Pitchfork Nation talking UGA trash

North Campus after the South Carolina game. (Tom Ritch / Special)

North Campus after the South Carolina game. (Tom Ritch / Special)

The tailgating jerks who left their unbagged trash behind and the disgusting cretins who couldn’t be bothered to use one of the portable toilets on North Campus when the Dogs met South Carolina two weeks ago are in reality still trashing UGA long after the cleanup.

Unfortunately, the news and photos of the sorry scene after the tailgaters had departed have spread across the country, drawing particular interest in areas that have schools facing the Dogs this season.

So it is that Arizona Republic columnist Bob Young has advised Arizona State fans coming to Athens that they better bring their galoshes because while all football fans enjoy talking a little trash, “Georgia fans prefer to roll around in it.”

He goes on: “Now we don’t mean to paint Bulldogs fans with a broad brush. Not all of them consider living ‘up town’ to be the double-wide section of the trailer park. Nor does a ‘bright smile’ mean one has a full set of CornNuts in Georgia. No, Sanford Stadium, situated in the middle of the gorgeous Georgia campus, actually is considered one of the finer college football settings in the country.”

But, Young writes, fans not only left some 70 tons of trash strewn all about the place after the South Carolina game, but “worse still, there were reports of drunken fans piddling and pooping right there in the middle of the North Campus tailgating area. … Sort of gives a new meaning to ‘Between the Hedges.’ Go Dawgs! Yes, right there will be fine.”

He also notes that the UGA Library has had to be closed on game days because of drunken fans fouling the stairwells and other areas.

Now, most of us know that the louts who do this sort of thing represent only a small segment of UGA fandom. Many of them aren’t alums or students, don’t even have a ticket for the game and just show up to get blitzed.

But in Arizona and other places, that’s the image they have of Georgia Bulldogs fans.

Doesn’t that just fill you with pride?

To deal with the situation, the university and athletic association are putting out thousands more trash bags and trash receptacles on campus for this week’s game against the Sun Devils, and they’re increasing the number of portable toilets (which admittedly had very, very long lines during the pregame South Carolina tailgating). They also have recruited members of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to go around tailgating areas and remind folks to clean up after themselves.

Hopefully, the FCA is providing some big, mean-looking linemen for that job.

It would help for responsible tailgaters to join the effort, too, by reminding those who start to leave unbagged trash behind.

There’s not much else the school can do, short of blanketing the tailgating areas with cops authorized to make arrests, which President Michael Adams has said he’s reluctant to do.

Actually, in the case of those who can’t be bothered to find a toilet, I think Adams needs to rethink that stance.

Jail, not Sanford Stadium, is where those folks belong.

every fanbase has dopes, no doubt. remembering what happened at UGA, i did keep an eye on UF’s campus for the UT game this past weekend and i was largely impressed. UF student’s do not really tailgate — it’s only alums and fans, so they would be the ones to take the blame. however, they had groups passing out not only trash bags, but bags specificly for recycling before and after the game….well done by UF and their students (the “green team” i believe they were called).

I’m not at all making excuses for the fans who leave this king of mess behind, but part of the blame goes to having the games at night or late afternoon after tailgating fans have had all day to get “in the spirit”.

UGA is getting paid a lot of money to have these games on TV. Fine. Use some of that to help clean up the mess.

Again, that’s NOT an excuse…… but it just might be what comes with the territory when playing these games at night. Mikey Adams could help reduce the problem by saying “no thanks” to all the TV money and just hold the games during the regular daytimes. But that (turning down the money) will never happen.

So, deal with these unfortunate consequences. Hopefully, these low-life fans will show more respect for the University starting this weekend.

I guarantee you could go to just about any major football college campus after a game and find a “trashed” spot, take a picture then paint the picture that the entire campus looks like that. In no way does that excuse what happened on North Campus, but making broad generalizations is so tired. Also, I know plenty of Florida, Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina “fans” who did not attend those universities, but support their teams with their attendance and money – does that make them any less of a fan?

