Two-minute drill: Dogs ‘will be better’ on returns

Some interesting reads to take us into the weekend …

Marc Weiszer of the Athens Banner-Herald talked with Dogs assistant coach Tony Ball, who oversees kickoff returns, about UGA’s lack of success in that area last season, when they ranked eighth in the SEC and 62nd nationally, with an average of 21.2 yards per return. Ball’s response: “Is that where we ended up? That ain’t acceptable. I think we were better than that a year before that. We will be better.” Ball said Richard Samuel, Brandon Boykin and Carlton Thomas are among the players he’s considering for kickoff returner. …

Yellow peril

The Georgia Sports Blog looks at the “hidden yardage” UGA gave up last season in terms of penalties that resulted in first downs for the opposition. It wasn’t so much how many penalties the Dogs got, the blog says, as when they got them. “Last year, Georgia’s defense surrendered 35 first downs to the opposition via penalty flags. That’s a staggering 2.7 free first downs per game. By comparison, the Gators only gave up 1.5 first downs by penalty per game and Alabama only 1.2 per game.” Certainly, it’s another area where improvement is needed this year.

Cowboys armed and dangerous

And if your anxiety level about the Dogs trying to shut down Oklahoma State’s prolific offense isn’t high enough already, check out a very detailed breakdown of the Cowboys’ success running and passing in this piece at the Dr. Saturday blog.

I just loked at the film clips of OK State and all I can say is if we don’t tackle any better than the teams they were playing yes they will score. The tackling was terrible, at least two missed tackles on each play. And Dez Bryant was 20 yards behind the defensive back.

You can bet they will not see a defense like those when they play Georgia. They have 4 really good players but it takes 22. I am not only not afraid of OK State I can’t wait to play’em.

Long Dawg, I agree. SEC defenses are in a league of their own (pun intended). Even a “bad” SEC defense, especially one of Georgia’s caliber, is the likes of which a third-rate Big Twelve team will see once in a season. Bad for them. I’m sick of the hype surrounding these 4000 yards a game passing offenses which are supposed to obliterate this and that and the other. If (and they should) Georgia establishes any type of consistent runing game, Oklahoma State is in for a long day. I’m looking forward to the game myself. Should be a bang of a start to an interesting season. Go Dawgs !!!!

This announcement is brought to you by Bobby Dodd stadium, reminding you that College Football is MUCH more fun when you dedicate your energy pulling for your team, and being passionate through thick and thin. Now let’s stay off the UGA blogs and see if we can’t sell out just ONE home game this year!!!

When you kick the football through the endzone and the other team has to start on the 20, that’s good. When you kick the ball out of bounds, the other team starts on the 40, that’s bad. Statistics show that teams score more when they have 60 yards to go versus 80 yards to the opponent’s end zone. That shouldn’t surprise anyone. Also your headhunters don’t get hurt when they don’t have to block and tackle. The only injury could be the neck as you look up and watch the ball sail out of the end zone. This ain’t rocket science, folks. I’m glad Coach Richt is trying to fix the situation.

Fools Gold, Last year was just that….last year. I believe with the leadership that is being reported and the accountability that is being reported you will see a much improved defensive effort in 09. Frankly I just don’t get the negativity. Either support your team (if you are a UGA supporter) or find a team that will live up to the standards that you have set (perfection in all facets of the game ?) 14 -0 every season 77-0 every game? Just because your existence is miserable don’t bring everyone else down with your CONSTANT whining. Geez, you make me want to call up and talk to my ex wife. 4 of the 9 letters you describe yourself with actually are correct

Anyhow I digress, I realize that asking for perfection is asking a lot. I’m just wanting the dawgs to strive for perfection. 77 – 0 over a SC or a Kentucky would be nice along with a couple of 14 – 0 seasons. Others have done it why not the Dawgs?

77-0 over Tn Tech would be more realistic. Have you seen SC play defense? And Ky is going to be pretty good offensively as well. All I ask of any team I follow is to be competitive on a game by game basis. Don’ like 49-10 to Fla but that’s last years problem. Trust me, UGA is going to be just fine….And I’m going to hold off on that call for now

77-0 over USC is not going to happen. I live here on the border. The UGA game is USC east’s biggest game after Clemson. If you look on the USC roster you will see it has tons of guys that went to high school in Georgia. They always feel they have something to prove when they play the Dawgs. I have a lot of respect for their fanbase also. They have stuck with their team through thick and thin. Unfortunately for them, it has been mostly thin. Kentucky and Vandy have had a resurgence in their programs. The days of an automatic win are over there also. UT always dangerous. Auburn is our cousins to the west. UF, what can I say, probably the top program in the country right now. I believe we can be competitive with them all. But thinking that we will shutout any of those teams is not in my thought process.

General, you make me want to grab a beer. I wonder if we can join Coach Kiffin and Coach Richt for Beer Summit II. Bring some sippin solvent. Lane might rip off his shirt after a few shots of it.

Nick Saban you are right, there is no way we could stay on the field with your Tide Paper either. We will be lucky to get any yards, stop any team, score any points, much less win any games. I’ve had season tickets for over 30 years, I guess there is no reason to even go. Saint Simons is right, they killed us last year. I can’t remember when we lost by 3 points after giving up a TD on offense.

Doesn’t have to be 77 -0 I’ll take 62 – 21 or a 52 – 14 which would be great. I think Fool Gold is just trying to point out that the Dawgs just need to put some teams away when they are supposed to. Whether some believe it or not Strength of schedule matters and Style points looks awfully good in those polls. Oh yeah Dawgstephen, if you are afraid of criticism and for censorship then why don’t you work for the Obama administration instead of trying to ride on the coattails of the AJC in promoting your blog. People need to grow up on both sides who are either for and or against the dawgs. If you don’t like what other people opine then just simply disregard it. I get a good laugh sometimes at some of the crazy comments being posted here. Yes a win is a win but unfortunately the pundits analyze how you win too. Chillax people!

Tawpdog, I understand that UGA fans are hoping for things to be better in 09 as every fan of CFB is hoping for their team as well they should be, however, what are you basing this on? Why will every “faucet” be better in 09 for UGA? How do you know that Joe Cox plays with “heart and that will funnel to everyone”? Why do you think that UGA will go 12-0 in the regular season? I am not trying to start a flame war like some others on here, but if you would tell me why you feel this way, it would be appreciated. Most people talk about what they “feel” and “hope” and “think”. Can you give me something football related as to why you “feel” this way?

Itsgettingclose, you posted that UGA has a true leader at QB. What are you basing this on? As for the depth and Experience at both lines, I would agree with the experience, however, depth I would not at the DE position. That, imo, is UGA’s biggest weakness on D. The secondary isn’t all that good, but a good Dline will take the pressure off of a below avg secondary…jmo

Love GA, what bad calls were there in the UF/UGA game in 08? You are probably talking about the play where UF’s WR Louis Murphey grabbed Asher Allen’s jersey and held him up so he could run by him and caught a TD pass in the process, however, the game was 21-3 or 28-3 at that point so surely you aren’t blaming that loss on that one play. The only other play I can remember was Hadens INT for UF where he pulled on AJ Greens jersey, but again, Stafford underthrew that ball by atleast 10 yards so blame Stafford, not the refs. UF won that game fair and square so please don’t blame the refs for a 49-10 loss. I can understand UF fans griping about the 03 FSU game and I can understand UGA fans griping about the “Jasper Sanks fumble”, but I can NOT understand anyone complaining about one or two calls in a 49-10 blowout
