Pitchfork Nation talking UGA trash

North Campus after the South Carolina game. (Tom Ritch / Special)

The tailgating jerks who left their unbagged trash behind and the disgusting cretins who couldn’t be bothered to use one of the portable toilets on North Campus when the Dogs met South Carolina two weeks ago are in reality still trashing UGA long after the cleanup.

Unfortunately, the news and photos of the sorry scene after the tailgaters had departed have spread across the country, drawing particular interest in areas that have schools facing the Dogs this season.

So it is that Arizona Republic columnist Bob Young has advised Arizona State fans coming to Athens that they better bring their galoshes because while all football fans enjoy talking a little trash, “Georgia fans prefer to roll around in it.”

He goes on: “Now we don’t mean to paint Bulldogs fans with a broad brush. Not all of them consider living ‘up town’ to be the double-wide section of the trailer park. Nor does a ‘bright smile’ mean one has a full set of CornNuts in Georgia. No, Sanford Stadium, situated in the middle of the gorgeous Georgia campus, actually is considered one of the finer college football settings in the country.”

But, Young writes, fans not only left some 70 tons of trash strewn all about the place after the South Carolina game, but “worse still, there were reports of drunken fans piddling and pooping right there in the middle of the North Campus tailgating area. … Sort of gives a new meaning to ‘Between the Hedges.’ Go Dawgs! Yes, right there will be fine.”

He also notes that the UGA Library has had to be closed on game days because of drunken fans fouling the stairwells and other areas.

Now, most of us know that the louts who do this sort of thing represent only a small segment of UGA fandom. Many of them aren’t alums or students, don’t even have a ticket for the game and just show up to get blitzed.

But in Arizona and other places, that’s the image they have of Georgia Bulldogs fans.

Doesn’t that just fill you with pride?

To deal with the situation, the university and athletic association are putting out thousands more trash bags and trash receptacles on campus for this week’s game against the Sun Devils, and they’re increasing the number of portable toilets (which admittedly had very, very long lines during the pregame South Carolina tailgating). They also have recruited members of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to go around tailgating areas and remind folks to clean up after themselves.

Hopefully, the FCA is providing some big, mean-looking linemen for that job.

It would help for responsible tailgaters to join the effort, too, by reminding those who start to leave unbagged trash behind.

There’s not much else the school can do, short of blanketing the tailgating areas with cops authorized to make arrests, which President Michael Adams has said he’s reluctant to do.

Actually, in the case of those who can’t be bothered to find a toilet, I think Adams needs to rethink that stance.

Jail, not Sanford Stadium, is where those folks belong.

You absolutely do not know that Bill. It’s what you want to believe. I’ve sat beside UGA students wizzing in their empty cups more than once.

As much as Dawg fans pay for tickets to the game free trash cleanup should be included.

And they need to add about a thousand additional porta johns.

And for those of you who criticize everything Red and Black it’s pure jealousy over the success of our program. That’s ok – we understand.

The reason for this article is because ASU fans are only allowed to tailgate at their home games for like two hours before the game. The AZ Republic has no idea that this sort of thing goes on around the country at tailgaters. You have to drink at the bars in Tempe and then head to tailgate right before the game. It is not a true football experience.

So ASU fans are talking trash about………trash. Huh, kind of like Tech, can’t engage you in a football discussion so bring the actions of a bunch of loser fans. Who’s to say it wasn’t S Car fans that left the trash. Anyway, with the ink this story has gotten, hopefully there will never be a repeat of this trashy behavior. The campus is as beautiful as any in the country. Lets keep it that way

You wouldn’t have nearly the mess if they played the game at a resonable time. 7 o’clock is too late for east coast; those people start tailgating at 7 am. It’s ESPN fault, follow the money!

It has long been known around SEC fans that UGA fans are of the worst behavior of any fans out there. As a fan of another SEC team who has attended many away games over the years, there is no atmosphere worse than in Athens as far as feeling safe as an opposing fan.

Wheres the story about trash after a game down at Tech? Oh yeah, you cant tell the difference between it and all the homeless folks newspaper tents set up everywhere. Get a life losers. Dont be jealous that we know how to party and 120,000 people actually show up to our campus. Indians wipe with their hands anyway so there is no evidence on your dumpy little campus! Go Dawgs

What’s funny is The Big House announces many times over the PA system no to “trash The Big House”…some fans are so sacred they carry they empty pop cups etc., up lots of steps to the trash bins. I figure at $65.00 a tkt, The Big House can hire it’s own cleaning staff. Pretty funny…

What nobody mentions is that there are a total of two trash cans in the picture with this blog. Where is the garbage going to go if there is no place to put it. Lines during the peak of the tailgate averaged 45-60 minutes to get into a porta potty on North campus. The University was ill prepared, as they have been during many of the night kickoffs. They ran a video during the game about the 70 tons of garbage that is usually left at these night games and used the same number to get everyones’ attention after the game. Seems to me that the problem could be solved simply by reopening the buildings on campus along with adding enough trash cans/bags to handle the waste.

Nothing worse than a bunch of drunken rednecks hanging out here for days on end. And yes, they are all, almost, UGA “fans”. What a lack of class.

I don’t get why everyone’s making a big deal out of this now. While I was there from 2002-2005, campus was regularly trashed come every Sunday morning. Me and a couple friends collected cans for about an hour and made $200.

And on the way to the stadium, I’d usually pass somebody peeing on a building. Why is this just now making news?

I am with a group that has been tailgating outside of the North Campus Parking deck for a number of years now. It used to be that a group would come around in the mornings and drop off card board trash bins and bags. Last year we noticed that while they did come by, they only had a few trash bins. For the South Carolina game there were NONE! I am not making any excuses for the group on the North campus lawn, that was shameful, but it does seem that the University is not doing thier part to help. Trash cans in the North Campus are over flowing with trash because there are not enough of them and they are not emptied at all during the day. The number of portapotties has decressed as well and the lines were outrageous before, again not condoning people going where they want but……

I will say though that a few years ago a group started coming around with bags for recyling, and they came by for the South Carolina game. All they ask is you put your plastic, bottles, and cans in a bag and they will come and pick them up. We always get several bags, we have a good sized group, and put plastic in one, bottles in another, and cans. We also are parked next to the dumpster so that it is easy for us to throw our trash away.

Hopefully Saturday things will be better, these night games do cause more havoc than the earlier games but the University has to be prepared and they do love that money coming in.

As a midshipman, I used to have to clean Tech’s stadium after games. I once found a set of teeth a Tech fan had left in the stands. I kid you not! Having to clean up after Tech fans (being a UGA fan) is a vision that still haunts me to this day.

We flew out to Phoenix last year for the game.We were treated very well.they
allowed us to park in faculty parking, escorted us to the campus and even showed us a shortcut walkway to the stadium.Post game we thanked many of their departing fans.As an alumnus I am very embarrassed over the trashing of our campus. Please have a little class. We are not the only ones however.I once attended a Tech v Auburn game.Post game some tech students were grabbing hats from older women that were Auburn fans.

A few tailgaters who do not ahve tickets can not leave all that trash. A good segment of the fans who attended the game also left a lot of trash too. Perhaps even SOuth Carolina fans, I am sure contributed. Think Spurrier dropped a Sun Visor down and left it :)

There is trash after tailgating; even if it should not be, it is. Just win teh game and we can leave all the trash on the blogs we want :)
