A fresh approach could pay off big

Too often in recent years, Georgia’s special teams, especially on kickoff coverage, have been, well, not special enough. Too many walk-ons, not enough truly special athletes on the field. And that tendency was exacerbated last year by the rash of injuries that reduced the pool of available players.

This year, Mark Richt is taking a step in the right direction. He told the Greater Atlanta Bulldog Club last night that he doesn’t plan on redshirting any incoming freshman skill players, with the exception of quarterback, and that he plans on giving those freshmen early playing experience on special teams.

The idea is that this will have a twofold benefit: The special teams get the “runners” and “hitters” that they need, and the freshmen learn what they’re supposed to do. “They’ll help us on special teams, and they will grow as players at their positions, too,” Richt said.

Putting more Grade A talent, even if it’s green talent, into our kickoff coverage sounds like a great idea. And as Richt said in the Athens Banner-Herald, some of these kids have the potential to be starters before the season is over. “Sometimes you’re two weeks in and you’re like, ‘They’re not ready, they’re not ready.’ Two more weeks, he probably is ready. Two more weeks after that, he may be your starter.”

This freshmen-will-play edict also means Washaun Ealey will get a crack at tailback. And Richt said it includes defensive backs and linebackers, though the need in those areas is not as pressing. I still think Branden Smith is unlikely to get much playing time in the secondary, though he could be a big contributor on special teams (possibly returning kicks) and probably will get a look at receiver in special packages, since he wants to play both ways. But the Dogs are so loaded at linebacker that, barring injuries, you wouldn’t expect to see freshmen Mike Gilliard and Chase Vasser in the mix.

BULLDOG BITES: Richt told the Banner-Herald that he signed junior college kicker Brandon Bogotay on the basis of film study alone and said, “Even if he doesn’t become the kickoff guy, I think he’ll create the competition to make us better.” … Richt also told the ABH he hopes offensive lineman Josh Davis, recovering from surgery on both shoulders, will be able to play by midseason. … The Macon Telegraph takes a detailed look at how the injury problem spurred Richt to lessen the intensity of practices last year and how he says that hurt the Dogs, particularly on defense. … ESPN.com’s Chris Low, noting that the SEC has renewed its deal with the Georgia Dome for another five years, wonders why the conference doesn’t just make Atlanta the game’s permanent home. “Few events in college football have been as successful or have generated the electric atmosphere that the SEC Championship Game has in Atlanta,” Low says. “Anybody who has been to the game knows what an event it is every December in the Georgia Dome. It’s the closest thing to the BCS Championship Game that I’ve witnessed, and the Georgia Dome is the perfect venue.”

Yeah our special teams sucked last year. The frustration was compounded by how awesome the Gators were at special teams, with Urban Meyer coaching the squad himself.

I had begun to wonder if UGA’s staff understood that special teams are one-third of the game. It appears they do understand that. Great news, Bill.

another thing playing our young guys will do is show the HS kids that UGA plays freshman. by most accounts, that was the selling point for guys like Marlon Brown, Orson Charles, and even Da’Rick Rogers in this class. love the idea, i don’t think CMR will ever fully get over redshirting knowshon. come to think of it, i may never get over it either!!

Btw, Tech can have the 3-stars from Atlanta. We’ll just have to settle for the 5-stars from Florida.

I agree completely. It really seems like a no brainer…to the extent that I kind of already thought they did this. The only drawback I see is that special teams is always the kind of place you let the blue colar players get some face time. The kind that have worked hard and paid their dues to get some kind of playing time so their family in the stands get to see their son’s jersey on the field. I know you have to do whats better for the team. To a small extent getting those type of guys in there, even briefly, is good for the team.

The season for the Dawgs will be interesting. Hopefully the freshman running back will be another Hershel Walker and will be allowed to prove same.
So why not allow one, or both, of the freshman quarterbacks playing time? Chances are the “red head” will not do anything outstanding in the coming year—-hope I’m wrong on that one.
It’s good to see the coach changing his tune on freshmen playing and on the importance of practicing hard. It will be a long time before we can forget the missed tackles by the defense last year.
Go Dawgs.

