Here’s an interesting contrast between Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy and Georgia’s Mark Richt.
An AP report out of Stillwater says Gundy isn’t sure he wants his team shaking hands with the Dogs before Saturday’s game, as the American Football Coaches Association is requesting. He’s afraid a brawl might result.
As one friend put it, Gundy, of “I’m a man” rant fame, seems to be wound a little tight. Such is life in the spotlight when you’re not accustomed to being there.
Meanwhile, Tuesday night at the Touchdown Club of Athens meeting I attended, Richt was getting all warm and fuzzy talking about watching his son Jon play for Mars Hill College against North Greenville last weekend. Richt was struck by how different it was from big-time college football.
“There are probably more people in this room than were at that game,” he told the Athens club. But what really touched Richt was at the end of the game the players from the two schools shook hands, held a prayer together on the field and then their friends and families joined them on the field for congratulations and hugs.
Richt recognized, of course, that such a scenario would be impossible at UGA, where everything is on a much bigger scale. But, he noted wistfully, “It’s so big that sometimes we lose the joy of the game.”
It wasn’t always like this
As expected, the last remaining home football tickets, returned by opponents, were snapped up in minutes Tuesday, making this the ninth consecutive year the Dogs have sold out every home game.
It wasn’t always such.
Reflecting Tuesday night on the death in May of Jimmy Dudley, one of the founding members of the Touchdown Club of Athens, club secretary Candler Meadors noted to Richt that the organization was started in 1946 by a group of Athens businessmen at the request of the UGA administration.
The reason? “To try and sell tickets to football games.”
Richt, players on OSU
Georgiadogs.com has a rundown on Tuesday’s news conference at which Richt and some of his players talked about Saturday’s game against Oklahoma State.
On playing a Top 10 team on the road, Richt said: “I don’t think we can play cautious. What I mean is, I don’t think we can hold anything back that I think could help us win the game. The good news is Joe [Cox] knows the system. We don’t have to sugarcoat anything for him. He can run anything that we do from a mental point of view. There might be some things he does better physically than others. We won’t say we’ll throw every route that Matthew [Stafford] threw; we are going to do what Joe can do best. … The same thing is true for [tailback] Richard [Samuel]. I don’t know what our run-pass ratio will be. We still have to define that. We absolutely know we have to run the ball well to have a chance to be a good offensive team. That’s not just Saturday; it’s all season long. We are hoping for a great balance. If people decide to stop the pass, we have to run well. If they decide to overload the run, we have to throw it well. That’s what I mean by balance.”
Munson update
It’s good to see Larry Munson is still getting himself all worked up about one of the Dogs’ opponents, as Tony Barnhart reports.
I saw Munson’s just-published book written with Barnhart, “From Herschel to a Hobnail Boot: The Life and Times of Larry Munson” (Triumph Books, $24.95), prominently displayed on a table Tuesday at the University of Georgia Bookstore in Athens.
Barnhart says Munson will be on hand at the bookstore to sign copies of the book from 1 to 3 p.m. before the game against South Carolina on Sept. 12.
That should be one long line; better get there early.
Pollack’s view of defense
The Red and Black was on hand Tuesday as former UGA defensive terror David Pollack made a promotional appearance in Athens. The student paper notes Pollack didn’t mince words in talking about last year’s Dogs defense.
“Look at that defense last year, I can’t say they were good and that’s looking without any [subjectivity],” Pollack said. “They weren’t a good defensive unit, I think they’ve got a lot of guys coming back, they’ve got strong defensive tackles, strong linebackers up the gut, [and] a couple of key guys that you’ve got to replace.”
As for Pollack’s old spot at defensive end, he’s particularly high on Justin Houston, who’s suspended for the first two games. “I think Houston’s gonna be a guy at that defensive end position that’s gonna show some people that he can get after the quarterback, which is huge because you need somebody there.”
I have meetings this afternoon, so I’m not sure if I’ll be back on the blog today. In the meantime, if you haven’t checked out my report on Richt’s talk to the Touchdown Club Tuesday night, here it is.

Because we are known for getting into brawls before games. It is a big game, I don’t think CMR will do anything to jeopardize any of the players from playing in the game.

Enemy fan here… but UGA is going to win this game only because of the calm, focused demeanor of Richt. The UGA team seems ready to go, but with an assured air of confidence. Okie State seems like a shaken can of Coke on hot Georgia asphalt in August. It ain’t pretty.

