Who’s most dangerous player Dogs will face?

Georgia’s defense, particularly the more inexperienced members of its secondary, will face a stiff challenge in some of the more heralded offensive stars they’ll come up against this season.

Besides Tim Tebow, who will be the Dogs defense's biggest challenge?

View Results

Loading ... Loading ...
There’s Florida’s Tim Tebow, of course.

But first the Dogs must try to contain Oklahoma State’s high-scoring tandem of quarterback Zac Robinson and receiver Dez Bryant. Also early in the season, a lot of folks are picking the Arkansas game as a potential loss for the Dogs thanks to their quarterback transfer from Michigan, Ryan Mallett. Then there’s LSU’s powerful offense, led by rising QB Jordan Jefferson. And the Dogs are well aware of the big-play potential of Georgia Tech’s triple-option attack with Jonathan Dwyer.

We’ll say it’s a given that Tebow, who’s trying for his second Heisman, is the biggest threat the Dogs defense faces. But besides him, which opposing offensive player do you think will be the most dangerous that Willie Martinez’s unit must handle? Feel free to comment, vote in the poll or both.

Good Morning to all,
I don’t normally post during the day but I’ve posted the following below at night and nobody seems to give me a straight answer so here goes again.
Again, if you’re a tech “fan” and want to only come on here and hate on UGA as opposed to actually discussing CFB in a civil manner please answer some of the questions below
When was the last time Tech won their conference? UGA?
When was the last time Tech went to a BCS bowl? UGA?
When was the last time Tech won a major bowl game? (By major I mean the Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, Orange or pre BCS Cotton, to save u some time 1990 does not count since it was the Citrus)
What’s the series record?
How many times has CMR beaten Tech in a row before last year? What about if we include FSU?
How many times has each team finished in the top ten of ANY poll this decade?
What’s the winning percentage of each team this decade?
If you pull for Tech and want to hate on UGA, what personal ties do you have with the actual school.
ACC questions since they’re so underrated and the SEC is so overrated
How many at large BCS bids has each conference received?
How many BCS bowls has each conference won? Compare the ACC’s total BCS wins to UGA’s alone or Mark Richt’s alone.
How many BCS championships has the each conference won?
I know you’ve said time and again how Tech and the ACC are awesome and UGA and the SEC are overrated so I’m sure the correct answers to the questions above will support your argument
For the record I was accepted to Tech and UGA and graduated magna cum laude. I personally know several Tech grads and true fans. They are smart classy people that I respect and admire, or in short nothing like 90% of the Tech posters on here.
It’s really strange how guys like G&G, M, and yellow fuzz never seem to answer these questions. Strange.

Looks like UGAgrad08 has some issues he is attempting to address! LOL

One victory be his rival and he writes a book about how UGA used to be better. Is that not the same thing Tech fans have used against UGA fans for years. I was in doubt that Tech had truly turned the corner in this battle with their in state foe…but if UGA fans are concerned enough to rant the way UGAgrad08 felt compelled…then I guess Tech has certainly closed the gap.

Go Buckeyes!

Don’t forget that while Jonathan Dwyer was running for nearly 9 yards a carry last year at sanford % son stadium at the cesspool in athens, Roddy Jones averaged 14.7 yards a carry.

This year Tech is adding R-Jr. Anthony Allen, who is a Louisville transfer who set the all time rushing record at Louisville in his freshman and sophomore seasons.

These three are going to run through ugag’s secondary like knife cutting through warm butter. They are going to tear ugag a new one.

45-42…glad it STILL hurts so bad…and it is only the Beginning.

Thanks to God and Greyhound, ugag’s favorite Tech coach is gone forever. You pitiful pups are missing chan gomer gailey already.

There is a new sheriff in town…and his #1 mission is to kick ugag’s sorry arses on a yearly basis…so far so good. LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

Being a UGA grad and die hard fan it kills me to have to say Paul Johnson is our biggest threat to defend. Alot of UGA fans are in denial expecting Tech to lose another 7 in a row. But Paul Johnson isn’t Chan Gailey. This is a different situation. Tech will continue to beat us like O’Leary’s teams did. Hopefully Johnson won’t stick around long, but while he’s hear I think we’re in trouble against Tech. Johnson has won everywhere he’s been and already turned Tech around in 1 year. I just hope Martinez gets these guys to tackle this year or it’s gonna be a long year.

