101 Reasons to Be a UGA Fan

Does anything with that elongated “G” catch your eye? Does the sound of the Redcoat band quicken your pulse? Do the words “hunker down” bring a smile to your face? Do you have numerous articles of clothing that are red, black or red and black?

University of Georgia

University of Georgia

Congratulations, you’re one of us! And if you are, you know that there are many reasons for your devotion to all things Dawg. Starting today, just for fun, we’ll run down 101 of them — not in any particular order. They’re all part of who we are. Here are the first 20 …

1. “It’s Saturday in Athens!”

2. Uga VII and all his predecessors. The most recognizable — and, as Sports Illustrated said, the best — college mascot in America.

3. “The ball ain’t heavy.”

4. Erk’s bleeding forehead.

5. The Arch.

6. “There goes Herschel.”

7. The most beautiful stadium in college football.

8. The “G” helmet design — even better than Green Bay’s original and the best-looking in all of football.

9. Hines Ward.

10. Silver britches.

11. It’s still “10 to 9″ in Dallas.

12. Ringing the Chapel bell after a victory.

13. David Greene and “70-X-Takeoff.”

14. “Unbeaten, untied and unbelievable!”

15. North Campus in the spring. Or fall. Or any time, really.

16. How many other teams have a Beatles song named after them (”Hey Bulldog”)?

17. “Run, Lindsay!”

18. We don’t wear orange! Or blue, green, purple or yellow (ugh)!

19. A drive down Milledge Avenue during Pledge Week.

20. “Between the Hedges.”

Neither is specific to football, but definitely two things that make attending school at the University of Georgia a unique experience.

July 28th, 2009

Keep ‘em coming Bill. At this rate you’ll have the Techies lying in the fetal position in a pool of their own vomit by Thursday. They hate this stuff. It absolutely destroys their souls. You see, its not the fact that we’ve beaten them like a damn drum 75% of the time we’ve played them in the past 4 decades or so. Although I’m sure that causes them some pain, we all know Techies really don’t care that much about wins and losses. As long as they’ve got their myth of academic superiority as a pathetic crutch, their fine with an occasional 9 win season here and there. No, what really eats at their soul is that we simply have more fun than they do. That’s all it comes down to. Georgia football is a party and they were invited. Boo freaking hoo. Cry me a river babies. True story.

I have never heard so many unique accents from people with so few teeth. If you want a real football experience, check out Penn State, Texas, USC, Florida or Tennessee (not necessarily in that order). BTW, FL/UGA isn’t that great a game or rivalry. They beat a healthy OU team by 10 when Florida attacked the 3rd string middle linebacker the whole time and needed 3 horrible play calls at the goal line to beat them by 10. You will see Texas vs Florida in the championship this year and it will be a game for the ages (but I think Texas comes out on top barely). I am not a Big 12 fan or an SEC fan (I went to Emory so I have no allegiance to any school) just a college football fan that sees through the bs.

L-Dawg, that goes back to what someone said about having a mullet. What your not saying is that every house you see with a Red G on the mailbox leads into a Trailer Park. That is what makes me so mad about UGA fans, they make the state look sooo stupid and then act like it is something to be proud of. I try hard to defend the state of Georgia, but sometimes it isn’t so easy. Thanks for living up to the stereotype.

I ultimately want to end up back in Charlotte (great city but small) or Dallas (I hear it is great) so maybe I will end up listening to you dawg man. Well there are more than 101 reasons:

1. Supporting a program that is in the tank and has only 1.5 national titles i 116 years of football.

2. Taking a successful coach like Jim Donnan away from Marshall and showing the world why the UGA football program can wreck a coach’s career.

3. Watching all the rednecks dress down in their blue jean shorts, goaties, and cell phones on their way to Sanford Stadium to witness another beatdown (UF, UA, GT, and Vandy).

