What do you think of paying to tailgate?

Did you hear about the ruckus going on at Auburn over the university partnering with a private company to charge for tailgating access to a new campus green space adjacent to Jordan-Hare Stadium?

The company, called Tailgate Guys, will charge from $222 per game ($1,775 total) to $535 per game ($4,275 total) for the full season for what an Auburn official called a “stress-free” tailgating experience in which tents, tables and chairs are set up and taken down for you. Tailgating for individual games is available for $300 to $1,250. Those signing up also have the option of ordering coolers filled with ice, paper products and utensils and full-service catering.

What do you think of schools charging for campus tailgating?

The pay-tailgate plan is limited to one area of the campus that was a construction site for the past two years and before that a parking lot. Auburn and Tailgate Guys have a revenue-sharing agreement, but the school maintains it’s not about the money (oh, of course not) as much as wanting to protect the park-like green space. Tailgating on the rest of the campus will remain free, Auburn says.

The move has prompted some Tiger fans to holler something other than “War Eagle!” on message boards and blogs, with AL.com reporting nearly 6,000 fans have joined a Facebook page devoted to keeping the school’s tailgating areas free of charge. Fans fear that eventually other areas of campus will require a fee for tailgating as well.

Alabama started charging for some tailgating spots last season and Auburn says similar programs are in place at other SEC schools, including Ole Miss and Mississippi State.

So far, UGA hasn’t scrambled aboard this bandwagon, but you’ve got to wonder how long before the numbers crunchers at Butts-Mehre decide such a plan would be a good way to pay for some of that postgame cleanup. Can UGA pass up the temptation to charge for those prime tailgating spots in front of the UGA Library on North Campus?

So our question today is whether you’d be willing to pay for tailgating on campus, even if it was just a limited area, or do you hate the whole idea? Feel free to comment, vote in the poll or both.

There HAS to be a market for this or else they wouldn’t be doing it (at such an expensive price).

Pay for parking, I understand. I do that at my house during Masters. I got killed this year because of the recession and the National having their own parking. With that experience, I say no. It is the camel’s nose under the tent. I wanted Tech fans to be able to understand. Once Pay-For-Tail becomes reality, thanks I just made that up. Next will come pay for entering North Campus during game day. Pay for going to the bathrooms or getting a drink of water. Pay for the handicapped access lots at the stadium, whoops they beat me to that one. This is just another way to institute class, or classless, warfare. Those that have it will pay, others will stay at home and watch the new SEC package. Just go ahead and take away as much fun as you can. They already made it Mission Impossible to have a drink at the WLOCP.

Two words, “IT STINKS”.

The school has taken so much parking from around Sanford that I’m not sure there is enough space left for it anyway. If they do get around to it, it’ll be more expensive than Auburn’s. Supply and demand, you know. Doesn’t make me wish I could take marta to a game, though. You could pay with your life for that.

I don’t know at what point the college football fan will through say “Enough!” I understand protecting the campus, but tailgating has been around a long time and the greenspaces survived before all these rules. The experience is being sanitized. Ole Miss has it right on the Grove – first come first served, make your own deal with a set up crew if necessary, enjoy the party. UGA could create a Grove atmosphere on North Campus and around the stadium, but the highest contributors can “wine and cheese” it and leave the lesser lights on the perifery. Yeah, I miss the tracks and other lost traditions!

We already pay for parking, then carry in all of our gear to North Campus and set up early. We used to get there extremely early, then the powers that be established the “No tailgating before 7am rule”.

Anyway, we always clean up our site when we pack up and head to the game. Yes it can be a challenge depending on how many bourbons and/or icy cold adult beverages I have consumed, but we always manage.

I would hate to think we would begin paying additionally for what we are doing now.

Athens already has something similiar in place, but perhaps not on the same scale that Auburn does, and it is not on campus.

We already pay to park every game and have done so for many years. Where is it free? I doubt that my wife or my tailgating group would ever pay any caterers…they like to plan the menus, decorate the table, and bring our “stuff” to enjoy. Who wants overpriced, low-quality food from some crappy caterer when you can have ribs (on the smoker for 10 hours), home grown peanuts, desserts made from scratch, etc, etc, etc. ???

