101 Reasons to Be a UGA Fan

Does anything with that elongated “G” catch your eye? Does the sound of the Redcoat band quicken your pulse? Do the words “hunker down” bring a smile to your face? Do you have numerous articles of clothing that are red, black or red and black?

Congratulations, you’re one of us! And if you are, you know that there are many reasons for your devotion to all things Dawg. Starting today, just for fun, we’ll run down 101 of them — not in any particular order. They’re all part of who we are. Here are the first 20 …

1. “It’s Saturday in Athens!”

2. Uga VII and all his predecessors. The most recognizable — and, as Sports Illustrated said, the best — college mascot in America.

3. “The ball ain’t heavy.”

4. Erk’s bleeding forehead.

5. The Arch.

6. “There goes Herschel.”

7. The most beautiful stadium in college football.

8. The “G” helmet design — even better than Green Bay’s original and the best-looking in all of football.

9. Hines Ward.

10. Silver britches.

11. It’s still “10 to 9″ in Dallas.

12. Ringing the Chapel bell after a victory.

13. David Greene and “70-X-Takeoff.”

14. “Unbeaten, untied and unbelievable!”

15. North Campus in the spring. Or fall. Or any time, really.

16. How many other teams have a Beatles song named after them (”Hey Bulldog”)?

17. “Run, Lindsay!”

18. We don’t wear orange! Or blue, green, purple or yellow (ugh)!

19. A drive down Milledge Avenue during Pledge Week.

20. “Between the Hedges.”

UGA just named #4 party school in the nation. 3 of the top 4 were SEC. None of the top 20 were ACC. I know UGA is proud of this and so is the ACC. Different strokes for different folks. Taxpayers should quit supporting party schools and insist on solid academics.

There are no academics, unless you count DVM school, which is the top in the nation. I have to give them that one, they can sure give a cow an enema.

Funny how you mention how stupid all UGA grads are, then point out that we dish out up to $10k for season tickets. Seems like UGA grads have plenty of disposable income. I’ll put my paycheck up against yours any day and I graduated in 2004.

Gator boy is too enthralled with the number of jorts in his “closet” than to be gramatically correct on a UGA blog. Why is he here?

I guess the bathrooms at Sanford aren’t large enough to accommodate the toe-tapping festivities the gnats are accustomed to engaging in. Oh well, can’t please everyone.

I’m shocked but I read through every reason and unless I overlooked it, only one post (TrueDawg) came close to the core reason it’s great to be Georgia Bulldog: RED AND BLACK! The best colors in the entire world and we get to wear them on game day! It doesn’t get any better than that.

GAGirl14477, you mean the one that repeats the same line over and over and uses the tune to the Battle Hymn of the Republic, an old battle tune for the NORTHERN army? I wouldnt be too proud of that one.

July 28th, 2009
2:01 pm

GetOverIt, who cares that it was used by the northern army. It is time to move on from the civil war. It does repeat the same line over and over and over again but at least that way they can remember the lyrics. O, and the woofing at kickoff is obnoxious.

I would say the things UGA can hang their hat on are Herschel Walker, dominating GT, a charming southern town in Athens and preseason rankings.

Yes, we do set the SEC championship as our goal. In this day of the Bull Crap System (BCS), you don’t really know if you can set a goal for the “national championship”. You win, and if you luck out..you might make it to the big dance. Maybe. Possibly.

Only if USC and Ohio State aren’t undefeated.

Walking behind my young grand son to get to our seats when a tech student SLAPS the grandsons head and knocks his hat off. Then watching the tech student cry when this 60 year old man confronts him. Real class act picking on a 10 year old. Real chicken when it man up time.

I absolutely love how every UGA fan says the BCS is bull crap. You know what, it is, BUT Tennessee, LSU and Florida haven’t had any problems winning in it while playing for the most part the same teams UGA does.

First voters were biased against UGA now what is it, are the UGA hating computers self aware voting against Georgia at all costs? Give me a break there will always be an excuse, MAYBE you just aren’t a championship caliber program…get over it.
And to all you losers living in 1980 I wasn’t even born then and Im out of school and have a job, so thats saying something about how long ago that was. I would rather be the best since 1990 than irrelevant since 1980. UGA has been an after thought for my entire life time.

July 28th, 2009
2:45 pm

The BCS is crap but UGA holds themselves back more than the B(C)S does. Everyone in the SEC should be for a playoff. IF it really is as good as proponents say it is, you will have an SEC playing an SEC for the championship. If the SEC isn’t, it works itself out. Either way, the creme rises to the top.

The dawgs need to learn how to spell. Anyway, I like how what was meant to be a pro-UGA post has turned the complete opposite way. I guess UGA doesn’t have that many reasons to be a fan.

oh and something else funny, UF has basically claimed the only habitable place in Georgia (Atlanta) for its self. The largest Gator club in the country and the largest concentration of UF alum in the nation. Atlanta is home to the 3rd most fortune 500 companies which attracts UF grads and repels UGA alum. But there are some here i mean after all someone has to fix my plumbing when it breaks, and change the oil in my car.

Uh, smart boy, go gator: Jacksonville, FLORIDA is also home to the largest Bulldog club in the country. What’s your point? And guess what loser, UGA grads run more of those Fortune 500 companies than the slimy cheese balls that you are. Get your facts straight and get your head out of your jort covered butt. The Florida grads are the ones working at the Varsity (didn’t know it was a Fortune 500 Co.) and Atlanta area WalMarts.

I knew UGA fans were ignorant but you might take the cake. I don’t know any college grads that would be working along side you at the varsity especially from a top 15 public university. Also have you been to Jacksonville? Thats where the jorts rumors come from and now it all makes sense, it was Bulldogs all along. I’ll trade you Jax for ATL any day, but atleast now i know where the stench was coming from.

Have you been to Atlanta lately? Not something to brag about there hot rod. Oh, and that “jort” thing is not a rumor. Ask anyone outside of your little circle of cheese ball lizards about jort wearing, mullett headed, N. Florida rednecks. They will all tell you that that is synonomous with Gator fans.
