Jacksonville is right place for Dogs-Gators

ga flaJust about everyone in the Bulldog Nation has an opinion on keeping the Georgia-Florida game in Jacksonville and those opinions have been aired here many times. But since the UGA Athletics Board has decided that the game should stay there, at least for another six years, I figured some of you might want to vent one way or the other on the subject.

As far as I’m concerned, they made the right decision if you want Georgia-Florida to remain one of college football’s marquee games, like Oklahoma-Texas. As I’ve written before, it’s the 50/50 split and cocktail party atmosphere that elevate this match-up above just another important game in the SEC East.

You can make a convincing case for playing the game in Athens and Gainesville or at least alternating home-and-home with Jacksonville, but in the end that would take away from what makes Georgia-Florida special and a lock every year for a national TV slot.

That’s my take. So now that they’ve made it official it will stay in Jacksonville, feel free to share your thoughts.

Best idea is to stay in Jax. 42,000 seats every year compared to 5,000 in Gainesville every other year is a no brainer. The very idea of playing any game in the Dome, 1 hour from our home stadium, is stupid. If playing in ATL is a huge recruiting advantage for Saban why is playing in Jax. not a recruiting advantage for UGA in Florida? Alabama and Florida can’t sign every prospect in ATL and Florida.

Yes, D. Evans just recommended it stay for another 6.

He also added, the weather channel is reporting global warming will reverse in a few yr.s and cooler temps will prevail, particularly in N. Florida.

Additionally, it was announced that the Concord will return and provide non-stop flights from ATL to Jax, fight time 18 minutes.

This has to help big time in our success against Florida

I do not believe that Georgia will play for a NC as long as the GA-FLA game is being played in Jacksonville. Under Richt, that game has been close and competitive every year, except for 2008, but I believe that if he’d had a home and away series with the Gators, his record would be 4-4, instead of 2-6, and it would be a real rivalry again.

The game should stay in Jax. The idea of playing instead in the Dome is stupid as hell. Talk about going from a one-of-a-kind atmosphere to no atmosphere……and fewer seats. I am sorry, I only want to take MARTA to one game, the SECC. If it can’t stay in Jax, then go to home and home, but we forfeit one of the best weekends in college football.

It should remain in Jacksonville. It’s tradition. Also, myself and as many GA fans do; they make this game a mini vacation by staying on Jekyll or St. Simons Island. We have about 70 people in our group that goes down and rents three or four houses. Our group goes down on Thursday and leaves on Monday. We play some golf and party. This decision says 3 things to me:

1) Tradition comes before winning.
2) Keeping South Georgia Boosters comes before winning.
3) Money comes before winning.

Which all adds up to a bunch of losses vs. Florida. The argument that “Well, we used to win a lot in J-ville in the past” doesn’t hold weight to me because Florida stunk back then, and we were almost always the overwhelming favorite. Home field in Vegas is worth 3 points, and back then we were able to overcome that handicap. Now that UF has caught up (since Spurrier) to, or even surpassed our program, we will win about 20% of the games there going forwards as opposed to 50%.

The game should be played in Jacksonville every year. Period. Tradition. UGA never had a problem winning there from 1933 to 1989. The location is not the reason for our poor performance since 1990. Fans who are honest with themselves know that.

And let’s face it, Spurrier elevated Florida to a place they had not been before, and Urban is continuing that. Almost no chance that they will go back to their pre-Spurrier mediocrity. Our talent is as good as theirs, give or take, so there is no reason for us to not beat them more often but let’s not think that we will get back to beating them 8 out of every 10 times we play. If we can beat them 50% of the time over the next 10 years that would be pretty good. However, I say again, the location of the game is not the problem.

I think it is a great idea for this game to remain in Jacksonville. In my view, many of the same people who advocated moving this game either Campus-Campus or alternating years to the Ga. Dome would not have had these views if Georgia was beating Florida regularly like they did from the mid 1970’s until just before the Spurrier era at Florida. At the end of the day, it is all about the product a team puts on the field, not where the game is played. Damon Evans made the right call on this one!

Its not really a “neutral site”. These big games were played in sites like this due to those stadiums being larger than the on-campus stadiums. Now that UGA holds 92,000+ and UF holds 90,000+ they dwarf the 76,000 of Jax stadium. All of the big rivalries are on campus now due to these expansions of college campus stadiums. Army/Navy and Texas/OU are the only notable exceptions.