Cool cowboy, how about LSU, how about ASU, how about every team on schedule, year in and year out. How about your team a couple of years ago, how about 90% of the teams which we play we beat 2 out of 3 times. Regrets that we don’t get to play Baylor, SMU and A&M, but if you check back you will see that we beat them when we played them. You can add Texas to that list also. In about 10 days all this banter will be done, and the teams will settle it on the field.

Dez Bryant did look super studly when I watched him some last year. Who knows about the rest, but Ok State is the first opponent and Dawgs have a lot to prove. Bryant won’t be able to do his thing if the Dawgs get pressure though, and I think they’ll do a better job than last year. The defense is due to do some damage. Owens and Atkins are beasts in the middle, and nobody probably realizes how much playing without Owens hurt the Dawgs when their line was thin in playmakers last year.

HURRA-CRANE

I see UGA losing 2 games this year. With that being said, those two will NOT be Tech or Okie State. Okie State may be the most overrated team in the country this preseason. UGA has had months to prepare for this game while concentrating most of that time on their defense. You will not see the missed tackles, penalties, or lack of leadership from last year’s defense. UGA returns 14 starters from the ‘07 team that smoked Okie State. This is will be a great start for another 10 win season for CMR.

Johnny Test

Large Orange is not a Tenn. fan… Tech fan is a poor disguise.

The simple answer to the Question is Tim Tebow because of the cast of characters around him. You can’t game plan to stop Tebow. Too many other threats. Double team Dez, put lots of pressure on the other QBs mentioned. Dwyer is another tough one. He is really good and if you focus too much on him you will get hurt somewhere else. I’d say Tebow then Dwyer.

AceDawg

10:41 am

Yes, Ok State fans, you should be excited about your team, but don’t put all your marbles in one basket expecting to win your opener. Truthfully, UGA is loaded with far more talent between the two sides of the ball, and it would still be an upset for OSU to win. Not that they can’t, but it would be an upset. UGA’s defense has been solid for more than 10 years. Our worst year last year still put us as a top 25 defense. We had almost the most penalties in the nation and about the fewest amount of turnovers forced, but opportunities were there, and our offseason has been geared towards improving those things. Don’t think top 10 recruiting classes year in and year out ever leaves the Dawgs cupboard bare. All the same, our O-Line should dominate the Ok State D-Line and give us greater possession time to limit the Ok St offense, assuming the Ok State offense plays well.

Folks, Ok state is not Hawaii. Hawaii failed the “bus test” as soon as Jimmy Johnson got a look at them that night, he knew UGA would destroy them. Ok state recruits well and has a good OL and weapons. The key to the game is slowing them down enough by scoring with ball control.

Unfortunately, I believe this will be a nail biter shootout that will cause blood pressures to rise throughout the south.

UGA’s biggest threat? Themselves, as usual.

Jonathan Dwyer is their biggest threat “on the field”. They will have Roddy Jones’ 200+ yard effort from last year in the back of their minds, and Dwyer will shred them like a wet paper sack (their defense is normally a dry paper sack, thank you Willie). Plus they’ll be trying to hard to not lose consecutive games to GT, they’ll all be tense and make mistakes. Last year was frankly a shootout, and could have gone either way. But let’s be honest Dawg fans, the reason it was a shootout from UGA’s side, was because of Stafford, MoMass, and Moreno and they’re all in the NFL. The reason it was a shootout from GT’s side, was because of Dwyer, Roddy, Cox, Nesbitt, Willie Martinez, poor tackling, and all those things are still here for this year’s game. No shootout this year, a blowout.

King Gator…not this year, it seems.

SuperB has it right. I think we should be afraid of Penn Wagers’ lazy eye that seems to miss obvious Florida penalties (See Spike laying on top of Knowshon first play last year screaming in his face…which is a personal foul in every game)

Big 12 is way way way over-rated and nobody over there plays defense. Our Defense will be better than last year…and certainly the best D a Big 12 team has faced, save Florida’s in the BCS Championship game. 60 points a game is easy when there is nobody slowing you down.

I am most worried about Arkansas and UT. Petrino is a good coach–in college. Eric Berry is good.

