Two-minute drill: Defense now and in the future

Georgia’s defense had big problems last season, and Mark Richt was asked today at his SEC Media Days appearance how he and his staff have tried to address those issues heading into the 2009 season.

Richt’s reply: “Number one, we hope to stay healthy. Number two, we hope to practice the way we’ve practiced every year since I’ve been at Georgia, and that is to practice tackling by tackling, and to practice goal line by getting on the goal line, practice inside run by getting after it full speed, full contact.” Last year, Richt said, “we backed off of some of those practice sessions in full pads with the intention of playing full speed as far as tackling to the ground, cutting below the waist, just playing football, because we got to the point where we were so thin at some positions, if we lost one more guy, we were gonna be in trouble with just having a guy that would know what to do. … I hope I’m not put in that situation again to have to make that decision, but if I don’t flinch, we’re gonna keep practicing the way you got to practice playing defense. Hopefully, we learned a good lesson there.”

As for what areas of the defense concern him the most: “We need pressure off the edge. We need guys that can cover people outside. If you’re weak in the middle, you got problems. I’m not disappointed by any stretch about our corner play or anything like that. I’m confident in them. … [The] defensive ends, I feel like they’re hungry. They feel like they’ve got something to prove. Historically, since I’ve been at Georgia, our defensive end position has been highly productive. We’ve had many first and second team all SEC performers. We’ve had guys lead the league in sacks. Last year we fell short of what was normal for us.” …

Speaking of defensive ends, after having such a shortage that at one point during preseason practice there was only one player healthy at that position, the Athens Banner-Herald notes that Richt apparently is stockpiling them for the future, with five verbal commitments so far from defensive ends in the 2010 class: T.J. Stripling, Brandon Burrows, B.J. Butler, Jalen Fields and Dexter Morant. Overall, 13 of Georgia’s 18 verbal commitments so far are from defensive players. …

Ever wondered what Joe Cox has on his iPod? What his favorite films are? What’s on his bedroom walls? Me neither. But you can find out nevertheless thanks to Sporting News Today, which devotes today’s My Profile to the Dogs quarterback. By the way, Cox is a major Tiger Woods fan and one of the things up on his wall is his 2007 black jersey. …

The Banner-Herald has an update on former UGA basketball player Sundiata Gaines, who played pro ball in Italy last year. Gaines has been invited to mini-camps by four NBA teams, including the Hawks, after last year receiving no NBA offers. “Playing in the NBA is a big deal for anybody,” Gaines says. “You live for it every day. That was my motto and my goal when I went to Italy — to try to work and improve so I can come back and play in the NBA.” If not, he’ll head back overseas.

KEEP DRINKING THE KOOLAID THAT RIVALS MAKES (AND AJC SWEETENS), GEORGIA! IT MAKES THE ANUAL BEAT DOWN IN JACKSONVILLE THAT MUCH TOUGHER FOR YOU TO SWALLOW (49-10).

WHAT AM I TALKING ABOUT? I AM TALKING ABOUT YOU GUYS THINKING OUR DOMINANCE OVER YOU IS ABOUT TO END AND THAT YOU ARE RAIDING OUR STATE FOR RECRUITS. LOL.

ALWAYS REMEMBER WE ARE A NATIONAL POWER. YOU ARE ONLY A REGIONAL ONE. FOR 2010 YOU HAVE EIGHT 4 STAR RECRUITS. GUESS WHAT? WE HAVE TEN (PLUS A 5-STAR)! LOL. AND 5 OF THE 6 FLORIDA GUYS YOU “STOLE” ARE 2-3 STARS THAT WE DIDN’T WANT. THEY ONLY LISTED FLORIDA ON THEIR LISTS TO RIVALS IN ORDER TO GAIN LEVERAGE WITH GEORGIA. YOU GUYS REALLY ARE DUMB AS HELL.

YOU WILL PAY FOR THAT END ZONE CELEBRATION FOR AT LEAST 4 MORE YEARS. BANK ON IT.

Interesting how a bash willie blog get 179 hits, but let the head coach explains a few realities and the chirping of cricket can be heard.
