Caleb King has been maddeningly inconsistent. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
It’s the nature of this year’s Georgia team that for every performance or trend that gets fans excited there’s something disturbing to fret over. Here are the more notable ones from this week. …
The offensive line so far is only average. They did a pretty good job of protecting Joe Cox Saturday night, keeping ASU sackmeister Dexter Davis at bay, but Cox was hurried several times, including on the first of his interceptions when a blocker failed to pick up a stunt by one of the Sun Devil defenders. The run blocking was also poor, expecially in short yardage situations. Every time the Dogs needed just a yard, it seemed the line got no push at all. Yes, there’s been some reshuffling by coach Stacy Searels in the wake of the loss of Trinton Sturdivant in the opening game, but considering the collective experience and versatility of this bunch, you’d have expected the OL to be further along at this point. And the false starts just have to stop.
A.J. Green is phenomenal. As long as he’s on the field, Georgia fans should feel optimistic.
Joe Cox is running hot and cold. He made some great throws Saturday night, particularly to A.J. Green and Rantavious Wooten, but he also threw two boneheaded picks on the same skinny post pattern to the same defender and threw into double or triple coverage too many times. Cox is still a relative rookie and hopefully will learn from these mistakes.
Turnovers. Argh! This merits a separate discussion, but it’s a trend that can’t continue. The fact that Georgia is 3-1 after giving up three turnovers in each of its games is mind-boggling. How long can Georgia defy the odds?
These Dogs are comeback kids. This may explain why the turnovers haven’t proved fatal since the opener. Unlike last year’s Dogs, this team refuses to give up. They’ve come from behind in each of their three victories. That trait, combined with Georgia’s obvious talent, is a reason to be extremely hopeful.
But where did the running game go? Neither Caleb King nor Richard Samuel seems to want to lay claim to the job fulltime. King so far is the more productive runner, but he’s plagued by fumbles and dropped passes. Samuel showed what he can do with a big opening against Arkansas, but he doesn’t run hard consistently and still goes down to easily. I think King is our best bet, but he needs to step his game up a couple of notches.
Which defense will show up against LSU? Hopefully the one we saw Saturday night and not the one from the two previous games, since the Tigers are likely to come out throwing long after their success in that aspect of the game this past week. Georgia did get a lot more pressure on the QB against Arizona State, but they weren’t facing a first-rate offense. And while the pass defense was better this week, the rushing defense lapsed a bit. Still, progress was made. Now let’s see if Willie Martinez can dial up that kind of performance from his players two weeks in a row.
By the way, it was great to see Geno Atkins get a couple of big stops. It seems like starting Kade Weston over Atkins lit a fire under him.
Players I look forward to seeing in action more: Rantavious Wooten, who had a couple of clutch catches Saturday; Justin Houston, who gives the Dogs a legitimate pass rush; and Cornelius Washington, who shows the potential to complement Houston in that area.
What else did you see that makes you feel good or has you concerned?

Play-calling: Why are there at least 5 offensive drives per game that goes absolutely nowhere, they have no purpose or reasoning? Can Logan Gray throw the ball? (he did well in the spring game) Or is Coach Richt afraid of Gray doing well and causing a quarterback controversy? Can we use one of the 300lbs linemen as a fullback to block on 4th and 1? The rotation between Caleb King and Samuel is hurting both backs, they are not created equal, Samuel is a north/south runner, who’s specialty is running between tackles and sometime straight into tackles. King is elusive has more upside with a pro-style offense, he can find holes and lets his blocking develop. With Cox making mistakes like a rookie (throwing into double/triple coverage, poor game management) why not just start a rookie, or at least someone that has a arm to stretch the field, which would open up the run game. Cox has a noodle for a arm even when allowed to set his feet and throw with great protection, when pressured to move within/outside the pocket he doesnt have a prayer. I’m sure LSU, Flordia, and Auburn defensive coordinators will send someone on every play to render him useless. Arizona figured that out too late saturday.
Defense: We all know that the more stationary a quarterback can stand, the more accurate his passes, but do Georgia defensive coaches understand this? More stunts, and blizing will help the corners. Rambo should start, #3 should be the new nickle back in passing situations.
Dancing doesn’t bother me, because obviously the coaches have a problem motivating the players so they need music to stimulate them…what ever works.

