.
There are quite a few reasons for UGA fans to be concerned, however. And the biggest one continues to be the appalling state of the Dogs’ special teams under Jon Fabris, particularly on kickoffs.
I like the way my son put it after the LSU game: “The kickoff coverage problem is absurd. LSU stopped [Brandon] Boykin at our 33. We let [Trindon] Holliday get to our 43 and then 5 more yards for not lining up properly. The obstinacy towards fixing this problem is really getting old. We cover kickoffs like we are using 8 on 11 and those 8 have only a vague familiarity with kickoff coverage strategy. Or football.”
It’s been a problem dating at least back through last season, as David Hale illustrates in a rundown of kickoff problems. He notes 22 miscues on kickoffs following either crucial Georgia scores or to start a half in the past 18 games.
Aside from the argument over why the Dogs can’t or won’t put the kicks into the end zone consistently for a touchback, the coverage is just horrendous. Georgia continues to play walk-ons on kickoff coverage, can’t seem to get off the initial blocks to get to the return man quickly enough, frequently allows returners to make a cut and hit their blocking lane and tackles poorly. Did I miss anything? Probably.
And, of course, while our problems covering kickoffs are just the most glaring of the special teams deficiencies, there are plenty of others. As I’ve noted before, we’ve pretty much given up trying to return punts. And then there’s the chaos on the Georgia sidelines. I don’t really blame Blair Walsh for his missed field goal Saturday, because it was obvious he felt hurried after Fabris couldn’t get the proper personnel on the field in a timely manner. The play clock was down to like 12 seconds and we were still running folks on!
Worst of all, Mark Richt continues to pretend like Fabris isn’t the problem, blaming the “wind” for Georgia’s poor coverage of that last kickoff to LSU.
One thing you can say about our special teams play, though, is that it hasn’t disappointed. We knew going into the season that it was a problem area.
The disappointment has been the offensive line. Everyone thought Georgia’s OL would be one of the Dogs’ strengths. I think the mistake was in assuming that last year’s extensive game experience for the young OL would automatically mean they were good this year. Well, the best you can say is that their pass protection has generally been OK. But run blocking? Pretty much nonexistent.
Top that off with running backs unable to bounce off a defender or break a tackle and you wind up with the kind of embarassing showing Georgia’s running attack gave in the first half Saturday. At this rate, the Dogs are flirting with numbers the like of which haven’t been seen at UGA since the Johnny Griffith era!
And then there’s offensive coordinator Mike Bobo. If he had a game plan for LSU — and that appeared questionable — it was pretty much a disaster. For every brilliant call like the pass to Shaun Chapas from the 1-yard line, there were a dozen that were shockingly predictable. At times, he seems to have absolutely no feel for what’s actually happening on the field, going to trick plays when they’re least likely to succeed and continually looking for the long ball in the passing attack instead of just getting a first down.
Bottom line? Yes, there were plenty of instances Saturday of players not executing properly. But stepping back from individual plays, it’s becoming alarmingly clear that a number of elements that make up the Georgia football program, which just suffered its fourth consecutive loss to a Top 10 team, are not very well coached.
There’s not much can be done about that in midseason, unfortunately.

I agree that Bobo is sometimes as predictable as the sunrise but part of the problem also lies with Joe Cox. He doesn’t seem to be improving in his progression of reads through the receivers and way too often just wants to lock into one (usually Green downfield) and stick with it. He’s not showing the patience you would normally expect from a senior even with his lack of playing experience.

Well, here’s the deal. Bobo is doing all he can with what he has on the field. The reason that we struggle so on offense is because we don’t have a QB with an arm strong enough to spread the field. He seems to come out of the huddle with his mind made up on who he is throwing the ball to before he even attempts to read the defense. We can’t throw the 20 yard outs to spread the safeties, and LSU knew it. They stayed in a cover 2 with the safeties in the middle of the field. Cox left AJ wide open to check down to the FB on a covered flat rout? That’s terrible! My 8 year old son was sitting with my friend’s mother two sections from me and I didn’t get to talk to him until after the game, and his first question to me was why didn’t Cox throw the ball to number 7 when he was running down the field jumping up and down with his arms up in the air? I couldn’t answer that.
CMR says that the reason we redshirt QBs is because they don’t know the whole playbook. We can’t run the whole playbook now with Cox because he doesn’t have the arm nor the vision to hit the open recievers. We had people open all day that he just simply missed. All Bobo can do is call the play. He can’t throw the pass.
We used to hear after a game how they would wait and see how Stafford graded out on his reads. Why haven’t we heard anything like that about Cox?

Yes, good article but slightly deceiving. Sure UGA has lost the last four to top ten teams but the fact is LSU is still likely the most overrated team in the nation. Are they truly a top 10 team. No way. They struggle way to much to put points on the board. Nearly lost to Washington and everywhere but the scoreboard lost to Mississippi State. So get ready…we will lose several more games this year and they want be top 20 much less top 5. I would not be surprised to see us beat Florida but lose to Auburn and Kentucky.