Folks,

Every campus has people peeing in the bushes, leaving trash behind.Tons of it. Just like every college team has players doing underage drinking.

Lets stop thinking that UGA fans are any worse or better than UF fans, or UT fans, BAMA fans.UGA Fans are just as classy and classless as their rivals. I have see peeing at Florida. FSU.Trash piled up.et al.
It would be nice if the campus did not look like the Golden Corral on a Saturday night. It is up to the fans to have some respect for the school they love so much.

A buddy of mine picked up a party tent left behind at a Tenn game.Does that make the Tenn game lazy because he did not pack it up. Maybe he was too drunk to disassemble? His trash, now my friends treasure.

Urination

Fact is …if there is not a restroom and you got to go, you go. The urge does not disappear because there is a long line or lack of portapoties.I am not saying it is right. It is just a fact.

Hell, a hundred thousand people eating and drinking for the better part of 24 hours is bound to cause some aesthetic issues in the aftermath. I was raised to be more respectful, but that’s not how a large percentage of people are raised anymore. Bet it happens everywhere these numbers converge.

While the amount of trash left was regrettable, I think Mr Young should look no further than Tempe to find the most “trashy” fans in the country. After a trip out there last year, where every Dawg fan was greeted with an “F-U UGA” by some over roided dudes, we were all left with wondering why ASU hadn’t adopted a slogan of “Stay Classy, Tempe”. Geez, I love how the rest of the country looks down upon Southern’s for their supposed prejudices and racism, then turn around and use the same to label us as hillbillies and rednecks. Let’s see what happens on Saturday and who the true “Classy” bunch is; Georgia fans or ASU “Shocker” fans.

Old Dawg

I’m not defending the behavior of the folks who have trashed the UGA campus, but if you go to any campus or NFL stadium you’ll experience similar behavior. I was a sports writer for many years and have seen people urinating behind the bushes at numerous PGA events, college campuses and off the side of Chicago’s Soldier Field. There’s one area of a Knoxville parking lot that always smells like an outhouse. The same is true for secluded spots in Auburn, the Tech campus and Gainesville.

And if you go to a Georgia Southern game, the big lot behind Paulsen Stadium has a lot of trash there, too.

At NC State the environmental education department passes out garbage bags, which helps keep trash to a minimum.

If fans really love UGA and its football team, they’ll correct their behavior. College football is a major part of any school’s life. Please remember, after the games are over campuses are for students, faculty and staff. They’re the ones who live, work and study there!

All that being said, the Republic’s Bob Young must have been really short on ideas for his column. Guess he’s not a graduate of UGA J school.

Bulldawg Rick: I doubt its just wannabee doing this. If it was, the situation could easily be self policed.

I wasn’t at the game but yes, North campus is usually worse because its closer to downtown but I’ve seen some very obnoxious, disrespectful students and alums (usually the younger ones) on a regular basis on game days.

I never could understand how fans of a school with such a beautiful campus could show such complete disregard for the school itself while being so rabid about the team. I don’t get it. Lets have some pride in a great school, not just in the G on our boys helmets.

First off, if you see somebody taking a dump behind a tree then please by all means bean him in the head with a can of beer. Make sure you knock him out so that he falls in his own crap.

Second, looking at that picture it appears that there are several over turned trash barrels. More likely the result of hoodlums just trashing the place, not UGA fans/tailgaters.

Third, next to the tree just off center, is that a piece of crap or a passed out South Carolina fan laying next to it?

Yeah, that’s pretty bad decorum, but finally the school is recognizing the need for more facilities on campus. With trash, there is no excuse, certainly, but bathrooms are a luxury the school has not adequately provided for years. Few buildings’ restrooms are open, and that number seems to dwindle every year. The lack of porta jons has only made the situation as bad as it is for public urination. I think the additional trash buildup has a lot to do with how far our parking has been pushed out over the years. People that are settting up their tailgating have to carry it from far away, more people come and bring more trash to talgates. Not justifying how bad that is but the school has done little to this point to help make the cleanup easier for people. At the very least people could bag it and leave it in a neat little pile, not strewn all over the place. But finally the school, that has only made gathering on campus harder, is pitching in to help. It’s about time.

