Pitchfork Nation talking UGA trash

North Campus after the South Carolina game. (Tom Ritch / Special)

The tailgating jerks who left their unbagged trash behind and the disgusting cretins who couldn’t be bothered to use one of the portable toilets on North Campus when the Dogs met South Carolina two weeks ago are in reality still trashing UGA long after the cleanup.

Unfortunately, the news and photos of the sorry scene after the tailgaters had departed have spread across the country, drawing particular interest in areas that have schools facing the Dogs this season.

So it is that Arizona Republic columnist Bob Young has advised Arizona State fans coming to Athens that they better bring their galoshes because while all football fans enjoy talking a little trash, “Georgia fans prefer to roll around in it.”

He goes on: “Now we don’t mean to paint Bulldogs fans with a broad brush. Not all of them consider living ‘up town’ to be the double-wide section of the trailer park. Nor does a ‘bright smile’ mean one has a full set of CornNuts in Georgia. No, Sanford Stadium, situated in the middle of the gorgeous Georgia campus, actually is considered one of the finer college football settings in the country.”

But, Young writes, fans not only left some 70 tons of trash strewn all about the place after the South Carolina game, but “worse still, there were reports of drunken fans piddling and pooping right there in the middle of the North Campus tailgating area. … Sort of gives a new meaning to ‘Between the Hedges.’ Go Dawgs! Yes, right there will be fine.”

He also notes that the UGA Library has had to be closed on game days because of drunken fans fouling the stairwells and other areas.

Now, most of us know that the louts who do this sort of thing represent only a small segment of UGA fandom. Many of them aren’t alums or students, don’t even have a ticket for the game and just show up to get blitzed.

But in Arizona and other places, that’s the image they have of Georgia Bulldogs fans.

Doesn’t that just fill you with pride?

To deal with the situation, the university and athletic association are putting out thousands more trash bags and trash receptacles on campus for this week’s game against the Sun Devils, and they’re increasing the number of portable toilets (which admittedly had very, very long lines during the pregame South Carolina tailgating). They also have recruited members of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to go around tailgating areas and remind folks to clean up after themselves.

Hopefully, the FCA is providing some big, mean-looking linemen for that job.

It would help for responsible tailgaters to join the effort, too, by reminding those who start to leave unbagged trash behind.

There’s not much else the school can do, short of blanketing the tailgating areas with cops authorized to make arrests, which President Michael Adams has said he’s reluctant to do.

Actually, in the case of those who can’t be bothered to find a toilet, I think Adams needs to rethink that stance.

Jail, not Sanford Stadium, is where those folks belong.

It’s definitely a younger crowd. I personally witnessed a group of pledges and their dates leave behind an exhorbitant amount of crap behind. Tell ‘em to bring the cops up there. As long as your not pi$$ing in the woods, starting a fight, or acting like a jacka$$ you should be fine, right? So what’s the big deal??

I say put the cops on North Campus and arrest the folks for littering or indecent exposure. No more of this slap on the hand and “now you better not do that again”.

WE ALL KNOW THAT YOU DO NOT NEED MUCH OF SOMETHING TO HAPPEN FOR AN OPPONENT TO TRASH TALK.IF YOU ARE BORN IN THE SOUTH YOU CAN’T DRIVE IN THE SNOW,WE ARE ALL RELATED,WE ALL DRIVE 4X4′S,WE DO NOT HAVE ALL OUR TEETH AND SO ON. IT IS A JOKE HOWEVER AND I THINK PEOPLE SHOULD ALSO POLICE THE SCENE AND CALL SOMEONE OUT.HOPEFULLY IT WON’T HAPPEN THIS BAD AGAIN AND PEOPLE WILL SHOW A LITTLE MORE CLASS.

Who cares what Arizoona State thinks? They have not had a team of note since Coach Frank Kush was there in the 60s and 70s. In those days he got tons and tons of national media exposure. He was very tough and allegedly made his players sprint up Camelback Mtn or one mtn near to their facilities. THAT was the BIG NEWS about them until they started playing outside of the WAC or the PAC 1 or whatever it is called.

The biggest bowl that I recall them going to over my 45+ years of watching NCCA ball was always the old Peach Bowl vs a power like NC State or West Virginia when Bowdon coached there. I’ll bet that they played the Peach about 5 times in the late 6os and early 70s and that IS their history. They DESPERATELY want the media attention now, so that when they come south to recruit, it will mean something besides NCCC baseball.

It was awesome; actually brought a tear to my eye. Good song by Corey Smith. We need to be sharing more of this kind of spirit building amongst ourselves.

In my “vast” experience (11 years) on 4 state college campuses (B.S., M.S,. PhD) Georgia fans were the messiest and most devoted to tailgating beginning on Thursday, UA fans the most obnoxious, FSU fans the second drunkest (behind UGa) but the most sunburned, and UT fans the classiest (but pretty much like all the rest, actually, especially after the 30th time they sing Rocky Top). UGa student fans are the worst to show up late and leave early (no since ruining a good time by watching the game). UGa also suffers from some folks who live just off North Campus and come while things are quiet (ie, between the second quarter and the end of half-time) and tearing stuff up, breaking into cars, etc. This is only based on my experiences, however, and may not match the experiences others have had.

The mess IS partly the administration’s fault–there has been a severe shortage of trash cans and bathrooms. The trash cans should be emptied frequently during the pre-game and items left behind thrown away or given to the Potter’s House for resale. Georgia fans CAN be taught to do better, and getting the trash up before the game starts will foil the attempts of some of the off-campus crowd. That should be handled by the administration, perhaps led by its President.

I have been on the ASU campus as well, but not on a game day. I can imagine the stuff rots pretty quickly in the heat there, perhaps even by the end of the game.

While there is no excuse for trashing UGA (or any other location for that matter), part of this is due to the fact that there is more demand for tickets than tickets available. Thus you have groups just tailgating vs. actually going to the game and they have access to drinks the entire game. Again, no excuse and this is only part of the issue but should be put into the consideration when discussing whether or not to enlarge the stadium or not. And just a parting shot for the mentally challenge like dixie clear above – I’ve been to many a campus around the SE, including Ga Tech and UGA doesn’t have a monopoly on drunks or less than desirable fans. Go Dawgs!
