Mr. SEC.com has come out with its 2009 season predictions and has the Dogs finishing with an 8-4 record (6-2 in SEC play).
The predicted wins: South Carolina, Arizona State, LSU, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Tennessee Tech, Auburn and Kentucky. The losses: Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Florida and Georgia Tech.
The bottom line, says Mr. SEC: “The Bulldogs have too many offensive question marks to grade out anywhere better than an 8- or 9-win season. The reason I went with just 8 wins, however, traces back to their defense. Florida and Georgia Tech both dismantled the Dawgs last year and I don’t believe UGA can do much better in 2009 without faster defensive ends (which they don’t appear to have).” …
Team Speed Kills makes the case that despite his “almost awe-inspiring” .788 winning percentage and six 10-win seasons, it does matter that Mark Richt hasn’t had one of his UGA teams win a national championship, even if it shouldn’t.
Interestingly, the South Carolina fan writing the piece hopes Richt wins a BCS title “in part because he deserves it, and in part because it removes the possibility that some fans will always remember his record with an asterisk. We live in a society that measures sporting accomplishments by championships, real or mythical.”

I for one am glad that UGA is flying under the radar. Much Much like the 2004 Auburn team who went undefeated. I am not claiming an undefeated season this year, but the defense will be improved, and the Offensive Line will give Joe Cox time to do things Stafford didnt have time to do.
There is something special brewing in Athens, and rest assured. Mark Richt and the staff will have their National Championship very soon.

For the record, a 10-3 or 11-2 win this year would be a MUCH bigger accomplishment than last years record.
The fact that things have been quiet in the offseason coming from Athens tells me that they are nothing but business over there, and they are working hard to show up and play, and let that do all the talking.
I have mentioned that all is quiet, except for the fact that Coach Martinez seems to be doing a pretty good job recruiting so far. Bill can you comment on this. I think Willie may be doing a pretty good job with his offseason work. What do you think??

dawgstephen – I agree. All of the ?’s surrounding the team this year relate to the “unproven” new starters (Cox@qb, who will run the ball, d-ends, etc.) Anyone who follows the program closely knows and understands the talent we have coming back this season. One of the biggest problems we had on defense last year was the lack of a dominat d-lineman that warranted a double team.
With J.Owens and G.Atkins charging up the middle, the pocket is going to collapse for opposing teams which will lead to better pressure on the qb from the ends/blitzing LB’s.
As for the rb situation, we don’t have to have one rb step up and be the every down starter- though it would be nice. We have depth at the position and backs with different strengths, so if one doesn’t emerge rb by committee isn’t a bad thing. I think c.thomas will open some eyes.
At wr- someone will step up to compliment Green. Young or not, there’s too much talent there for all to be a bust. M.Moore will have a huge season, and between Wooten, Brown, King, & Troupe I’m sure another will surprise this season.

We will win in OK ST, and Fayetteville no doubt. I also am pretty sure we aren’t going to let the nerds in hotlanta get us. As far as UF, it’s not jus them and the rest of the SEC, it’s them and the rest of NCAA DI. nobody holds a candle to them on paper right now, unfortunately. LSU is gonna be real tough. And as I’ve said before, I think Vanderbilt will be a tough one, probbaly much more so than UT or SC.

If you think anything other than “UGA has a lot of holes to fill”, you’re kidding yourself. Sure, Cox can play, but who is the #2 WR? Who is the #2 CB? Who is the running back that is worth a damn?
We’ll know a lot after the OSU game. If UGA wins, they’ll win 10 or 11 in the regular season. If UGA loses, they’re looking at 8-4.

I’m told by an individual near the program that we just don’t have the players on defense. This person should know too. Not have the players? I thought we were in the top ten in recruiting every year.
A lot of DAWG fans are caught up with Richt’s gentlemanly qualities. I’d take Savan, Miles or Meyer in a heartbeat over Richt and I’m a UGA alum, served on the board and have recruited when that was allowed.
I’m disillusioned.
My belief is that MR has begun to feel the heat as he is snappish and short tempered. He proved he can’t handle the big time with that fiasco of a year last year. He started the way he seems to start most of the time with a lackadaisical performance that knocked us out of first nationally even though we won. Now the magazines say we got ‘em just where we want them, we’re the unheralded underdogs. That’s what aMR is supposed to like. Unfortunately, the flip side of that is less appealing. The flip side is what happens when you come into the season as a favorite a la UF? I think he is a fair-to-middling coach as is his buddy WM and the rest of the staff and especially Garner. Wow. When are those guys in Athens going to wiseup? Just look at the record. We don’t have very many kids in the NFL on defense that were coahced by Garner. He’s way, way, way, overrated. And you might have heard that here first.