UGA Grad ‘08, just wondering; did you take a single breath during your little survey? I love how all the questions slant in favor of the pups…it’s cool, you’re dawg fan/grad (ANYONE can say they’re a grad). I have ONE question for you- IF uga is such an elite team, then WHY have they ONLY won one national championship during all these years?

superDawg, you’re a pissy little man aren’t ya? We have MUCH more to hang on to than last years victory…..but, like the little brat you appear to be, it has proven to be futile to explain….go get yourself a lollipop and do what you do best.

UGA 92, as a Tech fan, I’d love to agree with you! However, I believe that CPJ will make it a more fun game to watch (From Tech’s perspective) in that we’ll ALWAYS feel like we have a chance to win, but CMR has proven to be a good coach in these years at uga…I just look forward to this game becoming competitive again! As it should be!

Denver Dog, you continue to prove yourself to be, quite, the classy poster! One would need a shovel to dig down to your level….. that thin air has had a MOST adverse effect on your thoughts!

DawginLex, I agree with your 10:48 post… Ok. St. is going to be a tough win….but, the dawgs should be fine.

I believe the dawgs most dangerous opponent this season COULD be the press….if they ignore all the naysayers out there, focus on unifying the ‘team’, pick Joe Cox up and help him help them…then, they could be a formidible opponent any given week!

Cool Cowboy. Our defense was admittedly lousy last year…but I don’t think we came close to allowing the 500yrds a game of offense you clowns gave up–and we play in the best conference! Y’all finished 4th in an also-ran conference. I don’t think you are in any position to cast any dispersions.

Hopefully T Boone Pickens bought some defensive players to go with his new stadium.

I think that UGA will lose three of the four games discussed. Richt can’t and won’t continue to win 10 games a season. I see Tech, LSU, OSU and Auburn (yes Auburn) beating UGA this year. No SEC campionship game, but still a good bowl bid due to reputation and a win for a final record of 9 and 4 with a 20th final ranking. Richt keeps job of course but Willie gets the blame and the boot.

i’m a dawg fan, but why can’t folks just answer the question and discuss instead of acting like morons. they’re all dangerous and if we can’t hold the line, it will be painful. i think we’ll definitely surprise ok state with a late field goal to win….or as our first points on the board.

David Granger

Year in, year out the most dangerous foe the Dawgs face is Coach Richt’s tendency to have the defense blitz in the most dumbass situations you can imagine. I don’t know if Georgia telegraphs it, or if the opposing QB’s pick it up extraordinarily well, or if our “stay back” coverage scheme is flawed…but in just about any big game since Richt got there, we have been hurt when we blitz on third and long. The UT “hobnail boot” game is a perfect example: We take a lead late, and then let Tennessee come straight down the field and score…with two critical first downs coming when we blitz on third and long…the opposing QB hits that little quick “safety valve” receiver over the middle, who gets to the secondary before being caught. We came back and beat ‘em at the end, but we seem to do this every year.
I hope that…when Richt calls a blitz in a stupid situation…Rennie Curran just says “Coach can blow that out his ass…We’re rushing four, playing tight short coverage, and deep prevent. Y’all blame it on me…I’ll run the bleachers.”

The comparison to Boise is ridiculous. OSU plays in a BCS conference and recruits way better athletes than Boise. This year is no exception, as OSU has three potential first round picks (RB-Hunter, REC-Bryant & OL-Okung) along with a top five QB (Robinson) and very strong OL. Despite its weakness, the defense has 2-3 potential NFL players, including a talented shut down CB named Perish Cox. Also, their DE’s and LB’s are very solid. The middle of the OSU’s D-line will be its biggest weakness (due to size) despite returning experience.

Second, OSU annually plays OU, Texas, A&M and Tech which have the same type athletes as UGA. OSU will be expecting great athletes on UGA’s side of the ball but won’t be intimidated by speed, size or strength like Boise.

Last, Boise came to Athens as a seven point UNDERDOG while OSU is FAVORED at home by six points (See Vegas Odds). Last time I checked, Vegas is in the business of picking winners and has no allegiance to schools.

My advice to all you UGA homers comparing Boise to OSU, hold on to your money and stay away from Vegas.

You sir, take the prize for the most ridiculous statements on here.

“I want all the Cowpoke fans to keep talking about Dez Bryant. On Sat. Sept. 5th he’ll be the 5th best WR on the field behind A.J. Bryant, Marlon Brown, Michael Moore and Rantavius Wooten!” Green is an excellent WR, but all the others are completely unproven, especially FR Brown (and I don’t give a rip how many stars he had as a recruit, Bryant was a 5* AND has backed it up).

