Pitchfork Nation talking UGA trash

North Campus after the South Carolina game. (Tom Ritch / Special)

North Campus after the South Carolina game. (Tom Ritch / Special)

The tailgating jerks who left their unbagged trash behind and the disgusting cretins who couldn’t be bothered to use one of the portable toilets on North Campus when the Dogs met South Carolina two weeks ago are in reality still trashing UGA long after the cleanup.

Unfortunately, the news and photos of the sorry scene after the tailgaters had departed have spread across the country, drawing particular interest in areas that have schools facing the Dogs this season.

So it is that Arizona Republic columnist Bob Young has advised Arizona State fans coming to Athens that they better bring their galoshes because while all football fans enjoy talking a little trash, “Georgia fans prefer to roll around in it.”

He goes on: “Now we don’t mean to paint Bulldogs fans with a broad brush. Not all of them consider living ‘up town’ to be the double-wide section of the trailer park. Nor does a ‘bright smile’ mean one has a full set of CornNuts in Georgia. No, Sanford Stadium, situated in the middle of the gorgeous Georgia campus, actually is considered one of the finer college football settings in the country.”

But, Young writes, fans not only left some 70 tons of trash strewn all about the place after the South Carolina game, but “worse still, there were reports of drunken fans piddling and pooping right there in the middle of the North Campus tailgating area. … Sort of gives a new meaning to ‘Between the Hedges.’ Go Dawgs! Yes, right there will be fine.”

He also notes that the UGA Library has had to be closed on game days because of drunken fans fouling the stairwells and other areas.

Now, most of us know that the louts who do this sort of thing represent only a small segment of UGA fandom. Many of them aren’t alums or students, don’t even have a ticket for the game and just show up to get blitzed.

But in Arizona and other places, that’s the image they have of Georgia Bulldogs fans.

Doesn’t that just fill you with pride?

To deal with the situation, the university and athletic association are putting out thousands more trash bags and trash receptacles on campus for this week’s game against the Sun Devils, and they’re increasing the number of portable toilets (which admittedly had very, very long lines during the pregame South Carolina tailgating). They also have recruited members of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to go around tailgating areas and remind folks to clean up after themselves.

Hopefully, the FCA is providing some big, mean-looking linemen for that job.

It would help for responsible tailgaters to join the effort, too, by reminding those who start to leave unbagged trash behind.

There’s not much else the school can do, short of blanketing the tailgating areas with cops authorized to make arrests, which President Michael Adams has said he’s reluctant to do.

Actually, in the case of those who can’t be bothered to find a toilet, I think Adams needs to rethink that stance.

Jail, not Sanford Stadium, is where those folks belong.

Wow, on the weekends you gotta dodge trash at the North campus of UGA. Every day and night of the year you have do dodge knives and bullets anywhere on the GT campus. Good article Bill, when ya gonna write one about the affect of 27 felonies against students at GT this year and the way that influences game crowds?

More trash containers would be a good start. Reminders by the non-trashing fans to the trashers would help as well. Most tailgate spots are inhabited by the same groups of tailgaters every game. Therefore it seems to be the same people doing the trashing. Well folks, you have had your warning. If it happens again the trashy spots should be off limits for the next game. When reopened and it happens again, closed for the remainder of the season. I would hate to lose the tailgating priviledge all together.

The image of someone bending over in a drunken stupor pinching off a loaf or worse yet, letting a brown flood come out is absolutely disgusting. I wonder how many people stepped in that mess?

I think it is rather obvious this picture depicts an act of vandalism carried out by a group of perhaps 2-25 people that came in well after the tailgaters left for home. It is a shame that this happened but I guarantee you this is not a result of hundreds of different tailgating groups all simultaneously deciding on one weekend to completely “trash” their areas. Things are not always as they appear.

North Campus looked the exact same way after the Alabama game last year. Get real, this is not just 2-25 rowdy drunks causing this. It’s a whole fanbase on north campus that includes students, non-students,parents, and many of you other idiot loser bulldod fans. Don’t believe me, i will post a picture of North campus looking even worse last year. You suck Georgia, your team, your Defense, your D-coordinator, your black jersey’s, and most of all, your FANS!

