Show your UGA colors Friday

Banner Co. shirt (UGA Bookstore)

Banner Co. shirt (UGA Bookstore)

Yeah, the fifth annual College Colors Day being observed Friday is basically a promotional stunt for the college licensing industry, but it’s still as good an excuse as any to break out your UGA red and black and wear it to work or school.

And with the first home game just over a week away, there’s still time to update your wardrobe with the latest in Dawgwear.

I mean, you wouldn’t want to be caught still wearing that No. 7 or No. 24 Nike replica jersey from the Stafford-Moreno era when you can express your support for the team by wearing the number of one of the current nonstars. (I’ll leave for another venue the discussion of whether it’s uncool or not for anyone over the age of 21 to wear an athletic jersey in public. Game days in Athens certainly see a lot of them on fans of all ages.)

This year’s batch of jerseys spotlight No. 8 (A.J. Green), No. 35 (Rennie Curran), No. 22 (Richard Samuel) and No. 4 (Caleb King). Nike makes the red home jersey, white road jersey and black spirit jersey, but not every dealer carries all three colors or all four numbers. Retail price is generally $60.

Beyond jerseys, you can find just about every type of licensed sportswear, from shirts to jackets to sweatshirts to shorts to sweater vests featuring UGA’s colors and logos. One of the most popular Georgia items that’s available everywhere I’ve looked is the 2009 Nike polo shirt, also known as the “double-reverse polo.” It comes in red, black or white, features the “G” logo and generally sells for $60.

There are countless T-shirts from Nike, Champion, JanSport and numerous other manufacturers available in Bulldog designs. A particularly nice group of shirts I’ve bought a couple of is the College Vault line from Banner Supply Co. These tees have a vintage, “distressed” look and a nice, soft feel. I’ve seen them selling for $29 to $32.

Banner also has a vintage-looking dark gray hooded zip-up sweatshirt with “BULLDOGS” in raised lettering on the front, and white and black sweatshirts, too. Price range is generally $77 to $88.

A line of shirts I’ve only seen at the UGA Bookstore in Athens (which is open on game days) features customized Hairy Dawg designs for most of the university’s schools and colleges. For example, the shirt for

School shirt (Photo by Olivia King)

School shirt (Photo by Olivia King)

the School of Law has Hairy carrying a briefcase and the scales of justice and wearing a blindfold. The one for the School of Public and International Affairs that I picked up for my son has the mascot with an American flag in one paw and a globe in the other. The pharmacy school’s shirt has him with a mortar and pestle. And so on. These shirts are reasonably priced at $18.

Some folks like to start the season with a “schedule” T-shirt, and there at least a couple of variations in stores right now, including an $18.95 “All Roads Lead to Georgia” shirt with an Interstate-style shield on the front and the schedule on the back. Another has a “New Sheriff in Town” Western theme with mugshots of the “12 most wanted” opponents on the back. It sells for around $18.

Other folks like a T-shirt pointing toward one particular game. The UGA Bookstore has a prominent display of shirts for this year’s visit by Arizona State, with a “The Devils Went Down to Georgia” theme, selling for $20.

Personally, I don’t think anyone looks good in pants covered in anybody’s logo, even UGA’s, but there are plenty of folks out there who disagree, and for them Campus Chino has some shorts with little Bulldogs all over them ($68) or long pants in the same design ($80). They come in khaki, red or black.

Other items I spotted trawling various stores and Web sites include the Nike visor in black and red or red and white ($18), Nike sweatshirts in red or black ($50 to $60), Champion crewneck sweatshirts at half that price, the Nike track jacket ($60), a host of caps (adjustable, flex or fitted) in various combinations of red and black (generally $16 to $28), longsleeved T-shirts ($20 to $24) and, for the budget-conscious, the MV Sport rolled T-shirts (sold in a tube) for just $11.99.

I’ve done most of my Bulldogs shopping either at the UGA Bookstore, the Clubhouse in Athens or Georgiadogs.com, but there are lots more outlets, especially online. Just google “Georgia Bulldogs apparel” and you’ll find plenty.

Meanwhile, let’s get back to this year’s crop of jerseys. Which number/player is your current favorite? Feel free to comment, vote in the poll or do both.

Which 2009 replica UGA jersey is your favorite?

Academy Sports has a huge selection of Bulldawg apparrel. They have a smaller Tech selection, not as a dig, just not as many Tech fans in Augusta.

Sorry Tech fans, I have not checked out Walmart’s selection.

Bill, I’d like to think we will see a lot of number 7 this year. Perhaps not 24, but definitely 7. Book it.

How much you getting paid for this ad? Follett must be so happy you linked to them in your blog item. Well I guess you might as well try to get advertisers to read the product, lest they actually buy any ad space.

I wouldn’t wear anything red or black if my life depended on it. I’d be afraid people would confuse me with some of your fugly azzes having another black out or something. LOL. Like the (funeral) that Alabama gave you last year 31-0 (half time). And the way we buried your fugly azzes (immediately after half time) 26-0. LOL. Burn the red and black like Florida does each and every year. LOL.

I spent 100 bucks yesterday buying Alabama stuff and a guy beside was going to buy a number 8 jersey and I had to point him to the Georgia section instead of buying Julio Jones jersey. We both
laughed and wished each others team well. Nike stuff is real expensive but it last longer than the
cheaper stuff (walmart). GO DAWGS!!

My son always gets a jersey made at Bulldog Sporting Goods in Athens. Each year he chooses a freshman who he thinks will have a big impact/career. In the past, he has gotten Richard Samuel (last year), Knowshon (from his redshirt year, not the premade), Reshad Jones, Stafford, and I can’t remember who I am leaving out.
This year he is deciding between Orson Charles and Branden Smith. He’ll be wearing Richard Samuel in Stillwater Saturday…look for him!

All georgia merchandise sold at the Bills, Dollar General, Wal Mart and K Mart stores in central and south Georgia have it marked up an extra 75%.

It’s a fact. All Georgia Tech sports wear sold in Malls and the finest sporting good national chains is more expensive than identical sportswear with uga emblems. Granted some of you georgia folks may have to load up the beverly hillbillies wagon and drive a few hours, but the money you save will be worth it.

Last time I was at Walmart, as I was walking to the three large round racks and the whole wall of DAWG paraphanalia, I looked over to the little itty bitty rack of GT stuff and noticed that someone had wiped a big ol’ green booger on one of those piss yellow jersies. My wife and I could hardly contain ourselves we were laughing so hard.

Looks like the Techies still can’t get a blog of thier own. When you are the little brother of the superstar it works that way. I hear that they are now giving Tech jerseys away at the Gardner Webb games. They tried giving them away in Atlanta at the 31,000 seat Dodd/Grant complex, but nobody showed up for the giveaway. One Eyed Jack, it was actually a Tech Grad that did that, becuase I saw his class ring when he was picking his nose.

Pretty good, Tech fans on par with UF. I guess they have been drinking from the Yellow Jacket Taliban beer bong. The last game coached by Bobby Dodd was when Spurrier beat them in the Orange Bowl in 1967. That was the last time that Tech went to a major bowl. 42 years ago.

Liek most of the Tech Fans say, Yellow River Fuzz, Saint Simons Says Nothing New, m little boy,Rambling Rene’; are the best representatives of why Tech is now rated behind UGA in all of the college academic rankings. Kiplingers UGA # 4 and Tech #16. Eat your heart out line drawing, number crunching losers. DOGS RULE OVER YOU, like Paul Johnson says when he sees UGA clean himself on the field I WISH I COULD DO THAT.
