ESPN.com’s Chris Low reports that Georgia receiver A.J. Green, a freshman sensation last season and a consensus preseason All-SEC first-team pick, is bulking up, but the increased weight apparently isn’t affecting his speed. Green has put on 20 pounds, according to Georgia coach Mark Richt, and now weighs 207. The 6-4 sophomore was listed last year at 190 pounds. Low quotes Richt as saying Green is “faster and more explosive,” but he notes that the Dogs still need someone to step up and replace Mohamed Massaquoi on the other side at receiver. …
Bulldawg Illustrated’s Ryan Scates thinks Sanford Stadium is respected as a beautiful place to play but isn’t as intimidating as some other stadiums. Scates makes the case for playing more home games at night in Athens, arguing that while afternoon kickoffs might provide a more family-friendly game experience, “night games are louder, they are more electric, and they are the culmination of hours of anticipation of waiting to see the Dawgs.” Not to mention a lot more time to down copious amounts of alcohol. …
The Sporting News’ Matt Hayes, noting that the SEC West looks stronger than the SEC East for a change this year, examines which has been the dominant division historically since the conference split into East and West in 1992. Overall won-loss record goes to the West, while the East has taken more SEC titles. …
Finally, if you haven’t seen it yet, check out Tim Tucker’s story about how a Georgia legislator this week called on the University of Georgia to move the annual Georgia-Florida football game out of Jacksonville every other year as a response to a federal judge’s ruling last week that Georgia is illegally withdrawing water from Lake Lanier. This is nothing more than political grandstanding. Linking the issue of where a college football game is held to a water war between the states is one of the worst ideas I’ve heard in a long time. There are valid arguments for and against moving the game in alternating years to Atlanta, and we’ve pretty much done that subject to death here already. But doing it just to get back at the state of Florida for disputing Atlanta’s right to take water out of Lake Lanier isn’t something that should even be considered.

Politics exists in both cases because money is involved. Although it’s a far stretch to draw a correlation between water and a football game, the fact remains that a lack of water, a valuable resource that is critical for the growth of our state, may be necessary to get dirty when it comes dealing with Florida.

I have to agree with the quiet factor sometimes. We sit on that side right behind the bench – the players will be pleading for the fans to get up and we’re getting asked to sit down. The good news is I never listen to the sitters – as a matter of fact we announce to them before kickoff that we will be standing continuously except half time, so don’t bother to complain.
The driving infractions with Doe don’t concern me nearly as much as the “dropped charges resulting from a fight.” Can’t comment any more than that without knowing the details, but it stinks a little.

As far as the “intimidating” factor of a stadium…it has more to do with the players than the fans. The fans get louder & louder when the home players are making big plays & kicking butt. Sanford Stadium will be loud & intimidating when the fans see more touchdowns & more 3-and-outs. Good special teams also gets the crowd going. Just my thoughts. GO DAWGS!!

A defense that doesn’t give up 41 points to Bama and 45 to GT will make Sanford Stadium a more intimidating place. As an official old fart, season tix since 1973, watching “young farts” come to the game drunk and stupid does not intimidate an opponent. Get a real Junkyard Dawg Defense and the stadium will be loud.
p.s. the loudest crown noise ever recorded by ABC Sports was in Jax in 1980. 40,000 old farts are responsible for that record!!!

Murfdawg. The team gave up 41 points to Bama and 45 points to NATS (2 TD’s given up off of turnovers each game. One of Tech’s was a pick 6 INT, even). Spotting the ball to Florida at the 1 yard line, 10 yard line, and 25 yard line doesn’t give any defense much room for error.
Every one wants the Baltimore Ravens defense. We had a bad year last season. Especially by Georgia standards. But it wasn’t as bad as most fans on this board believe.

Back to the thread at hand… AJ Green should have a great season. I expect a star at TE to emerge this year (Orson Charles). If we can spread the ball in the air to Green, Charles, and our RB’s effectively, then that should be enough balance to keep safeties off of the double teams.
Besides that… I think Tavarres King & Michael Moore will both be more than able to contribute amazing/gamechanging plays (maybe the stats won’t show huge numbers, but these guys are playmakers, too).

I have been arguing for a long time that the flagship university in GA should not annually subsidize the state of FL. Regardless of who has the advantage on the football field. That game brings a lot of revenue to Jacksonville every year and GA is completely missing out on it.

No matter what, you’re not going to get Sanford louder than some of the other places. Look at how it is constructed compared to the Swamp and Neyland. It is far more gradually sloping away from the field than those two stadiums. They are going to hold in the noise much better whether the game is a day game or night game.
Much like Michigan’s Big House is huge, but not very intimidating compared to Ohio State’s Shoe. The advantage of size is more than offset by the stadiums gradual slope vice OSUs steeper sidelines and enclosed endzone.

I don’t attend the games like I use to but the Saturday night game against Bama was electric. You could sense it on the radio and on the TV as well. Beating top teams consistently at home will make Sanford Stadium the tough place to play like it was under Dooley. It is all in ATTITUDE, on the field and in the stands. Today the game seems more like a social event. When I was in school, mid 70’s, the opposing team was thought of as a thief trying to break in to our home and we weren’t going to let that happen. No comes in our house and takes a WIN. Get that attitude back and everything will be ok.