Regarding Gundy’s comment about shaking hands…is he wound up tight or trying to turn his team into a self-proclaimed bunch of bad-a$$ thugs?
I think his comments are unfortunate but provide a meaningful insight into how he’s attempting to motivate his team. He and his team aren’t use to the notoriety and their lack of maturity is showing.
So…let them come out trash-mouthing if they like. If UGA beats them, they are left to explain it after the game. If they beat UGA, they can continue down the road to the thuggery their coach seems to embrace.

In regards to Gundy’s comment about a pre-game brawl, I just sent the following comment to my father and fellow dawg fan that I would simply like to cut, paste, and post.
“I find his comment about fisticuffs very irresponsible. It sends mixed messages. When he made that comment, he indicated he doesn’t want it to happen. But just stating it as a possibility could encourage a few thug players(on both teams) to start something and live up to the expectation.
Very irresponsible comment. I hope the game starts and ends without an incident. Can you imagine how awful it would be if the game didn’t even start b/c of a fight? Both teams would probably lose their right to a bowl game amongst other NCAA penalties.
That comment puts Richt’s team at risk. If I was him, I’d probably have a little birdy make a complaint to an NCAA authority.
Uncalled for! Both teams are not rivals and there is no history of bad blood so why on earth did he think it necessary to say a fight could ensue? Sounds like a desperation tactic from a desperate man.
Stupid thing to say!”

He is wound pretty darn tight, but I think I understand what he was “trying” to say here. 10 basketball players shaking hands before tipoff is one thing. 170 guys in shoulder pads and helmets just doesn’t lend itself to shaking hands before the game. I don’t think he is trying to say that it can’t be done. Football is different… the players are sky high right before the game unlike baseball, basketball, soccer, etc…
I like the idea of the players doing this AFTER the game. Their adrenaline is spent and they are exhausted (the one’s that played anyway). I’d like to see the 22 players on the field at the end of the game shake hands and say good game and then get off the field or join the prayer circle if they wish.

Lets worry about fighting when we play Tennessee, South Carolina, Florida, Tech, and Auburn. Those games are tough because there is a lot of history between the teams and players. There is always a hint of electricity in the air before the game. This is a afternoon game against a team we have little history with. I am pretty sure they can shake hands without hitting someone. I a Georgia player and a Florida player can shakes hands and take a knee and pray together after that game, I think our guys have enough disciplne to shake hands with OSU before the game. The players may talk some trash during the game, but that usually doesn’t start until the clock is running. Unless of course you go out and stomp on the home teams logo in mid field. Then its on!

I officiated b’all for 26 years and I have witnessed several coaches at all levels who should not have EVER been hired to be around children!! I think its sad commentary for a coach not to take control of his/her team to at least promote good sportsmanship, before, during and after an athletic contest. Gatorman…Spurrier would have won the game in Athens without scoring 50 too. Richt calls for a celebration penalty. I think we kicked off from the 8 or something giving you good field position. We paid the price…and then some. All last year every ref was just waiting to hit us for 15 yards, earned or not. Spurrier kicked us when we were already down…as did Corch Meyer with his timeouts last year. We more than paid the price for that.
Spikes should have been called for Unsportsmanlike Conduct on the very first play of last year’s game. Laying on Knowshon screaming in his face like that. Class Class Class. If a UGA player does the same thing, Penn Wagers (a Gator’s best friend) at least throws him out of the game, if not puts him to death by firing squad. You set the tone of the game last year with everybit of a dirty play–so I don’t want to hear about the celebration penalty ever again.

uuugh,
I’ll agree with you on that one. Every team sees its fair share of horrible officiating. Our’s skyrocketed last year. I hadn’t seen anything like that for UGA until last year. So many horrible calls from the first game to the last game. I’m NOT saying we would’ve won more last year had some of those calls not been made, however, momentum is essential in college football, and poor officiating can take that away from a team.

Sanford…aside from the Overlooked Spike play in the Florida game last year, there was a n ignored defensive pass interference call that resulted in a UF interception. Plus on a long UF touchdown pass, there was an obvious offensive pass interference call, where the receiver literally pulled our DB out of the way by his shirt, that was totally ignored as well. That is just what sticks out in my mind a year later.
Did we have enough to beat them last year? No. But it shouldn’t have been as out of hand as it was. It was closer than the score indicated.
I am hoping for FAIR officiating in every game this year…a departure from the payback that we got last season.

