‘Power’ ranking sees four SEC teams ahead of Dogs

ESPN.com’s Chris Low has unveiled his preseason SEC power rankings and the Dogs, ranked second last year, drop to fifth this time around. Florida, as you’d expect, is No. 1, and also ahead of Georgia are Ole Miss, Alabama and LSU. After UGA it’s Arkansas, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Auburn, Kentucky and Mississippi State.

Low likes Florida for obvious reasons. He says Ole Miss’ “combination of a franchise quarterback like Jevan Snead and perhaps the deepest defensive line in the country makes them one of the favorites this season,” though he wonders how they’ll handle all the hype. Alabama’s defense, he says, should be one of the best in the country, and while their offensive line won’t be as good, “stud receiver Julio Jones is the great equalizer.” He thinks sophomore quarterback Jordan Jefferson will be the key to LSU’s success, adding that new defensive coordinator John Chavis “has reinvigorated a defense that went belly-up last season, and the Tigers’ secondary will be scary good.”

Low’s summary of Georgia: “Mark Richt has ’em right where he wants them. Nobody really expects Georgia to contend for the SEC championships this season, which means we might want to look out for the Bulldogs. Remember 2005? The Georgia coaches think first-time quarterback starter Joe Cox, a fifth-year senior, will be the least of their problems, and the offensive line should be the strength of the team. The big question: Can Willie Martinez’s defense tackle better and get back to playing championship defense?”

Low’s summary of the Dogs is pretty much on the mark. And I know that Georgia lost most of its offensive production from last year and its defense remains a big question mark. But I don’t believe all three of those SEC West teams will prove to be stronger than Mark Richt’s Dogs and I especially am skeptical of all the preseason hype for Ole Miss. Yes, they finished strong last year and one of their wins was over Florida. But they also have question marks on defense, particularly in the secondary. The biggest thing going for them besides Jevan Snead is a cushy schedule, and I don’t think that should count in a “power” ranking.

As for the others ahead of Georgia, Alabama will be good. How good depends on an inexperienced quarterback. And I wouldn’t take it for granted that Chavis can work miracles that quickly with an LSU defense that was pretty shaky last season.

What do you think?

Georgia, Georgia,
The whole day through
Just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind

I’m say Georgia
Georgia
A song of you
Comes as sweet and clear
As moonlight through the pines

Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you

I said Georgia,
Ooh Georgia, no peace I find
Just an old sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind

Other arms reach out to me
Other eyes smile tenderly
Still in peaceful dreams I see
The road leads back to you

Georgia,
Georgia,
No peace, no peace I find
Just this old, sweet song
Keeps Georgia on my mind

I said just an old sweet song,
Keeps Georgia on my mind

Methinks if UGA played Ole Miss on a neutral field next week, Vegas would have it as a “pick ‘em”. Too many folks who think they knew what they’re talking about but really don’t, know that we lost Stafford and Moreno, but couldn’t tell you who Trinton Sturdivant and Jeff Owens are if their life depended on it.

Not saying Chris Low is that way, but I’ve run into lots of them.

We’re gonna be good.

I have been to several practices over the years but I can’t remember when I have ever seen a bigger, faster and more athletic group of dawgs. This mornings practice was amazing to see & CMR has stockpiled talent everywhere. The defense looks ferocious folks! Big hitters everywhere! The secondary is going to be a major upgrade from last season, as well the LB’s where we are really 3-deep with talent galore. Marcus Washington is going to be a beast folks….. The first team O was barely able to get a play off when he was in there. MW has the talent of Brandon Spikes, all he has to do is stay healthy. He will get a ton of pt at DE as well because CWM wants him on the field so badly. If you like defense guys…this will be your team for sure.

PS…. The O has some work to do. AJ is a man-child among children however. I think he has a chance of getting 1500 this year and I’m not kidding. I see Troup and Moore on the other side doing very well but Brown adds another dimension with that size. He is not the athlete of AJ’s caliber but he is going to be a good one. Wooten is pretty quick and so is King. To be honest it’s hard to gauge these guys because AJ is so much bigger and faster. It’s kind of crazy to see.

We will be a better team this year than last. Mark it down. Both lines will be considerably better, which will be key. Remember ALA’s lines last year? Cox will manage the game, get the ball the the playmakers. Our defense will be much improved with more speed at corners. In fact, I can see a lot of similarities between the ALA team of 08 and our team in 09. We still have to beat FLA though.

The talent levels at UGA, LSU. ‘Bama and Florida are tremendous. There’s not much separation talent-wise between them. The difference is often in coaching. I don’t think OC Bobo or DC Martinez strike fear in any other head coaches hearts. They’re pretty good but not scary good.

Dawgs may have a 1980 juggernaught. You know, the one who’s qb was 1-14 in the Sugar Bowl. I mean a real ass-kicking, name taking juggernaught. And the real cuz needs to stop responding to this imposter and we wouldn’t have to slog through all that nonsense.