Saint Simons,
When has a Richt coached team ever failed to win at least 8 games? There is no way UGA loses 6 to fall to .500 for the year. they are far too talented. The only teams they play that have better talent on the schedule are FL and possibly LSU or Okie State (offense only). All this Richt bashing is crazy. The man wins games. Pure and simple. What was UGA doing before he got here? That’s the true measure. What a coach does with what he has to work with. Richt has the best record a UGA coach has ever amassed during his first 8 years. Just wait. Richt will get his.

djawjuh,
Neither of Meyer’s championship teams came into the season as the favorite. They both worked their way to that point. Let’s wait and see how FL handles being ranked number 1 this year before we judge Richt too much on his performance with the bulls eye on his back. And as for Garner being overrated, I think that is very near sighted. He is probably the most important recruiter for any program in the SEC. That’s what makes him essential. Not his Xs and Os coaching of the defense. And how many players are there in the NFL that have been coached up to get there. They either have the talent or they don’t to some degree.

I am a huge florida fan and have to admit that i think georgia will actually win the game this year. they have a week off to prepare, much better o line, veteran d line, deep linebackers, a better kicking game, and finally have a quarterback that won’t overthrow every deep ball to his receivers, like stafford would do on a weekly basis. i also predict caleb king to have a 1,000 yd season as well and surprise people. Meyer will probably regret calling those timeouts at the end of last year’s game to rub in the score.

I say it every season. Screw the bowls and the polls. Let’s get behind our team in game one. There has been a lot of good energy this summer from players and fans, and then all of the sudden everyone (including me) is thinking about how great it will be to upset UF and be national champs. This article combined with the home vs. road percentage article just makes me think that maybe there just are not enough players being good football players and not enough fans being good football fans. Who cares about Phil Steele or any of these other chumps. Those mags read like horoscopes anyway. Summer 2009: “Georgia will have a tough season, but you never know….” Then in 2010: “I was the one guy who said ‘you never know’” or “I said they would have a tough season.” It is all a bunch of hype for a bunch of manic fools like us. There are a bunch of young men that are working very hard. I wish them all the best. Enjoy your season, everybody.

Tech will be interesting in the ATL…they will be better prepared overall and its a toss up, but I will give the benefit of the doubt. That said, be ready Dawg fans as there will be a bunch of close games, games we won with Stafford, Moreno and Mo Mass. If you feel better about our chances to win all of the others again with Cox, King and Green…then you are crazy. UGA will be very strong this year. The D will be improved as I believe CMR will be paying a lot of attention to that side of the ball. The last 4 games of last season (not including the bowl) was a lack of preparation on the D. A lot of this had to do with injuries and Richt addmitting he changed the practice to limit tackling. Our losses were not a result of injuries directly but rather the poor preparation of not tackling. The offense will not be flashy with the big plays, but steady and bruising behind a very experienced line. UGA will be fine this year and will end up 10-2 regular season.

DawgJones, I must be crazy because I dont think that Georgia will struggle more in the games that they should win bacause we lost those skill players. It was our depleted lines that kept lesser teams in the game with us last year. IF we had had dominate lines last year, I think we would have been pulling those guys pretty early in some of those games.
I’m not one of those that think we are better (because)without those stars. Ideally we have them AND good lines, but its not like we are going to try to play the game with only 8 player on the field either. I would say in those specific games, game we really should win, it’s FAR better to be able to play basic ball control football, as it was to have superstars that had to make big plays to win. In the biggest game, however, its not real obvious right now, where the big plays are going to come from and basic ball control won’t be good enough, as you say in 3 of them.

Mobile Dawg- Long time no cheer from the Emerald Coast. Great post on the numbers and I can tell that you are content to wait, but methinks you have sugarplums (AS MANY OF US DO) for the high wins. I’ll bring up a few analytical facts: Richt doesn’t lose on the road; we beat LSU with a disadvantage to us last year, now what the hell have they added since then? Not new people to make a difference because we had a pretty good recruiting class also including a WR set to go to them, new defensive coach having a better plan? I think not since he is no defensive “guru” and they aren’t any better than last year and we ARE. “They” are back-the D and O players that were strapped last year.; The loss of Ball at Tech hurt us more than Johnson will against players he never got to see last year-yeah!-bring some more of that “noisy” option to a few of our experienced-, smarter- and tougher-than-your-regular players this year. They would like that!;Even the FU fans know that last year was an anomaly and they get to meet Sturdivant and company with a hard on this year. So Okie St has 3 offensive players, none as good as our QB, WR, and RB on O; S, DE, LBs on D. I don’t know how good their kicker is so…… Dagnabbit! One game at the time so that the country can see the best team unfold. The Dawgs are training for Ok St …one game at the time. SIC’EM DAWGS!

