Cowpoke: Dogs should be ‘scared’

Preseason practice hasn’t even begun and the folks in Stillwater have already reached a fever pitch in their excitement over the opening game against Georgia. And no wonder. Because of their high-powered offense, many prognosticators are pegging Oklahoma State as probably a Top 10 team, despite the fact they’re picked third in their own conference division (such is the current media infatuation with the big guns of the Big 12).

I checked in recently on the piece I wrote a couple of weeks ago on whether the Cowboys were overrated and the Dogs underrated, and confident Okie State fans are still posting comments.

The beat writer who covers OSU for the Oklahoman goes so far as to predict a 21-point win over the Bulldogs.

And now comes a bit of bulletin-board material courtesy of Andre Sexton, a senior linebacker on the Pokes’ defense, who remembers his teammates being intimidated and scared when they visited Athens two years ago for what turned into a beatdown Between the Hedges.

This time, Sexton told the San Antonio Express-News, “Georgia’s the one that has to be scared. Not us.”

Big talk coming from a member of a defense that ranked 94th nationally last year and in the past has been the Achilles heel that has kept the Cowboys from breaking through to greatness, most recently falling apart in the second half of their Holiday Bowl loss to Oregon.

But T. Boone Pickens U. went out during the offseason and hired a big-name defensive coordinator: Bill Young, who made his name working under former Ohio State coach John Cooper and most recently coached at Kansas and Miami.

It remains to be seen what sort of change Young has wrought in the OSU defense, but he’s at least got his players believing it’s not so much that they were bad last year as it was they were just playing in a super league.

As Sexton told Yahoo Sports: “People were bashing our defense and saying we’re not any good. It’s not that we’re not any good. We’re just playing against the top talent week in and week out. If an SEC team played in our conference for a year, they’d see. They’d totally respect it. It’s something that’s hard to understand unless you’re in the middle of it.”

Oklahoma and Texas may have the most respect outside the Big 12, but “Oklahoma State is up there with those guys now,” Sexton declared to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

And star quarterback Zac Robinson told the paper, “I’m real excited to see our defense play this year. I saw the improvement in the spring. … There are a ton [six starters] back and obviously Coach Young coming in is going to help us a ton with the track record he has and the defenses he’s coached. … I know if our defensive guys buy into his stuff, we’re going to be just fine.”

OK, we know Robinson, running back Kendall Hunter and receiver/punt returner Dez Bryant are among the nation’s best offensive players and OSU is going to score points. And, granted, Young’s more simplified schemes and emphasis on fundamentals probably will result in improved play on the defensive side of the ball.

But the Pokes allowed more than 400 yards a game last year, ranked 107th nationally in sacks and are having to replace three starters in the secondary. Can one 62-year-old man on the sideline calling the defensive signals make enough of a difference that someone thinks Oklahoma State is three touchdowns better than the Dogs? I’m not convinced.

What do you think? Should Mark Richt’s team be “scared” going into Stillwater?

Should be a good game. I think this is a different situation than Boise State and the last Okie State game. Both of those were non conference openers against teams that were supposed to upset UGA and both were lopsided victories for the DAWGS. Those games were at home and that is a big advantage to Georgia for a out of conference team having to play in front of 90,000 plus SEC fans.

With this game being on the road… I expect a close game and am looking forward to it!

I don’t know about being scared. I posted elsewhere that OSU returns one of the top o-lines in the country, loaded with talent and experience. OSU returns players with 5500 career rushing yards. UGA returns around 500 career rushing yards. OSU returns a quarterback with over 6000 career passing yards, UGA has a qb with around 500 career pssing yards. OSU, for all of its defensive woes, returns 10 of its top 12 tacklers. The stats are skewed because last year we played 6 of the top 10 offenses in the country including two 5000 yard passers in case keenum and graham harrell, plus colt mccoy, chase daniel, sam bradford, and the guy from oregon.

so yeah, if I was UGA, I would be a little concerned. OSU is not bad at stopping the run game. Our problems came with offenses that threw out of the spread which UGA doesnt really do.

Considering that the SEC beat both Oklahoma and Texas Tech last year in bowl games and the fact that top to bottom the SEC is a tougher conference than the Big 12 I’d say that Sexton’s comments about walking a mile in their shoes is way off base. It should be the other way around. Oklahoma State should try playing through our schedule and see how they do. On the other side of the coin is that the Big 12 in general has such high scoring offenses because most of them have such poor defenses as shown by their performance when they have to play SEC teams which tend to have very stout defenses. UGA’s defense will be able to slow down the Oklahoma State Offense, but their defense will amount to only a minor speed bump when they try to stop our offense. UGA is going to surprise a lot of people this year when they discover zero drop off in our offense and that our defense has rediscovered their junkyard dawg mentality.

