Two-minute drill: Dogs’ recruiting class best in SEC?

ESPN.com’s Chris Low declares Georgia is “burning up the recruiting trail.” He says, “The Bulldogs are making a strong bid to have the best recruiting class in the SEC, and that’s saying something when you look at whom Alabama, Florida and LSU have committed. … The Bulldogs now have 12 ESPNU 150 Watch List prospects (the most in the SEC) among the 18 players they have committed.” …

David Hale of the Bulldogs Blog identifies five Dogs who remain question marks and need to step up this season and, no, none of them is a tailback. His five: defensive ends Justin Houston and Demarcus Dobbs, punter Drew Butler, safety Reshad Jones and tight end Aron White. …

Loran Smith writes in the Athens Banner-Herald that the flap over Steve Spurrier initially not voting for Tim Tebow on the coaches’ preseason All-SEC team is much ado about nothing. Coaches should coach while someone else does the picking and ranking, he says. Smith also notes that coaches often have been known to let their prejudices influence their voting: “In 1990, there was a split vote on the national champion. Colorado, which beat Notre Dame 10-9 in a thrilling game in the Orange Bowl, was voted No. 1 by the Associated Press. The United Press International poll, whose voters were a panel of college head coaches, chose Georgia Tech. … Tech’s Bobby Ross was highly regarded in the coaching profession, but I can name you a number of coaches who did not like Bill McCartney of Colorado, a man who wore his religion on his sleeve. Several coaches voted against McCartney and Colorado because they thought McCartney to be a hypocrite.” …

Sports Illustrated’s Stewart Mandel on Georgia QB Joe Cox: “While I don’t necessarily see an SEC title in Cox’s future — that would require knocking off Florida — I would not be surprised at all if Cox and Georgia surprise some people this fall. For one thing, Mark Richt’s past two BCS bowl teams (2005 and ’07) both started the season outside the top 10, and it appears this Georgia squad will do so, too. That’s good news, because the Dawgs don’t seem to fare as well when expectations are high (see last year). Secondly, the last time we saw Cox in meaningful action as a redshirt freshman in ’06, he came in and led an impressive comeback against Colorado, throwing two touchdown passes. And finally, he’ll have a good supporting cast — no Knowshon Moreno, but an experienced offensive line, star receiver A.J. Green and the underrated Michael Moore (not the filmmaker; the guy who had six catches for 97 yards in the Capital One Bowl). I think we can say with reasonable certainty the SEC will place two teams in the BCS, and that one of those teams will be Florida. But your guess is as good as mine as to which of four teams — Alabama, Ole Miss, LSU or Georgia — will be the other.”

I’m a Dawg fan too. Just wanted to make sure my fellow UGA fans didn’t get too worked up about that and make fools of themselves.

Georgia Tech has girls? I mean, I saw some Linebacker-ish person with breasts in a Gold shirt last year, but I just thought it was a freak occurance.

Have the commemorative rings celebrating the rare win over UGA been issued by the techies yet? Nothing is more flattering than having the other school recognize how rare it is to actually win. Thanks, gt!

Where did all of these great recruiting classes go? Supposedly, UGA had a few injuries and had no depth to replace them leading to the GT victory. Amazing how y’all pat yourselves on the back during recruiting and then poor mouth your depth after a loss.

A decent HS coach could do as well as Richt has at UGA.

Hey “ratdawg” – because:
1)I was born (1950) and raised in Georgia.
2) Both my parents are UGA graduates (even though my dad always pulled for Ga Tech because he went to the HS next door to GT)and were born and raised in GA which just proves “2 wrongs makes a right” or “2 negatives make a positive”!
3) I use to deliver the AJC paper in the late 50s and early 60s.
4) The AJC is or use to be a SE regional newspaper delivered all over the southeastern US (until it’s editors started it’s liberal bias 20 years ago).

So what’s your history in this area “ratdawg”?

Well, yellow wig, come next week you’ll be back in school and won’t have to worry your little wings about flying around this blog dropping your “genius” remarks.

Dawgs always have a great recruiting class. Doesn’t mean didly if our coaches can’t produce a quality end product with them. Can you imagine how powerful UGA would be in the SEC if the program had a great DC and OC? Man talk about kicking butt. Instead, we’re stuck with Silly Willie and Goofy Boobo. Oh well. Can’t have everything.

Tech won the 1990 championship(held hands championship) by beating #19 Nebraska. Wow..that is awesome. I know the BCS is far from perfect, but at least the national champs have to beat a good team in the bowl game.

Recruiting looks really strong for Bama, UGA, and UF. LSU is only very slightly behind. Currently Bama has the 2nd ranked recruiting class for 2010, UGA 3rd, UF 5th, and LSU 7th. But UGA and UF slightly higher average star ratings on their classes. Bama just has a few more commits right now at 20. Florida is probably tops in the sec though as far as average star rating with dawgs only slighly behind. Bottom line though is that Bama, UGA, and UF will all finish with top 5 classes most likely and LSU certainly with a top 10 class.

Richt’s class may be the best recruiting class in the SEC in years! With all this talent, he should start dominating the SEC after tebow leaves florida. Look for the DAWGS in the BCS on a regular basis, starting in 2010. Florida’s run is over soon!!!

Saint Simons, please stop with that post. We won a good hard fought game and certainly some good natured trash talk to our friends from up the road was in order. That said, act like you have been there before, brother. Posting the score everytime a new blog goes up makes me cringe. Do you see fans of any top tier schools (other than some Bama ‘necks) behaving like that? Have Dawg fans gloated like you are on our message boards nine months after they beat us? No!! That is because they expect to win every game they play (save one) even if they come up short some time. We got a hell of a coach and should be a program to be reckoned with so lets start acting like we expect to win everytime we take the field. Let that game go and lets go whip some tail this year. I love that you are a fan who seems to care and I feel bad calling you out in front of the “enemy” but you have to stop embarrasing the rest of us and making us all look like fans of a second tier program.

If all of us would ignore st simons he would go away. By repeatedly responding to his childlike posts keeps him or hit making the posts. Anyway, recruiting is overblown. A top 10 recruiting class or a series of top 10 recruiting classes will not make you a good team. Good coaching, a lot of high level execution, teamwork, and giving it all you have will make you a good or great team, even if your team is made up of 3 and 2 stars. See Utah last year.

still no answers….only pipe dreams and pissy attitudes when people tell the truth…

also, The reason rivals are on a dog blog is because we keep up with other teams to have an idea about as many teams as we can and no what to expect. That is why UGA fans are disappointed every year and other fans are not because UGA only reads about how good they will be while other fans want to hear what EVERYONE is saying.
