Show us your fandom! (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

The week after a big loss often raises the question of just what constitutes a true Georgia Bulldogs fan.

How about those folks who throw up their hands in despair and lament, “There goes the season”? Or the Dog supporters who greet each loss with a demand for someone to be fired? Are they true fans or are they “bandwagon” fans as they’re labeled by the vocal contingent that believes you can’t be a fan unless you say nothing but positive things about your team?

Can you be a true fan of the Dogs if you didn’t go to UGA? What if you haven’t been to or listened to a game in years but you still smile when you see a headline telling you Georgia has won? Are you a fan?

Who are the true fans?

In my view, the answer is all of the above.

Whether you spend thousands of dollars on seats in Sanford Stadium, follow the Dogs on the road, wear a UGA cap every day or just quietly root for the Georgia team, you’re a fan. Anyone who wants the Dogs to do well qualifies.

Where all this is leading is the Junkyard Blawg Fan of the Week contest. We’ll have weekly contests in which the winner gets two tickets to the next home game and their picture up on the big video screen in Sanford Stadium and then a grand prize winner who’ll get to attend the final home game of the season with me in one of the sky suites (which will certainly be a first for me).

So here’s a chance to show everyone you have the coolest Bulldog wheels. Whether you’re a fire-Martinez fan or you view the world through red-and-black-colored glasses, this contest is for you. And whether you enter or not, be sure to come back later in the week and vote on which one of the finalists you think is the best.

SUBMIT YOUR PHOTOS

To submit your photos, go here. Deadline for getting your photo in for the first week’s contest is midnight on Thursday, Sept. 17.

Contestants must submit via e-mail a photograph that fits the theme of the week.

The first week’s theme is “Bulldogs on Wheels,” which means we want pictures of your UGA-themed vehicle.

Bill,

I couldn’t agree with you more on being a fan. I was raised a Bulldog fan but never went to UGA. I instead went to a smaller college and made the military my career. That however never stopped my fanaticism for UGA. Why others think you have to be an alumnus of a college to be a fan is beyond me.

Saint Simons You are no different that the guy driving down the interstate and blowing the horn while driving 85 mph. You’re 10 foot tall and bulletproof while the keyboard is at your fingertips. Just like the guy blowing the horn while driving in the opposite direction. If you have a valid opinion, then opine. If you can only repeat scores, dig a little deeper in that shallow thought process you firmly possess and bring something worthy. If not, get off the boards. Your 3rd grade comments are weak.

I didn’t go to college anywhere but I have been a UGA fan from childhood. I remember the glory days as a child of Hershel, Belue and Scott. UGA has been in my heart ever since. I have always pulled for my home teams, but I have always felt something special for the Dawgs. I spend money on UGA apparel, tickets and car flags etc. I proudly bare a large G sticker on the rear window of my truck. I never miss a game weather on tv radio or the rare occassion I do get some tickets. I get mad when we lose, that’s out of pride. I second guess the play calls and who’s on the field at times, that’s part of being a fan, we all do it at some point. I know I dont know better than the coaching staff but fans will always do that. I guess it’s our way of venting when we are caught up in the emotion of the game. I sometimes get ridiculed from co-workers that when things go bad when I still wear my UGA apparel to show my support. If all this doesn’t qualify me as a fan then what does?

Curious what UGA fans really think of their own fan base. I love the UGA players, but I think UGA fans are among the worst of college and pro sports. Yes there are good guys too, but here’s why I think this in general…

After one game, I hear nothing but Joe Cox sucks from every fan I talk to. The blogs ripped him left and right. Funny, but I have heard this before. Joe T comes to mind. Remember when he got hurt to bring Stafford in? People cheered when Joe got hurt. That is absolute trash.

Every game Georgia loses I hear nothing but excuses. Heck, no UGA fan I know gave credit to Georgia Tech last year. Tech had a great season, and UGA fans made nothing but excuses.

UGA fans have never said a word about players’ problems off the field. When players got arrested every year, it was no big deal… especially if it wasn’t a starter. UGA led the country in arrests last year… AGAIN.