Paying a fee to have someone set-up your tent and chairs, supply you with food and clean up your mess is NOT tailgating. It’s called catering.

If UGA starting charging I suspect the attendance in these areas to be about that of the “Family-Friendly,” zones they created a couple of years ago. Take some of the prime pre-game areas and essentially make it unattractive (by price or rules) for anyone to use it.

Paying to tailgate? Absolutely. It makes perfect sense for TECH TO PAY THEIR FANS to come to the games and party.

How many victories can tech boast about since about 1964 when Dooley slaughtered Bobby Dodd ever year and others since we ran Dodd off? Maybe 14?? Out of how many years? Wow. That is a program to be really proud of.

They RAN from their TRUE RIVALS ……..Auburn, Bama and U of T. Ran, then BEGGED to get back in the backdoor of the SEC and had to settle for the ACC. Hillarious that episode was. Laughable. Pathetic.

I still remember giggling when Pepper Rogers got hit in the head with his old heavy head phones. Knocked the guy nearly cold down to his knees on the sideline. How about Thanksgiving night in 75 or 76 when Rogers spoke to the Tech players at half time and it was a nationally broadcast game and it was about 43-0 at the half and Rogers could not even speak. Hillarious that was.

I have always been disgusted with the condition of North Campus after a game. Decent people would be ashamed to leave such a beautiful place covered in garbage. I am a Vol fan, but this topic is interesting. That is a lot of $$ for a spot where someone to set up tents and a few chairs for you. However, as the host of his own tailgate party each home game in Knoxville, the time that I have to put in on getting there early for a good spot would make it very tempting…

JET

Honestly, I think that this should be done on North Campus (by the arch) starting in 2009. I have been attending games from 1994 and the trash left behind on North Campus has been worse each year. While everyone should clean up and make an attempt to “leave it like you found it”, I realize that is never the case after a day of partying. However, it is easier to do massive clean up in a parking lot area rather than grass. It used to seem that North Campus was regarding as an area for alumni and folks with sense, but the last few years it has been scattered with younger students treating the area like the front of a frat house. I did the frat thing…we cleaned up after ourselves and those who use North Campus (and any area for that matter) should bring some trash bags along with them rather than throwing their trash around the area.

I say make it a pay area so that it can be treated the way it should be. The people who would pay would be people who care.

Right on Z.Itchy. North campus after a game looks like a scene right out a dingy, run-down bar after closing time. Beer bottles, half eaten plates of food and garbage everywhere. I know a few do try to clear up, but until everyone takes ownership for the campus, it will continue to be a dump after every home game.

UGA has already done that with the parking spaces. Remember that Adams said that the streets need to be clear for emergency vehicles, that was the cover up. We all know it was about revenue and paying for the parking decks themselves. Most of my friends that had RVs sold them rather than park 3 miles from the stadium. I think Adams will do it just to spite everybody. He’s not a football fan but tolerates it because of the income it generates. Can’t we pay an Ivy League School to take him?

Pay for tailgating rights is a sure revenue stream and is the way of the future. American Capitalism..Gotta love it. I didnt know my Auburn brothers had it in em.

News flash!!!! It already costs money to tailgate in Athens. You must be contributing ticket holder to get a parking space on campus. To get a spot near the stadium you are contributing way, way, way over $222 a game For those not contributing super high dollars, the assigned tailgating spot might suck or not be near your friends, thus forcing you to go to a private pay lot.. I do that and have no complaints..it is great. I pay $360 a year for 6 games. Shady spot on campus, 10 min walk at most to stadium (No,I’m not saying where). Reserved spot; doesnt matter when I get there. You get what you pay for. Its the American way.

Beer Gardens and Polka Dancing next for Auburn..? I don’t think the Miller Beer delivery guy will be stopping by the venue unless he has to make a pickup and redistribute the High Life to real life tailgaters…BTW, will frat house doors be open to receive the paying guests on campus..? If so, a bit of spit and polish shall be required.