Had a close friend, (Dawg fan, by the way) go to the game when Georgia went to the Swamp during Gator Bowl renovation. Said, “He would never go there again.” It had nothing to do with the score. I’m going to tell you, go back in time, between the hedges with Dooley and Russell. The games started at 2PM, there were lights in the stadium, but they were located down where the hedges are. They were only used for Athens High games back then. When you went into Sanford, you took your liquor with you, a fifth or so each time. There were no gestapo thugs checking you when you entered. The railroad tracks at the east end zone was filled at 8AM, for the bigger games, filled the night before. That is where the original “walk” to the stadium began, long before Ole Miss or Auburn had the idea. If the team was not ready for the game, they got ready when they saw that crowd on the tracks. And that old score board with the bulldog and the ax he held was great.
And, the greatest opener, was the 18-17 Alabama game the opener? The greatest of all time, and again, the flicka did not win the game, the 2 point conversion, rather than the tie did the trick. There was no overtime.
And, the blackout Alabama game, the crowd was ready, and did not leave at the half, a total lack of preparation by the staff, like Dye said, not man enough, just the wrong year.
Go Dogs…….

I agree totally with Chris Low on the Georgia crowd and Sanford. When it comes to home stadiums (not including neutral), I have attended almost 200 Georgia games in Sanford, and at every SEC stadium except for Miss St, Arkansas, and the Swamp. Also have attended Ga games at Clemson and Ga Tech and have been to Fla State games in Tallahassee when I lived in the panhandle. Georgia fans love their team as much as anyone, but the loudness ranks well below LSU and Tenn. When their teams are decent, both Clemson and SC are louder. Auburn, Alabama, and FSU are no worse than even with the Ga fans in the loudness, in fact, I’d put Auburn ahead of us in the loud dept as well.
Why is that? I have no clue and have often wondered about it. I had an Auburn fan tell me one time we had the reputation of a being a “wine and cheese” crowd, whatever that means. Does anyone have a theory on the lack of loudness in Sanford?
By far, the loudest games I have attended ever at Sanford have been at night . Two that stick in my mind are the Auburn game in 07 and the Clemson game in 91. There have been others. However, these days, it does no good to schedule night games because TV can move the good ones to whenever they want..leaving only the crappy games..and no one wants to wait til night to see Tenn Tech, Ga Southern or New Mex. St.
When it comes to beauty and setting; there is no contest; UGA is #1 in the SEC. Tennessee is the only one even close. their setting is great, but their stadium is a dog. For tailgating; Ga has the best setting, but LSU overall is king. Those dudes can cook; and everyone does..in Athens, most people cater. Auburn resembles a NASCAR crowd. SC fans just try not to explode in the 110 degree heat. Tech fans just hope the game gets over in a hurry so they can get back to the library.
Whose fans are the most obnoxious in the SEC? it’s a 10 way tie. Vandy and Ky get a pass since they have nothing to be obnoxious about during football season. However, KY gets special mention for obnoxiousness in basketball. …speaking from a Cat-lanta standpoint). The only thing that ever shut those KY fans up at the SEC tourney was a tornado.

All this talk about crowd noise….two things
1-You have a great defense and win some big games as opposed to losing like we did to Bama and GT….it will be louder.
2-Who cares? I remember an interview with David Greene and they were asking him about crowd noise and he said everyone tuned it out because loud is loud, he couldn’t tell the difference on the field between 85 and 100,000 it was always loud. Miami didn’t have the loudest stadium in the 90s but it didn’t matter. Players make plays, not crowds.

Red, white, black jerseys– it does not matter. Playing Florida in Jacksonville is an AWAY game every year. This is a no-win situation for the visiting Dawgs. The silly thing about the argument is that if half the folks in Sanford refused to stand and say one word, there would still be twice as many fans cheering for them as they have in road games, which they seem to have a pretty good record, so obviously THAT has no affect of the outcome.

Having attended the one Georgia/Fla game played in the swamp, I have to tell you that’s got to be the loudest. An interesting sidelight however, is that while the ‘din’ was deafening, as I looked around me I couldn’t see anybody hollering – of course we were in the Bull Gator section where the swells spent more time in the club area than out in the elements, but still as I looked around the entire stadium nothing looked like the noise that permeated the night. I’ve heard it said, and after that night I concur, they amplify the crowd noise. Don’t ask me for proof, I don’t have any, but then I don’t need any to make the claim – do I?
Mr. King called the proposal to force the move of the GA/FLA game to home and home, or something, political grandstanding. I disagree. I’ve been all for keeping the game in J’ville because it’s such a great trip, but the point here is that Florida has pushed metro-Atlanta against the wall to prop-up a bunch of shellfish (hell, I don’t even know what kind – oysters? clams”, who cares the little pissants will kill you if you eat enough of ‘em) farmers, catchers, whatever, and unless we use what leverage we have to push back, why would they ever ’suggest’ to their representatives to ‘lay off on the water stuff, we need the drunken brawl to help pay for garbage pick-up’. Actually, it probably is grandstanding, but then that’s the way politics works
Finally, for those that are suggesting that the OK-State game is the toughest opener Georgia has ever had, you obviously weren’t around in the 50s and 60s when we – year after every damn year – opened with Alabama (and most of those were Bear Bryant’s Alabama). For a lot of those seasons they were starting their run at the National Championship, were the defending NC, or both. Trust me, I’ll take OK State and all of T-Boone’s gazillions every year as opposed the Tide of the Bear Bryant hey-days.

