CBSSports.com has finished its ranking of college football teams this decade and UGA made it into the Top 10, placing at No. 8.
The Top 10 went like this:
1. USC
2. Oklahoma
3. Texas
4. Florida
5. LSU
6. Ohio State
7. Miami
8. Georgia
9. Virginia Tech
10. Utah
But from a Georgia fan’s standpoint, the first thing that jumps out at you is that every team ahead of the Dogs on this list has won a national championship in this decade. In fact, Miami’s lone BCS title in 2001 is probably the main reason they’re ranked ahead of UGA. Yes, the Canes should’ve played for the national championship at the end of the 2000 season but didn’t. And while they did play for it again in 2002, they lost to Ohio State. First part of the decade, they were one of the nation’s strongest programs.
But, as CBS notes, they haven’t won 10 games in a season since 2003 and haven’t been ranked at the end of the season since 2005. And while the Hurricanes have four conference titles to Georgia’s two in this decade, all four of those were in the Big Easy before Miami moved to the ACC. The Dogs have won more games than Miami in this decade, too.
So what do you think? Does Miami belong ahead of Georgia in the decade’s Top 10? Feel free to comment, vote in the poll or do both.

Saint Simons, my comment is the same as on the other blog. After all of the history and Glory Years at Tech, it’s sad that you can only point to one game to be proud of. I guess that’s all you’ve got.

Not sure why Ohio St. is in the top 10. All they have done is won the midwest version of the WAC and got a game handed to them in 2002. That team’s best player, the RB who made the game saving tackle, should not have been eligible to play that season.

Hogwash! USC gets waaaaayyyy too much attention in a weak conference, as does Ohio State. If Michigan had done anything, they would be right up there as well. Perhaps Musberger was the only CBS voter since he is such a USC homer. Utah, huh!? Do they play anyone on a consistent basis.
What about VA. Tech? They can whip Utah and Miami almost all the time and several others much more so than OSU. Also, OSU’s record against the SEC is pathetic. The polls and rankings are dependent upon quite often, one man’s opinion.

Hey god and greyhound; have you ever stopped to think that maybe uf, ut and ua took advantage of us while we we’re down? We’ve always owned tech’s arse so your still just an after thought. And Saint Simons, looks like your in my neck of the woods. You’ll be easy to spot ’cause you’ll be the only geek/nerd walking around the island in tech gear! I think the real St. Simons might be on vacation with his mommy and daddy. Don’t agree totally with that list. I am not UGA fan by no means , but I agree that #8 is about right. What invalidates the entire list is UTAH. UTAH????? Seriously???

This pretty much follows the win loss record of teams for the decade with a premium placed on championships and – in UTAH’s case – undefeated seeasons. One glaring exclusion is the team with the the highest winning percentage for the decade and arguably the most exciting victory in BCS history: Boise State. The Broncos are second only to Oklahoma in wins for the decade and have threatened to upset the system and crash the BCS party nearly every year. Sure they play in Boise, Idaho, which most SEC fans couldn’t find on a map and they have a blue field but they should be a part of this list. The winningest team of the decade can’t crack the top ten… talk about no respect.
So week one, when the Broncos of Boise State strap it on against the Oregon Ducks, just know that the winningest program this decade is taking the field and that – no your tv isn’t broken – that field is blue.
In full disclosure I am myself an SEC fan and I am confident Boise Idaho would elude most of my compatriots on an unlabeled map.

I think you’re being a little hard on St. Simons but I loved your humor. No, I don’t think tech will be in the bottom 10 out of what, 120 D1 colleges. However, when they publish the list of top 10 colleges who regularly play their bowl games on a blue field, then yes, tech will definitely be on that list.

I would flip Florida and Texas. Texas only has one conference title and one national championship to Florida’s two national championships and several conference championships. Texas has won 10 games every year this decade and has been a top 5 or top 10 team each year while Florida had some mediocre Zook years, but those years were still not that bad and their highs were obviously higher than Texas’. I would flip Miami and Georgia for consistency alone. Lastly, I wouldn’t put Utah on the list. Boise State is a more influential mid-major than Utah, and I’d argue that BCS programs like West Virginia, Louisville and maybe even Oregon have had a bigger impact than Utah

I think it’s a pretty good list and agree the
Dawgs should be ahead of Miami which should be moved down to probably 9 or 10 behind Utah. Utah definitely deserves to be in the top ten with 2 undefeated seasons in which they soundly whipped their BCS bowl opponent, legitimizing the caliber of the Ute’s team.
The top 5 teams are pretty legitimate. I would have my Gators a little higher at number 3 and Oklahoma at 5 based on their bowl game record, but realize the 8 win Zook years drags us out of the number 1 spot thru 2008.
The real top team of the decade will be determined in January 2010.

I’ll take it. Hugh step up over the 90’s. I do think Florida should be ranked higher with the two NC’s. Can’t argue the Miami above us either since they do have the NC and great start to the decade.
Cuz, no grits up here. If you do find them on a menu make sure you tell them to heat them up. I think sweet tea has made the migration North but they will ask if you want hot tea or ice tea. Prayers for you and your daughter, I hope all goes well.

The rankings for the “Top Programs” in this decade all depend on the criteria used to determine the “Top 10″. As a realistic Georgia fan I believe Georgia needs to win or at least play for a National Championship to be considered in this list.

God and Greyhound,
Nothing more signifies that UGA is a top tier program than this list so just b/c your JV team is #75 or something on this list doesn’t mean you have to be such a cry baby sissy. I uderstand that you’re extremely jealous that your program will never be on a list like this but you still need to think before you go spouting off like a big loser. TECH will always be UGA’s bitc@%!!! This year will make it 8 out of 9!! Total domination!!

Miami has gone 83-29 since 2008.
We have gone 90-26.
I think it’s close either way, especially if you are arguing who has the right to the #7 or #8 spot instead of the #1 or #2 spot.
They won an MNC, and played for another (robbed against tOSU), and arguably should have played for the 2000 MNC instead of FSU…so even though it was condensed, the overall high level of achievement may override our consistency.
On the flipside, they were in the Big East, then the ACC, so the level of competition is in question, and have been average the latter half of the decade.
Again, kind of a moot point imo…we’re in the top ten with some very impressive programs, so that is good enough for me.
I’m not going to worry about whether #7 or #8 is appropriate.
Just win, and GO DAWGS!

UGA is obviously an elite program. Mark Richt has gotten the job done. Although we haven’t won it all yet, #2 in 2007 and a bunch of top 10 finishes has us on track and its only a matter of time before we break through and win the big one. I love all the Tech geeks on this blog. Not much they can say about this!! Chalk up another UGA win and make it 8 out 9!!

They just love USC don’t they?? You can be assured that if Ohio State hadn’t been annihilated over the past few years by the SEC they would have been right there too. At least we don’t have to listen to all that Big Ten crap (for now). Hopefully, if Florida can fulfill its destiny this year, there will be an SEC team in its rightful place in the number 1 position… although it wouldn’t surprise me if many media types would still put USC up there.
