A few random observations, impressions and questions from Saturday’s game …
For Georgia, it was largely a game of mistakes. My brother Tim, who joined me to watch the game at Allen’s in Athens, summed it up well when he noted that even with the offense falling off after the first quarter, what the game came down to was two turnovers that produced 10 points and a long kick return that set up another OSU score.
Speaking of the offense, what happened to the game plan after Georgia’s opening scoring drive? The Dogs came out with a varied attack that relied heavily on the run with Richard Samuel, had a seemingly confident Joe Cox spreading the passing game around to various receivers and saw a few new wrinkles in the red zone with backup QB Logan Gray in for one play and two-way freshman Branden Smith taking a direct snap in a “Wild Dawg” play and running it a couple of other times.
And then Mike Bobo seemed to turn the page. The Dogs moved away from the run and tried to rely primarily on the arm of Cox, who suddenly seemed a lot more hesitant. He wasn’t on target much of the day; even on some balls that were caught, the receivers had to reach behind or high for the ball. Of course, there were a couple of other passes that, while not perfect, should have been caught. All in all, the passing game was not at all impressive.
Why would Georgia’s coaching staff go away from what was working?
And whether it was the flu or just a mediocre day on Cox’s part, why didn’t we see more of Gray at QB, especially in the second half after Cox overthrew several people and fumbled?
Defensively, the Dogs played a good game. Not a great game, because they still seem incapable of catching interceptable balls that hit them in the hands. But the offense did them no favors, giving OSU a short field several times, and the Georgia defense held OSU’s offense in check most of the first half and kept them well below the number of points they’re accustomed to scoring.
Where was the supposed improvement in the kickoff game? OK, at least none of them went out of bounds. But Blair Walsh made a 53-yard field goal, the longest of his career, and yet he can’t put a kickoff in the endzone? And the coverage on kickoffs was still abysmal. On that long Cowboys return, the seam down the middle of the Dogs’ coverage looked like an open interstate highway.
As for the punting game, Drew Butler was superb (helped by some great bounces when OSU’s Dez Bryant unwisely let the ball hit the ground a couple of times), with an average of 57 yards for six punts, and Prince Miller had some great returns. Unfortunately, they were nullified by block-in-the-back penalties. The Dogs didn’t draw as many flags as the Cowboys, but ours hurt more. And we had to punt way too often thanks to the sputtering offense.
On the subject of the officiating, it was inconsistent. That first flag on Georgia for unnecessary roughness on a receiver was pretty lame. It was a vicious hit but a fair one. In the chest, not the helmet. Even ABC’s Sean McDonough, not one of my favorites, was all over that, noting, “If they’re gonna throw a flag on everything that looks bad, you might as well go play touch football.” Sure, they threw a makeup flag against the Cowboys for the same thing. But how could they not call it again later against OSU when it was blatant?
That lack of a pass interference call on the Cowboys in the first quarter was another poor showing by the officials. And there was that bad spot down near the Georgia goal line. Why on earth didn’t Mark Richt challenge that?
And can a few days of cooler weather in Athens this week really be blamed for the fact that the Georgia team seemed to be wilting by the third quarter? A team that trains in August in Georgia shouldn’t be that fatigued that early.
More on Sunday. …

I am usually one fo the more reserved poesters here. But I am DONE. Tired of the offense going away from what’s wokring. Then the D, while better in some series than others, backs off in critical situations. How can UGA not recruit DEs that can rush the passer??? And give the ball to one of the 4+ RBs on the depth chart. Give ‘em the ball till they shut it down. Enough with this “pretty stuff”!!!

This team will never reach it’s potential offensively under Bobo. His offense depends upon the morst exceptional talent which he doesn’t have at RB or QB. He did nothing to help them, no motion, no moving AJ around…..and we waited a whole offseason to have Fabris $hit the KO coverage again?? We drop two INTs, and had two poor calls by the officials. But you make you rown luck. This team is just not held to the highest standard and I am not sure the players believe in their coaches outside of Richt and Searels. Just a hunch.

Mark Richt is a chump. I am sick and tired of fooling myself each year. The radio call in show was a joke also. Everybody was so positive and they said we are just playing with “House Money”! The Georgia football program is in serious trouble. At what point is enough enough? Mark Richt has peaked and this is the downhill slide. His better days are behind him!

We need a change or we will never see a NC. Its been 29 looooong years. How much longer must we wait. I have a feeling Kiffin will get one before Richt. Hope im wrong but that guy wants to win. Period. Our coach is just a nice guy.