I went to the last falcons preseason game, and some drunk guys in the stands had to be asked repeatedly to leave some players wives alone. They were cursing loud with kids sitting in the seats behind them. When they got up to go get more beer, their red shirts didn’t have Falcons’ logos on them. All UGA shirts. What a disgrace.

Too many bad apples in the UGA fan section… sometimes it can make people root against the team they love. Clean it up UGA fans. How about acting a little classier this year. It will benefit the team.

Clemson is high school level? They have a heisman candidate rb, a great qb, and they have two defensive ends that are in the top 7 in the country. What high school did you go to? Did you even graduate with that kind analytical skills?

Quit making excuses. Just win, and UGA and Tech will settle it on the field in November. I bet you think last year’s game doesn’t count or something. It is what it is.

I’m sorry, meant to say a Top 50 team….when Tech beats a Top 50 team, then we can talk….hahahaha

What's the good word?

September 12th, 2009
1:44 pm

Saint Simons wasn’t talking after Thursday night…

4 completions and 3 interceptions…my, oh, my. A flexbone option quarterback should have an 80% completion rate with few interceptions, because the pass is supposed to be a danged surprise. Didn’t see much out of Mr. Heisman, either.

Just saying, to all the ugly Tech fans that cherish the opportunity to talk trash after a Georgia loss, all glory is fleeting. Last season might be a dream and this season could be the nightmare if your line doesn’t start hitting their blocks. I’m not talking to all Tech fans, just St. Simons and the like who do too much talking on our blog here.

Nice win, Jackets, but it was dang near a bad loss. If things don’t get better, we could be looking at another matchup like the mid 90s…6-5 vs 6-5 come November. We both have lots of room for improvement…

What's the good word?

September 12th, 2009
1:48 pm

And David, there’s plenty of disgraceful Tech fans, too. Sadly, there are a lot more of them after last season…if we could burn the bandwagons once everyone jumps on, we’d both have better fan bases.

It is what it is.

What the blind homer, red-and-black glasses fans don’t understand is that those of us who are REALISTS want to win as badly, if not more so, than they do.

Most of us didn’t come to our current beliefs about this program after Richt’s first loss, or even his 1-2 record against the Zooker, or after the WVU loss, or whatever.

We take the LONG view of the program. We see what’s happened in the past, what’s happening now, and what will happen in the future based on current trends.

And this is how we see it.

Mark Richt came here young and fired up with an outstanding defensive coordinator, the best recruiter in the SEC, and a great offensive play caller who wasn’t afraid to take all kinds of high reward risks (himself)

The first thing that changed was his playcalling. As a head coach, he was far more conservative and called more of his plays “not to lose,” as opposed to playing to win and always trying to score. With a lead, he let his foot off the gas, sometimes letting teams come back.

Then, after four great years of success this program hasn’t seen since the 1980s (two East titles, one SEC title), his outstanding DC (BVG) left, and Richt replaced him with his best friend and former college roommate. Richt’s first big mistake.

The Dawgs won the 2005 SEC Championship, but there was noticeable differences in the defenses. Straight-up defensive collapses, to be exact, that when combined with Richt’s now frustrating, “play not to lose” playcalling, began to become distressing. I’m talking about Auburn and WVU.

2006 saw another example of Richt’s weaknesses. Refusing to provide for the future by naming Stafford the starter, instead going with his personal favorite, a 5th year legacy who “earned his way” simply by sitting behind two far better QBs but yet couldn’t decisively beat out a TRUE FRESHMAN.

2007 saw Richt fully hand over his playcalling to Bobo, but Bobo has proven to be a wildly inconsistent playcaller, falling in love with certain plays that hardly ever work, refusing to stick with what works because, I don’t know, maybe he gets bored with it? Also, Richt’s refusal to start the most talented players comes back to haunt him again when Knowshon Moreno, the most talented player this team has seen since Champ and the most talented tailback since Hearst, is forced to share carries with the good, but not great Thomas Brown. This directly leads to the loss to SoCarolina, who cannot contain Moreno, but regularly stuff Brown. Unfortunately, Brown receives the lion’s share of the carries that say. Win the SoCarolina game, and the Dawgs are beating down OSU for the MNC, not LSU.

