Cowboys don’t want red and black horde

One of the more notable aspects of last year’s Georgia-Arizona State game in Tempe was the large percentage of the 71,706 seats in Sun Devil Stadium filled by fans cheering for the Dogs.

Talking about that game to the Greater Atlanta Bulldog Club this week, UGA athletics director Damon Evans said, “I think we showed the people out in Tempe, Ariz., what football is about. When you have 25,000 Georgia Bulldogs invade the Phoenix and Tempe area, it is something else.”

Something that the folks at Oklahoma State in Stillwater apparently don’t want to see.

OSU only provided UGA with 5,000 visitors tickets for the Sept. 5 game at 60,000-seat Boone Pickens Stadium, newly renovated to the tune of $283 million.

And the match-up with Georgia was the only home game this season for which the school didn’t sell any single-game tickets.

If you didn’t get one of the 5,000 tickets sent to UGA (which are sold out), the only way to see that game in person is to buy an Oklahoma State season ticket, which goes for $479 to the general public, or go to a ticket agency. StubHub.com currently has tickets for the game ranging in price from $117 to $706.

It will be interesting to see how many Georgia fans wind up in the stands for that game. Besides the ticket situation, Stillwater is not as attractive a destination as Tempe was last year or as Boulder, Colo., will be next season.

Are you going to the Bulldogs-Cowboys game? If so, tell us in the comments how you got your tickets and what you paid for them. And if you usually travel with the Dogs but aren’t going to this game, tell us why.

Earlier you referrre to OSU as “T. Boone Pickens U.”

And now, you seem to take issue with their stadium renovation
…”to the tune of $283 Million.”

Pickens is of course an OSU alum, so, why such much bitter envy?

I’m not a huge fan of the ticket policy. That policy was in effect for the Ou game last year and i didn’t like it then either. I’d rather have the UGA game under ticket policy crap than the Texas game though. I don’t think OSU officials chose UGA b/c they were afraid of a huge UGA contingent though.

Everybody has their limit and OSU exceeded mine. $100 for a ticket, plane fair, hotel room, the pleasure of going to Stillwater in early Sept and sweating to death, just pushed me to the limit. I would rather save my money for a nice bowl trip. Hope everyone who goes has a great time. See ya in Athens Sept 12.

Apparently the party place is called “The Strip”. Washington Street between 6th Street and University. I guess that would be the comparable Pub Crawl in dowtown Athens. The population on non game days is a shade under 40,000. Eskimo Joes apparently has some awsome chili fries. Since it is Oklahoma, I imagine you can find a decent steak. Any Cowboys care to comment on the food and beverage choices feel free.

St. Semen’s…..you seem to be very fixated on one particular game. I agree, it was an anomaly, so you should hold on tightly that memory…that is if you can let go of your Mr. Wiggly long enough to hold onto any thing else.

OSU is smart to restrict ticket sales to the Georgia game. In the past, you had to buy season tickets in order to purchase Georgia tickets when we played at Grunt Field….probably still do.

Do y’all still have “rats” at Tech with those little goofy yellow caps? Or have you switched to turbans? or …..just plain ol’ towels?

You could actually put the city of Stillwater into the stadium and have room for the Dawg fans. Apparently, just like Tech grads, Oklahoma State grads do not stick around town after graduation. Stillwater must be slam packed during a home game weekend.

I gotta say as much as I love the Dawgs and the SEC I think the ‘S-E-C’ chant is pretty lame. I don’t care to chant for the likes of Florida while watching my team. And what does the ‘Overrated’ cheer say about your win? That you just beat someone that’s not very good?

