101 Reasons to Be a UGA Fan

Does anything with that elongated “G” catch your eye? Does the sound of the Redcoat band quicken your pulse? Do the words “hunker down” bring a smile to your face? Do you have numerous articles of clothing that are red, black or red and black?

Congratulations, you’re one of us! And if you are, you know that there are many reasons for your devotion to all things Dawg. Starting today, just for fun, we’ll run down 101 of them — not in any particular order. They’re all part of who we are. Here are the first 20 …

1. “It’s Saturday in Athens!”

2. Uga VII and all his predecessors. The most recognizable — and, as Sports Illustrated said, the best — college mascot in America.

3. “The ball ain’t heavy.”

4. Erk’s bleeding forehead.

5. The Arch.

6. “There goes Herschel.”

7. The most beautiful stadium in college football.

8. The “G” helmet design — even better than Green Bay’s original and the best-looking in all of football.

9. Hines Ward.

10. Silver britches.

11. It’s still “10 to 9″ in Dallas.

12. Ringing the Chapel bell after a victory.

13. David Greene and “70-X-Takeoff.”

14. “Unbeaten, untied and unbelievable!”

15. North Campus in the spring. Or fall. Or any time, really.

16. How many other teams have a Beatles song named after them (”Hey Bulldog”)?

17. “Run, Lindsay!”

18. We don’t wear orange! Or blue, green, purple or yellow (ugh)!

19. A drive down Milledge Avenue during Pledge Week.

20. “Between the Hedges.”

Does “hunker down” bring a smile to your face?
Yes, it sure does, I laugh like hell every time I hear it.

My #1 favorite part of the season is watching the Bulldogs self destruct once again. A great man (Steve Spurrier) once said, “UGA gets great recruits, something just happens them when they get to Georgia….”

My #2 favorite part of the UGA season will be listening to the Gator games live on local Atlanta radio!

Happy Halloween!

“The most beautiful stadium in college football.” That’s a joke. Restrooms from the 1950’s that hold about 5 people, and concourses the size of a small sidewalk so 90,000 people have to move out like cattle.

I’d rather have a ghetto-looking stadium than go to a school in the ghetto. And, Tech’s stadium, or any the vast majority of other college stadiums, aren’t exactly high-quality. I saw one of your obese fans take a nasty tumble in the upper deck because it’s so frickin steep. It’s like walking up attic stairs.

True story. I bought my nephew a week at GT baseball camp that was held about two weeks ago. We saw the locker room and “Beat UGA” was posted all over the place. It was so pitiful, but now I understand why M, Saint Simons, etc act the way they do. They are red and black with envy.

Georgia fans just make us laugh at this point, do you think youre three point win bothers us now? Hell our 39 point win isn’t even important at this point we play on a national stage and win championships, beating a mid level SEC team by 39 is barely worth remembering.

Best part of being a Florida Gator, running out of room on the walls of your 92,000 seat stadium for all the championships you have won.

Tailgating under a crystal blue sky on a cool October day with family and friends while listening to the pregame show on the radio; walking down to the stadium from North campus and seeing a sea of red in what surely is the most beautiful football setting in the country; the aroma of a cuban and bourban in the air; taking pride in hosting another GREAT SEC school in what will be another classic matchup; listening to Larry’s opening line………”get the picture”; the anticipation of what might happen every time Buzzy,Hershal,Garrison or Knowshon touches the ball; the feeling of complete satisfaction after a win; the walk back through campus with my parents where we stroll by the old chemistry build steps on North Campus where they met back in 1951; watching my son ring the bell; listening to the 5th Quarter show on the way back home; the delight in reading the Sunday AJC like savoring a fine meal where every word has meaning; and finally, mentally gearing up for another week in preperation of doing it all over again the following weekend. These are some of my reasons as to why “It’s great to be a Georgia Bulldog!!!!”

horrible article. What a fluff piece. Most beautiful stadium in the country? Ha! It isn’t even the most beautiful stadium in Georgia (Bobby-Dodd) not to mention the fact it was practically a library when i went this season. I have never heard so many unique accents from people with so few teeth. If you want a real football experience, check out Penn State, Texas, USC, Florida or Tennessee (not necessarily in that order). BTW, FL/UGA isn’t that great a game or rivalry. TX/OU blows the pants off of it

Gators fan, you have three titles, you aren’t exactly running out of space. you are both full of it. UGA is a horrible choke artist and Florida has no real history. Both are redneck but at least UGA frats don’t wear Jorts (jean shorts), or at least i hope not. If you want to talk championships, neither team is much of a threat to the top where USC, Ohio State and Oklahoma can blow you out of the water.

Red N Black, i would take Texas last year over any SEC school. They beat a healthy OU team by 10 when Florida attacked the 3rd string middle linebacker the whole time and needed 3 horrible play calls at the goal line to beat them by 10. You will see Texas vs Florida in the championship this year and it will be a game for the ages (but I think Texas comes out on top barely). I am not a Big 12 fan or an SEC fan (I went to Emory so I have no allegiance to any school) just a college football fan that sees through the bs.

L-Dawg, that goes back to what someone said about having a mullet. What your not saying is that every house you see with a Red G on the mailbox leads into a Trailer Park. That is what makes me so mad about UGA fans, they make the state look sooo stupid and then act like it is something to be proud of. I try hard to defend the state of Georgia, but sometimes it isn’t so easy. Thanks for living up to the stereotype.

Actually I grew up in NC, not NY. and I was interested in seeing what UGA prides itself in so I read the list and disagreed with some points. Its a blog, im just as entitled to state my opinion as you. And someday I do want to go west. I ultimately want to end up back in Charlotte (great city but small) or Dallas (I hear it is great) so maybe I will end up listening to you dawg man. BTW, I went to emory with a guy that graduated high school in HP with Matt stafford so I have since become a big Stafford fan.

Red N Black, until there is a playoff, I’m going to add the word “Mythical” before “National Championship.” Once again, Texas would have beaten Florida in my opinion. And I’m not bandwagon at all because I don’t ever say I am a fan of teams. I just like watching good football, I didn’t know that was a crime.

Well there are more than 101 reasons:

1. Supporting a program that is in the tank and has only 1.5 national titles i 116 years of football.

2. Taking a successful coach like Jim Donnan away from Marshall and showing the world why the UGA football program can wreck a coach’s career.

3. Watching all the rednecks dress down in their blue jean shorts, goaties, and cell phones on their way to Sanford Stadium to witness another beatdown (UF, UA, GT, and Vandy).

4. The best reason is to watch UGA losing to Vandy at homecoming..this was priceless.

5. Paying $5k to $10k per year for season tickets (booster fees), only to end up in the Boise Idaho Potato Bowl.

Wow…this could go on and on…..

Roll Tide

First of all Roll Tide and thank you so much for beating the pure living hell out of the Dogs last year in front of a national audience. You just proved why ESPN avoids Athens when it comes to College Game Day, because UGA typically gets thier ass#$# ripped.

Keep up the good work, because UGA will not see another SEC title as long as Meyer, Miles and Saban are around. UGA should take a page out of Gainesville’s, Baton Rouge’s or Tuscaloosa’s book and create a championship program.

What happens is the players are under-coached, overrated and lack the practical discipline to avoid penalties. It is all about show and mouth in Athens, vs. backing it up like you do in Gainesville.

That is the largest embarassment in this state, is UGA’s inability to back up their mouth. The Alabama and Florida game was a total football debacle to this state and just proves that CMR is being out-coached, but those idiots will just give him another raise. Because, they do not want to go back to the Donnan and Goof years.