2008 is the most egregious example of Richt’s favoritism and putting his personal feelings above the good of the team. Willie Martinez, who by the end of the season, has presided over a defense that has gotten WORSE every year, has also set some dubious Georgia records (most games in a season giving up 40 points or more, most games over a four year period giving up 30 or more points per game), and yet, Richt REFUSES to fire Martinez. In fact, Richt rewards Martinez’s inept handling of his defense with a RAISE, when NO ONE wanted Martinez.

In 2009, Richt’s penchant for going with the “loyal” but less-talented 5th year senior over preparing for the future rears it’s ugly head once again in giving the bum-shoulder, dead-armed Joe Cox the starting job after the bowl game to avoid the chance that Logan Gray or Aaron Murray play Cox to a tie or beat him out, as Stafford did JoeTIII. Instead, we’re fed lies, such as Cox will guide this team with a steady hand and an arm strong enough to make all the plays. All the time, Richt KNOWS that Cox has a dead arm.

Why would Richt willingly put a lame-armed Cox out on the field? Why would he damage Georgia’s chances for next year by playing a QB who doesn’t have the talent to lead this team to more than a 8-4 or 7-5 season, instead of playing one of the two guys behind him who could do the same thing, yet prepare themselves for a great 2010?

The fact is, those of us who are REALISTS see Mark Richt and his staff resting on the very small amount of laurels they’ve earned, instead of pushing every year, every game, every play, to get better and better.

In this way, with Richt’s favoritism on his staff and on his roster, the Georgia Program has fallen behind the coaches who play no favorites and only care about winning. We’re talking Miles, Meyer, and Saban.

The thing is, when Bobby Bowden decided to rest on his laurels and keep his unqualified son as his OC, he had two MNCs to rest on.

Two SEC titles does not provide Richt that kind leeway. It just doesn’t. If changes aren’t made soon, to his staff, and to his philosophy of sentimentality over doing what it takes to win, then Richt will have to go.

This is the SEC. Not Pop Warner Football. There is NO place for playing favorites, for ignoring weaknesses on your staff because they happen to be your best friends, or for rewarding a 5th year senior who’s not nearly as talented (or hurt) as the guys behind him.

Richt cannot win in this way. Florida is back. LSU is a monster. And Saban is building a power in Alabama that will shake the foundations of the league.

And the scary thing is, after all his buffoonary in the summer, if Lame Kiffin can actually coach, Georgia is looking at exactly where they were every year during the Goff and Donnan years: 3rd place in the East and Peach-Fil-A Bowls galore.

There is no URGENCY or ACCOUNTABILITY in Mark Richt and his program right now, and that’s the EXACT right word to describe how I and many others view our beloved Bulldogs.

A lack of URGENCY and ACCOUNTABILITY. Mark Richt refuses to hold his coaching staff and his favored players and himself accountable. We hear the same crap over and over, “We’re so close.” “Our players need to execute better, there’s nothing wrong with the coaching or play-calling.”

You blind homers can ignore the trends all you want.

You can, like Altamaha, scream, “All is well!!!” all you want.

But those of us who are able to look at the program logically and dispassionately see what was, what is, and what will be if trends don’t change.

And yes, it p i s s e s us off.

Top 5 reasons UGA will lost to S. Carolina tonight…

5. UGA looking ahead to Georgia Tech game
4. Refs call 3 sideline penalties on Richt for doing the “Soul-ja Boy”
3. Georgia mascot,Uga, bites Joe Cox in the crotch prior to kick-off
2. UGA penalized for endzone celebration after Joe Cox completes 1 pass
And the #1 reason UGA will lose at home to S. Carolina is……..
1. Right before game time, Coach Richt announces his “retirement” to
become full time pitchman for Carpets of Dalton!!! Now all you Pup
