Predicting Saturday’s TV story line easy as ABC

Considering the preseason crowning of Oklahoma State as this year’s Cinderella team in college football, I was already expecting ABC’s coverage of Saturday’s game in Stillwater to be heavy on Cowboys hype and ready with a story line about Georgia being the Pokes’ first step in a magical season.

You know the drill. Okie State has all those offensive stars and plays television’s favorite style of offense. Georgia lost all its star power from last year and its defense is suspect. Kirk Herbstreit of ESPN’s “Game Day” even made reference recently to the Dogs “limping” into Stillwater. And he wasn’t just talking hamstrings.

Besides all that, ABC loves the Cowboys, and Saturday’s opener will be OSU’s sixth straight regular season game to be televised by the alphabet network.

Then came the topper: I saw that the ABC crew for the game, slated to kick off at 3:36 p.m. Eastern, will have Sean McDonough on play-by-play, Matt Millen as analyst and Holly Rowe on the sideline.

McDonough is easily my least favorite college football commentator who doesn’t work for Fox Sports. I wasn’t a big fan to start with, dating from his calls of some Braves games back in the early ’90s when he was working baseball, but I wrote him off after the way his coverage of the 2005 game between the Dogs and Vandy crossed the line. A touchdown reception by Georgia’s Bryan McClendon was reviewed by the instant-replay official, and despite the fact that McDonough seemed to think the call clearly should be overturned, it was instead upheld. McDonough whined about it the rest of the game.

Looks like it’ll be a good day to turn down the sound on the TV and listen to Scott Howard and Eric Zeier on the radio.

Does anyone wonder why Matt Millen would be a color commentator on a nationally televised game by one of the big networks? He was an abysmal failure in Detroit and obviously knows very little about talent levels. ABC could have done much better than this pairing.

first of all, georgia grad, surely you’re not one(a grad of UGA, that is)..and if so, i am ashamed to say that i am too…or to put it on words that you would understand, i are one too..did you even read what you were typing. and exactly where did you learn to spell???

second, of course ABC is going to be pulling for okie-dokie state. if they lose, or should i say WHEN they lose, poor ole ABC isn’t going to have their Cinderella story any longer. and bill, i agree with you on sean mcdonough.. heck, i was expecting brent musberger, whom i can’t stand, but i think i would much rather listen to him that mcdonough…guess i’ll have the radio on also…

still trying to de-code georgia grads blog.. i’m really stumped on that one…

They will all be surprised by how well Joe Cox can throw the ball. They will all be surprised by the number of receivers he will throw to. This is not going to be for the faint of heart. Anyone who thinks so is delusional.

Hey “Georgia Grad”….with your grammar and spelling errors you probably are a UGA graduate. What a STOOGE you are. After reading your post again, I have to conclude that you probably did not graduate high school. Of course you fit right in with most UGA fans……uneducated, pot-bellied, PBR drinking, chain smoking rednecks. The Doggies will be lucky to go 7-5 this year with 6-6 more likely. Now get off the library computer. Others are waiting to use it, MORON!

So what’s it going to be this time if UGA gets waxed Saturday? The press was all against us? The refs made almost all the calls against the Dawgs? Our best player was hurt? Our offensive line was too young, but wait till next time? The defense wasn’t ready, and Martinez needs to go? The only good thing about an Okie State victory will be that nine months from Saturday, there will be no little Dawgies born to carry on the witless barking and the idiotic chest-thumping.

A techster telling me to smoke another doobie? Coming from someone who is the home of Reuben Houston and Joe Hamilton? A team that actually wants the Doobie Brothers to perform at halftime of home games?

Get a life and stop with the 5 year old name calling. You and all the other Tech idiots keep dreaming about UGA drifting off into oblivion. It won’t happen.

Also, GT fans have had their first chance to speak up about our rivalry in a long time, so congrats on winning last year and on getting a quality coach. Still, the fact is that GT fans are far more rare, as evidenced by their need to use UGA articles that aren’t even discussing GT to get their word across. Johnson was a smart hire because the option offense will allow Tech to compete on the field even when they can’t win the recruiting competition in state. Still, don’t count on any winning streaks against the Dawgs.
