Logan Gray: UGA’s missing quarterback

Logan Gray (Georgiadogs.com)

Logan Gray (Georgiadogs.com)

I’ll be off on Tuesday, but I wanted to leave you with something to chew over until the Blawg returns on Wednesday.

And that subject is Georgia’s alleged backup quarterback, Logan Gray, aka the Invisible Man.

Well, not entirely invisible. Gray did get in the game behind center for one play Saturday night to hand off the ball. And he again played Mr. Fair Catch on the punt receiving team.

But while Mike Bobo had indicated we’d see the special package of plays drawn up for Gray when Georgia got into the red zone, that wasn’t the case. Gray didn’t play at all in the red zone Saturday.

This bothers a lot of fans, including my brother Tim, not because they’re not fans of Joe Cox, but because they think the Dogs badly need to get some meaningful game experience for Cox’s backup.

Let’s face it, Cox likely would be making much better decisions on the field if he’d gotten more than the very occasional bit of mop-up work behind Matthew Stafford. If Cox goes down, Georgia winds up with a quarterback who spent last year mostly on special teams and thus is only a hair more experienced than a true freshman.

And then there’s the long view. Cox will be gone after this year. Do we really want to enter next season with a bunch of inexperienced QBs battling for the job? Been there, done that, and it wasn’t fun.

The puzzle is why we’re not seeing Gray. If the coaches don’t have confidence in him, maybe he shouldn’t be No. 2 on the depth chart. If they do have confidence in him, they need to let him know by putting him in the game. If the knock on Gray is his inexperience, then isn’t the answer to let him play?

And the argument that you shouldn’t put your backup in during a close game doesn’t fly, either. Looking at the games ahead, only Tennessee Tech and possibly Vandy and Kentucky would be safe for Gray to get any game reps. And if you wait until the game is on ice to put him in, that’s not really meaningful experience.

I know the argument goes that inserting a backup disrupts the rhythm of the starter. That’s what folks used to say when D.J. Shockley would get his scripted downs in relief of starter David Greene. And there was some truth to that. But at least he got the experience. And it served Georgia well when Shockley became the starter in 2005.

So what do you think? Should Gray be inserted into every game, no matter what’s happening? If he’s not ready to lead the Dogs, should Georgia bite the bullet and make Aaron Murray the No. 2 QB? Or should the Dogs stick with playing Cox whenever the game is still up for grabs and not worry about playing time for his backup?

I have to think that our coaches just really must have that much confidence in Gray. If he wasn’t put in during the OK State game when we couldn’t get ANYTHING going and our QB was obviously not feeling well, then I don’t really expect to see him much this year. I do have to agree with some that it messes up the QB’s rhythm. Cox was really in the flow of things this week and I don’t think I would have wanted anything to interrupt that. It was fine for Shockley when David Greene was a senior with a ton of game experience under his belt, but not for a 5th year senior who’s had 3 total starts.

2nd game of the season. The Dawg fans rushing Logan Gray onto the seen need to calm down. Let the season play out and he will get “MEANINGFUL” snaps.

IMO Gray will not even be the starter next season. If the coaching staff thought so much of him and so little of Murray why would they risk an injury to him by allowing him to attempt to return punts?

Something NO one talks about: UGA will always be a good to very good program with Mark Richt. They will NEVER be a great program. As far as Gray goes, Richt and Bobo are operating from the position of fear. They are much too conservative to try the kid Gray. Personally, how would we be worse for Gray playing? He has blazing speed. His passes have lots of zip, and his net playing time is the same as Cox, not counting OK State and SC last week. I like Joe Cox a lot, but he cannot stretch the field, he cannot escape the pocket and create on his own; partly because he lacks the physical skills, and also he’s coached to “manage”, not lose the game for us. Richt himself is much too soft and mild mannered to get and keep this team fired up and motivated. He did it in the Florida game three seasons past and spent the next month apologizing for it. We are the UGA Dogs; we don’t apologize for beating the snot out of someone; we just get ready to do the same thing next week. Coach Richt is too soft, and too much of an apologist to be and do otherwise. So we ask ourselves: do we want to be consistently good to very good, or do we want to be great?

Bill – It’s not that I disagree with your argument – I do think we need to get Gray some snaps. However, your logic is what I disagree with. I would say that Shockley was a very good quarterback; that’s why he performed so well in 2005…not because he got the occasional reps behind Greene. Of course, those reps didn’t hurt, but the biggest reason why he was successful was because he was very talented.

