Considering the preseason crowning of Oklahoma State as this year’s Cinderella team in college football, I was already expecting ABC’s coverage of Saturday’s game in Stillwater to be heavy on Cowboys hype and ready with a story line about Georgia being the Pokes’ first step in a magical season.
You know the drill. Okie State has all those offensive stars and plays television’s favorite style of offense. Georgia lost all its star power from last year and its defense is suspect. Kirk Herbstreit of ESPN’s “Game Day” even made reference recently to the Dogs “limping” into Stillwater. And he wasn’t just talking hamstrings.
Besides all that, ABC loves the Cowboys, and Saturday’s opener will be OSU’s sixth straight regular season game to be televised by the alphabet network.
Then came the topper: I saw that the ABC crew for the game, slated to kick off at 3:36 p.m. Eastern, will have Sean McDonough on play-by-play, Matt Millen as analyst and Holly Rowe on the sideline.
McDonough is easily my least favorite college football commentator who doesn’t work for Fox Sports. I wasn’t a big fan to start with, dating from his calls of some Braves games back in the early ’90s when he was working baseball, but I wrote him off after the way his coverage of the 2005 game between the Dogs and Vandy crossed the line. A touchdown reception by Georgia’s Bryan McClendon was reviewed by the instant-replay official, and despite the fact that McDonough seemed to think the call clearly should be overturned, it was instead upheld. McDonough whined about it the rest of the game.
Looks like it’ll be a good day to turn down the sound on the TV and listen to Scott Howard and Eric Zeier on the radio.

m,
Only you are stupid enough to not realize that your UGA hatred only serves to keep Tech as a 2nd tier program. You can’t beat UGA unless we underachieve. I want Tech to win 9 or 10 games before they play us. Then we can beat a GOOD TECH TEAM.
You are also stupid and delusional enough to believe that UGA is going to be lousy ANY YEAR with Richt at the helm. We were all upset over an underachieving 10 win team while Tech bought rings for 9 wins and a 1 out of 8 win over UGA. Then you got blasted in your bowl game.
Win something like a bowl game or a conference title and earn some respect instead of blowing your inane vomit about how good you are.
You better worry about Clempson sneaking in to your home stadium and crushing your dreams.

macrotech,
This is going to be a nail biter causing elevated blood pressures and heart attacks throughout the south. Our D is better but OSU has a good OL, a good back, a good QB who is mobile and a stud WR. Joe Cox is going to surprise the talking heads and will throw to a lot of different receivers. The RB’s are not talented enough to just line it up and run it.

although matt millen might not have been qualified to be a gm, he was one of the more entertaining play by play guys in the nfl before he got the detroit gig. i’m curious to see how he does in college football.

Sean McDonough is one of best play-by-play announcers out there. Nothing personal against Eric Zeir, but he has an awful radio voice. Zeir was not hired based on qualifications, just like Bill King at the Junkyard Blawg. Sean McDonough did a great job on the Georgia/Florida game when Bobo was quarterback and the Dawgs upset Spurrier,

Sean McDonough is abysmal, he adds NO excitement to the telecast. Matt Millen is a very good PRO analyst but his college knowledge would fit inside a GaTech walnut sized jock strap. ABC can do better that. Holly Rowe talks so much, its clear she wants to be in the booth. I do respect her though because when asked about her favorite part of SEC football (she grew up in the North) she responded “the intense tailgating and the wonderful food!” From the looks of her and the way she sweats, I believe she was being honest. The Dawgs will play better than the booth will broadcast, it will be fun hearing McDonough eat some Cowboy Crow!

if we are efficient and thus effective on offense we are looking at a 42-24 type game with most of their points coming in the 4th quarter-i watched that Holiday Bowl game again and just not that impressed w/ overall team-QB is good but we have faced better and better RBs as well-can a WR really carry a team?

It’s kind of funny how quickly a Tech fan forgets the seven year drought they had against the Dawgs. I would suspect that such a fine school of brainiacs would have no problem recollecting those painful years. Almost two full graduating classes and one year is what they have to show?
It wasn’t our faults you hired a washed-up nice guy like Gailey. It was a sad day when the athletic board at Tech realized that Gailey believed the entire time he was going to work UGA and not for the Techies. He just heard “Want to coach at Georgia…” and stopped paying attention until he tried to get a drink Between the Hedges on Broad Street and almost got round housed by the patrons. I don’t blame him for not trying, I’d be mad too when I realized I was going to have to teach the West Coast offense on graphing calculators. Sounds a bit hokey.
What are you doing on this blog anyhow? Shouldn’t you dorks be busy figuring out the simplest equation to cut right angles on a circle?

