Cowpoke: Dogs should be ‘scared’

Preseason practice hasn’t even begun and the folks in Stillwater have already reached a fever pitch in their excitement over the opening game against Georgia. And no wonder. Because of their high-powered offense, many prognosticators are pegging Oklahoma State as probably a Top 10 team, despite the fact they’re picked third in their own conference division (such is the current media infatuation with the big guns of the Big 12).

I checked in recently on the piece I wrote a couple of weeks ago on whether the Cowboys were overrated and the Dogs underrated, and confident Okie State fans are still posting comments.

The beat writer who covers OSU for the Oklahoman goes so far as to predict a 21-point win over the Bulldogs.

And now comes a bit of bulletin-board material courtesy of Andre Sexton, a senior linebacker on the Pokes’ defense, who remembers his teammates being intimidated and scared when they visited Athens two years ago for what turned into a beatdown Between the Hedges.

This time, Sexton told the San Antonio Express-News, “Georgia’s the one that has to be scared. Not us.”

Big talk coming from a member of a defense that ranked 94th nationally last year and in the past has been the Achilles heel that has kept the Cowboys from breaking through to greatness, most recently falling apart in the second half of their Holiday Bowl loss to Oregon.

But T. Boone Pickens U. went out during the offseason and hired a big-name defensive coordinator: Bill Young, who made his name working under former Ohio State coach John Cooper and most recently coached at Kansas and Miami.

It remains to be seen what sort of change Young has wrought in the OSU defense, but he’s at least got his players believing it’s not so much that they were bad last year as it was they were just playing in a super league.

As Sexton told Yahoo Sports: “People were bashing our defense and saying we’re not any good. It’s not that we’re not any good. We’re just playing against the top talent week in and week out. If an SEC team played in our conference for a year, they’d see. They’d totally respect it. It’s something that’s hard to understand unless you’re in the middle of it.”

Oklahoma and Texas may have the most respect outside the Big 12, but “Oklahoma State is up there with those guys now,” Sexton declared to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

And star quarterback Zac Robinson told the paper, “I’m real excited to see our defense play this year. I saw the improvement in the spring. … There are a ton [six starters] back and obviously Coach Young coming in is going to help us a ton with the track record he has and the defenses he’s coached. … I know if our defensive guys buy into his stuff, we’re going to be just fine.”

OK, we know Robinson, running back Kendall Hunter and receiver/punt returner Dez Bryant are among the nation’s best offensive players and OSU is going to score points. And, granted, Young’s more simplified schemes and emphasis on fundamentals probably will result in improved play on the defensive side of the ball.

But the Pokes allowed more than 400 yards a game last year, ranked 107th nationally in sacks and are having to replace three starters in the secondary. Can one 62-year-old man on the sideline calling the defensive signals make enough of a difference that someone thinks Oklahoma State is three touchdowns better than the Dogs? I’m not convinced.

What do you think? Should Mark Richt’s team be “scared” going into Stillwater?

Good thing the games are played on the field and not in these silly blogs… On Paper OK State should win… Great skill players, at Home, new Stadium. The games are no played on paper either.
Should Georgia be scared? With South Carolina, Arkansas, LSU, Florida Tennessee and Auburn on the schedule. I think not. Should they be prepared yes… focused…. yes… pissed of about last season yes… but scared, not a chance… The fact that Tech fans would like us to lose every game is not new and changes nothing… They are more interested in what happens to the Dawgs than they in their own program.

This is the kind of game Georgia should love… great on the road record under Richt 30 and 4…. underdog…. everybody healthy…Great opportunity to make a statement. It doesn’t get any better than this. OK St. was really hyped the last time we played them as was Boise State and Hawaii. Hype means nothing.
The Truth- good explanation of why OK State should be good. However, we had a #1 draft pick and a #12 draft pick last year and that doesn’t guarantee you anything. Should be a great atmosphere and a great game. May the best team win.

Oh, and I forgot to mention a team called Oklahoma State in my last post. I believe they had a spread offense two years ago when we played them and that many of our current players probably remember it. Archie is a goob.

let the cowboys &there fans talk all they want.Maybe our coachs and players are consentrating on improving from last year and playing one game at a time. We should be better on both sides of the ball. But you cant control injuries. And if we lose a couple of starters on D-line or couple of running backs it could be another frustrating year.

