Is the Florida series Richt’s ultimate test?

Asked to name Georgia’s biggest SEC rivals, most fans quickly will say Florida first and Auburn second. Then maybe Tennessee, followed by South Carolina. Or should LSU rank above those two? What about Alabama?

As rivalries go, the usual weak sisters of the SEC East (Kentucky and Vandy) and the SEC West teams we don’t play that often (Arkansas, Ole Miss and Mississippi State) probably wouldn’t be anyone’s pick.

But the fact is that as tight as the battle for the SEC East title is most years, every conference game is important. Not equally important, because if, say, Georgia and Florida wind up with the same record in the East but Florida beats Georgia head to head, they take the division. Still, it’s safe to say that even games against Vandy and Mississippi State are more important in terms of the Dogs’ SEC goals than the annual nonconference game against Georgia Tech.

Does Mark Richt have to have a winning record against Florida to be considered UGA's greatest coach?

View Results

Loading ... Loading ...
So considering that, the fact that Mark Richt has a winning record in his eight years against every SEC team except the Gators is pretty impressive. He’s undefeated against Arkansas (4-0), Ole Miss (4-0) and Mississippi State (2-0). He’s 7-1 against Vandy and Kentucky, with the only losses coming during that 2006 midseason slump. Richt is 6-2 against South Carolina, 3-1 against Alabama, 5-3 against Tennessee and Auburn and 3-2 against LSU (with both losses to the Bengal Tigers coming during the 2003 season, the second being in the SEC Championship game). Only with the 2-6 record against Florida is the dean of SEC coaches on the negative side. And two of those losses came to national championship teams.

Overall, Richt is 48-19 in SEC games, with a 27-13 record against SEC East teams and 21-6 against the SEC West. (His nonconference record, of course, is a superlative 34-3).

So here’s today’s question: If Richt were to stay at UGA for many years and continue to have a winning record against every SEC team except Florida, would you rank him as the Dogs’ greatest coach? Or is a winning record against the Gators a prerequisite for achieving that distinction? Feel free to comment, vote in the poll or both.

Dooley had Erk Russell and Mike Cavan on the sidelines
which resulted in motivation and enthusiasm and
confidence. Hand it to Dooley to make the choices for
having these coaches on his team.
Until Richt finds someone like Erk and Cavan to generate
some enthusiasm and “kick ass” attitude, I think Georgia
will just be as they have been the last twenty years.

mightykc,

Bragging is a way of life for the gators. Ever heard of winning with class? Acting like you have been there before? I have several gator friends who do just that.

Unlike you, they understand that things do go in cycles and nothing is guaranteed. What happens if UGA beats Florida this year? Then it becomes 3-3 in the last 6 and even someone as stupid as you can go back and read the scores from 2002-now and realize that the scores are always close except for 2008.

Just enjoy the success of your team and show a little class.

I can’t believe any true UGA fan is not ecstatic to have CMR as there coach. UF is the best team in the country right now and Tim Tebow may be the best QB/player ever to play college football. CMR is a class act and I sure can’t remember Donnan/Goff posting 10 win seasons. The entire SEC is better now than it was 10 years ago. I would love to win the NC, but it is more of a beauty contest than anything. Look how many times Ohio State got to play in that game from that lame ass Big Ten. I truly hope CMR doesn’t read this blog. I would hate to see him leave. BTW, does St. Simons have to post that 45-42 garbage on every blog? We get it you won 1 game in the last 8 against us. I’m sure when teams figure out that 1925 offense you run, things will change.

I love my Dawgs, always have and always will, but face it guys, we are pretty much toast up next to the gators of late. Would I trade in Mark Richt? OOOOOHHH NOOOOOOO!! Do you remember how anemic we were prior to him coming aboard?? Going to ANY bowl game was a big deal for us back then.

Yes, every Dawg has his day, and right now uf has us by the tail, but that shall turn and we shall have gator on our menu soon.

I did an analysis of Dooley’s coaching record a while back, taking into account the number of regular season games each season and the number of available bowls/D1 schools.

I don’t have it here in front of me, but I seem to recall that in today’s terms it would have averaged out to about 9 wins per season, maybe a fraction above. That’s not quite as good as UGA has done under Richt but it’s not shabby by any means. Over a 25 year coaching career (?), Dooley represented UGA with class and continues to do so to this day.

Now, for the “Dooley only had Herschel” kiddies: Herschel played at UGA for 3 years, arguably the best 3 year run in the program’s history. And yes, there was a NC and a National Coach Of The Year Award included in that time period. But I believe that Dooley also won the National Coach award at least one other time, earlier in his career? I might be mistaken, but I seem to recall running across that tidbit somewhere.