It’s looking pretty ugly for the Dawgs. Possible regression back to the days of Jim Donnan (5-6 win seasons). Serious, next week is a toss up, Ark, Tenn are much improved while our defense under Silly Martinez is still weak!! Then later we have LSU, and FL???? Damn, that could be 5 or 6 loses right there and that doesn’t include the game with insects from the Flats. If we lose 3 more, then we might as well start the Freshman Murray to get him prepared for next year.

Additional observations. Cox has got to take deeper drops as he had trouble seeing down the field. Orson Charles should be moved to receiver (too light to play TE in SEC). Aron White is not big enough to be a blocking tight end. UGA will have problems this year when it’s 4 and 1 near the goal line. I don’t care how loyal Joe has been to the program, but it was obvious today why he sat the last 3 years. He played worse today than he did 3 years ago as a redshirt freshman. AJ Green was very frustrated as it appeared Cox could not get him the ball down the field. He was open several times, but Cox had trouble seeing him it appeared. I thought UGA was supposed to be more conditioned this year? We have all american Sr. DTs that spent more time on the sideline than field. Was someone injured or just out of shape? Tyson played more than our 2 starters. UGA even had a walk-on play at DT. Same old story with WM, lots of arm tacklking, no pass rush, and DBs can’t catch a cold. I watched the Spring game twice and it appears UGA is as bad as we looked in the Spring. Joe was terrible in that game and Murray was the best QB on the field that day. Play him now.

Opening drive look like the Michigan State bowl game. Great variety and then we hit the snooze buttom. Southern Cal started a freshman quarterback. Coach needs to play our best (future)player, even if he doesn’t know the system inside out. Who was the player(s) first down on the punt team who was so out of control they flew by the punt returner when he took one step to the side.

It was a disappointing game from an offensive standpoint. I would have like to have seen Logan Gray in more just to “mix it up”. The officiating sucked but that is NOT why we lost. We best not overlook South Caroline or we may be 0-2! Yikes! All the fair weather dawgs will be barking for Richt to go. Hey George, just curious, who would you hire. I thought the defense was adequate at times. The offense – other than that first drive – must have missed the flight from Athens. My thoughts:
1. Cox – flu or no flu – didn’t play well. Worse yet, I think he gave it everything he had – think he’s a good kid. I think he gave all he had and it wasn’t very much.
2. The play calling seemed bizarre.
I hope I’m wrong about how bad the Dawgs are. But if I am not I think, fairly early in the season, Gray needs to start getting some experience. That way a bad season won’t be a total loss, we’ll at least be getting him ready for the next year.
All this could end up an over-reaction and I’d be pleased to be wrong. But I don’t think, especially on offense, that we have the horses.

Rome, I don’t think George was saying that Kiffin was a better coach than Richt… just that he had more EMOTION towards winning than Richt. BB – not ready to fire the coach, just make some decisions instead of going with the de-facto. Gray might not be a bad decision. I didn’t see a whole lot for Cox today. Could’ve been the flu, might not have been. J. Cox had some time today, and for all the accolades for accuracy, I just didn’t see it. The Dogs need to go to a mauling game with the OL and TBs, and play-action occasionally from Cox. Otherwise, put Gray in to transition to a spread O. HATE the spread, but that’s the O that suits him.

Very bad performance by Cox. He looked no better than a freshman with his decision making, panic, lack of looking for the secondary receiver, and on and on…might as well put the freshman in there for that kind of performance. Extremely POOR play calling after that opening drive didn’t help the situation.
Defense actually played decently with most points for OSU coming off of turnovers and poor execution on kicking game (a probleme area apparently for the 4th year in a row…). Defense still needs work on coming up with turnovers but better effort on holding down the penalties at least for this game…Martinez still employing that terrible 3 man rush that puts no pressure on the passer (he never learns…) overall, team badly outcoached as OSU made adjustments and Dawgs collapsed…Team C, coaching F…

ATL Dawg..no, you can’t, so please shut up. Has it dawned on anyone that perhaps Bobo and Richt are the culrits today? Read on. We pound the ball early, go down the field and score. Then, next possession, we go on a quarter and a half binge where we go away from the run. Away from our OL pounding their line, and ask Joe to throw the ball repeatedly after a week in which he missed practice due to illness just two days ago. Why, with him sick, do you have him throw deep balls, outs, crossing patterns, etc…repeatedly when Samuel is giving us 5 yards a carry? Why, after the first possession, do we not see Logan more?
Coaching staff let the team down, IMHO.
Long season, conference games are what really count, and you want to get better as the season goes on, not peak early and then fade, ala South Carolina. Don’t give up on the Dawgs

I cannot disagree with anything in your blog. In my 50+ years following UGA, that was the worst offensive coaching ever. Bobo/Richt made me feel I was watching Bobby Cox manage his bullpen. When the QB can’t put the ball where it needs to go, take him out.
I don’t understand how other teams, inluding OKS, can have a Special Teams Coordinator and UGA can’t or refuses to. The STC should be one of the top three on the staff. It’s Offense, Defense AND Special Teams that win games.
Losing to a team that is not better than you is, especially after all the off-season prep, hard to take or even rationalize. I can accept an 18-21 year old not having a good game. I cannot accept coaches having one.