Bill King, you are dead on. Considering Prince Miller’s normal return yardage and that his muffed punt happened when his own man interfered with him, he definitely needs to be given those chances. Especially in a game like this where field position was so important.
And the first half play calling was pathetic. I almost wondered if there’s something secretly wrong with Cox’s arm that Bobo was calling plays around — either a deep ball or a dump pass, never attempting to hit a receiver on a normal short to middle route. On one possession I even thought, here it comes, run on first down, throw long on second, screen pass on third, and punt. I was right. If they’re going to sell out on stopping the run, you have to adjust your game plan accordingly. Work the ball down the field with your possession receivers and tight ends 8 to 12 yards at a time!
And Richt, PLEASE do something about the kickoff coverage.
Hats off to the defense. Too bad it wasn’t enough.

Also, I agree with the assessment of Coach Fabris but it almost seems pointless in discussing it because apparently, nothing will ever change. I’m afraid that the Georgia program is becoming the home of wayward and homeless coaches. For every Garner or Searles we fight to keep, we have a Fabris and a Martinez that no one else wants but inexplicably have no fear of reprisal or consequence no matter how badly they underperform.

The reason that we got some sacks Saturday was that we were playing a team that is nearly as badly coached as we are. We got the sacks for the same reason that we stopped the Tigers twice on 4th and short—they are as poor up front as we are.
There is nothing this team does at an average level, much less well, with the exception of Drew Butler’s punts. I’m convinced now that the reason that the Dawgs don’t throw the 10-15 yard passes you suggest is because Cox doesn’t have the arm for them. (Those passes are harder to throw than 30-40 deep balls because they have to be on a rope to prevent from being intercepted—Cox clearly can’t do it).
We are headed for 5-7 or even 4-8 if Vandy jumps up and bites us—and being a far-better coached bunch, it’s entirely possible.
The same problems persist, week-to-week. We should have won this game—the celebration calls were outrageous, but a better-coached team with the amount of talent we have should have put away similarly-poorly coached LSU long before those occurred.
It’s time for the UGA power-that-be to start thinking post-Mark Richt.

I do not think bobo is calling the plays. the game plan has not changed since richt arrived at UGA. He has got to be calling the plays or at least dictating the type of play called. The only difference this year is we have no running game. Samuel and C. King are not SEC quality backs, which is shown by the lack of confidence in their production in bringing in the 3rd-stringer (Ealey) in the 4th qtr. of a tight SEC game. thankfully, he at least went forward and did not fall immediately when hit. Also, how many times a season do we get a first down by running on 3rd and 8? 1, maybe.

This year UGA team is by far the most clueless group from coaches to players I have ever seen. CMR better start taking control of this team because he is wasting a lot of talents. I hopes that he learned something from Les Miles that changing diapers and feeding these players juice boxs is not going to extend his stay at UGA. Fans and Alums will run his soft non-existence “Brain” out of town.
All of the UGA coaches clueless. They have lots of talents on this team and most are sitting on the bench while other team are putting in their best players on the field. Les Miles could careless of what the medias or people think. When he is on the field, he is trying to WIN at all cost. UGA coaches, please learn from a guy that is taking advantage of the talent that he has and that is why you either love Les miles or hate him. He is there to kick your A$$ when on the field.

I said it Friday on the Barnhart blog. We are a jinxed team for some reason. It happens from time to time to all programs. Unfortunately, it has happened to my dawgs two years running. After AJ scored I new coach Fab would screw the kick-off up so I went to get a coca cola. Sure enough, when I got back LSU had the ball on our 38. I dare anyone to name another elite program who’s fans would do such a thing after taking a lead with one minute left? ? Alabama? No. UF? No way. USC? Hell no. See my point… Coach Fab must go.

Ed, I agree to a certain extent. We need a new defensive coordinator. It just won’t be Muschamp. What our defense is lacking became glaringly obvious Saturday. We no longer have the line backer play that we had under BVG. That was all him. That is the face of the defense. That is where the heart and soul of the defense lies. We have one linebacker making 16 tackles Saturday. We need a coordinator that is of the linebacker mindset and not of the defensive back scheming mind set.