I really do not expect to see another Boise type game. I believe the cowboys will play us close into the 3rd quarter, at least. The only way we blow them out early is if they come out and play like we did last year against Bama. GO COWPOKES AND DOGGIES!

Its comical how dawg fans sound JUST AS DELUSIONAL about beating OKSt as they did right before:

1. the Bama game
2. the Florida game
3. the GT game

In fact, GA was sooooooooooo confident they were gonna beat Bama,
they even broke out the black jerseys. CMR even “joked” on TV about the so-called “funeral” comment.

It was DEFINITELY a funeral!

Better wear your black to Stillwater fleabags ’cause its gonna be another funeral for ya.

Why do we continue to draw some favorable correlation between how the Florida defense performed against OU in the BCSCG and how our offense will perform against Oklahoma St?

The Gators ended the season #4 in ppg (12.9) and #9 in total defense.

They were far and away a more superior defensive unit than ours, yet we hang our hat on the fact they held OU to 14 points?

This is apples and oranges, guys.

I certainly hope our team is not looking at OSU as another Boise St, Arizona St, or Hawaii….if so we will be leaving Stillwater with an L.

Agree with your point. I don’t understand why people are drawing comparisions between the OK State game and Boise State game. First of all, we’re playing AWAY. Secondly, OK State is a legit BCS team. And thirdly, Boise State sucked while OSU should be good.

Trade School Junkie seems to be suffering from a bit of selective amnesia. There wasn’t a bigger group of smack talking idiots on the earth than the Techies before that Chicken Bowl last year. After all, they had beaten Georgia by 3 whole points!!! No way LSU could hang with the ACC Coastal Division runner ups!!! They were unstoppable. Then the game started and the big mouthed Techies were sitting there in the Dome with their thumbs up their butts and tears streaming down their faces, just like they always do when they start feeling real good about themselves. I can’t believe that you have forgotten this Trade School Junkie. It wasn’t that long ago.

You make an excellent point. I think the UF/OU score thing is an argument about the quality of competition in the respective conferences. You are absolutely right, though, it doesn’t amount to a hill of beans on 9/5.

Yeah well if OU and Texas cant stop our running game I doubt UGA will. OU’s DLine is the best in college football and we ran for 187 yards on them last year. Again, UGA fans need to realize, your defense is good, but it is not as good as OU and Texas. Both of these teams have higher rated classes particularly on the dline and lb. OU held florida to 24 points. Florida scored 49 on UGA last year. OU has all-americans on the Dline. UGA doesnt. Owens and atkins are good, but they are not at the gerald mccoy/demarcus granger/brian orakpo/sergio kindle level. They are solid college players who will work in car dealerships after their UGA careers are over.

UGA fans are delusional.

I look forward to watching the midget prince miller trying to defend our receivers lol. We’re just going to run right over your team. and what good is a decent oline when you have crap running backs which is the case for UGA. Just garbage back there, won’t do a darn thing. OSU’s oline>>>UGA’s oline. The only reason you think your oline is better is because it is UGA.

The Truth…. thanks for explaining the situation to us. Now let me explain something to you. What keeps OK State from being like Oklahoma and Texas is depth. Georgia has more depth too. That’ll be the difference.
Texas beat Oklahoma. Texas came within one play of losing to Texas Tech who got clobbered by OLE MISS. So making all of these comparisons means nothing. When Ok State got to the meat of their schedule last year they lost pretty big three time and then got beat in their bowl game. We won’t know who is really delousional until the game is played will we?

Chris, you may have seen OSU get destroyed by a Zac Robinson led Cowboy team two years ago. That was Robinson’s first start as a Cowboy and we lost 41-23. A year later we thumped Troy in Stillwater 55-24. Same Zac Robinson. Things change.

Wil Walton, I don’t know where you got you O-Line and D-Line sizes for the Cowboys but your numbers are about 30 lbs light. Our offensive line averages about 308 and the defensive line averages about 272.

Long Dawg, Texas did lose to Texas Tech by one play. And one of the reasons the Cowboys are excited this year is the improvement in depth that we have developed. We can now line up 2 deep on both sides of the ball without the drastic drop-off that we have had in years past.