I have always maintained that Tech could make a lot more money if they charged their football fans (both of them) to leave Bobby Dudd Stadium rather than to get in.

There is only so much poor play and effort that a fan can take and I am sure Tech’s fans would pay almost anything to get out of the stadium and away from the game by sometime in the 3rd or 4th quarter.

Unless Big Boi is performing at half time. Then both fans will be running for the gate.

Have you ever been to a tailgate at kneel and Dodd stadium? It looks like a dragon con after party; guys playing with plastic light sabers, girls that look like they’re attending an “Ugly Betty” look-a-like contest, parents shaking their heads, knowing they’ll never have grand children. And no one speaks English! It’s the only pre-game experience where Clearasil & Viagra have a booth at every home game. And if that’s not bad enough the schools reunion for graduates is known as the annual plumbers & electricians convention! Heck, Alfred E Neuman was voted best looking when he attended a tailgate on the flats for a spring game! If you yell URKEL at a tech tailgate 500 guys and 600 girls will turn around and yell back WHAAAAT? The insect tailgates look more like a bread line at the Union mission.

Never mind the mindless drivel from the Tech fans. The problem with pay for tailgating is the dislocation–the dislocated fans will flock to the other locations creating a space crunch. I already pay for my parking pass we should not be charged for tailgating.

I think it’s funny that all these other school fans have nothing to cheer about at their own school, so they come on a UGA blog to diss people. Tech fans were dormant the last 7 years and squeak out a win by 3 points, buy rings and celebrate. They say we play easy teams, although every year UGA is in the top 5 or top 10 in strength of schedule, maybe Tech people aren’t as smart as they think. UGA just assumes we will be Tech every year, they are about our 4th rival now and Tech’s number one goal last year was to beat UGA. Let’s see…win the conference, or nat’l title or win one game an hour away. Oh and they play in the Air Condition Conference, where every team is a breeze. Give me a break, go cry in your mom’s basement with your computers and lincoln logs and leave the real men to talking about football.

This disappoints me…I see this as a ‘wine and cheese’ type set up that I’d expect at Ole Miss or maybe even Vandy, but not at Auburn…just another easy mark for the folks on the Plains.

The beauty, to me, about Fall Saturday’s in the South is the ENTIRE experience – including passing down ALL traditions as my parents and grandparents did. Not just the game, but the camaraderie of the tailgate, including setting up and hosting the soiree with friends and opponents as well, and staying in the same place for years. Sadly, I guess it’s all about the money…

Oh well, the clock is ticking and the season is getting closer – Go Dawgs!!

Tech fans and what very few there are just hate the fact that their grandfather went to Tech back in the day and now they are forced to like GT because as good of a school as it is the idiots that post on here never stepped foot on campus.

If you have ever walked through Old Campus from the Library to Broad Street after a ball game, you might not be so opposed to a fee for tailgating in this area. These so called supporters of the University of Georgia leave tons of every imaginable form of trash.

My proposal would be to provide free registration for tailgating in this area. In the event the registered tailgaters left their registered area littered, they would be fined just as someone would be fined if they left beer bottles, feces and trash along a highway.

Actually, the worst ‘butt-kicking in the series would be 48-0 in 1943 (no wonder uga fans deny it happened). And Tech also beat uga 46-0 in 1905 (last I checked 46 > 44). GT has beaten uga by 40 or more points 4 separate times. The 51-7 beat down was GT’s only loss in the series by 40 or more.

People are really arguing because the University wants to make money off a spot that seems to me, haven’t been used for tailgating the last couple of years. No where in the article did it say everyone is going to have to pay for their tailgate spot. Some people prefer to use their money to be catered to. That’s their choice. Do I see it happening at UGA and do I care? Probably will and don’t care at all. To the 2 to 3 guys that post under multiple names about how this or that school sucks, get a life.

