Oddsmakers see Dogs going 8-4

Las Vegas oddsmakers place the odds of the Georgia Bulldogs winning the 2009 SEC Championship at 10/1 and see the Dogs with 8 regular season wins this season in their over/under betting lines, MrSEC.com and VegasInsider.com report. That win total is “shaded” slightly on the over side, VegasInsider says.

Florida, naturally, is the favorite to take the SEC with 1/2 odds, followed by Alabama, LSU and Ole Miss (all at 9/2 odds). From there the odds go from 20/1 for South Carolina and Tennessee all the way up to 75/1 for Mississippi State.

Will the Dogs have over or under 8 wins in the regular season?

The Las Vegas Sports Consultants’ SEC regular season win totals run like this: Vanderbilt with 4.5 wins, Kentucky with 6, Auburn with 6.5, South Carolina with 6.5, Tennessee with 7, Arkansas with 7, Georgia with 8, LSU with 8.5, Ole Miss with 9, Alabama with 9.5 and Florida with 11 wins. They didn’t bother to estimate Mississippi State’s win total.

Like most polls so far, Brian Edwards of VegasInsider.com sees Georgia coming in second in the SEC East. His summation of the Dogs: “Georgia was overrated last season, but I think it is an underrated squad this year. The Dawgs are flying under the radar mostly due to the departures of QB Matthew Stafford and RB Knowshon Moreno. However, it says here that fifth-year senior QB Joe Cox is going to be better than expected and third-year sophomore RB Caleb King looks poised for a breakout campaign. The offensive line, riddled with injuries in 2008, should be stout thanks to the return of OT Trinton Sturdivant. I have UGA finishing 8-4 but it could easily go 9-3 or even 10-2 with a few breaks. The Week 3 trip to Arkansas is a big swing game.”

I’ll be making my annual venture out on the limb with my season prediction in a couple of weeks, but in the meantime, what do you think of what Vegas says? Will the Dogs win over 8 wins this season or under 8 wins? Feel free to comment and vote in the poll or do both.

Saint Simons, I have tried to ignore you in hopes that you would get bored and go away, but, alas, to no avail. GT caught Willie unawares last year (imagine that!), and we were nver able to adjust to a very potent (but not very imaginative) running attack. GET A LIFE, DUDE!

Saint Simons,
The AJC reports that a man was recently arrested for having sex with a horse and a dog. I know the women are ugly at Georgia Tech and you married one of them, but this is an extreme measure, even for you. Please stop embarrassing yourself and your alma mater. This problem must have started with the tickle piles while you attended (but never graduated from) Georgia Tech. You were raised better than this. You are a sick, sick man. If you don’t get help at Charter Winds, please get some help somewhere!!!

Assuming Coxs “leadership” comes through, ill say 7-5, including a big win over vandy on their home field.

michael scharff…i totally agree with you on st.simons. i must disagree on your next point. how can you be a very potent running game but also not very imaginative? if it is a plain vanila running attack, opposing coaches would not have sleepless nights trying to figure out how to stop it. coaches from all over the country follow cpj offense with trips to the campus where ever he coaches. being a dawg fan for over 35 years, it pains me to be this honest about anything involving gt.

While none of us knows what the season will bring, except Saint Simons, it is obvious of a couple of things: First, this year’s team already has more heart, desire, senior leadership, team first-me second attitude than last year’s. Second, last year’s team was lead by two highly talented individuals who cared very little about the “G” and were merely participating in a season long audition for the NFL. They were not leaders, as pointed out by a number of NFL scouts, and could not stay out of the bars and strip joints, as pointed out by other un-named players after the season.

This team will be a better team by far and I can’t wait to see them between the hedges. To absolute hell with GT and I sincerely hope one day Saint Simons grows up. If he did indeed marry a Tech girl, we only need to feel pity for him.

Paddy,

CPJ’s offense can be countered by playing disciplened, assignment football….we did not. We lacked a DL that could blow things up in the middle, and DB’s that could tackle. LSU gave a hell of a lesson on how to stop their game plan. We will be fine this year against the nerds.

With good luck, I’d say 9-3 because like the “old ball coach” says “they get a lot of good players in Athens, he just don’t know what happens to them when they get up there”!

…Dawgaholic; 8 – 4 sounds about right.

I disagree with Michael S. Willie M did not get caught by surprise – he had 11 games to study to get ready and just failed miserably to adjust in the 2nd half, though he did not miss a single tackle himself. When you are up 28 – 12 at the half, then get outscored 33 zip in one quarter you have to look at the coaching, which we have all done ad nauseum (except, of course, CMR).

Here’s hoping the Dawgs really do have a new attitude!

