UGA quarterback-turned-broadcaster Buck Belue thinks the Dogs’ best shot at beating Oklahoma State is to come out as the aggressor on offense.
“None of this 3-and-out stuff in the first quarter by being conservative,” he writes. “That spells trouble. It’s one of those ‘Think 30’ situations. The Cowboys offense is loaded and dangerous. Got to expect they will score some points. So, think 30. As in, we need to score 30 points to win.”
Belue suggests Georgia let QB Joe Cox “throw it around” in the first half and “maybe get a big play or two and set the tone. Oklahoma State’s secondary got torched last season. New [defensive coordinator] and some new faces and that’s another reason to test them. … Hit ’em with some big pass plays and get them focused on rushing the passer … then start dialing up a steady dose of running plays.”
Do you really really like me?
Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald has an amusing quote from Geno Atkins about teammate Jeff Owens of blogging and Twittering fame. “He speaks his mind about everything and he always has a comment about everything. Sometimes it can get annoying. `What do you think about this? What you do think about this?’ He asks the same question over and over again.
`Do you like me?’
`Yes, I like you.’
‘Why do you like me?’”
I get the feeling Jeff has sports talk radio in his future after he finishes playing on Sundays. Or maybe he’ll become the male Oprah.
Preseason superlatives
The UGA student paper, The Red and Black, offers up its preseason superlatives, including:
Most Likely to Do an A.J. Green Impression: Orson Charles. As in have a huge impact as a freshman.
Says the R&B: “Charles, the 6-foot-3, 230-pound tight end, looks to have a better shot at replicating Green’s monstrous first-year campaign than [freshman wide receiver Marlon] Brown does (particularly because Green’s still around). Charles will be worked into creative offensive schemes, split out as a receiver and a passing threat on both big plays and in red zone opportunities. Don’t be surprised if Charles is in charge of the Georgia tight end spot real quick, and in a really big fashion.”
Curran on being snubbed
David Hale’s Bulldogs Blog has a bunch of quotes concerning Rennie Curran, including what the conference’s top returning tackler thinks about being left off many preseason All-SEC lists.
Says Curran: “It definitely gives you a little bit of motivation to know that people might not respect you as much as you think they should, but at the end of the day, you’re just trying to win those games. If the offense is doing well, the defense is doing well and we’re winning games, that respect is going to come. … We can’t expect to get respected when my defense isn’t producing and people are getting 40 points on us. That’s how it works.”
Dogs No. 6 in five-year rankings
College Football News has crunched a bunch of stats and compiled a listing of the top football programs over the past five years. It’s topped by USC, followed by Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio State and Florida. Georgia comes in No. 6. Essentially, they say Mark Richt’s program has done “everything but” win a national championship.
Everything but. You know it’s got to rankle Richt to hear his head coaching career summed up that way.
My money still says he changes that.

Sounds like Buck has a good game plan. Now if the Dawgs can execute on offense and keep pressure on Zac.
Saw some interviews with Jeff Owens at the SEC Media Days.
Great personality. Funny guy. Good to have him back.
I also believe that Coach Richt will win a National Championship with the Georgia Bulldogs.

No reason to feel diss’d when the defense gave up as many points as the Dawgs did last year….after all, it doesn’t matter how many tackles you made, if the offenses are still getting first downs and scoring touchdowns.
That’s when you shut up, put your mouth piece in, snug up those chin straps, and GATA.

I’m sure ramble will be along in a few after picking his nose and tell us what the powerful Tech program has done, other than beat ( gift wrapped) their in state rival for the first time in 8 years and getting blown out by LSU’s worst team in 5 years 38-3. Is it Sept. 5th yet? Dog gone but I’m ready to watch me some UGA football. Buck is right on the money take it to them hard, take it to them early and it to them often till they get that Hawaii kind of feeling. I expect them to do about as well as they did in 2007 with the streak going unbroken against supposed offensive powerhouses like Boise, ASU and Hawwaii.
The Daily Oklahoman had a commentator state that their defensive line is faster than our offensive line due to our line being so large compared to theirs. Boy are they in for a surprise when the figure out that our “O” line is not only bigger than their “D” line, but faster to boot.

Richt is just a few lucky breaks away from a NC. Buck has a sound gameplan, but don’t be too sure they will score on us with ease. Early season games favor a good defense over a good offense, so I say we get up by two scores and then run all day. Hope im not citing strategy, but i do remember seeing an underthrown flea flicker to start g-day. Could be a great first playcall if cox can hit green in stride.