You could insert Tom Brady in at QB for Detroit and his stats wouldn’t be a whole lot better. When the team around you is horrible it is tough to put up good numbers. Besides if the game were moved to the Ga. Dome every other year by the time all the sponsors (Coke, Budweiser, ect,) got their share of the tickets, both schools probably wouldn’t get but about 15,000 seats each. That’s what happens to the SEC championship game every year at the Dome.

it is a shame that we UGA loses money every other year by playing in jax. it means that we lose a home game every other year. it hurts the business in athens, it hurts the concessions which help fund the school. think about how much it would help hotels in athens and would keep the money local every other year. WE NEED TO PLAY THIS GAME IN A HOME AND HOME.

you can take it for what it is worth, but it will always be a home game for florida. it is only a 90 minute drive for them. they can sleep in their own dorm the night before which is something UGA can not do when it is in jax.

For a program and following that cherishes winning at all cost and that winning is everything, this decision is disappointingly contrary to that philosophy.

I want this program to have its best chance to win every game. We should admit we cannot beat UF in a road game consistently (and not even half the time) anymore. Home and home would give us every legitimate chance to win at least on an equal basis.

I am afraid we have handicapped our SEC and national championship chances again for a number of years.

They have already announced that UGA wil fly directly from Athens now, including this one.

Fl fans are going to be in Tampa, and Naples, and Miami, just like Dawgs fans are going to in Dalton.

I am certain that last year’s scheduling oddity did not figure into the discussion. UGA has the week off before and 3 home game in a row after the game this year. FL will on the road 4 out of 5 games including this one.

Doesn’t make a dime’s bit of difference where the game is played. As long as Urban is coaching FL and Richt is coaching GA, FL will continue to win at roughly a 3 out of 4 clip.

This series goes in cycles. Dooley owned us for approximately 20 years and Spurrier and Meyer have owned the Dawgs for about the same amount of time. Until the coaches change, FL will continue to dominate. They could play every game between the hedges–doesn’t matter.

It’s NOT a neutral site….it favors the better team.
It runs in cycles; up until the late 80’s the Gators were wanting it changed to a home and home.
The pendulum swings, and now the ‘dogs want it changed.
Bring a better team to the game and enjoy the better results.

I wish someone would beat the Gators. Fla needs the money that UGA students will spend on beer and driving tickets.

I don’t think it’s fair. The home game advantage is well documented and Georgia suffers from this disadvantage. Jacksonville’s proximity to Gainesville makes it a slam dunk home game every time. And as far as the TV lock goes, do you really think the GA-FL game, wherever they play, will not be televised? That just won’t happen. They should swap home games just like everybody else in the UNIVERSE!!!

AltamahaDawg, please explain how UGA will lose 1.2 million dollers by hosting the game in athens when the school does not make money already? the jax stadium is smaller and we get less tickets, plus we have to pay a portion of every ticket sold to the jax stadium. PLEASE EXPLAIN YOURSELF.

bottom line is season games should never be in alternate site. its the same with the oklahoma and texas game. that game should also be played on a home and home site.

and you can look it up. a couple years ago, after we beat florida, larry munson said after the game that UGA would have to transfer in atlanta before heading to athens and told the people who wanted to welcome UGA back that the team would not arrive back until 5am. go look that up. he did say it on radio. look it up in the georgia archieve if you do not believe me

I’m not surprised but I’m disappointed. Been attending UGA games for 13 years and still have never seen this game in person because it will take me another 20-30 years, maybe longer, before this game will be included in my season ticket package. The problem with “tradition” is that it excludes more than half the fan base every year.

Yeah, I know there’s always scalpers but how many people are really going to plan a major road trip with their family without knowing they’ve got tickets in hand?

Plus, I wonder if Richt really wants the game to stay there since it means we’ll continue to play fewer home games than just about any major team in the country.

CFB fanatic, please get your facts straight. If you will check the attendance each year at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, I believe you will see that it exceeds 85,000…………..not the 76,000 you claim.

The facts about the exact payouts are easily found. It’s late, I’m tired. Try the internet. As a matter of fact, I think the details were even in some article in the AJC just today. But it’s not even a disputed issue, the schools would lose money. In short half of slightly less every time is more than all of slightly more half the time.

One of the things I have always found funny about our agreement with the stadium is that we pay one dollar to rent the place for the game. Has to be some present considerations to make it a legal contract I guess.
And J-ville pays the total cost for all expenses to put on a game, an expence each school would suffer to stage thier own. J-ville also reimburses the travel expences, which each school would have to pay for each year.

They extended the runways at the Athens airport this past year. Flying direct now. Did not use to, will now. Larry wasn’t predicting the future. I don’t need to look it up.

BTW, “bottom line” is really a poor choice of words to qualify an opinion. That sort of defeats the purpose of calling something the “bottom line”.

And there isn’t a major program out there that would give up what UGA gets out of this game for one more home game every other year.