At tailback we have three very decent SEC backs. Carlton Thomas is very small but he can fly and can keep em on D off balance in certain situations. I see him gaining 300- 400 yards rushing and another 300 running after a little toss pass to the flats. He is a huge add on for UGA this season. Sat out last year, when we had more backs w/ “experience.” Florida kid and he can really play big and fast.

Also, the new Frosh kid Ealey will be a huge boost. He can carry about 30%-35% of the load as a running back and then, Caleb and Richard Samuels, can carry the additional 40% of it. The fullbacks are gonna be very, very active this year with rushing AND receiving the pig skin. Between the fullbacks and Carlton Thomas, I see a renewed emphasis on smash mouth football with QB tossing them out wide to a Carlton T. or over the middle to the fullbacks after peeling off of a block, for a 38 yard gainer time and time again. Up the middle with a Richard Samuels and then hit Carlton in the flats and let hism SCOOT or hit the big fullbacks that will be wide open coming off of a block. Chains will be moving.

Then, once UGA is in the desired rhythem, we hit an AJ or a Marlon Bown or a M Moore or an Orson Charles for the big one. TD !!! Rontavious Wooten will also be a big, big boost for UGA. Do not forget that we have the young man from N Georgia (Tavarres King) that was highly, highly regarded. I see him a a posseiong type of receiver. He caught a slant in the bowl game and took off for a huge gainer. He is gonna be really good.

This will be a fun year with all new stars and that is why I love the Dawgs. Anyone to belly ache about UGA is just jealous. Let the Gators have their NC. My family are all from that state and left it. Says it all.

Like what I’m hearing. This is definitely a good move, and something F.Beamer has done for years in putting some of the best athletes on sp. teams. Great way to get the youngsters used to the speed of the game as well.

The QBs should be redshirted. The shirt can always be pulled should Cox or Gray get hurt. I know everyone is anxious to see Murray in action, but to think he can come in and be better than Cox or Gray is just not realistic. I’m not sure Murray beats L.Gray out next year. That being said I believe he’s a great talent, but he will get on the field when it’s his time. I think J.Cox is going to pleasantly surprise a lot of folks this fall.

Harry Dawg, as much as I hate to be negative, can Richt promote, and stay with a smash mouth offensive style? “One” of my philosophical disagreements on running a football program with CMR is he seems locked in the style and glitz method of offensive football. He grew up with and promoted it with Florida State.

We were competetive with Alabama early when we were running the ball, playing them jaw to jaw, as well as the Gators. Second and four early agaisnt Bama after a Knowshon run of 6 yards, then pass, pass, pass. Bama’s rush ate us up. Getting cute in the red zone early against the Gators. I’m all for a balanced offense but IMO, CMR likes the HR’s to much. And with Willie’s defense last year, the last thing you want is to give the ball to the opposition. This isn’t a recent trend, this goes back years, the most prolific example I can give is in 05, I still believe we lost the AU game because we threw 3 straight times in the 4th quarter, took no time off the clock, and gave the ball back, then the lightening strike for AU on 4th and ten.

Hope this year goes a little better. I’ve kept my mouth pretty much shut out of respect to the UGA nation but I’m about to burst, I can’t take much more of the total breakdowns. Top level programs don’t do that. I believe this is a big year for the Richt program. More letdowns like Bama, and UF, and unfortuately Richt will be on the hot seat. I’m an eternal optimist but I’m also a realist. Living in Mobile, I get a little different perspective on what the world thinks of Richt as a coach.

Thought Bradley’s take in response to a poster that underscored my contention that both of UGA’s offensive and defensive lines have the potential to be better than any given team on any given Saturday this year. Specifically, he, Bradley, said he saw Georgia as a ‘finesse’ team – I assume on both sides of the ball. If he means that we haven’t resorted to ’smash-mouth’ football over the past couple of years, e.g., line it up and drive it down the field, he may be right. With a Matthew Stafford and receivers like MM and company, why would you…and even Moreno worked better in the open and relied on his own, personal, ’smash-mouth’ to gain extra yards.