A couple years back, wife and I were returning from a three week driving trip out west, Colorado, Arizona, Las Vegas, etc. Stopped at a “Sonic” off I-40 around Ok. City, didn’t realize we had to eat in the car. We toughed it out, 104 degrees in the shade of the canopy! So, rather sit in the comfort of my air conditioned house and watch the game on hi-def with the cold beer in the fridge and bathroom down the hall. By the way, that 104 was around the 1st of Sept.!

lot’s of national stories about Az. game last year……it sounded like a home game for Dawgs….Yes, I was there, sweating ( dry heat my arse )…100 at kick off…….25,000 dawg fans ( Tech can’t draw that for a home game) it was great……..really heard dawg fans as game was in hand….they were stunned.
Okie St. will be also…………..So, I knew they would limit tickets, although i would say we would only have 10-12 k there…….It is Stillwater…..no Scottsdale in site……

Going. Wife is an OSU grad and I’m a UGA grad. We bought 4 OSU season ticket packages (2 other friends are coming with) for $270 per. They have 7 total home games including Texas, Missouri, TTech and Colorado. We felt we would be able to sell the remaining tickets and either make a small profit or at minimum break even. Stillwater is a good little town and it will be a fun time.

Stillwater is a great little town, and the campus is beautiful. This is the second year in a row that they’ve restricted tickets to one of the bigger home games in order to develop their season ticket sales. It’s actually an idea that started with Iowa/Iowa State, I believe. It’s really too bad Mr. King didn’t want to do any more research into the issue.

“The strip” (just south of campus) is the happening place to be after the game with its selection of bars, and Eskimo Joes or Hideaway make for a great pregame meal.

Oh, and while 60k fans isn’t a large stadium, you should also keep in mind that the stands are extremely close to the field. You can find countless quotes from players and coaches in years past complaining of feeling like the fans were “right on top of them”. It can definitely be intimidating if you’re not careful….

wow all you guys are talking a bunch of crap about OSU….personally I hope they lay you all flat on your @sses but I too think they are overrated. You never know though, just because your in the SEC and they are in the Big 12 means its an automatic win. Its kind of funny that fans of a certain team in a certain conference seem to cling to ideas of conference superiority when the team they support fall short. 70 percent of the SEC National Titles belong to three teams…LSU, UF, and Alabama.

Then what was he asking smart guy? Let me guess. He seems to think that a bunch of fans chanting “overrated” at the game might actually hurt our strength of schedule? LOL. Does the BCS formula take that into account? Will our SOS ratings take a hit the more we chant “overrated” at the games? I know what he was asking clown and it was a dumb question. I’ll even answer his other dumb question about what it says about our win. It doesn’t say a damn thing about our win. That’s not the point. It says the other team is crap and the media is crap for thinking they were good. That’s all it says. Its one of the more powerful, demoralizing, and humiliating chants in all of sports if you ask me. I love it. You are dismissed. Good day.

For all SEC fans, in preparation for future blogging, an ACC alumnus offers the following edification: the singular of someone who graduated from an institution is alumnus for male, alumna for female. Alumni is plural and masculine (or mixed), alumnae for a group of females.

Well then they just need to say that don’t they? What is classless about it? I’m sorry but is this pop warner league? I could have sworn we were talking about grown adult men. I don’t think its classless. Throwing things on the field like Tech fans do is classless. So is stealing the jerseys of opposing teams’ players like Tech fans do. A little “overrated” chanting is not classless. Its just honesty. There is nothing classless about that.

I really don’t have that much of an issue with the ‘Overrated’ cheer. I just think it says we are downgrading the quality of our win by saying it was against an inferior opponent. Nothing more. No BCS implications intended. Let’s not go off the deep end on this one. No biggie.

I’m more bothered by the ‘S-E-C’ chant because I thing we should be saying ‘U-G-A’ instead. Like I said before the ‘S-E-C’ chant is a cheer for Florida et al. And from the reactions I’ve gotten out here on the left coast many fans find that one to be more classless. I certainly want our conference to look strong but it gives this ‘holier than thou’ kind of vibe to fans of other conferences. Don’t get me wrong. I love the SEC and think it’s without a doubt the best conference; I just don’t want us to look arrogant. But I concede I’m probably in the minority on this chant.