Every one is jealous of the Ga Fla game. It is fun and it is ours. Gatorzone, you are not so correct in your stats, but like they say “figures don’t lie, but liars can figure”. So we have a UGA guy starting at Detroit at QB, Rb at Denver, and 3 TE starting in the league, a number of lineman, in the pro bowl, and the best corner in the league. So we will see how young Matthew will do in the end. He did manage to beat the Mighty Gators while he was starting at UGA, and that is more than 95% of the teams that have played UF in the last 3 years have done.

As far as the game, it is great, I’ve been going for over 30 years, and I love to see the excitement around the game. The 70’s 80’s when we won everything, and now the last 2 decades the tables have turned. No doubt you guys have ruled the nest of late. The greatest games though have been those which had MNC implications. 1966 when we kept Spurrier from winning it as a QB, the 76 game when we got to play for the MNC, 68 when we got to play for the MNC, of course 8081 and 82, and 84 whe we kept UF from going undefeated, you guys were # 1 then, and of course 96 06 and 08.

Glad it is still in Jax, and hopefully, we can be competitive to you guys sometime in the future. We don’t even belong on the same field with you as best I can read what you say. Maybe we will get back up there some day. I guess we will have to wait and see.

Go dogs someday we will be as good as the Gators, until then, Go Dogs.

One last point for those who think tradition is just the “last bad habit” or whatever that idiotic saying is. The only people who truly believe this are the newcomers, because they have no frame of reference. To them I say that if you take away college football’s tradition you end up with have the Jacksonville Jaguars. Lots of bandwagon fans and TV watchers, and nobody cares much one way or the other.

If college football teams were w-hores, UGA would be the biggest one of all. And just how much revenue does this cost the state? But it is not the reason for UGA’s failures. It is because UF has better players and coaches. And its not the venue, Mr. King. Try Vandy-Ms.St. in Memphis.

Yay! I’m glad the game is staying in J’ville. It’s a great tradition and a great road trip every year. Please don’t ever suggest that it should be played in that awful Ga Dome. I hate domed stadiums! Can someone please tell me why a sunbelt city needs a domed stadium? When they firt proposed building that monstrosity, I said, “NOOOOOOOOOOO”!!!!!!! Please never ever put the Dawgs in that God awful place, (unless it’s for the SEC Championship game, then I’m cool with it).

Enter your comments here Was there a deal already in place?
I don’t remember hearing or reading about what advantage (financially)
this would give Georgia Football.
There is something smelley in the barn if we think there is no deal on the table.
I’ve been to Jacksonville over thirty years and there is nothing special about the place.
We should alternate between the GA Dome and Jacksonville.
That’s a good economic plan. Shipping all of our dollars to Florida for that week end does not.

mark, you were talking about the University, not the city of Athens, but since you did ask: I dont want to get all invoved in the whole room count/ proximity to drive home situation. But folks are not going to start filling up Athens hotels on Tuesday of that week. You are comparing apples to oranges. Whatever the City of Athens would gain is offset by losses in other Georgia towns.

I do not know everything about this, but this stuff is just simple facts, not hard to find, and should be anyway, easy to comprehend.

I pretty damn sure that somewhere in that meeting was a folder with some numbers in it.

Absolutely the right decision! An annual trek to Jacksonville is a mid-season bowl game and one of the classics in college football. The crowd is always 50-50, the atmosphere cannot be matched in Athens or Gainesville. Let’s just back to the Dooley era of kicking butt!!

can an intelligent Georgia Bulldog fan please provide me even just one advantage that the UF football team has over the Georgia football team by the game being played in Jax. i keep hearing this but it is never backed up with anything that can be substantiated.

I am sure that the Chamber of Commerce and all the Hotel and Restaurant owners in Athens, Ga. really appreciate the Ga.-Fl. game being held in Jacksonville for another six years. With the State of Georgia needing all the tax revenue it can get these days, this was not the smartest move for economic reasons alone. The State of Florida definitely benefits more from the tax revenue collections by keeping this game in Jacksonville, Fl. A lot more fans stay at Amelia Island, Fernidina Beach, and the metro area of Jacksonville than they do at Jekyl Island or St. Simons. And … it has not helped us much at all in the last 20 years with recruiting in that area of Florida. Sorry, but the game should go home and home. The University of Georgia and the University of Florida have nice stadiums that hold more fans than the Jaguar stadium in Jacksonville.

Money wins again!!! Why not play a round robin schedule. Jax., Athens, Gainesville, Ga. Dome and then start with Jax. again. Ga. will never have the success on the national scene as long as they play in Jax. every year. Fla. wins again!