As an actual AU grad, I have to agree with TrueDawg. Vandy and Ole Miss are more the “Mimosa & Caviar” crowd – which pay-to-tailgate encompasses. DawgProps, you obviously got stuck down in the big field south of campus – well, that’s where we put the visitors. As for the marking off tailgate spots – all my Dawg buddies marked off tailgate spots in Athens the night before when we’d go up for the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry. Legal or not, they did it… so step out of the glass house.

My family, friends, and I often set up a pretty “intense” tailgate on North Campus and I have to general comments. #1 – It is appalling to see so many fans disrespect the campus and each other by littering, stealing, and otherwise defacing one of the most beautiful pieces of dirt in the country. #2 – Between the Hartman Fund, Ticket Cost, and additional revenue UGA receives from each of these games, I cannot see how paying $10k for cleanup is even a drop in the bucket. They’ve been jacking us for years by taking away use of restrooms, power, etc. I am sure it will not be too long before they start charging for our tailgate spots.

What a great way to tailgate if you are coming from out of state. For those of us who have to fly to every game we make it to each year, you don’t have the ability to load up the airport rental car with all your nonexistent tailgating equipment and get a spot to tailgate. I would love it and it would be a great way for all my friends who don’t live anywhere close enough to drive to Athens for a game to meet up at the tailgate spot ready to go.

I would think this would be a big resource for visiting team fans to have a way to tailgate without having to fly there with tables and chairs… Not sure that is a plus for our home games, but I would love it if next year I was going to fly to see Georgia smack around Auburn and I could guarantee a place to tailgate and not have to worry about anything as far as securing a spot, setting up or cleaning up.

They will eventually kill the goose that lays the golden egg; would have already done it if it wasn’t so resilient. Still angry that they changed the rules on contributions after suckering us all in many, many years ago with “the amount will never change as long as you donate”. Increase the ticket face value as much as you wish (supply and demand economics) and see how high you can push it, but don’t continue to squeeze the people who support you loyally.

I agree that just giving the universities a tiny space to propagate this crap will just lead to later being unable to tailgate within miles of the stadium. Distressing news!

Being a 2004 grad of UGA, this doesn’t surprise me. The problem with Athens/Clarke County is that it’s so small and ill equipped to handle the massive growth that has taken place in the last 10-15years. The first few years I was at UGA, there was plenty of tailgating out near the Ramsay Center, as well as on the Westside and downtown. But now new residence hall or apartment complex’s have over taken the area, and unfortunately I don’t see that getting much better. Tailgating near the over-pass of the “Loop” sucks as anyone who has lived or went to school in Athens can attest.

This is a non-story. Anyone who has ever tailgated at Auburn knows it is surrounded by acres and acres of empty space (or at least it was in ‘05 the last time Tech played em at Jordan-Hare). There will always be available tailgating if you look around or plan for it. When we play at UGA, our group of Tech fans always has our own lot not far from Sanford- $20 for Cars and $100 for RVs. Getting charged like that is pretty standard at most places.

I pay for a season parking pass at Tech but it’s worth it to tailgate from Friday night to Sunday morning.

From a business aspect, it’s a good offer (at Auburn). You get guaranteed parking (assuming a season pass) right by the football stadium. Tents, tables, & chairs supplied & set up for your group. You just bring the food & beveerage. Provided the amenities remain available for a couple of hours after the game ends, I believe there is a market for it. Price is too steep for me, but I believe alot of season ticket holders might opt for it.

Its been four years but when I last visited Auburn for a football game the parking was free. At UGA we donate to the Athletic Fund for the right to buy tickets and a parking pass. With a little extra donation we get a better parking location. It seems that Auburn’s problem is that there isn’t enough demand that they can charge like UGA, so they are trying to make a little money by providing reserved spaces with catering. Big deal. Its still Auburn.

My complaint is that Tech gets to call me a season ticket holder when I purchase tickets to see UGA at Tech. I wonder how many of us Dawgs are inflating their season ticket numbers? Heck, why don’t they do this to Jacksonville State? Forcing people to buy the entire season is just leading to littering. What am I supposed to do with the rest of these tickets?