A win this year and we are 3-3 over last 6.I really do not understand why we are being so stubborn about having an off week before the game,Fla takes this game very seriously and uses their bye week for this game most of the time. They seem to take this one more seriously than the FSU game.UGA?We seem determined to not to schedule the bye because we want to prove it does not make a difference….the results on the field seem to indicate otherwise. As for Dooley compared to Richt?Vince rode Hershel the way Meyer’s riding Tebow.Vince won 3 Sec championships and 1 NC with 34 .I felt like we could have won at least 1 more though .He wasn’t an innovative genius or anything and at times I thought he was too dang conservative but he was a solid coach. It’s rather ironic how things turned out.The program started to slide the last 4-5 years under Dooley..honestly we had started to become rather mediocre culminating in the 17-17 tie against FSU in Dooley’s last game.Exit Vince and Bobby Bowden took over south georgia and FSU started one of the great runs in college football history! Now we have a product of that FSU system here leading us back to prominence.I would also note that FSU has not been the same since Mark Richt left….and that aint no coincidence!True Bill.. Vince had 10 game seasons but Richt has a higher winning percentage. So by the numbers given the same schedule over the same period of time..CMR would win more games.Interesting how the fortunes of UGA and FSU have turned out since that 17-17 tie in Orlando.

Technically, no, you could lose to the Gators every year and still make the SEC championship several times. But, yes, he would only get the sports-complex-with-his-name-on-it if he gets on the positive side of that series. Spurrier knew it when he came to Florida and put high priority on the game. Dooley certainly knew it. But, he has won a couple, and without Tebow, maybe he would have won a couple more. Urban Myer is apparently a good coach. He has a good scheme and phenomenal talent that he seems to motivate well. I just think he is a weasley SOB, and would like to punch him in the nose. Wouldn’t put money on it, but, man, I would love to see an upset (with total good sportsmanship… no celebrations… no late game time outs).

The game in Jax ROCKS. Where else would you get a 50/50? Most GA fans don’t care that it’s 5 miles over the line. Under any circumstances losing to UF stinks, but is understandable given their overall talent. Losing to GT and USC’s Spurrier in our own house however is unacceptable and CMR doesn’t seem to mind so much.

Richt needs to get unreasonable to win. I admire his delegation, but CMR is more concerned with loyalty to his OC and DC – the biggest weakness on the team. Our coaching does not demonstrate the killer instinct, as evidenced by often killing the clock going into halftime – why not go for the throat like at the end of the game? Too scared of a disaster with the deep ball? Seeking an end to poor momentum? Regroup to stop the bleeding?

Great recruiter, class act, brilliant, but too calm and conservative. An obvious lack of hunger in our losses last year. Saban and Meyer? I hate ‘em, but their killer instinct and hunger completely ate our lunch last year. Of our last 5 games, 4 teams hung at least 38 points on us. And 45 points from GT? Dawgs were NOT PREPARED. I’m just not ready to crown CMR as he seems to be slowing down, not speeding up.

UF is his greatest test. He will not be the greatest until we get the series back more even. Dooley has the NC too. Yes, Herschel was a big part of his success just as Tebow is a big part of Meyer’s success at UF.

The game in Jax will be changed up, its just a question of when. Jacksonville is not a neutral site, trust me I live here. Its still called the Gator Bowl here and remember its in Florida. Its no more neutral than the GA dome would be.

Let the Techsters rub it in. They only have 4 more months and then we won’t here from them again for 7 more years, than God!

VD vs. MR

Winning %

VD Overall – 72% (24 Seasons)
(W/out HW) – 69%)

MR Overall – 79% (8 Seasons)

% of seasons ranked in the final polls

VD – 45%
MR – 100%

Average final ranking (and If not ranked, I’m giving a 25???)

VD – 18
MR – 10.8

National Championships

1 in 24 tries – 4%
0 in 8 tries – 0%

MR’s numbers definately show favorable to VD. Unfortunantly some want to measure by # NC’s where VD (HW) holds the obvious edge, 1-0 with 16 more attempts.

Bill, I rarely frequent the Junkyard Blawg, but I could not resist today’s topic.

In answer today’s question, yes, in the absence of a national championship during his tenure, the Florida-Georgia series record IS Richt’s ultimate test.

Richt looks to be a lifer in Athens, and lifers are all-about life-time statistics. Right now, Richt is 2-6 against the Gators, and, while most Dawg fans like Richt, they aren’t happy about the Dawgs wining only 25% of their games against the Gators. Richt could use a win against Florida in 2009.

Hey 1eyedJack….You need to calm down. Its clear you are just a kid or a very immature adult. You wouldn’t know a class act if it bit you in the ass. We’re sitting here in the office and laughing at your post. You clearly aren’t a Dawg fan…thank god. Mark Richt is a class act and Georgia is lucky to have him. Coach Richt will eventually win a NC, because he does it the right way.He sets a good example for others to follow. Since he’s been at Georgia the Dawgs have won two SEC Championships and played in the SEC Championship game three times. His teams consistantly has double digit win seasons. His record aganist Meyer is 1-2 with each team having a blowout win and the Dawgs losing by seven with their starting QB(Shockley) out due to injury. Meyer is the hot new coach right now due to the type of gimmic offense Florida runs…believe me it won’t last. Defenses will eventullay adjust and the Gators will slink back to being a non factor in college football just like they were before Spurrier got there. Right now they are riding on the back of Tebow (a class act and great athelete)when he leaves Meyer’s true coaching ability will surface. It might even happen this year because Dan Mullen who has called the plays and coached the QB’s at Florida since Meyer got there is gone.As far as arrest records…just look at the type of “crimes” the Georgia players were arrested for(under age drinking, speeding, suspended license) compared to the type of crimes the Florida players were arrested for( assault and battery, burglary, carrying a conceled weapon, credit card fraud, robbery)….its not even close.Since Richt arrived at Georgia the football team now has the highest GPA and graduation rate in the SEC,Florida’s doesn’t even come close.I know for a fact that Florida now has two players starting that Georgia quit recruiting because their high school grades weres so bad they would not have been admitted to Georgia. How Lawrence Marsh ever got in college let alone stay there ought to be investigated by the SEC…..so relax our time is coming…Let the Big Dawg Eat!