Perhaps Richt didn’t want to insert Gray too much because he wanted to look out for Cox’s psyche; many fans were clamoring for Gray all week, so if Richt puts him in then Cox starts looking over his shoulder more than he should. I don’t know. That’s just a thought…one would also argue that if that’s the case, then Cox is too thin-skinned to be a big-time QB. But again, I’m just throwing that out there.

I saw Gray play in HS and he is not the answer folks. It looks to me like CMR is trying to gamble and red-shirt Murray this season. I agree with previous posters and your brother Tim that we need to work Murray in this season. While Gray might be an upgrade over Cox I don’t see him starting next season once Murray gets on the field. We saw what happened when CMR red shirted Moreno. I can see red shirting some of the linemen and such to make them stronger for SEC, but really think UGA is shooting itself in the foot on red shirting skill players. AJ will be gone in 3 years as will Smith if he continues to develop. Please make Murray number 2 now .

He didn’t exactly look thrilled about being in the game with SC and handed it off when he should have run. I like the guy. I hope he breaks one. I hope there is some stellar alternative stray dog “O,” and Gray becomes a huge success. I think Richt made the right choice in giving Cox his chance – certainly the kid paid his dues and has the respect of his teammates. Unfortnately I think Joe’s skills may not be SEC caliber . He is short and gets too many passes batted down ; he is not quick enough to avoid a decent pass rush; and his arm strength is just average and wont be the difference in any crucial games. Richt & Bobo face a difficult choice – insert Gray into the equation freely, or stick with the team leader whom everyone respects. If this were Saban or Meyer- what choice would they make ???

Put your best players on the field and let them play. damn the seniority, if a freshman/sophmore gives us the best chance to win over a 5th year senior, then put his butt out there and let him play.

Quick clarification for whoever asked – this week ESPN, next week ESPNU.

There was no reason to put Logan Gray in at QB during this game because aside from a couple of plays, Joe Cox was playing very well. What absolutely had us scratching our heads in the stands was that we saw Gray in on at least two occasions in kick off coverage. What coach in his right mind puts in your #2 quarterback on the special team that is most vulnerable to injury multiple times when your starter has taken a couple of big hits and has already had to come out for a play because of one of those hits? Shockingly stupid. I really like our coaches and some of what they did worked well, but mainly I’m thankful that we had enough talent on the field that wanted to win badly enough to overcome some of the putrid schemes we had on both sides of the ball. I would almost be willing to bet that after we forced 2 touchbacks on kick offs, Coach Fab told Walsh he’d bench him if he kept kicking deep in the endzone. I’m behind this team no matter what as always, but they need some fresh blood on the coaching staff at the coordinator level.

Bill – Bad idea.

Was it in 2002 that DJ threw a pick 6 against Florida – proving to be the difference in the game – and leaving UGA 13-1 – and not a chance to play for a National Title?

Game experience is good – but not when the game is still in question.

Imagine if Gray threw an interception for TD – fumbled ,etc while the starter was out and UGA lost to SC. You would be the very one complaining about having the backup in while the game was in doubt.

Let the back-up get experience in practice and during blowouts – not in the heat of the battle against a South Carolina – when every snap is meangingful.

Bobo needs to concentrate on having a real offense, not a flag football offense.

Samuel is running over people, yet he is taken out and forgotten. Wouldn’t it had been nice for our offense to actually stay on the field and give our defense a rest.

Good, but never great the UGA football program will be. I’m a two-time UGA graduate, 76 and 78, and our program has never been consistently great. We won in 1980 and had three outstanding years, but since 34 left, we’ve been….just good. We harp about good ol’ Vince. Good ol’ Vince averaged 7.2 wins during his time as head coach. Don’t even start about Ray Goff, and Jim Donnan was over his head. Coach Richt has certainly elevated the organization, but certainly not to the consistently high level of some other teams; that team from Gainesville, and before the recent slide; Florida State. FSU finished in the top five for nine consecutive years. That folks, is greatness in an organization.

USC coach Pett Carroll started his red shirt freshman(Matt Barkley) because he believe Matt is their future and will be well prepared next season….same thing can be said about Clemson’s red shirt freshman Kyle Parker.