I disagree with Buck on this one… He knows a lot more about football than I do, I just have a difference of opinion.
When he says aggressive on offense, I think too many times last year… we tried to hit the home run deep pass. I’m in favor of SOME of that, but with the offensive line and running backs… I’d like to see us run the ball, throw short and intermediate passes A LOT and throw some screens. In other words, NOT an aggressive offense.
I agree with him that shooting for 30 points, makes sense, but you can do that without throwing the ball all over the field and playing ball control. If we score 27 and keep their offense off the field… we have a good shot to win more than if we score 30 with a couple of turnovers and putting our D out there for a lot of minutes.
If, by aggressive, Buck means that we should throw a 15 yard pass on 1st or 2nd down often… I agree 100%. We can have a 40 yard play in a number of ways, not just chucking it long.
Try selling out a 55,000 seat stadium.....

Cheez!! Your name should be Ray Ban. Have any of you people heard of The Refrigerator? Of course you have and you know he played for Clemson and was drafted by the Bears. Jeff could be close to him in size. Just before his first start with the Bears, the commentators set up a sequence discussing the Fridge’s flab size and what a wasted draft that only the defensive coach wanted. Buddy (the D coach) had a camera set up in the locker room before the game and the tv commentators went to it. The team began running out the door toward the field and Buddy with the Fridge lingered. Just before the Fridge ran out, Buddy slapped the top of a 3ft high table and Fridge jumped on it FLATFOOTED AND STANDING! He slapped it again and he went to the floor FLATFOOTED AGAIN. He repeated in quick succession twice more, all inside 8 secs. He had great weight and flab, but underneath he was an athlete who could control his body! No one questioned William Perry’s athleticism anymore, especially since he went in as fullback for a 3-yd TD in the Bear’s Superbowl win. Buddy became the D coach of the NFL and later became an NFL head coach.
Lay off Jeff Owens, you nit. He has a bigger following than Richt.

I’m sorry but I don’t agree with Buck on this. I think the best way to approach this game is to find out if, indeed, our guys are bigger-stronger-faster than their guys. Line it up and run right at ‘em. Sure you throw the ball as part of that – to Samuels, et. al., out of the backfield…to Green, Brown and especially to Mr. Charles. – but the main thing is to determine who the better team is as soon as possible. There’s always time for throwin’ it all over the place, when you need to – they sure will. One of my pet peeves about Donnan was that he would resort to trickery when he didn’t have to. The team would be moving the ball at will and he’d throw in a double reverse or something – we’d lose 15 yards and the drive would be over. I say that our O-line has the potential to dominate them right from the start and, if they do, the Cowboys will be watching their ‘top-ten’ season go down the drain before dark on the Saturday before Labor Day…then you wonder what T Boone’s score prediction will be for their game after that?

I personally would like to see Georgia run an inside – outside rushing game attack against OS and hold the ball for 40+ minutes and keep the OS offense on the sidelines. Let the Dawg OL beat the crap aout of the OS defense. Vince Dooley type football.
Oh yeah, the defense and the special teams show up, perform, and no penalties unless it is for the defense to break up a potential long play completion for a 15 yard penalty instead.

Unfortunately, and I say this as a devout DAWG lover, “putting our D out there for a lot of minutes” has been characteristic of Richt’s era.
So much so that we’re constantly rebuilding, not reloading because the subs don’t get enough game-playing time to be able to stepup the next year without missing a beat. They can’t. We’re always close with folks we should blow away like SC, Vandy, Ole Miss (before Houston Nutt), Miss St., etc. I hope I’m wrong, but CMR still calls the plays in the tight and he, folks, is no offensive mastermind! Far from it, his tenure at FSU notwithstanding.

Its funny when something that has been quite obvious for the last few years that some fans dare you to question that something is wrong. The next thing they will ask others is what would you do? I think that question needs to be asked to the guys making the big bucks. I still think the strength and conditioning coach has been on cruise control these last few years. If you need proof just look how our defense was knocked around by inferior teams last year particularly

Oledawg….. That was so comical comparing the blob Jeff Owens to the Refrigerator William Perry. LMAO! Do you have any more outlandish comparisons?

If you know your history, you know why so many Georgia natives bark like dogs, as opposed to donning the White & Gold. Georgia was established as a penal colony – populated with convicts by the British Empire to function as a “buffer colony” between the tobacco-rich Carolinas and the lawless / Spain controlled Florida. The toothless descendants of these convicts can be viewed in Georgia’s numerous mobile parks and packing Sanford stadium during the months of September thru November.

B/c those who “done the White & Gold” are usually not from this country. So good one Reid.

Danny Fraud,
I was there when we made the fat fridge cry like a baby with Butler’s 60 yard FG. The fridge couldn’t hold Owens jockstrap.

Frankly, it is hard to believe that UGA wouldn’t get a noticeably better passrush with the same defensive ends as last year if both Atkins and Owens were in the middle. Together, they are too good and powerful to not free up opportunities for others. Now, here’s hoping I’m right…