Dawg’s win 38-24.

This is going to be a joke!! Not a Ha, Ha joke, but a demolition of sorts.

Ugag WILL get “gunsmoked” in this home opener, adding more evidence on why they will not schedule “big boy” opponents outside of the SEC.

Ugag would drop GaTech from the schedule if they could. If it wasn’t an in-state school Ugag would choose someone like William & Mary for their season-ender.

I would like to see who Ugag schedules for home-openers in the future. Certainly not high caliber teams after this sure debacle.

Are they serious? They play top talent week in and week out? The two talents in their conference are Texas and Oklahoma. Try playing Florida, LSU, Alabama, and Ole Miss. We have way more talent in the SEC that we play week in and week out. If they played in our conference for a year they would get killed. I guess we will just have to show them on September 5th. How did Florida’s D fare against one of those mighty Big 12 offenses? I think the real team in Oklahoma scored 14 with a Heisman winner at QB. We probably don’t have Florida’s D, but I’m pretty sure Ok. St. doesn’t have Oklahoma’s Offense from last year either. I think our offense may have something to prove, and with a veteran o-line, they may be able to do it.

UGA will not schedule bigboy opponents? All 4 non conference games are against teams from BCS conferences. Can any other team from a BCS conference say that? There is no “SW insert state name” on our schedule. And then of course there are the 8 games played in the toughest conference in college football (3 straight national titles for the SEC). If you want to say the dawgs haven’t lived up to expectations in recent years, that’s a legitimate argument but to bash the schedule this year is nothing more than pure STUPIDITY!!

Jay Root- our HOME opener is against South Carolina. Not Okie State…that is THEIR home opener.

2010- Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns (following the UF route here…)
2011- Louisville (at the time this was made, Petrino was there and this was going to be a big deal)
2012- Ole Miss as of now, but they will find someone to fill the top spot to avoid 3 straight away games to start the season
2013- North Texas (again, the UF route…)
2014- Clemson
2015- Carolina
2016- probably Oregon

So, 2/3 of these are potentially strong opponents. We all know that most schools open the season against smaller schools…. most everyone does it with a few years sprinkled in where they play someone big. UGA/Damon Evans made the point to get bigger names for OOC games and I think its working out just fine. They haven’t even played the game yet so let’s just wait and see before we talk about UGA tucking it between the legs and running away from big OOC games.

And UGA will never want to drop Tech. Get real…..

Our OL will probably be one of the top 5 in the country. Anyone that know’s football understands an offense is built around a good OL. The difference in the OK.ST. game will be at the line of scrimage. We have skill position players that are as good or better than OK.ST. the difference will be up front on the line. I look for UGA to open big running holes for our backs and for our OL to protect Cox when he passes. Our DL is big and quick, not the kind of quickness that OK.ST. is familiar with. We will win the game by 10+ points, remember, the DAWGS are one of the best teams in the country when it come to playing and winning on the road.

The Cowboys sound a little full of themselves. I hope they continue to expect UGA to show up and “be scared”. Just a thought, but I’m not sure that any stadium in the Big XII invokes fear in opponents, as much as Sanford (or many of the SEC stadiums) have the ability to do so.

Scared? No
Concerned? Yes

I will reserve judgement on our offense until I see some of fall practice, but I will say that what I saw at G-Day did not necessarily instill me with a sense that we will be an offensive juggernaut.

How will Joe react in Stillwater? Will Caleb King, or someone, step into the RB role? Perhaps a true freshman?

On the defensive side, I’m assuming we will be better, only because I don’t think we can be that bad again. We just have too many athletes not to be better, and hopefully we used up all of our inury mojo last year.

However, I think the only offense we saw last year that rivals that of the Pokes is Florida….and I remember all too well how that game turned out. Their trio of QB, RB, and WR are fast, fast, fast.

Here’s a refresher course from 2008:

OKST:41 OK:61 (Game was OKST:41 OK: 44 with 9 minutes left in 4th Qtr)

FL:24 OK:14
(How come UF could only score 24 vs OK, when OKST scored 41? Hmmmmm?)

FL:49 GA: 10 (Only 10…with Stafford & Moreno? And Cox is gonna be better than Stafford? Man, Talk about DELUSIONAL !!)

So, what does all that mean?

With the SAME RECORD-SETTING OFFENSE and a NEW DEFENSE for 2009, AND ALL THE BCS CHIPS SITTING ON THE TABLE…it means OKST is going to
flat-out DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE–STROY the dawggies.

OKST will win this…in a LAUGHER. Frankly, I dont think dawgs will even score in the first half. This game will be OVER at halftime.