There is a mentality that goes along with winning consistently. Georgia coaches lack this mentality. CMR is a nice guy and that is not a bad thing, but it equates to average in the world of sports. When you think of the teams that win (the big game) on a consistent basis the coach usually has a killer instinct. This individual will be winning by 21 and continue to try and score. Now, some will say that this individual is an a-hole and say that he lack class. The truth of the matter is that he wins because he has this attitude. It is the way that he is hard wired. Players are usually an extension of the coach. They usually have the same mindset or atleast they should. If this hard for some to understand, think about this… Florida has had a coach with this mentality for years and they have owned the dawgs. Remember the penalty in the endzone… the one that made the statement that we aren’t scared of you. Dawgs win. Who has it? Saban has it, Myers has it,Les Miles has it, and Spurrier has it. I know you are saying…Spurrier, but think about this… even with inferior talent its always a close game. Nice guys don’t always finish last, but the rarely finish first. They are usually just AVERAGE

Saouthdawg88… I too wish we had C.King to spell Samuel. That will be nice when they are both healthy. Didn’t see anything special from C.Thomas in his limited carries (other than a fumble, that could be why he’s not more of a factor). If the Dogs will give Samuel/King a solid dose of carry after carry, this season will be fine. It’ll keep the poor pass rush off the field.

Horrible leadership from CMR/Bobo…chalk that loss up to them…is that really the best skill players you can put out there…a running back that goes down too easy, he gets hit and bam, he’s on the ground, no second effort, no putting down a hand and struggle for a few extra yards/feet, nothing nada, just flip the ball to the ref…at QB, well maybe Cox was still under the weather, so what do the coaches do, let him stay in…why not shift gears and bring in Logan Gray for a while and give Cox a break to catch air, or to get his head together…talk about stretching the field, I don’t think Cox could out throw/over throw the secondary to keep them honest…isn’t Gray #2 for a reason…too bad for Cox, but unless he was really hurting, then it’s pretty obvious that someone else better start the next game…it also would had been a great way to see how Gray performs under pressure…either Ok State defense has really improved over last year (wasn’t something mentioned that they were known to give up 40 points a game), or UGA’s offense is more pathic than what was shown today…well they have game film on Cox now so better be ready for more of the same going forward…saw #11 on the sidelines a few times and he wasn’t even holding a clip board and didn’t look like he was even involved in sending in the plays; isn’t that what QB’s do when they aren’t in the game…BTW; “true freshman” Matt Barkley finished 15 for 19 and 298 yds for USC (Gee, most recruiting experts had he and Murray’s abilities pretty much as a toss-up)…I thought the defense actually did a pretty good job against this high powered offense (we’ll have to wait for a few more games to see if they are indeed a “high powered offense”)…loved the play calling with a little over two minutes to go and down by two scores; why golly gee UGA runs the ball, unbelievable…well take comfort in the fact that half the teams lost today and besides they were ranked 9th and UGA was 13th…time to move on to South Carolina…another BTW; at least now we won’t have to listen to the faithfuls chanting/rantings bull crap about Cox deserves the job because he never lost a game, he beat Colorado, he beat Ole Miss, and threw the only TD against Florida…he’s a backup, plain and simple…

Hell No 1958dawg… Kiffin’s team just blew out the Western Kentucky school of akademics… Let’s go out and bring HIM here….that would appease many of these “fans” in here, I’m sure.

The two turnovers deep in our territory killed us. Cox has to take better care of the ball. My concern is that Ok State’s defense is not very good and we still had very little offense. Stafford and Moreno might be missed much more than I originally thought. Not saying it was the reason we lost but the two terrible calls (ball spot when we held them on 4th down and the lame call when we hit their receiver)sucked. Richt should have challenged the spot. Defense in total as a group didn’t play a bad game but the dropped interceptions seem to have now become mental. Still not enough pressure from the ends. Kickoff coverage and kickoff return game was weak. Don’t put a freshman back to receive kicks if you don’t want to take a chance on him running it out of the endzone from 6 yards deep. Are we not going to try to kick it in the endzone this year? Hope Sturdivant is okay. The lack of seemingly overall offensive firepower most concerns me.

1958… who didn’t know that one? Stoops is only as good when his team is more talented.