My prediction- Cowboys 38: Georgia 27

I hope the dawgs are taking Okie St. seriously. I believe the dawgs will be victorious, but that is why we play the game. As most games it will come down to how we play in the trenches. UGA O-line from top to bottom should be much more athletic than OSU D-line, UGA D-line should prove to be very solid against Okie St. O-line.

Last year was dismal. My dawgs lost to 3 solid teams and beat a bunch of second tiers. Bottom line. Last year’s team was all attitude, no heart. And, the number one ranking (totally undeserved) with the two big stars only served to distract. I will grant them the injury factor, but I hope a lot of lessons were learned by coaches and players. Last year was a dismal failure. Michigan State… who cares? Just like hawaii… who cares?

UGA needs to take this team seriously. They need to take every game seriously. They will not win a single game because they think they should. The dawgs need to play solid, fundamental, and flawless every game this year. I think OK ST is a pretty even match up. It will be within a TD either way.

How did we get from “next year looks bleak; I hope we just win 7″ to “we are going undefeated, upsetting the Gators, and playing for the BCS” in two lousy months.

This is the best running team you have faced in several years. Way better than georgia tech, with superior personel and dangerous threats in the passing game. Our recievers dont play unless they learn to block.

Basically, what is going to happen in this game is OSU is going to run, run, run the ball. On the other end, we are going to stop your running game and force cox to win it with his arm. So what it will all boil down to is this, can OSU run the ball consistently on UGA, and, can Joe Cox beat us with his arm. Both sides know this, it is no secret. Gundy has already said the number one priority is to stop the UGA running game. If UGA holds OSU under 150 yards rushing (something nobody has done in quite some time), that will be key. Because then the question becomes, can we make enough plays in the passing game with only one proven reciever, and can our new wr’s shake off the jitters rapidly enough to make plays. The exact same holds for UGA, who themselves have basically one proven great wr and a lot of unproven potential. I like OSU in this game simply because we have proven commodities in the backfield, UGA does not, and this is a home game for OSU.

Offense sells tickets, defense wins championships! We couldn’t stop the common cold last year, but that is history. No one truly knows anything about this upcoming game, except it’s huge for each program. Each team will be prepared. Everyone on this post can recite statistics, regurgitate prospects and potential NFL prospects from each school. Knowing UGA fans realize Gundy is a very good coach, Hunter is a talented running back, Robinson is a very good QB and Dez Bryant is clearly a top tier national wr.

That said, one thing I really like about the Dawgs this year, the silence out of the team. That tells me, they are working and working hard to regain some respect. Having travelled to see some of our out of conference opponents, namely West Virginia and Virginia Tech of recent match-ups, let’s stay classy Dawg fans. Each of those opponents were well represented with dignified fans. And it sounds the same is true for the Cowboys faithful. Back in ‘04, made the trek to Fayetteville (almost Oklahoma) and received one of the most memorable compliments from an Arkansas student after the game. We won 20-16 and he and his buddies tried to start some smack talking. My friend and I smiled and declined. He responded, “That’s the thing about Dawg fans. Their team kicks your ass, but in a polite way.” Words to cherish. Stay Classy. God Bless and Peace.

I’d offer to take the bet on the 61 point spread from the stepchild at GT but I know he doesn’t have the cash. More importantly, how are the RINGS progressing? LMAO, no higher compliment could ever have been paid to CMR and the dawgs than the fact that the GT coach recognized that their win was a once in a decade experience, worthy of being commemorated-since it certainly won’t be repeated by anyone currently enrolled. I’m embarassed for the tech fans-what a huge admission!

I guess, like always, it will get settled on betweeen the goal lines. No doubt that they are a great team, We really don’t even deserve to be on the same field with them. There is no way we can cover the wideouts, tackle the QB, or RB. We have absolutely no offesnsive line and no defense. We have a QB who only has game experience against one big12 team, and he threw 2 TD passes in the 4th quarter. I’m sure we should not have been in that game either and all that was just another fluke. We are not used to playing in big games, especially on the road when the colors are orange. We should be scared to death. We have nohting for them at the linebacker positon, and our kickers are only 2nd year men with nothing to show as a track record to go on. You Okie guys are right, we should not even be on that field with your team. That is kind of like what Michigan State big 10 said last year too!