CMR has had the BENEFIT of an SEC WITHOUT the same roster of HCs now in the conference.

Bama dumped Shula, now has Saban
LSU has Miles
KY has Rich Brooks
Ole Miss Has Nutt(beeter support than Nutt had at Ark)
Ark now has Petrino(a decidely BETTER offensive mind than CMR or Bozo)
FL had Zook now has Meyer(of course Zook beat CMR often)
USC has Spurrier
Tenn now has the KIFFIN MACHINE(Laugh now. It wont be so funny when Monte Kiffin’s SUPER BOWL WINNING DEFENSE steps on the field)

Rebel Rouser,

“His record aganist Meyer is 1-2 with each team having a blowout win and the Dawgs losing by seven with their starting QB(Shockley) out due to injury.”

– Actually he’s 1-3. You combined two years. 2005 was the Shockley game and Meyer’s first. Score was 14-10. 2006 – UF won by 7 points. 2007 and 2008 were the blowouts.

“Meyer is the hot new coach right now due to the type of gimmic offense Florida runs…believe me it won’t last.”

– I believe this was the war chant when Meyer first came to UF and still hasn’t panned out. Not to mention the spread is becoming a very popular offense throughout college football, so I’d have to disagree with the ‘won’t last’ comment.

“Right now they are riding on the back of Tebow (a class act and great athelete)when he leaves Meyer’s true coaching ability will surface.”

– I’d argue that UF’s best player over the Meyer era (from a pure physical talent and game changing perspective) has been Percy Harvin and he was injured enough that Meyer had to adjust. UF doesn’t win last year without Percy’s heroic effort in the title game. Also, 2006 Tebow was a situational substitute, so I think Urban showed he can coach that season. That team doesn’t win the championship if Tebow was the full time starter so I think Meyer was doing something right getting the most out of former Zook players.

“As far as arrest records…just look at the type of “crimes” the Georgia players were arrested for compared to the type of crimes the Florida players were arrested for”

– I fear you may be cherry picking here to prove a point. I don’t have all the police reports in front of me here, but that seems to be an interesting sample you selected.

And my personal favorite….

“Defenses will eventullay adjust and the Gators will slink back to being a non factor in college football just like they were before Spurrier got there.”

If ‘defenses will eventually adjust’ is your best argument for why UF will go back to being a non factor in college football, than I and many Gator fans will gladly take our chances thank you very much.

I love and admire Richt, as a football coach and a human being. But he’s not the best in UGA history . . . yet. I do think he’ll get there. I love his wide open offenses. Much better than Dooley’s, and I was on Dooley’s first team in ‘64. But Richt has got to beat Florida and win at least one national title to match Dooley, who was 17-7-1 against Florida, won the crown in 1980, and had some huge blowouts in Jax. Richt is getting the players. Just look at his fabulous recruiting crops. Just can’t put it all together enough in Jax. Gotta do it Coach Mark, then we’ll put you on that pedestal with Coach Vince. For the rest of their lives they’ll only be able to show the rings to one another cause no one else cares…..Tech if your football program is so great you won’t need to come on this blog and tell us…everyone will eventually tell you….but you haven’t yet grasp that yet because your so busy acting like little kids. Ugh, why would anyone open up the Coordinator switch debate again? His loyalty to coordinators is what has gotten him this far. Compare that to Tubberville and Fat Phil; how did their coordinator changes work out?

Would I like to see new defensive schemes and contact practices this year? Yeah. But you can’t install new personnel every year and a new system and expect to engender immediate success. At the end of the day, we have a good system, good schemes, and good players. We have one year of unacceptable results (that, fittingly, could be attributed to just a handful of hits that didn’t turn into tackles–hello contact practice.) The only move you can make on Martinez at this point is to get BVG back–anything else is a sure to be two steps back for one step forward.

Richt is already our best coach. Dooley may remain the only coach to win an NC when Richt leaves, and Richt may have a losing record to Florida, but that won’t change the fact that our bowl resume has been impressive, our rankings have been outstanding, and every aspect of our program has progressed under Richt. We have 9- and 10-win rebuilding years in the country’s top conference.

That’s something the nerds can’t seem to fit into their equations.

Two things are for sure, we own Tech no matter who the coach is and we own the series against Florida not withstanding thay have owned it since 1990.
One more thing… take away a coach’s best players and no coach’s record is as good. That is a losers way of trying to make things even. It is a dumb argument.