HEY somewherein HELL: “LSU gave a hell of a lesson on how to stop their game plan” and “playing disciplened, assignment football”.

Ha! SHIRLEY you jest?

GaTech special teams cost the Techsters 3 TDs. LSU showed they had NO answer for the GaTech offense … much like the “disciplined” Ugag squad did in the second half last year on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. Your mental-midget “scholar” atheletes got basted!

It won’t be pretty in your case. However, you did a hell of a job explaining away a total ass whipping by LSWho. They had “NO answer for the GaTech offense”? Good Lord! Have a great day….enjoy that Kool Aid.

…doesn’t matter who did what, 38 – 3 is still about as one sided a loss as you could have.

Your excuse is the same one UGA could have re: the 45 – 42 loss. You can’t have it both ways, though I know you, and the rest of the nerds like to think you can (while some guys like m, Saint Simons and probably yourself do like it both ways)! Tech got its butt kicked, and that’s a fact!

I agree, ovadatop 34. Calbe King may surprise, but something tells me that our guy is Richard Samuels or Waushan with Carlton Thomas being the incredibly effective “change of pace” guy in certain situations. I also agree with Somewherein GA. This team will be better by far than last year’s for all of the stated reasons. It’s going to be great to get back into the far more comfortable “I hope we win” mindset than last year’s “I hope we don’t lose.” I cannot wait to see the offensive packages Bobo has planned for Logan Gray and I have expectantly waited to see him get significant playing time since he got here. Richt’s “new” philosophy of getting more blue-chip recruits in early and more emphasis in general on special teams is bound to pay off as we have foundered there fundamentally of late. One more thing — Joe Cox is the man. Go Dawgs !!!!

Great post for “SomewhereinGA”, except I’d feel sorry for the Co-tech that married “Saint Simpleton”. The poor girl must get really tired of the same old pitiful sex that this unimaginative highly repetitive individual must practice. I have yet to see him post anything like an insightful post on any topic. For that matter I doubt if he is married, personally I think him and “god and greyhound” are getting it on together since they seem to be two peas in a pod.

CMR will be at UGA for a long time, which is more than I can say for Paul Johnson staying at Tech (he’ll take the job at Notre Dame first chance he get’s). The Dawgs will win an NC within the next 3 years and will again win at least 10 games this season. Joe Cox will be more of a David Green type QB and will do a great job of directing the offense which will be loaded with skill players this season not to mention a much improved “O” line. There is more and better leadership on the “D” this year which should correct many of the problems we saw last year. Both sides of the ball are going to be more disciplined this year which will result in fewer penalties that were the cause of many of our problems last year. We will not see as many spectacular plays this year as we did last year, but we also won’t see us shooting ourselves in the foot as much either. What we will see is very consistent high level play from both the “O” and “D”. This team is going to surprise a lot of people with the Bulldawg nation pleasantly surprised and our opponent not so pleasantly surprised. Mark it down the Dawg’s are going to be 7-0 when we face UF in Jax.

Go Dawgs Sic em Woof Woof Woof!!!

I’m not a gambling man. I have never been particularly good at it. Laying odds, though, on college football in the middle of the summer is like guessing how many jelly beans are in a giant jar. 8-4 sounds about right as far as odds go, I guess. Based on the g-day game, I’d say 7-5, but then that’s just for fun, right? Honestly, I think UGA will go at least 9-3 probably 10-2 with one of the losses most likely in Jax. Screw the bowls and polls, folks. This is going to be a fun season… lots of young talent, some older players with a lot to prove, some comeback stories, lots of close games. Remember how fun football season can be when the focus is on the game and the players instead of the odds and some nebulous voodoo called the BCS.

somewhereinga….you are correct. it is not unstopable but it is difficult because the defense must be just as percise in its execution as the offense in its execution. many things can go wrong on both sides of the ball. cpj just keeps running it and waits till a defender has a mental breakdown. frustrating as all hell for us uga fans. on a different front. we win 10 games this year. i believe we are loaded. please overlook us, we will whip some tail. and we will never lose to that coward in arkansas.

Somewhere, seriously……you don’t really want to go the “academic performance” route, do you?

Let’s see, the mutts managed to lead the SEC in APR despite continuing to use the NCAA mins for initial eligibility (and having to spend half of each summer on pins and needles waiting for a few of these potential Rhodes Scholars to meet those) measures). I wonder how many 12’s or 13’s (Jarius Wynn, Knowshon Moreno) Vandy players posted on that Wonderlic test.

Either all these marginal “students” are somehow transformed into part of the erudite elite upon entering The Classic City, or UGA’s academic plantation system for keeping “student”-athletes eligible isn’t so different today from the days of “Vince the Prince”.
