Wear and tear of August hits Dogs

As we near the end of the second week of preseason practice, this is the time when the grind starts to wear on the players and lots of nagging injuries show up. It wasn’t particularly surprising that Thursday’s practice was what Mark Richt deemed the worst so far.

I’m sure it didn’t help the mood at the Woodruff Practice Fields that tailback Caleb King has to sit out a week to 10 days with one of the more serious of the team’s many hamstring problems. It’ll definitely be a setback for King and for the tailback competition overall. About the best spin you can put on it is that at least it wasn’t the back who had the best day in Wednesday’s scrimmage who got hurt.

Now it’ll be up to King to stay patient and committed to getting back on track, and Richard Samuel needs to prepare mentally for possibly being the starting tailback. No fumbles, in other words. And more reps for shifty little Carlton Thomas will pay off in the long run.

Quintin Banks (Georgia Sports Communications)

Another disheartening development was backup safety Quintin Banks injuring his right knee after missing most of last season with two injuries to his left knee. Fortunately, this one wasn’t as serious, and he’s expected to be out only three weeks. Starter Reshad Jones has been out a week with his own hamstring problem, so that’s not helping. But at least this will mean that hard-hitting redshirt freshman Bacarri Rambo will get more work.

This is the point at which the current team’s much vaunted on-field leadership that we’ve heard about all summer has to step up. As Richt said on Georgiadogs.com, “We’ll see how the leaders handle the adversity of the day and we’ll see how they come back tomorrow.”

Quarterback Joe Cox, reputedly one of the team’s most vocal leaders, said, “it’s already been addressed. We talked about it right after we ran.”

It’s three weeks until Stillwater. One bad day of practice and a few relatively minor injuries shouldn’t prevent the 2009 Dogs from finishing the drill, as the saying goes.

Habersham Dawg,

Tavaress King has been doing very well in practice according to Coach Richt. He’s running smooth routes, he’s got excellent hands, and has great speed. He’ll definitely have an impact on the offense this year and will be one of many “GO TO” receivers that the Bulldogs have at their disposal.

I have noticed no reports in detail about the defense. Are the Dawgs just practicing offensive plays and looking for offensive players? Has Martinez been forgiven and a non DC?

One more thing…your team gets way too many injuries in practice. Either your guys are being pushed too hard in August or (more likely in my humble opinion) they are not being pushed hard enough by your strength & conditioning coaches in the offseason…

See you on the Flats in November!

Top Dawg,

Coach Richt said Shawn Williams has shown improvement throughout camp and continues to step up. However, at this point, he’s behind a number of other safeties on the depth chart. He’ll get some playing time though, but it may not be a lot. However, one never knows what a college football season will bring.

Sorry we have to hear from some ass fault wizard in my town (St. Simons) with the “haha” stuff followed by last year’s tech / DOGS score. You know how techies are; one win and they jump out from under whatever rock they’ve been under for years. We’ll see how the slide rule boys are doing in 5 or 6 weeks. If our guys give it their all every down, then we’re loooking at a pretty fine season. Coastal Dog.

Soft schedule? Georgia you havent scheduled a game West of the Mississippi for 25 years until last season. While teams like Tennessee play UCLA, Cal , Notre Dame , you guys are opening with Georgia Southern. UF plays FSU as a regular game every year. Dont brag about tough schedules because the Homers in Athens havent been doing so until last year!

Don’t confuse our 38-3 loss to LSU with your 31-0 loss to Alabama or 49-10 loss to Florida.

You like to quote stats but ignore the one that matters the most……. the Dawgs have won 7 out of the last 8 versus the Jackets, and that’s not competitive by any standard. Grant Field will become Georgia Field when the Dawgs come to Atlanta late this fall……..

What was that ???

georgia people suck and they are extremely delusional. The ones I know are spoiled rotten and can’t stand it that TECH, Florida and Alabama all have the upper hand going into this season (based on head to head competition last year). OSU will beat you down by 20 and USC by 10. I hope you have to beat us the last week of the season to get into a bowl game. I will buy a ring commemorating it!

I’m from VA and don’t have a dog in the GT vs. UGA fight personally, but you’d think the YJ’s have mistaken their team for the 2nd coming of Jesus based on a 3 point win vs. UGA last year…a win in which they still gave up FORTY TWO POINTS!! Makes as much sense as a football bat.

GT and PJ need to come out this season, avoid a sophmore slump this year, and have a few more productive years, and beat UGA a few more times prior to being annointed the next best thing since sliced bread. And that’s not going to be easy…ACC teams usually don’t fare well against SEC teams, especially over a long period, for a reason!!

Caleb King ain’t King and he now is bust! Another guy who is gonna be a waste and wont pan out. Last year he didn’t even know how to block properly as the year before. The strength and conditioning coach at UGA needs to take a hike. The summer has been a waste for lower body conditioning for the dawgs. Florida is gonna kill us ! Bank on it!
