Bulldog Bites: Coaching furloughs at UGA?

Georgia Athletic Association staff members are expected to be subject to state-mandated furlough days that are to be taken by the end of the calendar year, the Athens Banner-Herald reports. Athletics director Damon Evans says that could include contract employees like coaches, but he’s still waiting for a ruling on that. The athletic association is a private, nonprofit corporation, but is subject to the furloughs because those who work there are state employees, Evans said, adding that they haven’t yet figured out how unpaid days off would be implemented for coaches during the football season. That’s a tough break in terms of timing, with football season essentially taking up the remainder of the year, but if Mark Richt and his staff must take the three furlough days mandated by Gov. Sonny Perdue, it seems like the best solution would be to do a few during the off week in October and the rest in December. …

As Tim Tucker has reported, UGA has announced some more cutoff scores for the cumulative lifetime contributions to the Hartman Fund necessary to buy tickets for individual games this season. They range from a high of $32,500 required to buy LSU tickets to $4,000 to buy Oklahoma State tickets. Cutoffs haven’t been calculated yet for Vandy, Tech and Florida. The cutoff for the 5,000 Oklahoma State tickets was notably lower than last year’s cutoff for tickets to the Arizona State game, which was $27,007. Stillwater may indeed be a great little town, as Cowboys fans have been insisting in the blog comments, but it obviously is not as attractive a trip for UGA fans as Tempe was. …

The Banner-Herald reports a few more details on plans for the first hour of the extended four-hour pregame show on UGA football radio broadcasts this season. Play-by-play man Scott Howard says “the format for that will be a little bit different from the bulk of the pregame show. It will be more of a studio-type presentation. There may be some live interviews, some prerecorded interviews, some phone calls, kind of a mishmash of things. … There will be at least two hosts for that hour with maybe some crossover from the rest of the broadcast crew, including myself.” Sounds like that first hour might be the part of the show based at the new Hotel Indigo in downtown Athens, as was reported earlier.

Couldn’t it be argued that Willie Martinez has taken furlough days for the following games:

Auburn in 2005?

Florida in 2005?

WVU in the Sugar Bowl?

Tennessee in 2006 and 2007?

Kentucky and Vandy in 2006?

Bama, Florida, and Tech in 2008?

That’s TEN furlough days by Soft Willie. At least. I’m sure I’m forgetting a few.

Why not pay these coaches from all the extra money that football brings in to the state/school. I think the players should be getting some kind money to this is crazy. The way the school has all this money and the players get nothing!

If UGA’s or any other coaches are furloughed they should simply report for work as usual whether they are getting paid for that/those days or not. I certainly wouldn’t want my section of the team to fall behind because of the furloughs. Same goes for any other profession whose system will allow such.

Don’t be silly. These guys make so much money that a “furlough” means nothing. Not to mention that if they don’t show up for work, paid or unpaid, they are history. To suggest they will actually stay home for three or four days is humorous. You are hanging around football locker rooms too much.

Since 1964, the Jackets have managed just 12 wins against Georgia. Let me say that again for all of you Jacket fans out there…12 wins in 45 games.
To say that Georgia has dominated this series in the past 45 seasons would be a slight understatement. During that stretch of dominance, Georgia has posted win streaks of five, six and seven (twice). Tech has won three straight once (1998-2000).

Bill, I just need to clarify one thing about furloughs; a furlough day does not mean you have to not work, it just means you don’t get paid for those days. Most professors I’ve talked to here at UGA aren’t planning on taking the day off and they can’t in some cases. There’s no way you see the coaching staff just take off 3 days completely during the season. They’ll work through them just like everybody else.

PS- While it may seem like gettting furloughed for three days of pay would be a lot for Mark Richt considering he makes $2.85 million a year, it actually won’t affect him as much as it will other staff members. Of that $2.85 million, only $328,050 of that is actually paid by the UGAA; the rest comes from endorsements.

As reported by someone else, furlough doesn’t mean you will not show up for work, just no pay for the designated day of the furlough. Have family members who are teachers and they all are going to show up for work, just no pay! Their rationale is that it is not fair to students not to show up. And, in most of their cases the furloughs will be on days of things such as “pre-planning” or “teacher workshops” when no students are present.I feel sure that the UGA coaches will show up on those days, if they even do come under the mandates!

I know that St Simons is only about 25 or so years old and a non tech graduate or even a legit fan. Here is why:

When I mention names of Eddie Lee Ivory and his rape charges in Wisc. and the names of Jim Lavin, Mike Mooney and Kevin Salibury that beat up that itty, bitty gal and her boyfriend in the old pizza joint, near where the Tech motel used to be on N Avenue, he does not respond.

Also, the giggles that we UGA folks still get ( like chills up our legs) when we think about big bad QB Reggie ( PE Major ) Ball throwing the ball out of bounds on 4th down, he ought ot have a come back. I mean, that 45-42 thing is it. He has only that?? to chat about.

We can talk about the above illustrious names and:
The frosh recruit of two year back and his APD rape charges or
Reuben Houson and HIS drug issues or the pride of The Flats …

Qb Joey Hamilton and HIS DRUG ISSUES.

This proves that Simple Simon is only a thug kid or a deadbeat with a GED. He only has the depth to throw that out ………we still can giggle however. “Surely coach, we get 5 downs here in historical Grant field” said Reggie.