Sr Citizen Dawg…..I do not take offense to your assessment. However, coming from someone who probably wears Depends and drinks Metamucil on game day, I have to wonder about you. If you can’t stand the heat then stay out of the kitchen. Sorry you cannot face the fact that UGA will suck this year. Cox will suck like a Stewart Avenue street walker….not that I know first hand. I’m glad that the Techies are going back into the Lone Ranger disguise mode. Dogs will prevail, ABC wants OK STate as that is the conference which they represent. If it was CBS, it would be the same on the UGA side. The story line here is whether or not the Dogs can handle all this hype and play UGA football. It is on the road, it is hostile, it is like any other road game we play so who cares. Just do the job and we will get our repsect. Go dogs

To all the Tech fans everywhere. YOU suck and the ACC is irrelevant. Your pay back is coming and you know it. Good Luck to Joe Cox and the team in Stillwater Saturday. It’ll be a tough game for him to break in with but I have confidence he’ll do well and handle the pressure just fine. It is in the Dawgs and Tech’s interest for the handing out of bowl games and higher rankings to pull for the other in-state team. Some fans cannot bring themselves to do that, I don’t consider myself to be in that group.

As for the game, I tend to go back and forth. Half the time, I get worried at what the media is saying, and then the other half, I am convinced that there’s no way we can lose.
No matter what happens, I’m so glad to finally be getting the season underway, it’s been a long 11 weeks since I started my countdown.
By the way, Tech and other opposing fans, the redneck stereotype is really getting old. I wouldn’t be caught dead at Wal-Mart due to numerous factors, but for the main reason that they support evil dictators and that they do not provide adequate safety for their employees – then fail to accept responsibility for their death.
I’ll be attending the Alabama/Virginia Tech game due to a free ticket, but my thoughts will be with the Dawgs all day!

We have all been frustrated with WM but, I want to see the defense this year with almost everyone back plus Owens and more speed at LB and in the defensive backfield. Still getting blitzkrieged? Time for a change.
The game in Stillwater depends on a lot of factors but one is key. Pass rush from the DE spot. If Washington can get rush on the edge, this could be trouble for OSU.
I still think he will have some success slowing them down but I don’t think we can completely stop them.

You can trust that every OK State player and fan understands and respects the long tradition that GA brings to Stillwater on Friday. We aspire to be a top notch program like the one you have and we are hoping that Saturday’s game will be the start of that.
Irregardless of what the press or a few OSU fans might be saying the majority of us Cowboy fans realize what a challenge Saturdays game is going to be and that it will be a true indication of whether OSU football team has arrived and can live up to the expectations that has been cast upon it.
Don’t ever believe for a second that the OSU football team is underestimating or even thinks that GA is the underdog in this game because I promise you they aren’t. If you were to ask most longtime OSU fans if they expect their team to win, the honest answer would be no they hope they will. We have been through many seasons with high expectations and have never achieved, so don’t kid yourself GA fans, OSU hopes to beat GA, but do we expect to – NO. We always feel like the underdog, always…..
You ask why, well when I was at OSU, we had coaches named, Jimmy Johnson, Dave Wannstedt, Larry Coker, Butch Davis, etc and a running back named Sanders backing up a guy named Thomas and we still lost to Nebraska & Oklahoma – so its ingrained
I can assure you that for the few GA fans that will go to Stillwater, you will meet a very knowledgable and respectful fanbase that is hoping to beat the Dawgs. Should we lose the game, we hope for a well fought great game, should we win the game, we will continue on through our season, hoping to win our other games.
Quite frankly we have never lived up to the expectations before

I love it how everyone hates announcers that say anything remotely negative about their team, even calls on the field (heck, I am a Gator fan and we do it all the time).
That said, I think the Dawgs will do better than people think on Saturday. I mean, is OSU’s defense any good? What makes people believe OSU will stop Georgia. OSU’s defense wasn’t particularly good last year either. My guess is that UGA does enough on offense and maybe creates a few turnovers on D to win by 10. Good Luck Dawgs.

Well, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit was on 680 radio saying dawgs will leave Stillwater with an upset victory.
Well, Herbstreit’s a smart football guy, and I hesitate to disagree with him. However, lets put his predicitons in perspective.
In 2007, he emphatically stated that D-1AA Appalachian State “didnt deserve to be on the same field with Michigan.”
Link:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjxxFpd18fs&feature=related
Aterall, Michigan had their star QB, WR, and RB all forging the NFL Draft to come back for their Senior year to to try to win a NC for Michigan.
The result was one of the biggest upsets in college football history.