“UF was just messing with us in the first half.”
calling BS on this one. There were a couple of pivotal point early in that game that, had they gone the other way, the game could have gone down to the wire.
As it was, 1) we didn’t make a few crucial plays, 2) we got screwed on a couple calls that were alluded to earlier, and 3) we just “caught a bad bounce”.
We definitely fell apart after halftime and probably even gave up, but that game could’ve turned out a bit differently. I’m not saying the Dawgs would have won, and I’m not taking credit away from UF, just pointing out how much small things change the direction of a game.

uuugh…..while I think Florida still would have won that game last year……I agree with you on the officiating from that game alone. Does anyone remember that early in the first half, Florida was at a 4th and short and moved the ball just shy of the first down marker while going out of bounds, yet the officials gave him a very nice forward movement to the first down. Richt even requested a coach’s review on the spot of the ball and replay clearly showed that the Florida receiver was well short (even CBS commentators Vern and Danielson agreed and said it will be UGA ball) but then that jerk off of a head official came back and said that the play stood with no reason given. That play showed me that the officials were going to give Florida all the close calls and that UGA would suffer anything remotely resembling a penalty.
The Truth, seriously only twice since Richt has been head coach have Georgia players gotten out of control on the field and stomping on the other team’s logo. The UT game in 01 and the Vandy game in 07. After each of those games Richt was stern about how wrong that was and how he intended to handle it with the players on Monday morning. The 07 Florida game was an emotional ploy that backfired and he admitted it. The celebrating on every play stuff happens throughout college football and happened several times in Georgia’s face last year alone.

Coach Richt, already having two children of his own, goes to Ukraine and adopts two children from an orphanage. Raises these kids as his own, and won’t let the media make a big deal of it. Hell, I could go on about this but I won’t.
This year, he suspends Figgins, a big TE (a position we desperately need filled) for six games and Houston (at DE which we all know is a weekness for us) for two games, including this OSU game, for breaking team rules. I just can’t see how people continue to question his character.

Furrdaddy, Soccer players are the best atheletes in the world. Do not diminish their talent and toughness by claiming that they merely run up and down a field kicking a ball. Many times a Soccer match is more rough than a football game…and it is always more physically demanding. Football players go hard for about 8-10 seconds at a time then stand around for another 40 seconds before doing it again. Only half of the starters are even doing that at a given time. Almost their entire bodies are covered in pads too. A soccer player goes hard for 30 seconds at a time and then jogs to rest before another sprint…wearing only shinguards. Soccer teams are also only allowed 3 subs for the whole 90 minutes (which is 30 more than a football game–that has a built in rest period after every single play!)
Go Dawgs…but don’t think for a second soccer players are any less of an athlete than any player on our team–even AJ.

I agree. No matter how you feel about UGA, no one can say that Mark Richt is anything but a class act. He doesn’t scream and yell, nor does he doesn’t use timeouts in the last 30 seconds just to be a hole. In fact, two years ago GA was on the 10 yard line about to score on Tech again and rather than do so, Richt let the time expire. If you want to argue anything, choose something other than Richt being a drama queen or having no class. Those comments need to be reserved for Spurrier, Meyer, and Kiffen.

uuugh, thanks for reminding me his name was Wagers, i remember him very well. Remember what he did to Mimbs, our punter, right before halftime of the 07 Auburn game? When Mimbs punted on UGA’s last possession right before halftime, he slipped and fell on the turf. The commentators, and apparently Wagers, thought he was trying to draw a roughing the kicker penalty (which Mimbs later said he just slipped) and threatened to throw a flag if he didn’t get up and play the play. First of all, Mimbs was doing anything intentional as he later stated. Second, that kinda play happens all the time and the ref had no right to tell the player to get up or get a flag when was no where near the play. Rightfully so, Richt gave Wagers an earful going into the locker room at half time.
The Truth, I totally understand your logic as I too have played the game and respect the sportsmanship. Nothing wrong with old school. I don’t like the dancing on the logo, (yelling scoreboard to a rival team during a big win is enough for me). I don’t think the UGA program, or most of CFB for that matter, are at the level of hijinx that we saw out of the U during the 80s and 90s. No disrespect to your Alma Mater, but back then they were the definition of the word “Thug”. I was just glad to hear Richt condemn those actions and state very clearly there will be consequences.

Dawg327 – Well said!
Our biggest problem last year on defense was lack of a pass rush, and going into the OSU game we’re facing probably the best offense/QB we’ll see all year outside of UF/Tebow, and he suspends the best DE for the first two games because it’s the right thing to do.
By contrast Gundy will have P.Cox in the game and wait on the legal system before deciding what to do. I’m sure his court date will somehow be postponed until mid-Jan 2010 so he can play the whole season.
Richt could have picked any two games he wanted to suspend Houston for, but he didn’t pick Vandy and Tenn Tech, he picked the first two.
Now THAT is what I call being a MAN!