Here’s what’s going against Cowpokes:

1.) Too much hype, without enough track record to support it.-Lots of hype, track record has to start somewhere, might as well be here.
2.) Too much hype over Robinson and Bryant. – Robinson was the 4th ranked passer in the country last year, Bryant top-ranked WR and I don’t want to hear about Big 12 defenses. They played 4 teams that were in the Top 5 when we played them.
3.) T. Boone Pickens – putting too much pressure to succeed. – BS. Gundy is his hand-picked coach.
4.) New stadium – too many distractions around the facilities. Not that big a deal. The outdoor portion of the stadium and 95% of the amenities were already in place all last season. Only thing new in the stadium itself is that the suites are complete and new video boards this year.
5.) Playing a well tested top tier SEC team who is in their head given what happened 2 years ago. Well-tested? Failed most of those tests miserably last year, didn’t they? In their head? There are only maybe 4-5 guys that will start for OSU that even made it into the game two years ago.
6.) Mike Gundy is in over his head and is starting to feel the weight of enormous expectations. – What pressure? He just signed a new 7-year, $15M contract.
7.) CMR is off da hook playing in other teams stadiums. Four losses in 8 years! Wow!!! – Richt’s road record IS impressive, only intelligible statement you made.
8.) Okie’s Defense – or better yet, what defense? – I especially love Nos. 8 & 9. You assume that OSU’s defense will be the SAME as last year, yet UGA’s will be “resurgent”. Laughable.
9.) Resurgent UGA Defense. Make NO mistake, UGA’s defense will be much improved over last year and on Sept. 5th they’re going to prove it. – LSU: 497 yards, GT: 428 yards. What defense?
10.) Did I mention that Okie St. is over-hyped and overrated? – See above.

Well I’ll answer these questions

1) When was the last time Tech won their conference? UGA? Tech has won 2 conference titles in the last 19 years. UGA has won 2 in the last 26 years. In Tech’s last 26 years in the SEC, it won 5 titles.

2) When was the last time Tech went to a BCS bowl? UGA? Congrats, you’ve been to three, although only one was a win over a decent opponent. When was the last time UGA won a national championship?

3) When was the last time Tech won a major bowl game? (By major I mean the Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, Orange or pre BCS Cotton, to save u some time 1990 does not count since it was the Citrus)

Well aside from the fact you arbitrarily include the pre BCS cotton bowl in there, despite that the Cotton bowl’s prestige was all but gone by the mid 80s, uga has been to three major bowls in the last 25 years, while tech has been to none. Both programs are relatively mediocre in that regard.

4) What’s the series record?

Seeing as neither school agrees on the answer to this question, I definitely don’t know the answer either.

5) How many times has CMR beaten Tech in a row before last year? One, if you exclude Chan Gailey coached teams.

6) How many at large BCS bids has each conference received?

I’m glad you can bask in the success of two of the teams that beat the crud out of you last year.

Reality Check, the relevant has been brought over from a different discussion regarding Tech being relevant or not. The word being tossed around on this blog is elite…. uga has been a VERY relevant team these past ten years and I do not discount their schedule. I have said, many times, that they are a team to be reckoned with….but, I don’t think a team achieves ‘elite’ status without national championships. Doesn’t matter how hard you run the race…if you don’t cross the finish line….you don’t win. uga has developed a strong team, but they aren’t winning any of the big races. For the record, I don’t consider the dawgs a second tier program….never said it. They’re a good team….just not elite.

They’ve done well with their team considering their schedule. No way, do I belittle this. However, without winning the National Championship (EVERY team should begin the season shooting for this), uga cannot be considered ‘Elite’. I’m a Tech fan first, college football fan second; as a Tech fan, I’ll defend our legacy in this sport…. we’ve had better runs….but, as you’ve pointed out, we’re on the right path to returning to a place of prominance. Hey Dawgs, what you need to realize is that the Cowboys are a COMPLETELY different club than the one that played in Athens two years ago. Robinson was not yet the starter at QB, only Okung played on the offensive line, and Dez was starting his first game as a true freshman. The entire team is much better at every position and our depth is substantially improved. This is all evidenced by having Vegas setting the line at -6. How many games in the SEC are the Dawgs placed at +6?? Yes we have question marks on the defensive side along with a new coordinator. But we also have many more athletes on that side of the ball as well. This may be the year that cynics have been dreaming about.