More trash containers would be a good start. Reminders by the non-trashing fans to the trashers would help as well. Most tailgate spots are inhabited by the same groups of tailgaters every game. Therefore it seems to be the same people doing the trashing. Well folks, you have had your warning. If it happens again the trashy spots should be off limits for the next game. When reopened and it happens again, closed for the remainder of the season. I would hate to lose the tailgating priviledge all together.

I think it is rather obvious this picture depicts an act of vandalism carried out by a group of perhaps 2-25 people that came in well after the tailgaters left for home. It is a shame that this happened but I guarantee you this is not a result of hundreds of different tailgating groups all simultaneously deciding on one weekend to completely “trash” their areas. Agreed that the yo-yo’s who trashed the place are sorry and inconsiderate, but as several folks have stated, UGA does a horrible job of providing places to use the bathroom and place your trash after tailgates. They collect a lot of money from the season ticket holders just so they have the “opportunity” to park in “coveted” places like Hull st, etc, yet they don’t have the decency to give you your “bang for your buck”. The athletic association makes more PROFIT than any other athletic dept in the country, and it’s by a country mile. They can step up and help out. . . . since they are the ones who are throwing the game, etc., provide parking spots, etc.

If there were no trash cans or bathrooms in your own home. . . . you’d probably have a yard and house that looks like North Campus as well.

They will think we are some rednecks that belong in the trailer park! Grow up attendees and clean up your mess! I was in Gainsesville this past weekend–the campus was also trashed. Why is UGA getting spotlighted for this? People, clean up your mess!

Old Dawg, You must not have been to a Georgia Southern game in a while. Trash bags are handed out to fans to pick up their trash at games. If we run out of bags, most people will at least try to put their trash next to a can for collecting after the game. I pack mine out if the dumpsters are full. If you let this get outta hand, it’ll snowball.

I’m sure it will be dealt with by the school and by the Bull Dawg Nation…really I wouldn’t want to be the idiot that even thinks of leaving their trash this week. That pic is terrible I walked thru that area before and after after a game last year and was really amazed at how well it had been cleaned….this is a isolated event..but sad to see all the same.

I went to the game in Arizona last year and I only can add that I heard over and over how they thought we were great fans. I can’t tell you how many times I heard that we were “Nothing like A-hole USC fans”. The trash thing on campus is disgusting but absolutely doesn’t represent the majority of UGA fans. Why does the university need to put out additional trash receptacles, etc? Why can’t the fans bring a garbage bag, they sell them in stores, put their trash in the bag, put the bag in the trunk & take the bag home? Other people do it. Why can’t the Georgia Pigs do it?

I have been tailgating on North Campus for over 40 years. When I left for the SC game there was not a great deal of trash around. Most people like my group bagged their trash. Main problem might be Mikie the cheapskate Adams will not spend enough for enough trash containers. As far as people Peeing and Poopong in the doorways or other places. That problem sits squarely on Mikie Adams shoulders. He is too cheap to pay bathroom monitors so he locks up all the restrooms and then justifies this claiming people trash them. Don’t believe it would happen if properly monitored. Then has 2 or 4 porta potties for 4-5 thousand people who are tailgating for 8 or more hours. Fred Davidson or Charles Knapp would never treat the alums and fans like this.

The reason for this article is because ASU fans are only allowed to tailgate at their home games for like two hours before the game. The AZ Republic has no idea that this sort of thing goes on around the country at tailgaters. You have to drink at the bars in Tempe and then head to tailgate right before the game. It is not a true football experience.