UGA, Coach RICHT, is playing a dangerous game with the program right now. There needs to be some changes, and quit acting as if the program is on sound ground. Fabris needs to go! Period! His special teams and erractic play from DE’s has been exposed for what they are, FRauds!Coach Martinez needs to be demoted from D.C., and Bobo needs to go study this offseason with NFL offensive coaches that are successful, this is ridicoulous!! I think you have two compotent offensive minds on the staff, that is Richt and Bobo, don’t know if Coaches Ball, McClendon and Seareals even contribute to game plan, other that coaching their positions, are they football smart?(gameplanning). Same with Martinez, Does he have enuff help? Garner has gotten fat and out of shape, can he teach technique anymore, Jancek’s knowledge is what? He doesn’t talk. Fabris(see above). Having played and coached collegiate football, there is one option everyone seems to be missing and that is team chemistry. Something tells me that some of these players arent getting along and or don’t associate with each other. I’ll bet the house, it has something to do with the secondary and the safeties, just my expierence. When one group is under performing there is usaualy something wrong in or around that group. I agree. This team is so baffling I could see a complete focused effort with a week off and beating FL and then losing to Auburn and or Kentucky.
The kickoff coverage is maddening. We would have been better off kicking it off out of bounds looking back on the situation.
I for one though was very heartened by what looked like good old time football. The fight, blood and guts hustle that seemed to be missing in the OSU game was there for sure. We played an extremely talented team almost straight up and that was encouraging but where to go from here?
I want to think of ‘07 and having two losses after the UT game and coming out and punching people in the mouth the rest of the year but that’s not realistic. We still have the east to play for but that’s not really viable either. Bottom line it’s the first year I’ve questioned Richt’s ability to fix the problems and that saddens me.

The type of defensive scheme does not allow for stout defense anywhere but the red zone. If they are going to play in this scheme they have to be more urgent and opportunistic. They also have to tackle better.
Fundamentally they don’t do a whole lot right.

I thought the kick off out of bound rule states that it’s 30 yards from the point of kickoff unless the ball doesn’t travel that far in which case it would be taken where it goes out. In this case kicking out of bounds would’ve given it to LSU on our 45 which would’ve been marginally better than how it ended up.

This is to the “lozer” who posted at 10:46 am, probably a 13-year-old skipping school and typing on Mommy’s computer… UGA currently ranks 13th in the HISTORY OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL for win percentage, and 11th in # of wins IN DIVISION I HISTORY. (21 wins more than LSU, who is in 12th place.) Only 7 schools have had more 10-win seasons than UGA, and under our current coaching staff we have rapidly shot up that list. We have the 4th-winningest active coach. While nobody is happy with where we are right now, this overall record of success is most assuredly the definition of “relevant”. That’s why most of us just laugh as idiotic GT, UF, etc fans come on here and try to say otherwise. Bill, you’re the only one at the AJC who tells it like it is. Dead-on comments. Fabris needs to go, and CMR needs to hire the special teams coach from Virginia Tech. When was the last time they even tried to block a punt? And you know they’ll get burned at least one more time this year on a fake punt because the rush is almost non-existent. While I admire Cox for his character, it’s also time to get Murray into the game so that he’ll be ready for next year. Otherwise, AJ will have his third QB in 3 years and we’ll be starting from scratch again. Ealey should be given all the reps the next game to see what he can really do. This RB by committee thing ain’t working — a good running back needs 15-20 carries to get worked up into a lather (see Knowshon last year.) The penalty thing doesn’t seem to be a real concern to Richt, and after what he said in the preseason about going back to basics, this puzzles me. Bobo’s play calling is so predictable, my nine year old can tell me what’s coming next. While the D played a decent game, the secondary is still horrendous and missed tackles at the wrong times continue to haunt. I also think the LSU offensive play was exactly that, offensive, so that could have something to do with it. A Florida or an Alabama would destroy UGA if this kind of play continues (see last year.) I hate to say it, but this season is about to unravel. The DAWGS could easily lose four more times this year. Haven’t we been having these same conversations for almost three seasons now?

For the 100,000th time, Fabris needs to be banned from setting foot on UGA’s campus! Effective immediately!
Putting in Gray to fair catch punts eliminates an important facet in the return game, the opportunity to get a big return and get outstanding field position at the least or to take one to the house. Also, a nice return can provide the spark that the offense needs to ride the momentum. Let Boykin handle punts as he is very eager to try and make a play.
I’m not going to rehash the same redundant remarks about Bozo and Martinez and whether they should go but there is one thing I do know, it all comes down to accountability and Richt demmands none from his coaching staff. It has become quite evident since last season that Richt’s calm, even demeanor reflects upon his players as they seem to feed off his vibe. I have made it a point to watch alot of coaching staffs on the sidelines lately to assess their interactions with players and the top programs coach up their players with intensity to the last tick of the clock, something that is missing with this staff except for Martinez on Sat.
Besides Curran, is there anybody else on this team that practices sound fundamental tackling?

He hits the hole faster harder and seems to fall forward whenver hit. I watched this kid in high school and he is without a doubt the best running back to ever play high school ball in the state of georgia. with this said im sure we will still use the other two backs for a certian period of time each week and get zero accomplished with them. Samuels was a line backer coming into his college career and runs the ball just like a line backer that has just intercepted a pass. Why cant we make a move there and help ourselves out a little on defense and let ealy tote the rock? And as far as our head coach showing absolutely zero emotion is another topic for another day. The 2008 defense gave up 23 pts. in one game and had thirteen games where the defense allowed 21 pts. or less.
The 2005 & 2006 defense led the nation in total defense and Foster won the Frank Broyles Award for best assistant coach in the country in 2006.
