Dogs’ ‘golden era’ … for now

Vince Dooley era commemorated (University of Georgia)

Vince Dooley era commemorated (University of Georgia)

As part of its College Football Preview, out today, USA Today looked at the history of all 120 programs in the Bowl Subdivision and picked the “golden era” for each one.

For some schools, that means going way back (Vandy’s heyday was 1926-1930) while Florida is in the midst of its golden era since Urban Meyer arrived, the paper says.

Alabama’s golden era is pegged as 1961-66, when Bear Bryant went 50-4-1 and claimed three national championships. The Bear also accounted for Kentucky’s golden era, 1949-51, when he went 28-8, took the Wildcats to the Orange, Sugar and Cotton bowls and won the 1950 SEC championship.

Auburn’s prime years were 1955-60, USA Today says, when Ralph “Shug” Jordan went 49-10-2, won the 1957 AP national championship and finished fourth in 1958 with a 9-0-1 record. For Tennessee, the paper opts for the years 1938-40, three consecutive unbeaten seasons under Gen. Robert Neyland, instead of the years when UT won national championships (1951 under Neyland and 1998 under Phil Fulmer).

Poor South Carolina’s so-called golden era is 1979-80, when Heisman winner George Rogers led the Gamecocks to consecutive 8-4 seasons and berths in the Hall of Fame and Gator bowls. What a legacy.

As for Georgia Tech, the paper goes with 1951-53, when the Jackets went 17-1-1 and shared a national championship in 1952. What, a 3-point win over the Dogs last year doesn’t qualify as a golden era? That’ll be news to some Tech fans.

Not surprisingly, USA Today’s choice as UGA’s golden era is 1980-83, when Vince Dooley’s Bulldogs were 43-4-1, Herschel Walker won the Heisman and the undefeated 1980 Dogs took the national championship.

It’s hard to argue with that choice, since Wally Butts’ best years in the 1940s during the Sinkwich-Trippi era, including the 1942 consensus national championship and the undefeated 1946 team that one poll ranked at No. 1, were sandwiched around a couple of mediocre war-years seasons.

Certainly, the Mark Richt era, with two SEC titles, six 10-win Top 10 teams and an 82-22 record so far, could be called the Dogs’ “silver” era. Add a national title to that run and even Dooley loyalists likely would concede the golden era designation with no argument.

I always wondered. What the hell kind of a southern school uses the battle hym of the republic as their fight song anyway? What’s wrong with them?

Actually, Georgia has five – 2 consensus and three from other various polls. Same polling system that tech uses to claim four.

GatorNation: We have two MNC – ‘42 & ‘80. Why all the hate? If we are such a bad program why pull for Georgia Tech? Why are you even on this Board? I am not on the Vandy Board trying to rub it into them. Is it because we have ruined so many Gator seasons over the years – ‘66, ‘76, ‘80, ‘81, ‘85, ‘97, ‘07 , etc. Does it still hurt? If you think this streak of yours is going to continue you are delusional. Richt is here for the long run and he will turn this program into what FSU was in the 1990’s. His coaching record, demeaner, etc. is very similar to Bowden. Bowden had FSU in the Orange Bowl in his first few years just like Richt had us in the Sugar Bowl 3 times in his first 8 years. It took Bowden a while to win a MNC but he eventually got there and it may Richt as long but he will get us there eventually.

Knowshon Moreno ran for 188 yards and Georgia’s defense sacked Florida quarterback Tim Tebow six times in a 42-30 victory.
2007 is that recent enough?

I think it also took UF 90 years to get their first MNC. 1980 doesn’t seem that long ago by comparison.

GatorNation, something has to be bothering you about UGA. So much vitriol and hatred. If I were a Gator fan I would be more proud of what my team has done and is doing than tearing down the other guy. Good natured smacktalk is one thing, that crap that you are spewing is another. To each his own I guess. Take some lessons from Atlanta Gator he talks football and is proud of his school.

gdawginkalamazoo…I am proud of my school. I just think it’s funny how you guys belittle GT and that’s alright. You can dish but you can’t take it. All I’m saying is don’t talk it up until you do something about it. I do believe you guys have a good program but don’t think you the end all be all just yet!!!! It hurts when someone puts you down doesn’t it? You do the same to others and you can’t deny it.