What nobody mentions is that there are a total of two trash cans in the picture with this blog. Where is the garbage going to go if there is no place to put it. Lines during the peak of the tailgate averaged 45-60 minutes to get into a porta potty on North campus. The University was ill prepared, as they have been during many of the night kickoffs. They ran a video during the game about the 70 tons of garbage that is usually left at these night games and used the same number to get everyones’ attention after the game. Seems to me that the problem could be solved simply by reopening the buildings on campus along with adding enough trash cans/bags to handle the waste.

I am with a group that has been tailgating outside of the North Campus Parking deck for a number of years now. It used to be that a group would come around in the mornings and drop off card board trash bins and bags. Last year we noticed that while they did come by, they only had a few trash bins. For the South Carolina game there were NONE! I am not making any excuses for the group on the North campus lawn, that was shameful, but it does seem that the University is not doing thier part to help. Trash cans in the North Campus are over flowing with trash because there are not enough of them and they are not emptied at all during the day. The number of portapotties has decressed as well and the lines were outrageous before, again not condoning people going where they want but……

I will say though that a few years ago a group started coming around with bags for recyling, and they came by for the South Carolina game. All they ask is you put your plastic, bottles, and cans in a bag and they will come and pick them up. We always get several bags, we have a good sized group, and put plastic in one, bottles in another, and cans. We also are parked next to the dumpster so that it is easy for us to throw our trash away.

Hopefully Saturday things will be better, these night games do cause more havoc than the earlier games but the University has to be prepared and they do love that money coming in.

I’ve been seething about this since the story first came out. Don’t really care what connection you have to the University of Georgia. As far as I’m concerned anyone who has a ticket and wants to attend a game and/or tailgate is welcome. But we need to find a way to keep out those 15-20,000 folks who come only to party with no expectation of going to the game. I say turn loose the police and give them the authority to levy tickets with hefty fines and/or penalties for all those those that litter and defecate in public places. And if this can’t or won’t be done, then I say cut out the damn tailgating and make everyone grab a bite on the way into town. What in the hell are we becoming if we don’t have enough pride in the school we root for to pick up our trash and act with just an ounce of personal dignity and respect.

I do believe there is an element of this trash story that is not being told. I believe that the University has cut way back on provided disposal services. I have been in the waste industry for ten years and either we have twenty thousand more tailgaters or we have a reduction in service. My money is on the reduction in service. Ten years ago I never saw this kind of waste problem. It is a lack of planning on the University’s part for having tailgating moved into smaller locations without fully providing services for those areas. Remember, we used to just park where we wanted and tailgated there, no longer. This translates to areas that have adequate service with areas that have vastly inadequate service. As usual, prior proper planning was not used resulting in poor preventable performance. I neglected one of the p’s just in case my Granny was reading.

Also, I see a lot of talk about non alumni on here. Well I am not an alumni and I would never ever do some crap like that. Some of the comments rubbed me as if we (non alum) are low class and are the problem. This whole thing sickens me, I am a DIE HARD DAWG FAN and it just sickens me and I get tired of hearing how so many people put down on us (the state of Ga) talking about how redneck we are. I remember back when the Falcons played the Broncos in the SB and so many CO. people were talking trash about us living in trailers. Well guess what, I went to CO with my ex wife and there were more trailer there then I have EVER seen here. My point is we keep getting trash talk on these blogs but from my experience, you have the same if not worse everywhere. It’s not just a southern thing, so to all outsiders talking trash, take a look a yourselves and shut up about us!

Yes we had a few bad apples. Big deal. Look at all the cities that fans DESTROYED the city after winning championships. Is that supposed to be any better? I dont understand destroying your city after winning a championship, yeah way to celebrate.

If I was an alumni of UGA, I would treat my school with respect!!!!

