Oddsmakers see Dogs going 8-4

Las Vegas oddsmakers place the odds of the Georgia Bulldogs winning the 2009 SEC Championship at 10/1 and see the Dogs with 8 regular season wins this season in their over/under betting lines, MrSEC.com and VegasInsider.com report. That win total is “shaded” slightly on the over side, VegasInsider says.

Florida, naturally, is the favorite to take the SEC with 1/2 odds, followed by Alabama, LSU and Ole Miss (all at 9/2 odds). From there the odds go from 20/1 for South Carolina and Tennessee all the way up to 75/1 for Mississippi State.

Will the Dogs have over or under 8 wins in the regular season?

The Las Vegas Sports Consultants’ SEC regular season win totals run like this: Vanderbilt with 4.5 wins, Kentucky with 6, Auburn with 6.5, South Carolina with 6.5, Tennessee with 7, Arkansas with 7, Georgia with 8, LSU with 8.5, Ole Miss with 9, Alabama with 9.5 and Florida with 11 wins. They didn’t bother to estimate Mississippi State’s win total.

Like most polls so far, Brian Edwards of VegasInsider.com sees Georgia coming in second in the SEC East. His summation of the Dogs: “Georgia was overrated last season, but I think it is an underrated squad this year. The Dawgs are flying under the radar mostly due to the departures of QB Matthew Stafford and RB Knowshon Moreno. However, it says here that fifth-year senior QB Joe Cox is going to be better than expected and third-year sophomore RB Caleb King looks poised for a breakout campaign. The offensive line, riddled with injuries in 2008, should be stout thanks to the return of OT Trinton Sturdivant. I have UGA finishing 8-4 but it could easily go 9-3 or even 10-2 with a few breaks. The Week 3 trip to Arkansas is a big swing game.”

I’ll be making my annual venture out on the limb with my season prediction in a couple of weeks, but in the meantime, what do you think of what Vegas says? Will the Dogs win over 8 wins this season or under 8 wins? Feel free to comment and vote in the poll or do both.

Clowns, no no no. The difference is when the teams lose. In 96, Florida was sitting on the couch, season done, when Texas upset Nebraska which allowed Florida the rematch with FSU. That’s backing in. And Florida didn’t lose to South Carolina in 2002. And FSU beating Florida has no implications on the SEC race. But, yes, it does appear Meyer is the better coach.

If “good feelings” and an “emotinal team” with “team spirit” win games then we will have an undefeated season. Remeber that magical second half against Alabama last year? I loved the emotion and spirit they showed then.

This isn’t Pop Warner. It’s SEC football. Not everyone gets a trophy.

actually austin, FSU beating UF did have implications since there was a three way tie btwn UT/UF/UGA….UT got to play Vandy, UGA got to play GT, and UF had to play FSU and was raped in the worst officiated game in the history of football. They were going with the rankings. Best ranking unless the 2nd highest ranking beat the highest ranked team…so UF would have went to Atlanta, but losing to FSU put them out so it did affect the sec..

and I disagree that it is different when a team loses…If so, how can you say UF backed in last year. Everyone lost a regular season game so how did UF back in…

Same with 06….USC lost their last reg season game to give them 2 losses while UF had 1…how is that backing in….

96….not that I agree there is a such thing as backing in, would be the year you would have an argument if there was such a thing.

IF UF starts out 0-2 in the conference and UGA loses their last 3 games so UF goes over UGA…I consider that UGA choking…not UF backing, but that is just me

It’s possible for UGA to lose four games. Key word there is POSSIBLE. I see them losing to UF and LSU. The “possible” games they need to watch out for are OSU and ARK. UGA always does better when they’re the underdawg so don’t be suprised if they go 10-2 with a good bowl to finish the season.

Clowns, I’ll put that back on you: where has Georgia been lucky in terms of other teams losing? We’re talking late in the season games. Like Texas beating Nebraska in December in 1996, an upset that allowed Florida play for title. USC losing to UCLA on Dec 2 in 2006, an upset that allowed Florida to play for the title.

