After a string of night games, this will be the first really traditional game day in the Classic City this season, and there’s plenty going on in Athens for Dogs fans besides a hugely important game.
The festivities actually get under way tonight, with the UGA Alumni Association’s Member Discount Night at the UGA Bookstore, where alums presenting their Alumni Association membership cards can get an extra 10 percent discount on top of their regular 10 percent discount, meaning 20 percent off all purchases. Mascot Uga VII will be on hand.

Hairy Dawg and the cheerleaders at Hodgson's. (Hodgson's Pharmacy)
Saturday morning, there’s a mini pep rally of sorts as Hairy Dawg and the UGA cheerleaders make their traditional pregame visit to Hodgson’s Pharmacy in Five Points. Gisela Hodgson, one of my high school classmates and wife of my lifelong friend Hal Hodgson, says they’re expecting the cheerleaders to show up between 10 and 11 a.m. at the new store (1260 S. Milledge Ave.), located next to the old Hodgson’s location.
UPDATE: Hodgson’s now says the cheerleaders are expected between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m.
David Ching of the Athens Banner-Herald reports that Windell Middlebrooks, the pumped up delivery guy from the Miller High Life TV commercials, will be visiting bars and tailgates around Athens throughout the day on Saturday.
The UGA Bookstore, across Sanford Drive from the stadium, will have Larry Munson signing copies of his recently published autobiography, “From Herschel to a Hobnail Boot: The Life and Times of Larry Munson,” and Herschel Walker will be on hand to sign copies of his “Breaking Free.” Both signings are set to run from 10 a.m. to noon. Saturday.
Former UGA and NFL quarterback Fran Tarkenton and co-author Jim Bruton will be signing Tarkenton’s new memoir “Every Day Is Game Day” at the UGA Bookstore from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The book includes a section on Tarkenton’s days growing up in Athens and playing for Wally Butts. (Tarkenton and Bruton also will be signing at the bookstore at 5 p.m. today.)
Vince Dooley will sign copies of his hard-to-find “Dooley’s Play Book” at the bookstore from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
And while they don’t have a book to sign, Bulldog legends Kevin Butler and David Greene will autograph fans’ memorabilia at the UGA Bookstore from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
And about two hours before game time, which means around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, fans can greet the Georgia team, along with the Redcoat Band, at the Dawg Walk in the Tate Center parking lot off Lumpkin Street.
It’s also a big recruiting day in Athens, and coach Mark Richt stressed the importance of a big crowd for the Dawg Walk. “I want to encourage all our fans to get jacked up and ready to go,” Richt said. “I want the Dog Walk to be wild. I want the students to be crazed as always and make the pregame warmups an exciting time and get it the stands as fast as you can because it’s going to be a special day for college football. It’s the kind of game that everybody dreams of growing up. If a kid wants to play college ball, he watches SEC football and dreams about games like these. We’re excited to be in a game that has the magnitude that is does.”
It should be the kind of day that makes college football special!
Go Dogs!
FALL BASEBALL
If you’re still in Athens on Sunday, David Perno’s Diamond Dogs begin their annual Dogs-Pups intrasquad series at 2 p.m. at Foley Field. The series will continue with afternoon games next week. All scrimmages are free and open to the public.

I wondered the same thing. How can football fans get excited about gameday from Boston College?
I think ESPN gave Joe Paterno his turn in the spotlight last week and thought it would only be fair to give Bobby Bowden his.
Bill
That’s some lineup.
Tarkenton and Greene, 2 best Qb’s in school history
Butler, best kicker in school history
Walker, best running back in school history.

Dooley,
Why isn’t someone from the defensive side of the ball writing a book? That’s only thing missing from that group.

Well if all of you “Hey,look at me, the big bad SEC” homers would do a little research, you would realize that ESPN is taking Gameday to BC to make everyone aware that BC linebacker Mark Herzlich is fighting Ewing’s sarcoma, a form of cancer and the students are starting a fundraiser there. There is more to life than football and UGA. I cant for the life of me understand why you would want Gameday back in Athens anyway, hasnt turned out that good lately has it?

Georgia Th(thug)eck. What a Joke and a truly ugly campus, see what those rich tech alums think about there school. My daddy was a techie and died a drunken nerd in the Clairmont 1980. Pretty pitiful for a EE who worked for the space program and never care for his family just like Tech alums do not care about the ugliest school in the South. Oh yeah, want to know how I really feel. and LSwhooooooooooo! GoooooDawgs!!! Athen’s what a great place! Thank you Lord.

It’s a football blog. Cancer has ruined lives of my family, but I am on a football blog. You know, the recreational sport that many people partake in to escape the often cruel realities of life. It is a football blog.
And you post was not about cancer awareness. Your post was intended to degrade Georgia fans. Stop being a dick! You should be ashamed of using it as leverage on a football blog.

Can the High Life guy bring some Yuengling? Oh crap, I guess he would say I’m undeserving for that.
Looking forward to this weekend. I can’t really say anything bad about LSU fans. Last time they were in Athens, we had a blast and they just said “oh well” after the game and partied on. We also caught a ride back to the motorhome campground at LSU last year from a very nice LSU fan. Have fun except for the game cajuns!