Hey Dogtards,

Your stupidity has no bounds.

1. UGA has won 2 conference titles in the last 7 years. Tech won a conference title in 1990( almost 2 years ago!) and kind of sorta won one in 1998. UGA has without question been the more relevant program in this decade so get your head out of your ass.

2. Bowl committees are the ones that select who UGA plays. At least UGA wins their bowl and doesn’t choke on a big fat one like Tech had done against LSU and that powerhouse FRESNO STATE! UGA’s last National Title was in 1980, but it was UNDISPUTED. Tech’s on the other hand was a CO-National Title with Colorado and a Tie with a VERY mediocre North Carolina team.

3. UGA- 3 BCS Bowl games in the last 7 years. Tech-Zero. Tech’s the one that is mediocre here.

4. It doesn’t matter if Tech fans want to include the games from 1943 and 1944, UGA STILL owns the all-time series.

5. The Chan Gailey losses count moron, he was Tech’s head coach.

6. If you mean to imply that Florida has beaten us regularly, then you are correct. But UGA has owned LSU but large margins that last 3 meetings between the two teams.

The cowgirls are going down and that’s a given. The weak 12 has had their arses handed to them numerous times by the SEC – check it out.
Here’s a question for everyone out there regarding the GayTurds – have the reptiles ever had an UNDEFEATED season??? Well, UGA sure has. When will the crocs have an undefeated season? This decade? Nope. The next? Nope.

Dantard –

“Your stupidity has no bounds.”

Classy and clever.

“1. UGA has won 2 conference titles in the last 7 years.”

Yeah and you didn’t win one the 19 years before then. Awesome.

“UGA has without question been the more relevant program in this decade so get your head out of your ass.”

Never said you guys weren’t better for the past decade. My point was that both programs were relatively mediocre recently. Well, uga has pretty much always been mediocre except for a 3-5 year stretch in the very early 80s, a blip on the radar in the 90s, and then the recent Richt stretch (which is impressive, but Herschel aside the only thing you guys have really done of note).

“Bowl committees are the ones that select who UGA plays. ”

Did the bowl committee make you lose that game against WV?

“UGA’s last National Title was in 1980, but it was UNDISPUTED. Tech’s on the other hand was a CO-National Title with Colorado and a Tie with a VERY mediocre North Carolina team.”

A 2-loss Colorado team who escaped with a win on a fifth down play. Who cares if it was undisputed? (Which, by the way, it technically wasn’t – a little over half the polls that year voted uga #1. FSU and Nebraska were each voted #1 by one poll, Oklahoma by 2 polls, and Pitt by 5. For example of a real undisputed National Champion see Nebraska in 1995). We still have a Crystal trophy in our trophy case from 1990 – 10 years more relevant than yours.

Using your logic, nobody can claim a national title in 1990 because it was shared. The same would go for 2003, 1997, and 1991 – other years where a title was shared. It happened. Get over it.

“The Chan Gailey losses count moron, he was Tech’s head coach.”

I’m not saying they don’t, but Richt is 1-1 against well-coached Tech teams.

“If you mean to imply that Florida has beaten us regularly, then you are correct. But UGA has owned LSU but large margins that last 3 meetings between the two teams.”

Alabama genius. No chance you guys ever beat them with Saban.

I think Dez Bryant will be the most dangerous player (other than Tebow) that UGA will play against this season. According to the media (who admittedly aren’t very smart) Bryant is the best WR in the nation. Having seen AJ Green on more than one occasion, I would argue that AJ is as good as Bryant, if not better. But I’m obviosly biased ( not that the media is impartial).

what they forgot to mention is the ground game that OSTATE has and will use anyway they want too….K.Hunter, Tosten, and Johnson can all run it and we can run it all day long so if you want to stop the pass you better be ready for the run…..we have had one of the most balanced offenses in the COUNTRY the last two years and last time we came to Georgia our offense wasnt as set as it is now….and if you want to bring up the Oregon games lets talk about the cheap hits they gave Dez and Z. Rob and go from there….all I know is that this will be a good game and I am looking forward to it