Hey, clown…..if UGA’s win in 07 was because of hurt Tebow, too bad. A win is a win. I didn’t cry when you guys barely beat a Joe T lead team when DJ was hurt.

paddy and pitbull, I like your optimism, but obviously those who don’t know jack about UGA Football can’t see what we see. A healthy and experienced OL and DL, solid LBs and an improving secondary. 3-4 good RBs, not Moreno’s, but collectively a solid group. AJ Green, the best WR in the SEC and Joe Cox, who is more of a leader than Matt Stafford could ever dream to be. Plus as a wild card we have two incoming freshmen who have yet to see the field and don’t know how well they will play until practice begins. All of you who are against UGA have only saw the spring game which is never a good indicator on how well the team will play.

My definition of backing in is winning berth when you were not in control of your destiny. Had Vandy beat TN in 2007, Georgia would have backed into the SECCG vs LSU. Georgia never seems to get those breaks.

austindawg- If ifs and buts were candy and nuts what a wonderful Christmas it will be. Good teams win games when they need to. USC lost to UCLA in 2006 and shot themselves in the foot. IF Florida loses to FL State the same week then we are out of the national championship game. We didn’t, we won when we needed to win. If Georgia starts winning games when they need to (and not get pounded on national television or lose to Tech) their luck will start to change too.

UGA losses in 2009:
OSU – 70/30 chance;
LSU – 60-40 chance;
UF – 90-10 chance; and maybe
GT – 50-50 chance.

9-3 or 10-2 and I trip to a descent bowl is most probable and in the SEC, a admirable season.

Aaron Murray should be our starting QB by game 4 of the season if not earlier. The only way Joe Cox can hold him off is if the Dawgs get off to a fast start. Our schedule is pretty tough this year. Our early season shedule is really tough with 2 of the first 4 games being on the road and against quality oppents. We have atletes on defense but we all know how bad the coordinator is, same with the offense….Man i just looked at the schedule again game 5 LSU at home then followed by ate Tenn and at Vandy followed by the bye week the The gators….Yep Murray should be our staring QB before week 4, if Ritch redshirts this guy, I say let Ritch go to MIA and we start over. Murray has the atleticism of D.J Shockley, the quick release of Dan marino and a big boy arm. If you redshirt Murray you hurt your chances in 2 season instead of one. Treat this season like Stafford freshmen year, take some bad losses to help your QB mature to help your team in the future.

I predict that very few pre-season predictions will be correct. That statement is true in most years, With this year’s team there are even more variables, thus more unpredictability. This could be a team that needs a win in Atlanta to be bowl eligible or a team that plays in ATL the following week. When you combine the fact that we have one proven offensive skill player with the difficulty of the schedule there is really no way to tell which way this team might go. The question should be tabled until after the South Carolina game. If we are 2-0 watch out. If we are 1-1 or worse, who the hell knows what happens except that Aaron Murray will be playing a lot.

I will say this though the defense will be better, especially when Houston comes back. But we are going to have to score points to have a big year because of the powerful offenses we will play (OK. State, LSU, UF and GT will all avg, close to 40ppg if not more.) Are we expecting to hold each of them under 30? That would be tough for any defense to do. If we can, see you in Atlanta. This means we have to be able to put up points to win all of those games. If we can get one or two wr’s (other than AJ) to produce, have a productive te, and we can get close to 200 ypg on the ground we will be very tough to beat, but I need to see it before I’m relying on it.

That said, watch out Gators, neither of your prior 2 defending champs beat the Dawgs. We have a tremendous record vs. defending National Champions. I think its something like 8-2.

Dawgs 10-2. Cox is going to surprise quite a few, and unlike last year when the O line was decimated by injuries, this team with a stable of running backs behind a healthy line, several teams are going to be very surprised……including one that kicks a field goal at the end of game up by 30+

ok, imo, I don’t care when you lose…if someone loses 2 games and the other team only loses one, the team that gets in with 1 loss didn’t back in imo…They got in because they had less losses. Who cares when UCLA beat them? That argument doesn’t make sense. Florida was lucky that USC choked I guess….is that what you are wanting…if so, who cares? Florida was upset against Auburn earlier in the year…Did that make USC lucky since they moved ahead of UF?

Gary, I am sure you do like what they’re saying since it is good about your beloved puppies, however, there is still no evidence to support their claims nor is there any to support yours! Those are the facts. Anyone can play the I wish/feel/think game…hell, I think Chris Rainey will rush for 3000 yards this year….see how stupid that sounds? Tell me why you feel that way! Is that so hard?