HC Gundy knows he NEEDS to make the BIGGEST statement about his program, his 2009 BCS chances, and his CAREER…with THIS GAME.

He’s got EVERYTHING he could possibly ask for RIGHT NOW, for this season.

If his team is in the BCS hunt at years end, since the Big 12 uses the BCS ranking to decide division tie-breakers (like how OK got the BCS bid over Texas last year) he will need THIS GAME as a DECISIVE KEY WIN to maximize his BCS ranking.

OKST is playing FOR ALL THE MARBLES…THIS YEAR.

Gundy will have to win CONVINCINGLY, which means, not only will OKST will need to run up the score, but his defense will need to play lights out, which it will.

Prediction: OKST:66 GA:16

It will be a COMPLETE & TOTAL BEATDOWN IN ALL ASPECTS OF THE GAME.

It be a TIVO CLASSIC for years to come.

There is no such thing as a cakewalk SEC schedule. Let some of these BIG XII teams play an SEC schedule and see how they like playing actual, real-life defenses.

The Truth, yep, OSU has a talented OL returning, but so does UGA. However, the difference will be the OSU OL vs. the UGA DL. IMO, the UGA DL is better than the OSU OL. And the UGA OL is MUCH better than the OSU DL. BTW, UGA OL average 304 vs. OSU DL average 243, and OSU OL average 273 vs. UGA DL average 269. The line of scrimmage is where this game will probably be decided (provided that UGA can finally get some pressure on their talented QB).

This Okie St hype sounds all too familiar. How many of these high-powered non-conference offenses will the Dawgs have to shut down before people start to realize it’s not smart money to bet against the Dawgs in these situations. Boise was supposed to score at will, AzSt – remember all the R.Carpenter hype?, Hawaii – Colt Brennen(sp) was supposed to come in light up the scoreboard, and provide “the most intriguing bowl match up in recent history”, OkSt a few years ago, same thing. Then the media trying to save face, puts the teams they spent so much time building up, down by saying they were obviously overrated, didn’t belong on the same field, were over confident, basically any excuse but the fact that the dawgs came to handle business.

I just hope the Dawgs will get the credit deserved for beating Okst, but chances are we’ll stay ranked wherever we are, maybe move up a spot or two, while okst will drop out of the top 10 like a rock.

Mark it down, Dawgs will win big!

By the 2nd quarter it will be 14-0 UGA and the cowpokes will abandon the running game and start throwing every down.

Trade school junkie, put the slide rule and abacus down. I know you left brain analytical types think everything football included, should be as easy as a=x +y -z, but this is the real world. If it were that simple to predict winners and losers there would already be a formula in place. Since you like looking at things from a math perspective. I will go along with your little analysis if you can explain this one to me:

UGA beats LSU 34-14
UGA loses to GT 42-45
GT loses to LSU 3-38

How does that work? Let me help you, UGA/GT is a rival game with many players who played with/against each other in HS. Usually rival games are close fought battles. hince OK/OkSt being at 41-44 with 9 minutes left. What does any of this have to do with this year?

My question is what are you techies going to do once you come crashing back down to reality this year? Hope tech has a good sucide watch program in place, by some of the postings, you guys are going to need it.

Lets set the standard for DELUSIONAL.

Here’s 2 of the most memorable Fearless Friday Forecasts that SEC/UGA homer Barnhart posted (and universally accepted by ALL uga fans):

1. (Before the Bama game)
Saban will tell his players to smack Georgia in the mouth on the first possession to see how the Bulldogs will respond. Georgia’s young offensive line will find the going kind of tough against that Alabama defensive front.

But Bulldog quarterback Matt Stafford will step up and give one of his best performances at Georgia. This will be a big time football game. Georgia 21, Alabama 17.

2. (Before the Florida game)
The way the Gators have been rolling up points, it is tempting to pick Florida. They have the revenge factor on their side but I think that lasts about two possessions for a game at this level. I like Georgia because of their balance. Knowshon Moreno has 10 games of over 100 yards at Georgia. The Bulldogs are 10-0 in those games. After Saturday, Moreno will have 11 games over 100 yards and Georgia will have its second straight win over the Gators, a first since 1988-89.
Georgia 37, Florida 34.

So, uga fans were, Barnhart among them, were ABSOLUTELY CONVINCED of victory in two games that turned into the 2 biggest BEATDOWNS of uga in recent memory.

Hows that for DELUSIONAL? dawginlex = dawg in la-la land

November 29 No. 3 Oklahoma L 61-41 9-3 (5-3)
December 30 vs. No. 17 Oregon* L 42-31 9-4 (5-3)

It seems they lost against every ranked opponent except MIssouri. I know. I know. Troy, Baylor, and Iowa State all have some explosive offenses.