With a line of scrimmage that can dominate, it’s a no-brainer to simply defeat your man and make tackles or gain yards. I don’t think lines that average 300+ lbs. are much on ‘finesse’, and with a stable of running backs and a couple of superior full backs, along with, potentially, an all-star tight end, we’ll see about that ‘f’ thing.

@ugablows: key questions for you: has any school ever brought worse talent on to their campus than the NATS? Sure, they overperform, but bringing in everyone’s rejects ensures you’ll do better than expected, even if still very weak. Your school is Vandy, Duke, and Wake all rolled into one. Athletically, not academically. When UGA brings in top players, they have nowhere to go but down. USC “underachieves” every year they don’t win the NC, right? Without Richt, those players don’t make it onto campus in the first place.

Mark Richt made a bad decision by reshirting Moreno. He will make another bad decision when he redshirt Aaron Murray. Aaron had the best spring of all the qbs. Here are Aaron and Mettenberger spring stats:

Aaron Murray – 13 of 31 passing for 325 yds and 3 touchdowns, no INT

Mettenberger – 2 of 18 passing for 43 yds, with 2 interceptions

Richt said that both qbs had a good spring. GIVE ME A BREAK MAN! Take a look at what each qb did on G-Day, starting with Cox:

Cox – 9 of 16 passing for 105 yards

Gray – 9 of 13 passing for 91 yards

Murray – 3 of 5 passing for 62 yards

Mettenberger – 0 of 3 passing for 0 yards

If Murray had 6 more attempts, he would have gone over 200 yards passing. That would have made Cox look bad if Richt had left Murray in the game. Like I said, Murray is the best qb on that team. Richt is cheating that young man. Murray parents should encourage their son to transfer so he can shine somewhere else.

Playing a true freshman QB in the SEC is a sure fire way to lose games. You can play a freshman some, but not all the time. Tebow played some. Stafford started late in the season but the Dawgs still lost 4 games. He lost the Kentucky game with stupid decisions.

If Cox implodes, Murray will get his chance. I think Cox fits this team much better with a great OL that can control the ball and an improved and deeper DL.

If you would go over to USC website, you will find that Pete Carroll has already place Matt Barkley as his #2 qb. How do you think he got moved up to the #2 spot? Because he out played the other qbs during spring workouts.

Aaron Murray out played Cox, Logan and Mettenberger during spring workouts but CLUELESS Richt wants to redshirt the kid. If Murray can make plays against our defense he also can make plays against the SEC defenses. The kid got guts. Don’t underestimate a true warrior.

You gotta give Cox a chance. It is unfortunate that the opener is not an OOC patsy but that is the way it is.

I don’t understand your clueless richt comments. He saved Shockley until 2005 and won the SEC. He has won 82 games in 8 years including the 1st 2 SEC titles in 20+ years. He has consistently made good decisions while at UGA.

I use the term CLUELESS because Richt make inappropriate moves. It was inappropriate to redshirt DJ Shockey because he was the best qb. It was inappropriate to redshirt Moreno because Moreno was the best rb. It was inappropriate to not change defensive coordinator after West Virginia beat us in the Sugar Bowl. It was inappropiate not to give our team full practice last season. It was inappropiate to let Matthew Stafford change plays at the line of scrimmage 95% of the time even when he didn’t help the cause. I can go on and on. It’s about time for Mark Richt to start making appropiate decisions so we can win a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, starting with Aaron Murray as our starting qb.

Despite this turning into an insane asylum, has anybody given any thought to the fact that the SEC has just signed a HUGE contract with ESPN?? Each school will be allotted a certain amount of money AND playing on TV time, so that will attract more great players from a wider range of places. In turn, this may prove to provide some parity in our league. In a way, this may be a double edged sword. But to me, the more SEC, the better!!!!!!!

Greene ends up the winningest QB of all time and saved Shockley’s rear end in 2004 against GT when Shockley had his chance. Richt was right.