Truth, I hate to admit it but you are right. We have never played a team that runs the ball like Ok State, or that passes the ball like Ok State, or that has an O line like Ok State. You guys are surely so much better than UGA that we should not even show up for the game. We should be scared to death, and you are right, we are not used to playing big games on the road. I’m sure we will never be able to compete against OK State. I am just totally in awe of how good your team is becoming.

Wil Walton, you had better double check your source. The Official OSU website lists 21 offensive linemen weighing a total of 6327 lbs for an average of 301 lbs per player. This includes incoming freshmen and other players who won’t play. Our starters average closer to 310 lbs.

the truth

Please do come back here AFTER the game and let’s do some comparisons to your pre-game analysis and the post-game results. There is usually one just like you on the Georgia blogs before every game. One who has all is stats and already won the game on paper. Strangely enough we never see them again after game time.

I remember in 07 there were several of you Pokes on Georgia blogs and actually had me a bit more concerned that we could lose that game. We all know how it turned out. Few teams could run on our weak injury riddled defense last year so keep throwing last years stats out like you are and bank on them. Personally, I think you are headed for major disappointment. Top to bottom the Big 12 just doesn’t stack up to SEC. Texas good one year and maybe OU the next. No big feats there. The SEC year in and year out field 5-6 quality top 10 caliber teams of which Georgia is one consistently. Your running, spread offense will be shutdown. Your defense should actually improve from last year but it won’t be impressive and will be unable to stop Georgia’s offensive attack which will come at them from every direction and with more speed that you’ve seen since we played you last. Please do come back after the game and lets discuss it

July 30th, 2009

ARdawg-I’m not “The Truth”, but I would take you up on coming back here to discuss the game if OSU loses. But only if you will agree to come to the website and discuss the game if OSU wins. Deal?

I’m not making an predictions on the game, but at least The Truth does quote real statistics whereas you quote opinions such as “Your running, spread offense will be shutdown” and “Your defense should actually improve from last year but it won’t be impressive and will be unable to stop Georgia’s offensive attack.” Those things may come to pass, but just you saying them won’t make it so any more than the stats that The Truth quoted will make OSU win.

Dawg Fans,

Please understand that most if not all but a few Cowboy fans understand and respect the deep strong football program that Ga will be bringing into Stillwater. Also, understand that every Cowboy fan although maybe not represented here believes more than ever we have a good team that hopefully will win or at least battle the dawgs to what should be a great game. As a longtime Cowboy fan we have suffered through many many many losing or less than respectful seasons, we have a very good team but I can guarantee you that everyone of us isn’t underestimating the Bulldogs and that goes for the players also.

Until the Cowboys can prove over and over it can win the big games against the top notched programs, all of us Cowboy fans will do what we always do whether we win or lose and that is be top notch fans and support our team.

Here are some interesting things about OSU that you may not know.

A true Cowboy fan never roots or would chant Big 12, we don’t root for each other in the Big 12 ever.

A true Cowboy fan despises OU football but mostly there fans, I guess winning brings a disrespectful arrogance but they are over the top.

Oklahoma has dominated the Cowboys except during Les Miles tenure, Les was actually able to beat the Sooners twice.

Texas has dominated the Cowboys since the inception of the Big 12.

In the 80’s we had coaches named Jimmy Johnson, Dave Wannstedt, Larry Coker, Butch Davis and a kid named Barry Sanders backing up another kid named Thurman Thomas and guess what we still lost to Nebraska and Oklahoma.

In closing, this is nothing more than newspapers trying to make a story and find something to rally the dawgs, story or not, the Cowboy fans and players have the utmost respect and regard for the Ga football program, we have more to gain then lose playing the Bulldogs because if beaten irregardless of preseason polls, etc, true Cowboy fans have experienced missed expectations for many many years and this will be just another missed expectation which quite frankly pains me to say but we are quite use to it. However, don’t underestimate our will to win and our hope to prove that we are on our way when we play in Stillwater but in winning or losing you will meet no more respectful fan base.

As a side note,I did attend the game in Cowboy game in Athens and sadly many of the Dawg faitfhful could learn a little about respecting the competition because it really is just a football game and there are many more important issues to get worked up over.
