101 Reasons to Be a UGA Fan, Part 5

University of Georgia

University of Georgia

Scrimmages have begun, students have moved into dorms and apartments in Athens, classes at UGA begin on Monday and we’ve got 22 days and change until kickoff of Georgia’s 2009 football season. I’d say it’s a great time of year to be a Dawgs fan, but then that’s the case any time of year. And in celebration of that fact, here’s the conclusion of our list of 101 reasons why it’s great … to be … a Georgia Bulldog!

81. Reggie Ball wore a Tech uniform.

82. “Going back to Athens town.”

83.  The annual performance by the Redcoat Alumni Band.

84. As the late, great Athens Daily News once put it: “Oh, Hot Diggity Dog, Mr. Dooley, You Have Wrecked Ole Tech Again!”

85. Scott Woerner.

86. Being a part of the luckiest 92,746 folks around on a fall Saturday.

87. GATA.

88. Clisby Clark’s “Bulldog Bite.”

89. Bill Stanfill introducing himself to Steve Spurrier at the Gator Bowl.

90. “One and done, baby!”

91. “Between the hoses” at Auburn in 1986.

92. Dooley’s shaved head in 1976.

93. There’s only one “hobnail boot,” and everyone knows who wore it!

94. Great names: “Catfish” Smith, Jiggy Smaha, Happy Dicks, Buzy Rosenberg, Bucky Dilts, Hiawatha Berry, Wycliffe Lovelace.

95. “God is a Bulldog,” as Bulldog legend Dorsey Hill famously noted to Lewis Grizzard when UGA moved to No. 1 in 1980 with the help of a Georgia Tech tie with Notre Dame.

96. Theron Sapp, the Drought-Breaker.

97. Terry Hoage.

98. The Diamond Dogs’ College World Series championship trophy (you won’t find one in Atlanta).

99. Mark Richt.

100. Four-plus decades of Larry Munson.

101. The solo trumpeter in the southwest upper deck.

Special thanks to Steve, Owen, Len, Johnny, Olivia and Van.

Looks like the high directional (easily returned) kickoffs will continue as Richt is quoted as saying… “Bogotay is “getting a lot of distance” on his kicks, Richt said, but “his hang time has been a little erratic.” Walsh “has been more consistent with his hang time,” Richt said. “Both of them have kicked very well.””

Guess they’ll never learn, too bad.

Joe you are dead wrong that the high directional kick being easy to return. Nothing could be further from the truth, that’s why its the generally accepted strategy at all level of football. It’s the kick was supposed to be, and isnt, that is the problem. When it was done correctly, we had just as good of coverage any anyone. This is why we are wasting a meal ticket on bringing in additional competition. To work on doing it correctly. But it’s not to defy the laws of physics or do what statistically nobody else seems to be able to do.

Personally I’d love to see it booted out of the end zone every time. But if it were as easy as that……..other colleges and pro teams would have “learn” too woudn’t they?

Well technically, Tn was over a decade ago. And they have NEVER had easy season openers since. Ever. They just dont do that. Unlike UGA who ALWAYS does.

Is watching them lose 4 games going to show up in your 1001 TN list this year? Again.

If Tech played in the SEC, they would go 5-7 or 6-6 every year. Going to the Independence bowl would be like their Sugar Bowl. 2nd Tier program, JV Football, HS offence etc. The fact that you can still buy 2nd row seats on the 20 yard line weeks before the opener goes to show you what the ACC and the Techies are all about.

AltamahaDawg you overlooked my extreme sarcasm in my “easy to return” comment. One thing is for sure, that scheme has not worked for Georgia consistently enough to stick with it.

Why are they so hard-headed when it comes to this one simple thing? (rhetorical)

#88 – Actually it’s Clisby Clarke (with an ‘e’ – as in Clark-e County). Just thought you’d like to know. Plus all those ‘copycats’ trying to sound like Clisby in those commercials, just ain’t gettin’ it done. Clisby’s an original.

FinanceBuzz , besides our (nearly) annual butt-kicking of the gnats on North Ave., the best thing I have found about being a “Mutt fan” or UGA grad. is when I get to sign and hand out the paychecks of all the Tech grads that work FOR me.

Needless to say that they stopped enjoying the 3 point win a long time ago. I suggest folks like Taint Simons, fool and farthound and the other casual Tech fans do likewise.

There will be just as much red and black in the stands in Grant’s Tomb this year as there will be piss-yellow and white and more black and blue on the Tech sideline.

just ready for that one guy who ranked Joe Cox as the 12th best quarterback in the SEC to realize his own stupidity…. exactly WHICH AU quarterback did he have ranked above Joe Cox? and Jonathan Crompton above our #14…..really?
and this may be a dumb question, but what does GATA stand for??