Richt admits that Moreno should not have been a RS in 2006.
Jury still out on WM.
Stafford gets picked 1st overall in NFL draft.

You want Richt fired because he hasn’t won a NT?
Do you want to go back to 6-6 seasons?
He has us in the hunt and I trust he will do the right thing as he has proven.

You want to win a national title in the SEC?
You will NEVER DO IT PLAYING A TRUE FRESHMAN QB AS YOUR STARTER.

You don’t have to worry about Murray being unprepared…the kid already knows the playbook and is helping others…he lives to play football…BTW: he went head to head against Barkley at the Nike’s 7on7 and destroyed Barkley’s team (as well as the others)…as the “Ball Boy” at the Elite 11 between his soph/jr year he stood out, even against the college QB’s helping out…this kid is the real deal and should be allowed to “EARN” the position, not given, but if he outplays everyone then he deserves to lead the team…this isn’t H.S. where you you become the starter just because you’ve been around the program and “paid your dues”…he got a big jump by starting school last spring and is way ahead of the curve of those starting in the fall…Cox sounds like a heck of a nice guy and I’m sure that either he or Gray could get the job done, but they aren’t on the same level of Murray…just open the position up and give everyone a chance to compete for the starting job…

UGA Grad ‘08 ….. humor me, 2005 Auburn 31 UGA 30 Willies defense blows and blew the game on a 4th and 1000 miles. A pathetic South Carolina team puts UGA in the SEC championship game. Sugar Bowl , West Virginia 38 UGA 35 …28 -0 before UGA knew what hit them! Willies defense blows

2006 Tenn.51 UGA 33 in Athens. The first of a SEC East 6 game losing streak. Homecoming Vandy 24 UGA 22 ouch. Florida 21 UGA 14 This game not even close as score indicates Fla. raced out to a 21 -0 lead. Kentucky 24 UGA 20 Willies defense blows again.

2007 SC 16 UGA 12 in Athens 5th straight SEC east loss. Stafford and Moreno couldnt score a TD on a pathetic SC team. Couldnt stop SC late in the game. Tenn 35 UGA 14 6th straight SEC loss. Willies defense blows again. Vols raced to a 28 -0 halftime lead. Vandy 17 UGA 20 Dawgs needed a lucky fumble to defeat Vandy. Team and program dips to new low by dancing on Vandy logo at midfield.

2008 SC 7 UGA 14 heavily favored dawgs needed lucky fumble to hold off SC. Blackout Fallout Bama 41 UGA 30. Bama beatdown 31 -0 halftime lead and cruises to victory. Willies defense blows. Fla 49 UGA 10. Need I say more? Kentucky 38 UGA 42. UGA pulls it out with a 1:54 left in the game and barely hangs on. Willies defense blows. GT 45 UGA 42. Blew a 28 – 12 halftime lead. Two weeks to prepare for a freshmen laden team. Willies Defense blows! Yes humor me UGA Grad ‘08!

Yeah, you would have said in the spring of 1979 that we couldn’t win a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP with true freshman Herschel Walker too, right?

Never said I wanted Richt fired.

Detroit was crazy for taking Stafford. They should have taken Aaron Curry.

DJ Shockley was not the starter in 2004. You perform better and systematically when you know you’re the man.

I’l take CMR and his staff. He is learning, and when something happens he tries to make it better. I wonder if he will want our team to get rings for beating a team, that is not even in our conference?