Aaron Murray is a passing machine. He’s capable of taking this team to a NC and winning the heisman if clueless Richt ever realize that he is sitting on a gold mine.

Bill,

Agree with your comments and your logic. I think Joe C. has given us what we thought he would to this point. I thought he threw the ball well against SC, the one pick 6 was a terrible mistake that we don’t want to see very often, but the whole team made potential game losing mistakes.

I’d like to see Joe C hand the ball off and toss sweep it to the running backs a whole lot more. We need to run the ball and I think Logan can hand the ball to the running backs as well as anyone, it isn’t that risky to put him in if he we run the ball 80% of the time when he is in. (it isn’t like we are playing mistake free turnover free ball with him on the sidelines now!)

We ran only 2 plays from scrimmage at the 5 minute mark in the 1st quarter and that hurt Logan’s chances of getting in. Cox was on the sidelines most of the first half, so any thoughts of bringing in Logan much were nixed.

I’d like to see Logan get either a full series in the 2nd quarter if we have 25 yard line or better field position (will Brandon Smith run the ball out from the back of the endzone for a fourth time?)or in a red zone package inside the 15 in the first half at Arkansas.

I’d also like to see our LB’s and DB’s use their 4 and 5 star talent and get a little closer to the opposing teams receivers and take our chances with getting beat deep. Not EVERY play, but much more often than we are doing now. The D will won’t be so tired and we will get off the field more. Holding a team to some field goals is nice, but not if they march up and down the field all day. South Carolina is not a good team offensively, but we made them look that way. NC State wasn’t that scared to get beat deep by them.

Some have commented that we are a “young team”. We AREN’T YOUNG. We have upperclassman at most spots on defense to start and many in backup rolls on the defense. On offense, we have an experienced line, a 5th year senior at QB, we are a little young at WR and RB, but every team is young at some spots. How many true freshman are we starting? I can’t think of any (Brandon Smith and Orson Charles are playing alot, but that doesn’t make us a young team).

I don’t know what everyone’s complaining about: Joe had a very good game. Yeah, he threw a pick-6, but how many of those did Stafford throw? Exactly. Joe’s going a very good job managing our offense and spreading the ball around. He keeps the starter job. ‘Nuff said.

About Logan, I like him and know he’s got talent. I just don’t know if he’s going to be THE guy should Cox go down. I honestly think Murray’s the better bet. He’s strong, accurate and has that IT factor that I don’t think Logan has. Don’t get me wrong, we’ll do well if Logan goes in, but I think we’ll be GREAT if Murray gets in.

*Note: I know the “it factor” is a rather nebulous quality to base a QB’s potential on, but that’s how I see it.*

Why does everyone get so caught up with the passing game? IMO, that’s why we struggle so often and are inconsistent, we’ve got a big O’line, a powerful back, but we’re not utilizing it properly, that’s Bobo’s fault, just my opinion.

I believe in playing to your strengths, we’ve got a 5th year senior, he has the confidence of the coaches and more importantly his teamates. It’s up to the coaches, Bobo and Richt to put him in a system that he can be successful in.

Call it Monday morning QB’ing but if we simplify things a bit, run more effectively, we don’t lose to OSU. Terrible offensive game plan and execution/play calling in that game by Bobo. Beating a dead horse but we didn’t establish anything that game, we looked helter skelter.

I believe this is a Joe T. situation, Gray knows the playbook better than the freshmen, but the coaches don’t have confidence in his ability to play SEC caliber football. I ask the question, would you rather win, or look flashy? Again, we’ve got a 5th year senior that can get the job done. He’s got plenty of weapons. We need a coach that can recognize all the key ingredients and create a recipe for success. That would be Bobo, he needs to develop a game plan and give it a chance to succeed.

A calculated and successful offense would also keep Willie’s D off the field so much. They played way to much Saturday night.

The argument of “disrupting rhythm” doesn’t hold water. Everytime the “rhythm” gets going, Mr BOOBO changes things (like goes to passing when the running is on fire) and screws up the rhythm.

The QB isn’t going to be Gray unless Cox gets hurt so you may as well accept it and move on. The exception to this will be in the FL game when we are are 21 points behind then CMR might, MIGHT, put ginger on the bench.

Did anyone else notice that Murray did almost no throwing in the pregame? Mettenberger was the third guy saturday in warmups. I know getting more than three QB’s enough reps in a pregame would be hard but you’d think the #3’s would alternate or something.