If that’s all that the AZ ST bunch can come up with to get them motivated, then I hope we open a can of good old fashioned whoop ass on them and send them back to the desert with their little devil tails between their legs. Prior to this I was neutral on the Sun Devils and their folks but now I’m not liking them too much.

If you go up to games every week and tailgate, and have season tickets you KNOW there are NEVER enough trash cans. I can honestly say I have drug my trash bag all the way to the gate just to find a place to put it. Please don’t blame this on everyone that goes up to the games. Most of the people use the few trash cans that are provided. Also if you tail gate in parking lots you may notices a bunch of people have begun renting their own portapotties because of the lines and the way they are treated.

Oh and I plan on having as much fun saturday as I did at the SC game if not more…rain or not..everyone better show these devils what UGA really feels like at night in Athens!

BJohnDawg:
No, that makes your buddy a thief. Plenty of people leave things (not trash) behind at tailgates to be properly packed up and taken home after the game. The fact that somebody waited til post-game to pack it up and take it home does not make it “fair-game”. Hope your buddy has enjoyed his stolen tent.

Agreed that the yo-yo’s who trashed the place are sorry and inconsiderate, but as several folks have stated, UGA does a horrible job of providing places to use the bathroom and place your trash after tailgates. They collect a lot of money from the season ticket holders just so they have the “opportunity” to park in “coveted” places like Hull st, etc, yet they don’t have the decency to give you your “bang for your buck”. The athletic association makes more PROFIT than any other athletic dept in the country, and it’s by a country mile. They can step up and help out. . . . since they are the ones who are throwing the game, etc., provide parking spots, etc.

If there were no trash cans or bathrooms in your own home. . . . you’d probably have a yard and house that looks like North Campus as well.

I’m serious

there is page after page of fan posts about how “the devils are better this year” thier “defense is number 1″ and there are plenty of score predictons where ASU fans are saying things like “ASU 44 Dawgs 17″

again I am serious and it is not just from one or two idiots but there are dozens of posts saying the same thing

The Dawgs and Dawg fans need to knock them out of their delusions

I attended UGA from 2001-2005 and saw this sort of trash almost at every home game. Why now is this becoming such a media spectacle? The cleaning crews would come at 4 am every morning and sweep it all up. It’s pathetic that this trash is spewed across campus-is this the message we want to send to the rest of the country? They will think we are some rednecks that belong in the trailer park! Grow up attendees and clean up your mess! I was in Gainsesville this past weekend–the campus was also trashed. Why is UGA getting spotlighted for this? People, clean up your mess!

Old Dawg, You must not have been to a Georgia Southern game in a while. Trash bags are handed out to fans to pick up their trash at games. If we run out of bags, most people will at least try to put their trash next to a can for collecting after the game. I pack mine out if the dumpsters are full. If you let this get outta hand, it’ll snowball.

I’m sure it will be dealt with by the school and by the Bull Dawg Nation…really I wouldn’t want to be the idiot that even thinks of leaving their trash this week. That pic is terrible I walked thru that area before and after after a game last year and was really amazed at how well it had been cleaned….this is a isolated event..but sad to see all the same.

I went to the game in Arizona last year and I only can add that I heard over and over how they thought we were great fans. I can’t tell you how many times I heard that we were “Nothing like A-hole USC fans”. The trash thing on campus is disgusting but absolutely doesn’t represent the majority of UGA fans. I think we showed them last year what type of fans the “true” UGA fans are.

Like I said the other week, Bulldogs on the field but “pigs” in the stands.
Why does the university need to put out additional trash receptacles, etc? Why can’t the fans bring a garbage bag, they sell them in stores, put their trash in the bag, put the bag in the trunk & take the bag home? Other people do it. Why can’t the Georgia Pigs do it?

I have been tailgating on North Campus for over 40 years. When I left for the SC game there was not a great deal of trash around. Most people like my group bagged their trash. Main problem might be Mikie the cheapskate Adams will not spend enough for enough trash containers. As far as people Peeing and Poopong in the doorways or other places. That problem sits squarely on Mikie Adams shoulders. He is too cheap to pay bathroom monitors so he locks up all the restrooms and then justifies this claiming people trash them. Don’t believe it would happen if properly monitored. Then has 2 or 4 porta potties for 4-5 thousand people who are tailgating for 8 or more hours. Fred Davidson or Charles Knapp would never treat the alums and fans like this.