BR, totally agree with your assessment on Richt. One more thing to throw in your comment…..whens the last time you remember Mark Richt running up the score on an opponent when the game was well in hand? And I don’t mean defensive TDs or RBs breaking loose for a 40+ yard TD run, I mean passing late in the game or going for it on 4th and 1 when the game is well in hand? Instead Richt runs the ball up the gut for short yardage, chews the clock, or kicks a field goal for 4th and 1 inside the Red Zone. He is the total opposite of Spurrier, Meyer, or Stoops.

our coach was right not to want to shake the hands of the dawgs.
when you consider that….
- uga has 6-10 players arrested each and every year
- they have history of doing dumb things with the consent of the coach such as stomping on the logo of the opposing team
- there were some uga players who recently beat up some high school kids, strip them naked and than piss on em. yes dawgs that story made headlines in oklahoma. its sad that your pr department kept that incident quiet.
- your fans routinely toss cups of beer on opposing players, coaches and fans regardless if you win or lose
- your fans have been known to expose themselves and piss on opposing fans as they exited the your stadium *sic*
- your fans have been classified as some of the most rude obnoxious drunks that have been witnessed in over 40 years of broadcasting games. this was reported by a national broadcasting crew last year.
thank god we are not playing those ‘classy’ dawqs in the cesspool in athens. we will have our hands full as it is with the thugs on thier team.
i am just hoping that they dont try and do that sec intimidation thing and sucker punch our qb in the pregame meeting on the field.
in light of all the antics those classy bulldawgs like to pull i whole heartedly oppose any kind of hand shaking with that team and its faux saint coach.

OSU Fan:
First of all, the players never had the coach’s consent to stomp on the opposing player’s midfiled logo.
Second, the story regarding UGA players beating up high school players was totally fabricated by OSU to provide a little fodder for motivation.
Third, I have been going to UGA games for my entire life and have never seen a fan piss on oposing fans.
And last to call Athens a cesspool… I’ve been through Oklahomo several times and you want to talk about a real turd of a state?
As far as your quarterback being suckerpunched… believe me, when this game is over, he’s gonna wish he had the option of a lights out sucker punch because he is going to be hurting. I would’nt be surprised if the is out of the game before it’s over.

OSU fan…and what is the arrest record comparison of the players on THIS year’s team? The one that your MAN is afraid to shake hands with?
Your “super classy” OSU team has more arrests than our “classless” players.
All of our players have been punished for their discretions in the present and past. But Perrish Cox will likely not miss a snap this weekend.
Whose team is it that you said had more class?
Thanks

Only the captains should be shaking hands before a game, come on! What next, they gonna let girls play this game. This might be your chance Saint Simons. This is the most stupid idea I have heard. What is the AFCA looking for, their 15 minutes.

OSU Fan- to add to Furrdaddy’s comments I don’t know how our fans can pour cups of beer on opposing fans when we don’t even serve alcohol at games.
Speaking of arrests, we haven’t had any this offseason, that I’m aware of, however OSU had P.Cox arrested for driving on a suspended lic./no insurance (wonder what he did to get it suspended in the first place), and your starting TE left the program for “personal” reasons of which I’m sure at least one of them had to do with a Stillwater woman filing a restraining order against him.
Don’t throw stones if you live in a glass house. Also when you try to build your case with a house of lies you lose all credibility.
Has UGA in the past had players get into trouble during the offseason? Yes. (Just like every other major program)Have most of those incidents been blown out of proportion? Yes. Most of them have been things like underaged drinking, or traffic violations, with the exception of M.Lemon who beat the crap out of some student at an off campus party. Poor judgement on his part but he was probably provoked.
Also care to back up your “6-10 arrested every year” with some hard facts & numbers? Didn’t think so.
Perhaps you should be more concerned with how tight your coach seems to be and your OWN team’s players not handling the hype of being a top 10 team very well. Of course their stay in the top 10 will be short lived, so enjoy it while you can. The party is over for the cowboys after Sat.

I’m worried about being able to score enough points to keep up with these guys. They have what many consider to be the best receiver in the country, a great running back, a very effective running back, protected by a left tackle who will be the first OL chosen in the NFL draft. Don’t get overconfident.

Or, since you can’t, why don’t you just do the world a favor and take a dive off the North Avenue bridge. Rush hour is just starting, so if you hurry, it’ll all be over real quick.

It’s going to be interesting. But I think the pokies are gonna score, and maybe not just a little. When you’ve got the talent they’ve got at QB, RB, WR and OL and you’re going against them with our defense, it’s a little scary. At least to me. I think if their QB plays well (mostly error-free), they win. But that’s a big IF. If our defense comes up big (several turnovers) I think WE win. And there are your ESPN “KEYS to the GAME”, brought to you by Ketel One. Salty.
