I got my hands on the new 2009 Georgia football media guide Tuesday, and it sort of reminded me of when we were kids and the Sears Christmas catalog, known as the “Wish Book,” would arrive. The three King boys would battle over who got to flip through its wondrous pages first.
Only this time I didn’t even have to fight off my son, since he’s now living in D.C. Tough luck, Bill, you can see it when you come home for the McCartney concert in August!
Although ostensibly aimed at the media who cover the Bulldogs, the guides have always been a fan favorite and in fact used to be sent free to all Bulldog Club/Hartman Fund contributors, before the athletic association cheaped out a few years ago.
You can still buy a copy, though, at various retail outlets in Athens and by mail or online. The athletic association says it’s available for $15 from the GShop of Georgiadogs.com and the UGA Book Store, though it hadn’t yet shown up on either’s Web site when I just checked. Copies also can be ordered by mail for $18 (which includes shipping) from the UGA Athletic Association, Sports Information Yearbook 2, P.O. Box 1472, Room 312, Athens, GA 30603. Make your check payable to the athletic association and allow three weeks for delivery. If you can wait that long.
The guide has 208 pages — which is the maximum that’s allowed since the NCAA decided that the giant volumes schools were producing as an extra recruiting tool earlier in this decade were getting out of hand. Ah, for the days of those 420-pagers like the 2004 guide, which had lots more photos from the past in the record book section. The current guide is more compact but still has a lot of information: biographies of players and coaches, stats, records, pictures, a rundown of the program’s traditions and history, and a rather dated season preview that doesn’t take into account incoming first-year players.
I’ve only given it a quick once-over, but here are some interesting factoids gleaned so far:
Defensive tackle Geno Atkins played on offense as a “wham” back against Auburn and Georgia Tech last season.
Those two interceptions returned for touchdowns in last year’s LSU game are linebacker Darryl Gamble’s only career interceptions so far.
Backup QB Logan Gray was named Biggest Surprise of the Spring on offense at the conclusion of spring drills.
Junior guard Chris Davis enters the 2009 season with the team’s longest streak of consecutive games started, with 26. On defense, Geno Atkins has started 18 consecutive games and 20 overall.
The 2009 senior class enters its final season with a 30-9 record. If they can win 40 or more games, they’ll become the seventh consecutive class to achieve that distinction.
And here’s one you probably don’t want to dwell on too much: Georgia returns players responsible for 51 percent of its receiving, 25 percent of its rushing and just 4 percent of its passing from last season.
Never mind, the media guide is here and practice starts Aug. 4!

maybe geno should stay at wham back. if he wouldn’t have whammed the quarterback so many times last year, our record might have been a bit better.
i can’t wait for more roughing the passer penalties at crucial times in the game….

What kind of life does a Tech fool have getting on the UGA blogs everyday. At least it is not running from the gangs down at the concrete campus. Expect some injuries, but I’d say we are set at every position right now!

Of course it hurts so bad, mainly because it’ so RARE! O line improved, D line improved, Tech eagerly awaiting our arrival at Grant Field at Bobby Dodd Stadium at the George O’Leary School of Graduate Degree Fabrication. Why, you ask? So they can look forward to their biennial sell-out.

Hey so called techers ….. here are some college memories:
Eddie Lee Ivory – Rape and served prison time in Wisconsin.
Frosh recruit of two years ago- rape charges by APD
Joey Hamilton- Drug arrest
Reuben Houston- Drug arrest
Jim Lavin, Mike Mooney and Kevin Salisbury asaulted a girl with their fists and issue settled out of court and HUGE med bills paid by Tech. Players were part of Bobby Ross’ The Right Stuff crowd. Girl went toe to toe with them before they held her while one tackle sumg widly at her. APD cop was witness.
Reggie Ball still learning to count to 4 ……..like in 4th down and throwing the ball out of bounds with David Pollack about to nail him 40 yds behind line of scrimmage. I am still laughing.

Look, honestly I’m at work bored like the rest of you. It’s all in good fun though. I respect UGA as the national powerhouse that they are, but I hope Tech can keep the series hot. Hopefully Tech will be averaging close to 10 wins a season one day, as UGA is now.

GT will not score 56 points on UGA the next 3 years combined – that little piss ant high school bs offense they run will not make it major college football – couple of lucky plays last year hurt us but that was just a fluke

Excuse, m, but did you guys win a bowl game last season? Oh yeah, that’s right, you got ‘whupped’ 38-3 by a team that we scored 52 points on. So go ahead, celebrate that 3 point victory. You won’t get another one for a long time.

Same coach did it to another school a few weeks ago. It is a publicity stunt when they are actually hurting the kids chances. This stuff happens and im sure CMR takes no pleasure in it. PJ did it this off season as well as many other coaches. It happens.