GatorNation, who have I put down? There is a difference between smack talk and hatred. I have fun running smack with the likes of Ramble On! and some the others who are at least good natured about it. Heck I would prefer to sit and tailgate with half these bloggers from all the schools than sit there and spew hatred and put the other guy down. “Never will win, your coach stinks, your school sucks, low academic standards, copy cats, we have more, you have less”…… bunch of crap keep that you keep spewing. I can dish it and I can take it. As I have said before, many times, Tech earned the smack talk rights for the year and they can keep bringing it until we meet again. You guys have it too. Just don’t forget to leave the trash by the keyboard……

Paying the refs off did not give us an extra 39 points there UGA Alum93. 49-10. Florida is an elite team, UGA wants to be. Did Florida pay the refs for the last 20 years when the record for UF vs. UGA is 16 wins for Florida and 4 wins for UGA? All your fans are so mad because last year was going to be the National title year yet you know what happened. 3 losses, no good.

**YAWN** These posts of GatorNation might led one to believe FU errr UF might stay perched atop the collegiate football ranks forever. Tsk tsk my lil’ banjo strumming, sister banging, mullet sporting and jort wearing friend. You are atop now and the descent starts now. You’ve no where to go but down. Gators are not invincible and will fail. Will you please return them with your trash talk?

Gator Nation,
Your about as stupid as they come. Glory,Glory is not Georgia’s only fight song.Have you ever heard a tune played by the Georgia band called the Red and Black? It’s been a Georgia fight song as long as
Glory, Glory has, maybe even longer.I guarntee you nobody else plays that. You need to know what your talking about before you post..

As a 1984 U.Ga. graduate, I was at Georgia for each of the 1980-1983 seasons. It was wonderful and spectacular and amazing and unbelievable. We had the best program in the nation during those days, walloping Florida once 44-0 and whipping teams like UCLA, Clemson, California and BYU, among others. The fans barked and Munson growled and the stadium cracked and trembled and shook to its very foundations. I remember the national title and the Heisman and losing so rarely that each loss felt like a death in the family. And remember being so physically ill when Herschel turned pro that I couldn’t go to class for days.

Ah, those were the days. They ruined me for life.

Hope Coach Richt can bring ‘em back for me someday.

ZP, by THAT reasoning, Tech has 6 National Championships….but, who wants to use THAT kind of reasoning?!

UGA_Alum_93, we didn’t share the National Championship in 1917 or in 1928. Why? Does uga ever lose without excuses? You know…like “How much did it cost to pay those refs off?”.

Topp Dogg, I’ll take that bet!

For the record, GT was the first school to win all four of the major bowl games. Damn it! Georgia came in second again! Ya’ll look good in your Silver Era….matches your britches!

1980-1983 were great for UGA. That was UGA’s best era not just in football, but the Athens scene was fantastic then as well with the B-52’s and REM rocking the place.

I think 2002-2005 would have to be a solid second. I was a student at UGA from 2001-2004. Richt’s first few years were really special, and that 2002 season was a special one. And as a fan, you got the impression that the players really layed it on the line for the program, and when they did lose it was by a TD or less. It would have been a blast to be a student at UGA for the 2007 season, but 2006 and 2008 were subpar for me.

There were no consensus champions before 1950. Even if there were, Ohio State would be the 1942 Consensus champion because the only then-existing consensus poll (the AP) voted for them. In fact, in 1942 NO human poll voted for the puppies as national champs.

PS Can you even read the article? GT went “17-1-1 in the SEC during the period,” not overall. Between 1951 and 1952 they were 23-0-1 alone. A two year number of wins total that is only closely matched by a recent two year uga stretch (although they lost some games too).

Moreover, two polls also voted for GT in 1951.
