Some interesting reads to take us into the weekend …
Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald talked with Dogs assistant coach Tony Ball, who oversees kickoff returns, about UGA’s lack of success in that area last season, when they ranked eighth in the SEC and 62nd nationally, with an average of 21.2 yards per return. Ball’s response: “Is that where we ended up? That ain’t acceptable. I think we were better than that a year before that. We will be better.” Ball said Richard Samuel, Brandon Boykin and Carlton Thomas are among the players he’s considering for kickoff returner. …
Yellow peril
The Georgia Sports Blog looks at the “hidden yardage” UGA gave up last season in terms of penalties that resulted in first downs for the opposition. It wasn’t so much how many penalties the Dogs got, the blog says, as when they got them. “Last year, Georgia’s defense surrendered 35 first downs to the opposition via penalty flags. That’s a staggering 2.7 free first downs per game. By comparison, the Gators only gave up 1.5 first downs by penalty per game and Alabama only 1.2 per game.” Certainly, it’s another area where improvement is needed this year.
Cowboys armed and dangerous
And if your anxiety level about the Dogs trying to shut down Oklahoma State’s prolific offense isn’t high enough already, check out a very detailed breakdown of the Cowboys’ success running and passing in this piece at the Dr. Saturday blog.

Wild Bill, glad to hear you know how to close a loan. No I don’t need the money but who wouldn’t want to win the lottery.
I see Yellow scuzz is lurking on the Ga blogs again. Yellow, I hope you’re out on parole by November so you can see the beatdown on tv.Tech will have 3 losses before they even get to November. It is gonna be sweet.

WildBill, how is it that you call top ten teams…… .well not good? What is this “trend” you are refering to? Richt’s teams have been slightly up or down according to several factors throughout the years, but have never been what any objective person would call, not good. They have been by any definition, good. Or, UGA teams would you have considered “good” ?
Griffith was the HC for 3 years and recorded a 10-16-4 record. THIS is your references to the current state of the Georgia football program? or the “tendancies” as you put it. Interesting.

Long Dawg, you are talking a tech fan. He isn’t going to know anything about who they play by November…those games arent going to be listed on a UGA schedule. You have to break the season down by who Georgia plays week by week, and then he can at least follow along.

UGA will need to pressure Robinson. And they will need to do this without utilizing the blitz.
I think that we have the horses for this. But, as we saw last season… success at the line of scrimmage is not automatic for us. We’ve got to earn it.
This should be a good game.
That was no fluke; Johnson let up!

Yeah right, Johnson let up on a team they haven’t beat in eight years, the one team Tech would rather
beat than everyone in the ACC put together.I don’t think so.

Dear dawg nation,
I don’t drink the Koolaid out of uga’s bowl like you all so I don’t think georgia’s defense can hold the Cowboys to under 50 and I don’t think the Joe Cox lead offense will score a TD until late in the 4th quarter.
georgia will lose and there is no doubt in my mind about it. I’m thinking it will be more of a 31-0 or 49-10 instead of a 45-42.

I see you buds are still hanging in here swapping lies and tales. You have some really good ideas to chat about and think about re the dawgs. However, after long and deliberate thought since the football season ended, I will NOT be attending any dawg games this year. My doc has advised me to stay away from stressful situations as the ole ticker isn’t getting any younger. So, I have called an old Navy bud who went to Rutgers, and he is going to send me some tapes starting with the Rutgers/Howard game. I think I am on the road to recovery already, pushing out memories of the Bama game, the gators game, and the techmite game back, back, back, in the recesses of my memory. When I wake up from my diversion, and sitting at the 19th hole with a brew with my golf buds, I can reflect back on the wisdom of my lifechanging experience. Go RUTGERS!!!!!!!!

42-45 a fluke,
Bring it on!
It will be more like “getting smoked by the coke” which would be similar to the “wedges between the hedges” we gave you last year. I guarantee you that georgia won’t beat Tech this year or the next. georgia is the most overrated team in the entire state.

dawgs will be just fine with 25 players back from the worst injury season in memory!
the d-line will be strong with owens and the boys back to give the defense a big push in the middle, linebackers very strong with quality in the secondary!
the offense will be back with the walking wounded returning to the O/line,cox/gray will give options at the qb that we have not had since greene/dj,running back will be fine with great depth, and the younsters with the receiving corp will be fun to watch.
it will be another 10 plus win as the dawgs expose the cowboys and afew others along the way!