Yeah, what was the deal with the Dawgs celebrating & dancing towards the end when they weren’t even winning???? Not just a lack of class, but delusional at best. Even as a lifelong fan & ‘81 alumn, this is alarming. Bad coaching, wasted talent, total lack of focus & discipline make this a disaster of a year. Sure, a win is a ein, but it’s an embarrassment.

Uuugh and the others who do not like the “dancing”….
Thanks for your support of the team. Honestly, the fact that you all weathered the storm (pun intended) is a credit to our fanbase! Thank you for that. However, having played, myself, in tense situations, if you have time to stand there and “worry” about not making a mistake, that’s when you make mistakes. This is why many coaches will try to “ice” a kicker by making him think about it. Dancing, or whatever they were doing keeps them loose and allows their instincts to take over, thus resulting in a much more pleasant result for the fans.
Bottom line is that I would not consider that showboating or not being serious about the outcome. These guys are finely tuned athletes and I would argue that they need to allow their instincts to guide them more. Being uptight and worrying about playing the game (it is a game, afterall) will only lead to playing against their ability and playing not to lose. That’s a recipe for disaster.
We (they) won the game…let ‘em celebrate!

The offensive line is not doing too good a job. I would try Boling at left tackle, Chris Davis at left guard, Ben Jones at center, Cordy Glenn at right guard, and Vance or Justin Anderson at right tackle. It would at least be worth trying for a couple of series. Seems Aron White is being called for a lot of penalties. Why not play Orson Charles?

Mark Bradley is right WM has done nothing for 5 yrs and has shown no improvement. If I do this at my job I am gone in a few short months time not 5 yrs.
WM has made a good salary ($300,000)a yr, over 5 yrs, more than I will make in 25 yrs. Hopefully he hasn’t spent it. I can understand having a down yr or two not 5. No Georgia team has given up an avg of 33 ppg.
If Dameon Evans wants the coordinators to stay on thats fine too.
Just allow me to pay face value for my tickets and not make me have to give an additional donation for each one, and oh yea allow me park for free.
Your right its a down economy and I shouldn’t be expected to give so much during these hard times to watch poor coaching from coordinators

I have also noticed that few people have mentioned the fact that it was a torrential down pour Sat.
I do have to question, at this point in the season, though, if the dawgs should just scrap the wildcat thing where Logan Grey comes in and gets tackled for a loss. I was excited about it over the summer, but maybe it just doesn’t work.

1) orson charles and aj green must be on the field all the time…orson is really a great looking player
2) if logan goes in a qb (and he should a few times every game)…please do something that is not so predictable…can he pass? if he can’t, aaron murray should be rotated in…we have to have somebody who can come in if cox is hurt…murray needs some playing time if gray can’t pass.
3) baccari rambo looked solid in the defensive backfield…brandon smith needs more playing time…just like greg reid is the star at fsu, braden smith can do a lot more and the more he plays the more confident he will be.
4) special teams are still trying that foolish directional kick…it is idiotic when you have a kicker who can kick deep and wants to kick deep.
5) no dancing on the sidelines until we are up at least 5 touchdowns.
6) got to start caleb king and use samuel’s sparingly until he learns to make a cut (i havn’t seen them throw to samuel’s either…i assume he can’t catch) and not fall down over the slightest obstacle…where is ealey and

With our D seeming to be slipping away (the game v. AZ ST hasn’t convinced me) from the glory days of the Junkyard Dawgs coupled the distinctly UN-Tailback U troubles we have in our backfield (where’s Ealey? why couldn’t we get Mack Brown?), I’m wondering what Richt is doing with this program and where he plans on taking it.
Granted we ARE 3-1, but we BARELY won the three games, all of which are against UNRANKED teams. We lost to a greatly overrated OK ST and we’re getting to the meat of our schedule.

I am also a little worried about some of the plays that take a long time to unfold. Some of those slow roll out pitches and delayed draw plays will get smothered against LSU, UT, and UF. On the whole, I think the O could get to it a little quicker sometimes, catch the D off guard, particularly in short yardage situations.

MoDawg – great post; I would only add that the ASU players were certainly not “offended” as Uuugh said, because they were dancing too.
Frankly, I don’t care what some fan that needs to lighten up thinks. They danced, they moved the ball down the field on the last drive, they won. Bottom line, it worked. The student section is the loudest, most supportive part of the stadium. I would be offended if the players didn’t go celebrate with them at the end of a win.
Haven’t looked – does anyone in the country have a worse turnover ratio than UGA? If we can just change that one stat, we win 10 or more this season instead of 8 or less.