Why will your DE’s be better since they have shown everyone NOTHING last year? They weren’t spectacular in the Spring and the Fall practices has yet to begin so why in the world do you think they will be so much better? Same goes with the runningbacks and the db’s. Curran is really good, but the others are not and I explained why earlier. Now, other than it is what you feel and hope, tell me why the other lb’s will be in position and tackle better this year! WHAT will make them better? Tell me why the secondary will be better…..and I really want to know why you feel Cox will be a better leader than Stafford. This should be good….BASED ON WHAT????????? As for the incoming freshman, give it a rest. What decent school doesn’t have freshman studs coming in? For every big name recruit UGA can name, I can name one for UF. Who cares? Until they prove it on the field, you have nothing other than hopes and dreams, but when it comes to FOOTBALL TALK, it means nothing and nobody knows what they will turn into on the field which means you wasted a lot of time talking about them.

Finally, as for AJ GReen….He is a stud, but he is not the best in the SEC. That honor goes to Julio Jones and any scout/coach/non uga fan would say the same thing….and don’t bother bringing up stats unless you are ready to admit that tebow was better than Stafford because stats don’t tell the whole story…so…have at it

austin, what are you talking about….

Had FSU not beaten UF in 03, UGA would not have made it to the seccg which means UGA did back in according to your logic that year and for the clueless ones who say that a nonconference game meant nothing to the sec, don’t waste my time because if you were a dog fan longer than a couple of years and was around to know the circumstances back in 03 with the 3 way tie, you would know that it DID play a role in the seccg

Also, in 2005, Auburn beat UGA and it took USC to beat UF for UGA to make it to the seccg so UGA has actually had that luck twice….

bottom line…I don’t think there is such a thing. IMO, if UF loses their first game this year and with two weeks left they are ranked number three, USC loses to UCLA to bump UF ahead, that is not backing in imo…and regardless if they did, UF proved each of the three times that they belonged.

52-20 over FSU
41-14 over OSU
24-14 over OU(the best offense ever possibly)

call it backing in or whatever you want….I’ll call it 3 rings and about to be 4 while UGA is stuck on 1….and once again, I don’t want to hear that crap about UGA winning it when everyone else was fighting a war…

Saint Simons, your mommy has your afternoon Little Debbie snack and glass of milk waiting for you in the kitchen. Run on along now, eat your snack and go outside and play.

UGA will beat Ok. St. and GT and might just surprise Florida, this year. I’ll believe that when I see it, but the wins are happening with more regularity now than in the 90’s. This series is fairly cyclical by decade and I would say that we are drawing closer. No one wins the MNC without a little luck.

I would trade schedules with GT any day. The person who said UGA would go 6-6 playing in the ACC is obviously high on something.

I predict UGA will be better than people think, Florida will be as good as people think, but will not repeat as MNC, GT will actually be worse than last year, but not by much. It didn’t take long for LSU to figure that offense out, and the other D-1 teams who are not the Service Academys (Thanks to all Service Men and Women for your service to our country!!!!! God bless you all!!) will figure that offense out soon enough.

2005 team would have pounded florida with DJ healthy and able to play. Florida went up and got slapped by the chickens the very next week. Meyer got lucky and faced a fraternity QB instead of the SEC offensive player of the year. He was still about 70% against auburn the next week.

Breaks, luck or whatever you want to call it, that team eventually won the SEC and the injury cost them a shot at the NT.

:) We are happy to announce that UGA and its fans are now charter members in our weak SEC sisters club. This club is for only weak SEC teams and its fans. Fans can vent their frustations only when their club team plays another club team member. No other venting about outside of conference teams. No venting about club teams performance when playing an Elite SEC team because it is expected and upsets are not that often. Fans can vent about offensive and defensive woes. Special teams woes. Assistant coaching blunders and head coaching blunders too. Off field displinary problems and arrests are also included. Recruiting comparisons are allowed to identify players who are not panning out. Vannila offensive play calling and defenses allowing 30 points in a game are great topics as well! The Club members and its fans are as follows: Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Ole Miss., Miss. State, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. Please note Auburns membership is still pending. Let us hear from you! :)

Your team is going to be clobbered this year.