I’ve never thought that Sanford Stadium was much of a home field advantage for the Dawgs. Not sure why that is, if there are just more distractions or what. Richt and Co are great on the road though. I think it’s high time to figure out what works so well on the road and apply that to home games. If that means eliminating some of the pre-game hoopla then so be it. So folks would grumble, but I think the majority of the fans would love to see the Dawgs dominate at home the way they do on the road.

Sanford Stadium was more intimidating in Dooley’s days than the period since 1990 because Dooley always had a defense. Dooley did not have an albatross like Willie M. to run the D and have it collapse. Goff, Donnan, and Richt have all had substantial collapses.
Dooley may have won average of 8 games, but they were playing fewer games with the same number of bye weeks to rest.
I’m for commencing some new traditions and winning more big games. Close end the east endzone to make it a bowl and add some voices and it will get louder; get Scott Howard to chide the old timers for being lazy and tell them to stand up; remove Tech as an annual opponent and play them 2 years and then 4 years off so that we can play some teams from real football schools.

The problem with the theory about how less games means less win opportunity is that it should also mean that there should have been less losses too. Right? I am as big of a Erk as anybody, but let’s be honest, the decade before the NC his defenses were part of teams that were 4 loss twice, 5 loss twice, and 6 loss twice. That 6 out of 10 years losing 4 games or more playing less games. Several times not even going to bowl games. Never had any collapses?
Cuz, I think the stadium was about as loud during the Va 0-31 game as it was for the 0-33 loss to Ky a couple of years prior. Don’t even talk abount 74. They couldn’t stop anybody that year.

Richt has 22 losses. The breakdown is as follows:
Home: 9

2 of those away losses were SEC losses, and the neutral site losses are 6 from Florida and 1 from the SEC. If that isn’t decent evidence of the garbage of the “Jacksonville isn’t a neutral site” argument, I dunno what is.

Hey, Auburn and Tennessee have 8 out of 12 games at home every year now.
Dawgs have 6 at home this year. WOuld have had another HOME game last year after leaving a ROAD game at Baton Rouge, but all you traditionalists had to play in JAX instead of Athens.
GA-FLA in jax is a no longer needed thing. Why not play FLA-TN in Nashville?? Look at all the tourism things the gators could do….what about it Foley?? didnt think so.

Altamaha, the other SEC neutral site would either be a loss at Vandy or Kentucky.

Florida Field has got to be one of the worst stadiums in the country. Since they added onto the stadium 60% of all the seats are now situated in the endzones. The stadium looks like there was no thought process whatsoever used in planning how it should look or function. Alabama, LSU,Tennessee, Georgia,Auburn and even Ole Miss have better stadiums. If you like swatting bugs, bad food, no parking, small restrooms that smell
(although the smell might be coming from the fans)then you’ll like Florida field. Its named ..The Swamp..and should be named the dump!

stephen, are you saying that playing in Athens every other year would be better financially for the school, improve the chances of winning, or just purely a fan enjoyment deal?

Tn, doesn’t have 8 home games as a standard. They do this year because of the OOC schedule. If UGA was not swapping the OOC home and home, they would have had 7, which is what Tn and AU usually have. UF sacrifices a home SEC game as well to play in Jville, so that in itself means nothing to overall program success. I dont think ANY of the other SEC team would trade one more home game for the type of publicity that the Cocktail Party gets. UF just makes sure that schedules 2 OOC games that they dont have to reciprocate to make up for it, which we could have done too, but ventured out a little bit for a couple of years.
And what does (not) getting UF in Athens LAST year, have to do with THIS years home schedule anyway?

PS. Sometimes tradition is more important than money (even if Atlanta can’t manage its water). Stay in Jax! Take Jax back! UGA used to own that city.

AltamahaDawg: The other neutral site loss (the one that wasn’t Florida) was an SEC Championship.
The argument goes that Florida has closer to a homefield advantage in Jacksonville because of the proximity to Gainesville. Since we play better as an away team, if Florida had a true “home field advantage”, that *should* help us. You might argue venue (We are 2-6 in Jacksonville and 2-1 in Neutral Site games in Atlanta, which should really be looked at as 2-2 because of the Sugar Bowl) The more likely scenario is simply that we haven’t matched up well against Florida.

D’oh! the SECCG, of cource. Should have caught that one.
And on another rare miss, I thought you were going in the other direction with that J-ville theory. I agree with you. Calling it “away” should be a good thing. FWIW, I have always thought that Richt was playing up the whole “unfair” issue as a way TO motivate, not complain.
