Two-minute drill: Two-a-days bring real hitting

Caleb King (ACJ staff)

Targeted today: Caleb King (ACJ staff)

I like this quote in the Bulldogs Blog from defensive end DeMarcus Dobbs after this morning’s first practice with full pads and full contact: “It was a good feeling. Richard Samuel, Caleb King, Dontavius [Jackson], Carlton [Thomas], they all like to run hard, especially when we’re in thud [not full contact] and can’t go to the ground. So it was a nice switchover and a good chance to take them to the ground, execute a little revenge. It was good for us to unleash and play to our full capability.”

A winning decade

Georgia Sports Blog researched what teams had the most overall wins during the past 10 years (1999-2008). In the SEC, Auburn and Tennessee tied for third with 85 wins apiece. Florida was in second place with 93. And the winner? Georgia, with 98 wins.

Honoring a great Dawg

The Greater Augusta Bulldog Club is honoring 88-year-old Dan Magill, who not only built the UGA tennis program into a national power but also was sports information director for years and established the network of Bulldog clubs around the state. The Augusta Chronicle reports Magill will be guest of honor at the Augusta club’s meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Julian Smith Casino. The article notes that Magill was in school at the same time as Frank Sinkwich, Georgia’s first Heisman Trophy winner. “I think he was the greatest ball carrier we ever had,” Magill says. “He could hit the hole faster than anybody we ever had except [Knowshon] Moreno. [Sinkwich] didn’t have the speed of Herschel [Walker] and he didn’t have the strength. But he had what you want in a running back. He could hit the hole fast.

Remembering Georgia’s ‘greatest fan’

In the Athens Banner-Herald, Loran Smith pays tribute to John Henry “Kid” Terrell Jr., who died recently. Says Smith: “Everybody has a Bulldog loyalist they identify as ‘Georgia’s greatest fan.’ I have met countless members of that fraternity. With all due respect to anyone deserving of that sobriquet, I have to grant the ‘greatest’ distinction to my friend Kid Terrell.”

Smith tells how he arranged for Terrell, who also was in school with Sinkwich and Charley Trippi, to be registered at UGA during Herschel Walker’s freshman year. Terrell wasn’t aware of this and when he got an expulsion notice because he never attended any classes, he at first thought it was his son being kicked out until the youngster gleefully pointed out whose name was on the notice. The prank paid off, though, as Terrell had his picture taken with Sinkwich, Trippi and Walker and it appeared in the “Glory, Glory” book that Smith and Lewis Grizzard did after the 1980 season.

“No other Bulldog fan ever had a photo made with that trio,” Smith says.

Basketball donation deadline

If you plan on making a donation to UGA’s Basketball Enhancement Fund in order to buy or renew premium season tickets, the deadline for doing so is Saturday. Seats belonging to donors who do not renew by the deadline will be made available to patrons requesting a relocation, additional season tickets (maximum of 8 per account) or new season tickets. All BEF contributors will receive a season ticket application in late August. Season ticket payment is separate from the BEF contribution and is due by Sept. 15. You can check out all the details here.

Dog rookies as NFL starters

Noting that Matthew Stafford is battling to possibly become the Lion’s starting QB in the season opener, About Them Dawgs! looks at past Georgia quarterbacks who moved up to the NFL and finds only Quincy Carter and Zeke Bratkowski started out of the gate, though Fran Tarkenton came off the bench and starred in his first game. The blog also runs down how other UGA quarterbacks did in the pros.

Belue likes Richt’s pro-set

Former quarterback Buck Belue praises the flexibility of Mark Richt’s pro-set offense in his latest blog: “For instance, against Oklahoma State he might use a heavy dose of the shotgun 3 WR/1 RB set to get after that inexperienced Cowboy secondary. Or against Carolina, maybe go heavy on the 2 TE/2 RB/1 WR set and attack with the run to minimize the effectiveness of a bunch of stunting and moving around. … The flexible nature of running a multiple set offense also allows a OC/playcaller to attack with his weapons too. Get the ball to the playmakers, regardless of where they line up. Let’s say Orson Charles shows he’s ready to get some time with the #1 Offense. [Mike] Bobo can bring back some featured plays out of the TE package. … Or say Carlton Thomas earns some time at RB. Bobo will get him the ball with a dose of screen passes or short option routes. Or how about in the red zone featuring both [A.J.] Green and Marlon Brown. Bobo could go 2 WR/2 TE/1 RB and let those two 6′5 weapons work downfield on undersized CBs.”

Georgia had 98 wins in the last decade. I wonder how many Tech had. Maybe St Simons or his boyfriend know.

Pro Set offense. I like it, too. Just another example of something you’ll never see Tech do. They don’t do anything that resembles “pro.”

Wow, let’s try that again.

24 comments on here and not one on any of the content of the blog. Nice work guys.

As Buck said, I like the versatility of the pro set. You can go to a “spread” look or the tight set w/ a full back and a TE. You don’t show too many tedencies to a D-coor. when you can run from any set, which I think the Dogs will this year.

It’s also helpful to the athletes who make it to the next level, where most offense’s are indeed from the pro set. Not too many full time spread QB’s make it successfully in the league. I read an article where so many Texas HS QB’s don’t even take any snaps from under center, continue the trend in college and it hurts them when/if they make the pro’s. I think this is going to help Matt Stafford have a nice pro career.

Love the enthusiasm in the first day with pads.. Just keep it going. For the first time in a long time, our most important game is our first game with Okie St. We can’t lose that one. Bring on the Hell Fire Defense. Somebody make up a T-shirt.

Tech is superior to ga in every single field of endeavor. Always has been. Always will be.

And make sure that Rasheed guy is healthy for the game. He is like ga’s own Reggie Ball.

Richt is telling his players how great they are and how well they are dooing. Meyer is telling his players how far behind they are and how much they need to improve. Which psychological approach do you think will work better in the preseason? Just saying…

Don’t go away mad, just go away. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are lame. Go to your site and leave the real football discussions about the Georgia Bulldogs to Bulldog fans.

The Dawgs and the Yellow Jackets have to date met 95 times on the football field, with the Bulldogs leading the 107-year-old series, 53-36-5. In 2002, Georgia hosted Georgia Tech and boasted its largest margin of victory in the series, 44 points. During the rivalry, Georgia has compiled a winning record in 8 of the 11 decades, including the past four decades.

Yes it’s true. Ga wins three of every 5 contests. This equates to 1 more win per decade. In 2002 ga finally tied Tech’s victory margin which has been held for at least 5 decades. But ga sure can fill a stadium whether they can win championships or not.

No call it the “Fireman” defense. Think of it as a five alarm fire. Units swarming from all over the place to take down the threat.

And if we get waxed you can still use the T-shirt for Willie’s trip down the Green Mile.

Thanks for the info Jimmy. I was wondering why the Tech fans hated me, I thought it was my deodarant. Amazing what some people think of as funny, I have never posted as someone else on the blog. I would rather be known as me. Period. Sad that others get a kick out of making people angry at someone who has done nothing to deserve it. I mean get angry at my own rants, fine. I am enough of an idiot for that. There is just something mentally wrong with stealing someones name to annoy others. Again, I am annoying enough without the help.