The answer is right in front of our eyes. The staff does not have confidence that Gray can get it done as a full time QB.If you notice everybody talks about Gray’s run ability yet the two most important people on the staff Richt and Bobo always say stuff like “He needs to show that he can run the team”.I agree that if he was truly the no.2 there is now way he would be returning punts.I say Cox will start until we are eliminated from contention for SEC championship. Then the mood shifts to preparing for next year…at that point Gray will get a shot to prove he can be our starter. You got to realize that we have TWO top 10 rated freshman QB’s on the roster…the longer the season goes on the less likely it is that Gray is a serious player at QB.Talk about a spring game all you want…C.Thomas and Washington looked outstanding in the spring game didn’t they?Thats why you cant put a whole lot of stock in spring games!!

You know the coaches watch and evaluate these kids every day at practice.
They will start the guy that gets the job done.
Their (the coaches) job at UGA is dependent on how these kids perform.
They will play the guys that do the best.
It’s that simple.

So know that the program is in good hands and the guys that are starting for the Dawgs are playing because they earned it.

Bill
I agree with you. Logan needs to be playing every game. He played great during the spring game and brings a different look for defenses. What happens if Cox’s arm deteriorates and Gray has to take over..He can help now and will be that better next year.

An earlier article proclaimed that the USC NCState set college offense back 20 years. How far did the UGA USC set back college defense?

Wow now we are going to complain that someone didn’t play when the other guy was playing well. On the play which Logan QB’d did he have an option, or was it a pure handoff. My guess is that we will see him more and more and we will see a different game indeed when he is in there. I’d look for him this weekend in some option type of plays. It’s time to see it.

Cats fly, not very far. It was just a big offense week in the state of Ga. Tech, Falcons, UGA all had alot of O.

There is this eight grader in Dacula that can throw a football through a tire swing, moving I might add, at thirty yards. Should we give him a scholly?

Catsfly, not far. About as far as a cat can fly if you throw them off a twenty foot roof. All in the trajectory.

Johnny, we have a few folks in here with a huge man-crush on head coaches from other programs, and quite the expert on what they think and what they would do….just in case you need to test that theory.

Alt, my favorite is “If Mark Richt is fired, who would you like to see as Head Coach and why the hell would they come here”. If Bradley won’t write it, I will. Bill, you can take a swing at it also. Just send the check.

Only if the tire is spinning like a top as well as moving side to side.
With a blind fold on.
Expectations at UGA are extremely high.
So it seems…………..

Put down that backbeat and crank up the Georgia Rhythm.
Give it everything we got just one more time.

Gee, did Munson write the lyrics for ARS in the seventies?

I saw Gray playing over half the game Altamaha. He has the new Nintendo DSI and he was kicking major butt on NCAA 2010. He threw for 500 yards and scored four running touchdowns against Ohio State. But who couldn’t.

I know alot of you hate Tech unceasingly. And with Tech fans like m, Saint Simmons and the jerkwad to be mentioned later, I can understand. But I want to remind you that Thursday night, our other major instate school will be playing a team that knows no bounds in narcissism. So full of their own hubris, they call themselves the “U”. I ask you to put aside your personal animosity’s and pull for the Bugs to humble, nay destroy, the detestable Hurricanes. If you won’t do it for yourself, do it for the Weather Channel. They hate Hurricanes also.

I sure wish we had Tony at the helm of UGA instead of that idiot Mark Richt. Tony has been saying “FROM DAY ONE” people – that Aaron Murray is the best QB – DAY ONE! Richt is obviously just clueless – he’s only 84-23 in 8 plus years, with 2 SEC championships, 6 top 10 finishes, and a 6-2 bowl record. Man – I sure hope we can find a way to hire Tony over that bum we have running the program.

I have one question. One moron said Logan will get more snaps in the games that are not so close. What game will that be? When they are behind by 40 to Florida. I do not see the easy game on the schedule, do you?

Great topic Bill, only thing that bothers me is as you mentioned, Gray would see some red zone action. Also Coach Ball said Marlon Brown would be in the game against South Carolina if he had a good practice during the week.. I did not see him. Did he play? I might have missed it. My point is, I seeing this could be an issue to recruiting if the coaches are not living up to there word. If they don’t mean it then they should’nt say it…