Ken, I think in the coming games you will see more Orson. He is an exciting player to watch.
I come from the old school of Dooley ball, three yards and a cloud of dust, or mud. But with a QB as HC and another QB as OC, they are going to call alot of pass plays. And our best offensive weapon is AJ. We just have to keep finding ways to get him the ball. So my beloved running game will suffer.
Hard to believe you can get a first down on the one yard line and not grind out a touchdown running the ball.
Thank you Lord for AJ and Blair Walsh.
And I wish Tim Tebow a swift recovery. I had a concussion once and the whole work week was one blank. I had to write everything down I did as I would forget it an hour later. I should have stayed at home, but did not want to let my work team down.

If you really think the defense was that great I hope you taped the game and re-watch.
Go back and watch how many times their QB who was 10-32 over threw wide open recievers not to mention their running back who did a fine job of running up and down on us.
Now had the QB would have completed a few more passes Im afraid to say there would not have been a happy outcome.
The defense looked the same, wide open people all over the field. I think we just benefited from a wet ball. They became one dimensional with the run and we finally stopped it.
Again I wish I could say the defense has changed but after watching coach Willie for 5 yrs its a Corso “Not So Fast” momment

Here goes:
Good things.
1. AJ and Curran are All American
2. Wow, we are littered with playmakers all over the field. It almost looks like a UF caliber of players on our offense.
3. We have a heck of a kicker, would be even better if they would let him boom the kickoffs all of the time.
Now for the not so good:
1. Coaching, Coaching, Coaching… Prime examples from just last week. 2nd and Goal from inside the 1. A toss sweep? 3rd and 6 game on the line fly pattern that worked only because of an All American receiver. 1st Down 23 yard line 1:30+ two timeouts left you decide to let your kicker win the game on a soaking wet field without even attempting to advance the ball? All of the the 3rd and 1 4th and 1 plays handing to the fullback when they were clearly ready for it and whipping our line all night? As many have said a little imagination with Gray.
Now my real beef with Richt as a head coach. After every one of the games the year we have heard how this player or that unit on the team has to step up and play better. Not once have we heard we or this coach has to step up and coach a better game. 99% of the coaches in America take responsibility for the play of their team. Our coaches do not.
2. Fire Willie, go back and watch the game the wet ball, ASU QB and WR’s were are only defense. We didn’t even stop the run very well.
3. Another person better not say young guys are causing the problems. It is our JR.’s and SR.’s whose play is letting the team down.
4. My goodness, whoever thinks this directional kick crap works for UGA needs to be fired immediately
5. We do not have a RB. Samuel can fly as he proved against ARK but he is a straight downhill runner without much elusiveness. C. King seems to have good vision but can’t run downhill that well and has butter fingers.
6. My goodness just look at this list: Green, T. King, Moore, Wooten, Charles, White, Brown, B. Smith, Samuel, C. King and Gray If this doesn’t beg for 4 and 5 wide sets spread the field then we will never do it. We could have DC’s up all night every week trying to figure out who to stop. Again no imagination from the coaching.

We’ve played four games now, and I have no idea what to expect from this team.
I do not think the defense has looked good at all, despite holding ASU scoring down enough to win the game. I still they do stupid things, and make some very strange defensive calls at some very WRONG times. I almost hate the way that two of our blitzes worked against ASU, because I’m afraid it’ll spoil WM and he’ll keep on calling it. And even adding a couple of successful blitzes against ASU, it has really cost us over the last few years. We blitz on third and eight, the opposing QB picks it up and hits the “safety valve” receiver, who runs all the way to the defensive secondary for a first down because the middle has been left wide open by the blitz. (Even though it got us a couple of sacks against ASU, it also cost us one first down, as well.)
We sure have been playing to the level of our opponents the last few years. Needed a last-second FG to beat Vandy a couple of years ago, had to swap TD’s to beat Kentucky last year…when was the last time we just blew out a team that we were clearly BETTER than? I wish we could do that now and again, and let some of our young players get some game time. Be nice to let Logan Gray run the team for an entire fourth quarter, wouldn’t it?
I still don’t understand how…against OSU, a team KNOWN for quick-count snaps on third and short…we get caught twice by quick-snaps in the fourth quarter. One cost us a first down, the other a TD…and our defense wasn’t overpowered…they were just standing around, not even set.

