Jacksonville is right place for Dogs-Gators

ga flaJust about everyone in the Bulldog Nation has an opinion on keeping the Georgia-Florida game in Jacksonville and those opinions have been aired here many times. But since the UGA Athletics Board has decided that the game should stay there, at least for another six years, I figured some of you might want to vent one way or the other on the subject.

As far as I’m concerned, they made the right decision if you want Georgia-Florida to remain one of college football’s marquee games, like Oklahoma-Texas. As I’ve written before, it’s the 50/50 split and cocktail party atmosphere that elevate this match-up above just another important game in the SEC East.

You can make a convincing case for playing the game in Athens and Gainesville or at least alternating home-and-home with Jacksonville, but in the end that would take away from what makes Georgia-Florida special and a lock every year for a national TV slot.

That’s my take. So now that they’ve made it official it will stay in Jacksonville, feel free to share your thoughts.

Best idea is to stay in Jax. 42,000 seats every year compared to 5,000 in Gainesville every other year is a no brainer. The very idea of playing any game in the Dome, 1 hour from our home stadium, is stupid. If playing in ATL is a huge recruiting advantage for Saban why is playing in Jax. not a recruiting advantage for UGA in Florida? Alabama and Florida can’t sign every prospect in ATL and Florida.

The game belongs in Jacksonville. The week off before the game is CRITICAL. Got the week off this year. Watch out Tebow.

I wish FSU vs. Clemson would move their game to the Georgia Dome every year and try and duplicate the GA vs. Florida game. Not as much history, but it would be fun.

Yes, D. Evans just recommended it stay for another 6.

He also added, the weather channel is reporting global warming will reverse in a few yr.s and cooler temps will prevail, particularly in N. Florida.

Additionally, it was announced that the Concord will return and provide non-stop flights from ATL to Jax, fight time 18 minutes.

This has to help big time in our success against Florida

I do not believe that Georgia will play for a NC as long as the GA-FLA game is being played in Jacksonville. Under Richt, that game has been close and competitive every year, except for 2008, but I believe that if he’d had a home and away series with the Gators, his record would be 4-4, instead of 2-6, and it would be a real rivalry again.

Until UGA beats Tennessee, Auburn, and Florida in the same years you can forget about a national championship. Each year 2 of those games will not be at home.

Bill, if you wanna get drunk and party in jax as the excuse fine, but dont say that TV is a reason for it being there…I think The TV would show up if it were played on campus. DUUUUUHHH!!!! that might be the stupidest thing I have ever seen you write.

Its not going to matter where they play this year, Florida is just too good. The defense alone is going to get them to the SEC title game and probably the National Championship.

The game should stay in Jax. The idea of playing instead in the Dome is stupid as hell. Talk about going from a one-of-a-kind atmosphere to no atmosphere……and fewer seats. I am sorry, I only want to take MARTA to one game, the SECC. If it can’t stay in Jax, then go to home and home, but we forfeit one of the best weekends in college football.

Some of you say you dont want the filthy gators on the UGA campus….have you thought about SC and TN being there every other year? Lets play TN in nashville, and SC in Charlotte if that is your argument….

Hey, now that you mention it, Georgia vs Florida in JAX makes as much sense as TN vs FLA in NASHVILLE!!!

I’d like to see every other game come to the GA Dome. Gawd knows I’ve wasted enough gas and money going to Jacksonville for the last 20 years. Of course, I don’t think the JAX location affects the outcome very much. So give me two years of beating the Gators in a row and I’ll go ANYWHERE to see that!

Keep doing what you’re doing and keep getting what you are getting. Something needs to change and I was hoping going home and home would help. This is disappointing. I love it when we win down there. Being on I-95 heading North back into Georgia honking @ all the Georgia Fans like we did in 2004 & 2007 are great memories but they have too few and far between. I hope I am wrong but right now I am disappointed.

It should remain in Jacksonville. It’s tradition. Also, myself and as many GA fans do; they make this game a mini vacation by staying on Jekyll or St. Simons Island. We have about 70 people in our group that goes down and rents three or four houses. Our group goes down on Thursday and leaves on Monday. We play some golf and party. It’s a great time and it’s what makes this the greatest college football game experience. Go Dawgs!!!!

