Two-minute drill: Dogs’ recruiting class best in SEC?

ESPN.com’s Chris Low declares Georgia is “burning up the recruiting trail.” He says, “The Bulldogs are making a strong bid to have the best recruiting class in the SEC, and that’s saying something when you look at whom Alabama, Florida and LSU have committed. … The Bulldogs now have 12 ESPNU 150 Watch List prospects (the most in the SEC) among the 18 players they have committed.” …

David Hale of the Bulldogs Blog identifies five Dogs who remain question marks and need to step up this season and, no, none of them is a tailback. His five: defensive ends Justin Houston and Demarcus Dobbs, punter Drew Butler, safety Reshad Jones and tight end Aron White. …

Loran Smith writes in the Athens Banner-Herald that the flap over Steve Spurrier initially not voting for Tim Tebow on the coaches’ preseason All-SEC team is much ado about nothing. Coaches should coach while someone else does the picking and ranking, he says. Smith also notes that coaches often have been known to let their prejudices influence their voting: “In 1990, there was a split vote on the national champion. Colorado, which beat Notre Dame 10-9 in a thrilling game in the Orange Bowl, was voted No. 1 by the Associated Press. The United Press International poll, whose voters were a panel of college head coaches, chose Georgia Tech. … Tech’s Bobby Ross was highly regarded in the coaching profession, but I can name you a number of coaches who did not like Bill McCartney of Colorado, a man who wore his religion on his sleeve. Several coaches voted against McCartney and Colorado because they thought McCartney to be a hypocrite.” …

Sports Illustrated’s Stewart Mandel on Georgia QB Joe Cox: “While I don’t necessarily see an SEC title in Cox’s future — that would require knocking off Florida — I would not be surprised at all if Cox and Georgia surprise some people this fall. For one thing, Mark Richt’s past two BCS bowl teams (2005 and ’07) both started the season outside the top 10, and it appears this Georgia squad will do so, too. That’s good news, because the Dawgs don’t seem to fare as well when expectations are high (see last year). Secondly, the last time we saw Cox in meaningful action as a redshirt freshman in ’06, he came in and led an impressive comeback against Colorado, throwing two touchdown passes. And finally, he’ll have a good supporting cast — no Knowshon Moreno, but an experienced offensive line, star receiver A.J. Green and the underrated Michael Moore (not the filmmaker; the guy who had six catches for 97 yards in the Capital One Bowl). I think we can say with reasonable certainty the SEC will place two teams in the BCS, and that one of those teams will be Florida. But your guess is as good as mine as to which of four teams — Alabama, Ole Miss, LSU or Georgia — will be the other.”

FYI, Buddy of mine was an Intern at the AJC this past summer. He told me that St. Simons guy is really this dude that works for the paper. That is why he is able to comment on the stories right after they post them, because THEY tell him to do it. It is what starts all of the jaw-jacking and the AJC loves it because they get more website hits as a result. Just though I would let you know.

What’s your point?
Rivals has the curdawgs 2010 recruiting class behind LSUs, Gators and Alabamas at this point with the 2009 season over a month away. The only real conclusion that can be drawn is that at least 4 SEC teams will likely have top 10 recruiting classes in 2010 and the final ranking will be based on the number of scholarships each team has available in 2010, because the quality (star rating from Rivals, Scout, ESPN, etc.)will be close to the same. Yesterday the Gators were the Rivals #2 (16 commitments with more Rival 100 players than any SEC team), but today LSU has moved ahead with (I think 20) commitments and the dawgs are number 6 with 18 commitments. Thanks God practice starts next week!

according to Rivals.com…the answer is NOPE….UF is behind Texas only and that will change. They just have a few more commits. UF will definitely have a top 3 class at the end and maybe top class overall, not that it means much…

ESPN = SEC homers; Loran Smith conveniently disregards that Colorado had lost a game and had two very controversial wins (five downs Loran?). Always dissing on Tech, but Bill I know you are “going to wipe the smiles off of Tech fans’ faces.” (one way or another.)

Florida looks to have the best class developing to me. When looking at the film of Ball from Jackson GA along w/ his 40 time at the camp last week, they may have gotten a bigtime player. I hate saying it, but they know what they are doing. They also did very well last year with only signing about 16 people…last class was full of quality.

Bama looks good as well, but we’ll see…that’s a different breed overthere. These services are capitalists and as long as they keep telling AL people what they want to hear, the cash register keeps ringing.

Georgia is doing well also as usual. Six out of seven years, UGA has finished in the Top 10 final standings so Richt and Garner seem to be handling things as well. IF UGA could find a DC and put Willie back in the booth in charge of DB’s, the D class could be great in my opinion and could lead to bigger things.

:) We are happy to announce that UGA and its fans are now charter members in our weak SEC sisters club. This club is for only weak SEC teams and its fans. Fans can vent their frustations only when their club team plays another club team member. No other venting about outside of conference teams. No venting about club teams performance when playing an Elite SEC team because it is expected and upsets are not that often. Fans can vent about offensive and defensive woes. Special teams woes. Assistant coaching blunders and head coaching blunders too. Off field displinary problems and arrests are also included. Recruiting comparisons are allowed to identify players who are not panning out. Vannila offensive play calling and defenses allowing 30 points in a game are great topics as well! The Club members and its fans are as follows: Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Ole Miss., Miss. State, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. Please note Auburns membership is still pending. Let us hear from you! :)

Auburn membership still pending? 5-7 last year and 0-3 vs. Georgia since ‘05. I think they qualify. I would also like to nominate LSU with their 3-5 SEC record last year and another blowout loss to Georgia. They also qualify if a 10 win Georgia does. You have a lot of work to do hater.

Hey Gatorman,
Let me help you out. The point is…recruiting is going well for the Dawgs. We are here to read news about “the Dawgs”. If we wanted a recruiting update on ur team, LSU or Alabama, we all would have gone to a different site. Practice or not, it is close enough to read print about your team. Why are you here everyday?

UGA is definitely having a great year recruiting thus far and end the end, signing day, it will be between UF, UGA, Bama and LSU for the best class in the SEC.

What hurts UGA is they only realistically have 2-4 slots left.Even though at minnimum 2 will be 4 star or better UF has probably 8-9 slots left to fill and will at minnimum fill those with 5 4*s or better which would catapault them over UGA ranking wise. Quality wise all 4 of those teams will be very close in average star ranking.

What’s funny is Lane kiffin and his supposed superstar recruiting staff is getting their tails kicked out there and can’t even find a recruit at their most glaring need where someone could start from day one…QB.

weak SEC sisters club

Clarification: Please note a few criteria for a team to be eligible in the weak SEC sisters club are as follows. Struggling with other club team members. Teams getting pounded by elite SEC teams. Team members inability to score style points against other team members. Having 3 and 4 star players but still loses or struggles with lesser club team members. No National Championships in football in the last 25 years. Hope this clears up the confusion for fans who simply are delusional. :)

Burning the recruiting trail? Maybe, UGA but lost two HUGE in-state recruits this past week to Fla – Ball and Brown, so I don’t know how valid that point is anymore. we are doing well, but Fla definitely is doing better now.

Clarification: For those who have registered complaints abouts Auburn’s pending status, Auburn has filed a letter regarding the 2005 season in which it believes that they should have been crowned National Champions and that it has also filed a fact that it has a overall winning record against UGA. :)