I totally agree that’s why they blame the players. From memory here is what we have heard from the coaches so far:
OSU Loss – Cox was sick and needed to make better decisions… Samuel needed to run harder and the O Line needed to block better. Too many penalties and turnovers
SC Win – Too many penalties and turnovers, Defense needs to play better as a unit the right plays were called the players were just not in position.
ARK Win – Too many penalties and turnovers still. Need better play from the defensive backfield and line
ASU Win – Too many turnovers and the O Line is now a problem.
Ok, let’s address this who responsibility is it to correct all of this, let’s see, hmmmmmmmmmm oh I know COACHES!!!!!!! Who has taken ZERO responsibility publicly, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I know COACHES!!!!!!!!!
Let’s see we have had what 11 or 12 turnovers so far this year. HMMMMMMMMMM, let’s see who has been responsible for 7 or 8 and should have been over 10. Since we aren’t suppose to talk about these young kids because they are fragile, I will just say the QB position. My point after the game the Sat. night, Gray, Murray or Mettenberg couldn’t have done much worse with turnovers. I am so sick of these coaches playing guys by what class they are in and not talent. College Football is littered with FR and SO dominating games and playing key positions. For some reason at UGA, most of our FR and SO we always here just not do the right things. Let’s talk about those Sr.’s that are doing such a wonderful job and have earned there playing time. Evans, my goodness what a joke, Cox 7 or 8 turnovers, Vance false start and holding king, Prince Miller I must fumble a punt, commit holding or interference every game, Owens I am nowhere to be found on D, and the list goes on….
Bulldog Nation I am just as happy as every other lifelong fan that we are 3-1 but I am a realist and 0-4 it could and almost should just as easily be. It’s just sickening to me and in my personal opinion that we are wasting so much talent at UGA from a lack of coaching. Oh and I do think CMR is the right man to head the program overall but if his loyalty and lack of killer instinct prove to be fatal to the team then he too must go.

Playing devils advocate. Fire every coach including CMR. OK what now? To fire anyone you must have viable replacement to come in. That means a national search. No coach worth wanting will want to take on a program in turmoil in the middle of the season. If you think changing the offensive , defensive , and special teams philosophy will occur the moment the new coaching staff is announced then you you are being delusional. CMR may make internal changes but I really doubt he will no matter how bad things have gotten. Who does he have to promote? The reality is that unless Adams or Evens recklessly fires CMR in the middle of the season nothing is going to be done on the fire (place the coach of desire here) front. I agree with most on the flaws the coaching staff has shown from top to bottom but the review of change if any will occur after the bowl games have played out.

The UGA band should play to keep our players pumped and maybe some music in instrumental format only. South Carolina plays 2001 to get their players pumped and also plays other catchy tunes. Yes lets talk about the offensive line play, they switched Cordy Glenn to left tackle and this is what happens. The alignment we had the two previous weeks worked great scoring 41 and 52 points respectively, so what do they do, play around with their alignment. These guys need to play at the same position as much as possible that way they can get used to playing with each other and knowing what the other guys will do in certain situations, that way they will jell into a soliod unit. Besides Glenn needs another year as he misses too many assignments to be starting. On a brighter note yes in watching the replay a couple of times there is definitely improvement overall.

I don’t even see Murray or Gray near CMR during play calling and Bobo is high and dry in the box…a real coach wouldn’t hesitate to pull the trigger and do what’s best for the team…I don’t care if they are 3-1, as they’ were just as close to being 0-4…good luck w/ that record JC

@SenoiraDog….. Since when did the coaches start making the players have turnovers? Players have to execute at each position so the team can be successful!
Richt is good but his assistants must go! Also you fans should enjoy this team at least they are exciting! The Buckeyes have a 5 tool quarterback and we are currently the most boring college football team in the country.
I like watching the Bulldogs they are wxciting to watch! You never know what is going to happen!

Can Ealey run the ball or not? Why not let him try? King looks great on some runs, passive on others (granted o-line did not get the job done). Samuel will be a linebacker next year. Samuel is straight ahead runner…no moves..which is fine when everyone is blocked.