I think we should agree to play in Gainesville every year. Florida must laugh at our foolishness. Would they agree to play in Atlanta every year? F… no, it is two hours from Athens.

This whole issue is being driven by about a half dozen large UGA donors who live on the coast.

Five worst passer ratings in the NFL:

Matthew Stafford, Lions, 40.5
Jake Delhomme, Panthers, 45.3
JaMarcus Russell, Raiders, 46.6
Matt Cassel, Chiefs, 66.3
Brady Quinn, Browns, 66.9

guess we don't care about winning

September 23rd, 2009

This decision says 3 things to me:

1) Tradition comes before winning.
2) Keeping South Georgia Boosters comes before winning.
3) Money comes before winning.

Which all adds up to a bunch of losses vs. Florida. The argument that “Well, we used to win a lot in J-ville in the past” doesn’t hold weight to me because Florida stunk back then, and we were almost always the overwhelming favorite. Home field in Vegas is worth 3 points, and back then we were able to overcome that handicap. Now that UF has caught up (since Spurrier) to, or even surpassed our program, we will win about 20% of the games there going forwards as opposed to 50%.

Gatorzone – You must be posting this because you are scared this year. You are just posting stats on our weakness for the past three years. “He should have stayed at UGA one more year!” – Yeah, you wish…then you would feel confident about a gator win, but now you are nervous huh?

Tradition is only the last bad habit.
This game is no less meaningful and attractive to TV networks in Athens or Gainesville as it is in Jacksonville. Period. Let’s stop catering to a few fans and look at all of the UGA Nation and begin going home-and-home. No Atlanta. Just Gainesville and Athens. It will be a bloodbath, and the fans and networks will love it. Oops, except those guys in S. GA.

Dawgstephen:
Yeah, the game would be on TV no matter where it was played. But it wouldn’t necessarily be a national feed as it is every year on CBS and it wouldn’t be as big a deal.

Thanks, though, for not including a plug for your blog with the insult. Tell me, on your “moderated” site, do you insult your commenters without knowing the first thing about them, like you do with me here?

No one was whining about JAX when the Dawgs were whipping UF from 1933-1991. It’s the best football weekend trip you can have and JAX has the damnedest Bulldog Club you’ve ever seen. Pull it out of JAX, that’s fine. But what will the excuse be when UGA doesn’t beat UF in Athens or the ATL? It all starts on the field.

If jacksonville gets to keep the game, can they at least get a few good restaurants and clubs near the beach for dawg fans to eat and party at on Thursday and Friday before the game? The selection now is terrible—the food choices are very limited, with seafood that wouldn’t pass as average up the coast.

The game should be played in Jacksonville every year. Period. Tradition. UGA never had a problem winning there from 1933 to 1989. The location is not the reason for our poor performance since 1990. Fans who are honest with themselves know that.

Speed Racer

And let’s face it, Spurrier elevated Florida to a place they had not been before, and Urban is continuing that. Almost no chance that they will go back to their pre-Spurrier mediocrity. Our talent is as good as theirs, give or take, so there is no reason for us to not beat them more often but let’s not think that we will get back to beating them 8 out of every 10 times we play. If we can beat them 50% of the time over the next 10 years that would be pretty good. However, I say again, the location of the game is not the problem.

I guess Mark Richt had no say so in the matter.

Now us Gators have to hear six more years of his whining about how UF has an advantage. The problem is…….he could never come up with what the advantage is by playing the game in Jax.

Kudos to the south Georgia dog fans that pulled this off with their power and clout.

I think it is a great idea for this game to remain in Jacksonville. In my view, many of the same people who advocated moving this game either Campus-Campus or alternating years to the Ga. Dome would not have had these views if Georgia was beating Florida regularly like they did from the mid 1970’s until just before the Spurrier era at Florida. At the end of the day, it is all about the product a team puts on the field, not where the game is played. Damon Evans made the right call on this one!
