Two-minute drill: Get well Loran, Greenie update, Dr. Basketball

As Chip Towers reports, longtime Bulldog jack-of-all-trades and gadabout Loran Smith was injured in a serious car accident in France earlier this week, but Smith is now back home in Athens and says he’s “sore as hell but I’m going to be OK.” Smith, who cohosts the pregame tailgate show on the UGA radio network, reports from the sidelines during games and edits/writes the game programs, is probably mainly fretting about the fact that the accident prevented him from making his annual trip to golf’s British Open. Get well quickly, Loran! …

One of the most likable guys ever to play for the Dogs is all-time NCAA winningest quarterback David Greene (”Greenie” to his many friends). Greene is involved in Saturday’s Countdown to Kickoff and the Athens Banner-Herald provides an update on what he’s been doing since retiring from the NFL after four frustrating seasons in which he never got into a game. Greene says once the season starts, “I’ll definitely miss the game. There’s no doubt about that.” But the workouts and practices, “I really won’t miss that. … I won’t miss two-a-days for sure.”

And in case you missed it last year, here’s my chat with Greene about his days at UGA, including his favorite games and plays and that “44-flatback-rooskie” play he was the master of, faking the handoff and hiding the ball until his receiver was wide open. …

Finally, the Louisville Courier-Journal has an interesting story on how former Kentucky basketball player Mark Pope decided to give up medical school at Columbia University to become one of new coach Mark Fox’s assistants at UGA.

Greene had one of the best playaction fakes of any qb i have ever seen. He will always be my favorite UGA qb because he was a winner. Let us never forget 4th down at Auburn; Greene to Johnson. Ive never been so excited in my life. Hobnail boot as a fresh? Still gives me goosebumps. I wish David Greene the best in all of his future pursuits (qb coach at uga?). DGD

Greenie was so good at the fake he would fake out the cameraman on the televised games I watched. I have never seen a QB so good at the fake. Good luck David.

Stafford had the lousiest playaction fakes. Cost UGA the game 2 years ago when UGA didnt even score a T D . Blew an opportunity at a shot in playing for the National championship too.

it’d be nice to see guys like pollack and green get into coaching, but with their name and connections they probably stand to make a better living in the business (green) and tv world (pollack). it’d probably be easier on their families as well as far as the time commitment. plus why ruin the great bulldog legacy that they have if they turn out to be bad coaches….

I liked David Greene a lot, too…BUT…

…I’ll always kind of wonder what path UGA would have taken had Shockley been the QB in, say, 2004. Shockley’s 2005 season was the best a UGA QB has had ever. Ever. Freaking Ever. Just look at the numbers…esp. his TD/INT ratio.

Good response Bill and dawgfanatic24-7 regarding Loran Smith. One assumes those reading & responding on this blog have some idea who the relevant “players” in the UGA athletic family are. No one could be as stupid as Bob B., could they? Hopefully, his post was for reaction only. Let’s just leave it at that. If it was for real, well, the less said the better.

Greene’s last game in Sanford Stadium. Bitter cold and rainy. Greene gets hurt and Shockley goes in. Dawgs lose all momentum and Tech’s D is dominating. Richt sends in Greene WITH A CRACKED BONE IN HIS THROWING HAND for one final drive and the crowd goes wild. Greene drives the Dawgs down the field to victory. Legendary.

And it makes me sick to my stomach to listen to the ignorance of the GT fans. They beat us once in a while and suddenly they come out of the woodworks! And they can say so many things that make NO SENSE! At least they will be hushed come this fall!!!!

Eric Zeier was smarting off on the radio about Paul Johnson running a high school offense. Johson’s reply….well it may very well be a high school offense, but you BETTER have a pretty good high school defense to stop it.

I will never stop laughing at you dawgs…and I don’t think Paul Johnson will either.

To all you Tech turds hanging around here, leave it to one of yours to screw it up for the world and the rest of us and take the Open Championship from a legend. I thought Sink’s – yes I said Sink – stroll down the 18th fairway was the epitome of narcissism…he actually thought that all that applause was for him. Just as the rest of you think that last year’s fluke meant something other than ‘flukes happen’.

Congratulations to Stewart Cink. Tom Watson had his chance to win, he just fell short. Sort of like a game we played last November. As Robert Plant sings, No no no no no……..body’s fault but mine.

Hey DirtyDawg, we can only hope you’re sterile. It would be a shame to pass on such damaged genes. Why don’t you GFY?

He probably wasn’t thinking the applause was for him. He was probably thinking how great it is to be a Jacket, you know, like Bobby Jones. Maybe you’ve heard or Mr. Jones. Probably not. You should look him up.

And Cink was probably praising the Lord that he’s not from UGA.

The what if question about Shockley and Greene is interesting to ponder. I can tell you this with a great deal of certainty: Greene doesn’t play in 2002, we don’t win the SEC. Shockley was an “interception waiting to happen” to quote Tubberville.

I think things played out just right for the two QB’s . Shockley got his day in the sun and won his own SEC championship.