4. The best reason is to watch UGA losing to Vandy at homecoming..this was priceless.

5. Paying $5k to $10k per year for season tickets (booster fees), only to end up in the Boise Idaho Potato Bowl.

Wow…this could go on and on…..

First of all Roll Tide and thank you so much for beating the pure living hell out of the Dogs last year in front of a national audience. You just proved why ESPN avoids Athens when it comes to College Game Day, because UGA typically gets thier ass#$# ripped.

Keep up the good work, because UGA will not see another SEC title as long as Meyer, Miles and Saban are around. UGA should take a page out of Gainesville’s, Baton Rouge’s or Tuscaloosa’s book and create a championship program.

What happens is the players are under-coached, overrated and lack the practical discipline to avoid penalties. It is all about show and mouth in Athens, vs. backing it up like you do in Gainesville.

That is the largest embarassment in this state, is UGA’s inability to back up their mouth. The Alabama and Florida game was a total football debacle to this state and just proves that CMR is being out-coached, but those idiots will just give him another raise. Because, they do not want to go back to the Donnan and Goof years.

Gatorman

You are dead on. UGA only cares about and SEC ring every 4-5 years (or longer) and beating UF, which can only happen about every 10 years or more.

Have you noticed that no one can defend this program with the important stats like national titles are brought up? UGAY fans start hammering the BCS system, and fail to blame their program.

I have yet to ever hear a UGAY fan criticize their program, only make lame excuses. I guarandamntee you a New York Yankee or Boston Red Sox fan will tell you when their organizations sucks, but I guess the South is just all too polite.

Gator Trauma

It is a said state of affairs when UGA fans can only reach back for the all-time record against Florida, instead of hammering their coach and program.

The problem with the program lies in the political correctness of the Athletic Department and the lack of foresight to land a qualified AD who can make the critical decisions. It is like CMR is “hands off” and please do not make him mad, because he will leave for Miami.

Look, CMR is using the UGAY program as a minor league training program to move a a better and larger program like Miami, OU, or even USC. Spurrier said it best when South Carolina beat UGAY at home and said “it is not like we beat some powerhouse.”

There is no respect for this program, and even Montana could see it during their visit. It is a very redneck and hostile environment to anyone who does not wear blue jean shorts, wife beater shirts, and has a chaw of Redman in their mouth.

bobo the interception idiot,

We all get it. You don’t like UGA. Go blog where your team’s blog is. You are so stupid it is unbelievable. You only judge UGA because of national titles and you expect someone to respond and try to justify the lack of national titles? That makes UGA a sorry, second tier program?

You are too stupid to even respond to.Your stereotypes need some upgrading there bozo. You are so stupid, you can’t even bash some team that you hate in a way that makes any sense.

So you won’t end up like the interception idiot spewing venom on a UGA blog, refusing to acknowledge who his team is and refusing to admit he has never played a quarter, a down, or an inning of any sport in his entire lifetime.

Keep quoting Spurrier einstein. 1-3 vs richt at SC about to be 1-4.
0-2 start for the obnoxious ole ball coach and he will be playing golf on Saturdays in the fall.

Talk about living in the past. SOS has won two big games at SC in 4 years, UGA and Fla. The rest is crap including losing to Vandy 2 years in a row. and having a losing record against clempson.

The fact that you continue to quote him speaks volumes about you, your intelligence and your character.

UGA wouldn’t let Spurrier handle the water, much less coach. He can realistically start this season 0-4. My prediction is:

NSCU 35 SC 21
UGA 21 SC 7

He resigns and goes golfing.

My 17\ year old son is a Gator a fan and has been sinc he was 6 years old. I love him and forgive him for his traitorus allegience. He actually claimed that he was born in Gainesville, Ga, when he was born in Athens, GA. But we both agree, SEC over everyone else, And if he idolizes Tebow, all I can say is, that’s a young man to pattern your life after.

Tebow, I hope you win the Heisman this year, but I also hope you lose to Georgia by the score of 77-0 this year.