I’m an Auburn student… Our campus started putting out large rolling trash cans that can be shared between tailgates and really reduced the amount of trash left on the ground after football games. Also starting weeks before the season they place mobile bathrooms (basically campers turned into large restrooms) to keep people out of most of the buildings on campus… Does UGA do any of this because it really helps

Enter your comments here Again, the value of photography and reporting in the newspaper-congrats to AJC. What is interesting and far more important is the fact that the library is closed because of a football game. How sad is that? Does this say volumes about the UG or not? At Arizona State the libraries -note the plural noun-stay open on Saturdays, football or no football. How disrespectful to the university to close their library-the conceptual center of any university. And,one wonders, what do students do who need to go to the library? I’m embarrassed for the UG. I wonder what the president of UG thinks about turning off the lights and locking the doors of the library. Sorry students, no learning today. I also wonder what if there is any such thing a campus police to ensure the safety of serious students who want to use the library rather than depending on evangelicals running around praying that the trash will be disposed of in a proper manner. Oh, one more comment, I can only quote Euripedes who said “Expect the unexpected.” Arizona State University will prevail on Saturday. You dogs will have to go to the library on Monday to find out about Euripedes.

Beat much as a kid?

moving on …

“Paul’s Johnson” … so, you think UGA girls are hotter than ASU girls? … you have no idea what you’re talking about .. more than anything else … having hot women is what ASU is known for … Listen, it’s one thing to be proud of you school or even your women … but now you just sound like one of those husbands that says … sure honey … you’re just as hot as that supermodel … seriously …

ASU wins this one by a “lucky 13″ points … (ASU +3 in turnover margin) …

This is going to be a down year for UGA … hell … we saw that in week one …

Correct. No excuse
BUT the University should have been out ahead of this rather than behind. It is not a new problem. I tailgate on South Campus and nearby are two large dumpsters. Fans seem very willing to carry trash to a dumpster that does not fill to overflowing. Trashcans regardless of how many will overflow and still look “trashy”.

Mr. Young, I compliment you on your ability to “trash” those people that you call “trailer trash” Shame on you. Judge not least you be judged. I graduated college. I live in Georgia and guess what I actually live in a house not that that makes one bit of difference. I have friends that live in trailers too but it never dawned on me that it would affect what kind of person they are. It would seem that the problem here would belong to the University of Georgia. They most certianly would have the power to stop this. If you have rules those who want to come will abide. I actually grew up around The University of Florida. I have lived in Georgia for many years now. It hasn’t hurt me one bit. The gators don’t have any problem trashing anything…or hey maybe college kids at big games do what they are allowed to do. So Mr. Bob as for your ability to be a respected journalist…I do not respect you! Write with dignity and don’t take pleasure out of “trashing those you write about” Write about hard working kids who are struggling to get an education in a poor economy. Those kids you are now trashing will be the ones that replace you and with much more dignity then you give others. Pray about it Bob! God helps those who helps themselves. I love to write too but postive always overides any negative when you write for those readers who need more then “trashing” God Bless you Mr. Bob.

While there’s no excuse for UGA tailgater’s leaving 70 tons of trash on campus, ASU fans and their local reporters there have no room to talk. Long Time Dawg is telling the truth. I and my family were also at last years game in Tempe. I saw no difference in what was left behind on UGA’s campus than the mountains of trash that littered ASU’s campus by drunken ASU fan’s mostly punk students that hurled obscenities at UGA fans that included my 6 grand children, ages 2 to 9 years. After the game, we spoke to a few ASU fans, all adults, that said they were planning to come to Athens for this years game. I hope our fans treat them w/respect and when they depart find the campus looking as beautiful as when they arrived. Also hope they depart on the losing end of the score board.

I am an alumni and have been attending basically every UGA home game since 1995 – many times tailgating on North Campus. I have never seen such a scene before. It was an isolated incident on North Campus for one game. I can confidently speculate that it was not students, alumni or true Dawg Fans of any type that did this. I am so tired of everyone, from the media to UGA’s administration, trying to act as if this is how UGA fans tailgate. Truth is, we don’t know who did it but true UGA fans will take a stand to keep it from happening again. Now stop pointing fingers at the fans, students, alumni and anyone else who loves this school or is in any way associated with the school. We don’t deserve the bad rap. We will be the ones to put a stop to it!