Erk, et al. Hold out before you judge Ok St defense… I think their new DC might lead them to challenge the ‘Horns this year…

I will have to go with you a little Erk, I am a little worried about our offense. I just have confidence that Coach Richt will make the necessary adjustments. I bet we do see Logan Gray more. I am not sure if Coach will bring out the freshmen yet.

I am a Dawg fan win or lose. However, that was a lackluster performance today. We played one series on offense and after that we never see that offense for the rest of the day. That is just poor coaching. Also our guys looked like 300 pound mules and their feet stuck in mud. Again poor coaching lack of conditioning.
I have long been frustrated with Bobo and/or Richt’s killer instinct with the offense. Cox looked worse than Joe T. ever did. I don’t want to hear the schedule or we lost Stafford and Moreno. USC, UF, TX, etc… reloads year after year. I see UF losing Harvin really hurt.

Why would anyone expect anyhting different from Joe??????
If you remember he got yanked from his first ever career start at Ole Miss. Hey it was a tough game. The defense didn’t play bad…..but they didn’t play great either. If Cox can’t get the ball to AJ down field, then it’s up to Bobo to come up with other ways to get him the ball. There really isn’t any excuses to give. Why can’t all me fellow DAWG fans jsut agree we got beat by a better team today. On the road opening the season against a top 10 team with a QB making his first ever start….thats tough and it showed. Jsut a few player observations:
1. Samuel is fast….but fast doesn’t really mean alot of yards. He has trouble breakin takles big time….but he wil lget tougher and better. For his first start he didn’t do bad and picked up the blitz very well
2. Arron White was no part of game plan. Part of what made UGA’s offense so potent was the use of a TE…..and it;s been 3/4 years since we have had a productive TE
3. Branden Smith-Great athlete but calm down. You can’t make a super play evrey time your on the field….and someone needs to tell him not to run out a kick off 7 yards deep in the end zone. HE looks dangerous with the ball though.
4. The OL looked good. Not great and “dominate” as predicted but good. Losing TS will hurt
5. Still no rush from the DE spot.
5. Didn’t even know R. JOnes was in the game until the penalty.
Any way-Fire this person fire that person….WHATEVER. We got beat today. Shake their hand and move on. Conference play starts next week…..so get gehind te team and the coaches, and support your DAWGS. It was a bad game. Shake it off and move on and get ready for SC.

Does anyone believe that we could lose at least 6 games this season? Has CM lost it? I had a class with Mike Bobo (accounting) and he used to sleep in the back. Every class started at 2 pm but never the less he would always be passed out. Looks like he was again asleep at the wheel today!!!

I’m sorry I am not getting behind a talented team and patting them on the back when they layed and egg for 11 of 12 times when you have the ball. Execution and poor coaching plus it looked like a serious lack on conditioning. Huddling and running on third and long down by 14 with under 7 minutes. Must I go on.

I know of 1 game we could win watching that game today. Tennessee Tech Anybody who says different is kidding themselves. Folks we score 10 points on most likely the 2nd worse D we will see all year.

I don’t feel so bad since Oklahoma lost to BYU and Bradford got knocked out. My guess is Murray starts by midseason. He seems to have the talent to be a gamebreaker. Our running game is not so good with Samuel. He falls on the first hit every time. Cox locked in on receivers, held the ball too long sometimes, missed open guys. And what about that fumble?? It was not a blind side hit – he saw the guy coming – should have covered up the ball and taken the sack. I thought he was supposed to be a heady player? Might as well go with the more talented freshman if you are getting bone head plays from the senior.

At least two top seven teams will have lost when the day is through…and this is just week one. Look for another 2 loss NC team this year…don’t give up yet.

D.Ellis – very good point about Samuel picking up the blitz. I saw several plays where the RBs blocked well (1st time since other than KM24, a RB blocked good). Yeah, need to get A.White and O.Charles on the field at TE and stretch the field when not expected. Good to see B.Smith get some 2-way snaps, look forward to some “trick” plays with him upcoming. OL will be fine (+/- Sturdivant), we’re finding out that he’s fragile and need to move on with more SOLID players like Bean and Boling. Saw NO pass rush, except when CWM dialed up a blitz. R.Jones was in the game in the first half, he was one of the reasons we didn’t hear from Dez for a long time (Evans just brought it to the TV audience).

I have never liked our offense under Mark Richt. It has never been anything but average at best. We have had some phenomenal defenses in the past and that is why we have won a couple of SEC championships. Even with Stafford and Moreno we were inconsistent and were never ranked in the top 20 in total offense. Bobo is his understudy, so as long as Richt is the coach, I fear we will have the same average to below average offense.

3 turnovers, poor special teams play and poor play calling on offense. UGA has lost its mojo and poise. Richt is a very good coach, but something is missing!! I hope they find it before the season is down the tubes.