I’m can’t believe I’m getting into this argument with Fools Gold but here I go against my better judgment. According to Fools Gold’s logic any program that plays down to its opponents’ level or loses games it shouldn’t is an underachieving or mediocre program. However, by that logic ALL of CFB’s big programs underachieve. USC always seems to some fluke PAC 10 team they shouldn’t. Oklahoma loses to Texas all the time as well as their BCS bowl game for how many years in a row. The Gators have lost to an SEC West opponent they should have beaten almost EVERY year. In your own example, USC east beat the mighty gators then came within a blocked field goal of doing it again in 2006 when UF won their Nat’l Championship. Texas lost to Texas A&M in “07 and “08. In addition ALL of these teams have escaped from opponents they should have beaten handily. Even the 2001 Miami team got a huge scare from Boston College.
Here’s the reason the above phenomenon happens. A) It’s extremely difficult win more than 10 games in a row in CFB. B) If you’re a good program you will be favored to min most of the games you play. Therefore when you lose, many times it will be a game you are expected to win.
Good programs win large numbers of games year in and year out (10 plus) and annually manage to have wins in big games over quality opponents, which UGA under Richt definitely does. You can see from my previous post that UGA has won many big games EVERY year under Richt. You don’t make 3 BCS bowl and SECCG appearances and have 2 SEC titles in the last eight years without doing something right.

Also to reply to Fools Gold’s original argument, i believe Richt has lost a combined 4 games to USC (2001, 2007),Vandy (2006), Kentucky (2006), Ole MIss (None), Arkansas (none), and Miss. State. Sounds like taking care of busines to me.

I can’t believe this mutt actually wrote an article on how Rickt entering desperation mode and playing a bunch of true freshmen somehow equates to things “paying off big.” Yes uga fans, the margin between you and a championship has been the lack of true freshmen Rickt has been playing.

Yes, all you’ve needed is to play more freshmen, and to get rid of that nasty #1 pick QB and your superstar running back. You guys are going to be BETTER this year! More freshmen, less Stafford and Moreno– Rickt’s championship formula.

I mean, Cox is such a great leader! He got like 106 votes for leader from his teammates!

Desperation mode? Playing freshmen that are capable of making a contribution is desperation? Clear thinking people would call it smart. Ever heard of Julio Jones or AJ Green. Wait till you see Branden Smith and Orson Charles and Marlon Brown and Authur Lynch and Rantaveious Wooten. These boys can play and they can play now. You’ll get to see them.

Jerry,Florida has better talent and is in Georgia’s head that’s why Richt is 2 and 6. We’ve had our chances and just haven’t taken them. Blow outs were caused lack of on field leadership, effective defensive adjustments and turnovers. No one wins NC championships every year. I believe two in a row is the record. That is why, as good as UF is, the odds are they will not win another NC this year. I’d like to see them do it if they win the SEC Championship this year because I always pull for the SEC. Georgia will be better this year than last year. Folks will forget Stafford and Knowshone pretty quick.

jerry, get off your high horse. in 06, your mighty gators backed into the championship game after WV & USC choked the last week of the season. Anyone with a brain knows that not only do you have to have your team in position to win a NC, but there is a certain amount of luck that goes along with it. If you win a NC championship with 1 loss, chances are you needed some luck along the way to get there.

jerry

First of all where do you get off that I said anything about being a fan of UF? Secondanly, no one answered my question except excuses, excuses, excuses. Talk about luck in a NC game, how many times do you recover your own kickoff on your opponents 2 yard line? UGA punted more times than they had first downs, were out gained by almost 2-1, and this against a poor offensive team that ND had that scored 3, yes 3 points against of all people Ga. Tech. Of course UGA’s quarterback could have been a Joe T. III’s clone. But you are right about one thing. UGA sure as hell has never won 2 in a row or ever even been in 2 in a row. And why does UF have better talent, better field leadership, defensive adjustments, and force more turnovers? Because they are not willing to just win enough to be content with sellouts.

The gators have won 3 championships in the past 13 years. Why do the gators act like they won all 13? I’m pretty sure when you list the champions in the other 10 years, they don’t say FLORIDA.

Since Richt’s arrival in 2001, UGA has won the same # of Sec titles as Florida has. You have to win the SEC before you can win anything else. Florida had ZERO football tradition and ZERO titles until the 1990’s. UGA’s tradition goes back 30 years prior to Florida winning anything.

It had been 20 years between SEC titles for UGA when the 2002 title happened. The coach responsible is still in Athens and I expect he will win another one or more. If that happens, the national title is a possibility.

Just save me from the “Florida invented football” crapola.