You Red Necks be sure to wash up also before coming to the game as I don’t like body odor as well. I’m glad your defensive coordinator is incompetent as our papers out here have stated and your Head Coach is afraid to fire him. We will run up a lot of points on your defense as our offense is rated very high among all teams this year and your defense is where it always is, on the BOTTOM!

I’m sick of this trash talk as well. I tailgated on North Campus that day, right around where the picture was taken and I did not see anyone throwing trash on the ground. My friends and I all threw our cans and cups in the garbage cans and bags.

This is what happened two Saturdays ago, a handful of scavengers and a few drunk idiots knocked over all of the cans and coolers and ripped apart the trash bags looking for aluminum cans and alcohol. When I returned to our tailgate spot, my cooler was stolen and every styrofoam cooler in the area had been destroyed. I saw no stomping on coolers before the game. The game was over four hours long and everyone was attending it, this gave a few bad apples a long time to riffle through North Campus.

Waiting for a night game….that’s a long time to tailgate. More trash….and more having to go! They need to be more prepared…that’s true. But take a lesson from Savannah at St. Paddy’s day…cops patrol for urniators and defficators along with public drunkeness. Get thrown in jail and fined for those offenses. The campus will smell better then….write tickets for leaving trash in tailgate areas (you generally need a vehicle to “tailgate”. For 20 years we attended the games…we always….repeat ALWAYS…took our trash home in trash bags.

Regarding them trash talking our campus….well…we’ll do our “talking” on the field.

Who cares what Arizoona State thinks? They have not had a team of note since Coach Frank Kush was there in the 60s and 70s. In those days he got tons and tons of national media exposure. He was very tough and allegedly made his players sprint up Camelback Mtn or one mtn near to their facilities. THAT was the BIG NEWS about them until they started playing outside of the WAC or the PAC 1 or whatever it is called.

The biggest bowl that I recall them going to over my 45+ years of watching NCCA ball was always the old Peach Bowl vs a power like NC State or West Virginia when Bowdon coached there. I’ll bet that they played the Peach about 5 times in the late 6os and early 70s and that IS their history. They DESPERATELY want the media attention now, so that when they come south to recruit, it will mean something besides NCCC baseball.

In my “vast” experience (11 years) on 4 state college campuses (B.S., M.S,. PhD) Georgia fans were the messiest and most devoted to tailgating beginning on Thursday, UA fans the most obnoxious, FSU fans the second drunkest (behind UGa) but the most sunburned, and UT fans the classiest (but pretty much like all the rest, actually, especially after the 30th time they sing Rocky Top). UGa student fans are the worst to show up late and leave early (no since ruining a good time by watching the game). UGa also suffers from some folks who live just off North Campus and come while things are quiet (ie, between the second quarter and the end of half-time) and tearing stuff up, breaking into cars, etc. This is only based on my experiences, however, and may not match the experiences others have had.

The mess IS partly the administration’s fault–there has been a severe shortage of trash cans and bathrooms. The trash cans should be emptied frequently during the pre-game and items left behind thrown away or given to the Potter’s House for resale. Georgia fans CAN be taught to do better, and getting the trash up before the game starts will foil the attempts of some of the off-campus crowd. That should be handled by the administration, perhaps led by its President.

I have been on the ASU campus as well, but not on a game day. I can imagine the stuff rots pretty quickly in the heat there, perhaps even by the end of the game.

While there is no excuse for trashing UGA (or any other location for that matter), part of this is due to the fact that there is more demand for tickets than tickets available. Thus you have groups just tailgating vs. actually going to the game and they have access to drinks the entire game. Again, no excuse and this is only part of the issue but should be put into the consideration when discussing whether or not to enlarge the stadium or not. And just a parting shot for the mentally challenge like dixie clear above – I’ve been to many a campus around the SE, including Ga Tech and UGA doesn’t have a monopoly on drunks or less than desirable fans. Go Dawgs!