My first year at UGA was right after Herschel left. Guess what? We had more yards from the tailback position than Herschel’s last year. Our problems last year were due to injuries on O line and D line. If we keep them healthy this year, who knows. Tailback by committee can work very well.(Watch out for Dontavious Jackson from Heard Cty. now that he is finally healthy) Schedule is a bruiser, but off week before gaturds, no Bama, unless in championship game, Okie state who doesn’t realize that defense is a required part of the game, and Joe Cox isn’t some dang scrub; he would have been starting the last three years if we hadn’t signed that Stafford kid who Kiper said, when he left highschool, would be the first pick in the draft when he came out(and was right). You never know how it will all play out. Last year, preseason number one, but injuries killed us. And let us not pick on WM so much because that 07 defense was awesome. And forget about the Tennessee game, because our offense gave TN the ball on our side of the field 6 times that game. I have faith in our coaching staff. We will get it done soon. 3 SEC championship game appearances in 9 uears with 2 wins is pretty dang impressive. If the chips had fallen favorabley, we could have played for the National championsip, but we haven’t had the media luck of LSU or Florida by leapfrogging. We have always been leapfrogged ourselves for whatever reason that is out of our control.

A few tidbits about 2009…
UGA’s opponents in the Alabama, Florida, and Georgia Tech games scored 42 points off of turnovers. UGA also missed 2 field goal opportunities. So in those blowouts… UGA spotted the opposing teams 48 points.
The decimated UGA team was not the better team against Alabama or Florida. We could not win in the trenches… and the fate was sealed. But the blowouts were due to turnovers.
IF we can take care of the ball deep in our territory with good game management, we will have a fighting chance in the 4th quarter of every game.
IF we can get strong, productive play from the DE’s, we will beat OK State, Arky, & GT. And we will have a fighting chance in the 4th quarter against UF.
2 big IF’s. But they are truths. A healthy bulldawg team is as good as any team in the nation. And can win on any given Saturday given the ability to protect the ball and produce good special teams play.

OK ST? I hope not. Lets wait till we see the Vegas line the week of the game. It is rare for them to miss if the spread is +4 or better for the hometeam. Anyone know the line as of today?
Not Arkansas…never will we lose to that coward of a coach. He may have already quit by the time we play Arkansas. And he will leave town sometime after midnight.

So, AJC prints yet another meaningless (and probably stolen) article with a preseason prediction from some douche-bag who calls himself Mr. SEC. Lovely. AJC, your days are numbered, just like the other rags who have bitten the dust lately. I remember when this was a newspaper, not a tabloid.

Georgia at Oklahoma State
This just isn’t one of the biggest games in the Big 12 to open the 2009 season, it’s one of the biggest in the country. OSU comes into the game ranked in the top 10 in just about every national poll while Georgia is in just about every top 15.
Two years ago the Bulldogs mauled the Cowboys to open the season but that won’t be the case this year. OSU has everything in place (returning talent, favorable schedule) to make a run at a BCS bowl game, if not the national championship.
Georgia lost some serious offensive talent, but they’re still a top level SEC school. Joe Cox is the name to remember. He tries to replace Matthew Stafford at QB.
The new Boone Pickens Stadium is christened in style.
Final score: Oklahoma State 32, Georgia 17

Hey KJ…how many unsportsmanlike penalties did those timeouts draw? How ’bout that magnificent end zone dance, retard?? Just like your team, you’re playin’ a game you just can’t win, son. It is Richts big regret and it won’t be going away anytime soon.

djawja- Garner overrated, not many players he coached in the NFL??!!
1st- he’s the d-line coach, so those are the only players he coaches.
2nd- how abuot, D.Pollack, J.Sullivan, C.Grant, G.Anderson, C.Johnson, Q.Moses, K.Golston, M.Howard, N.Clemons, A.Cochran, P.Daniels, J.Ferguson, R.Geathers, R.Seymour, M.Stroud? (That’s 15 in the 10 seasons he’s been D-line Coach)
Not to mention he will probably have 2 1st rounders this year in J.Owens & G.Atkins.
Check your facts before making stupid statements you can’t back up. By your handle I suspect you’re not a Dawg fan anyway.

The Jackettes dismanteled UGA’s defense??? What an stupid comment…UGA dismantled themselves….it was all self inflicked. No tackling was the biggest problem. Tech took advantage as any team would

Think 10-2 is realistic and could surprise if things fall into place. We have beaten Fla the year after they have won a NC. The Jackettes? hahaha yeah, right after all their smack talk and “rings”. Arkansas is a possibility just because of where they sit on the schedule and should be better than advertised. If we are not careful, could be a landmine. The other loss? Possibly an upset at Auburn. Okie State? doubt it. Bottom line SEC vs Big 8….nuff said….

Lord of the Gay Lizzards……one thing is for sure, the rivalry is hot as ever. two time outs will not go unforgotten. its been back and forth the last few years so get off the “we own you” BS. We said the same thing in the 70/80’s when we went 19-5 vs FLA. It all turns and if you look at the series, you have a period of back and forth each year before the other starts another streak of wins. Just like it always has been

I love Georgia, born and raised. But CMR is too soft. Bad as I was us to win one I don’t think he will bring that crystal ball to athen. CWM is a terrible dc, with those two in mind GEORGIA will NEVER win one with those two. Like others he can’t beat florida, until then espn will downplay the daegs and cmr will never get the respectg some say he desreves, but to me he hasn’t earned it other than beating people who don’t matter. He’s way to SOFT. Barely got a title at FSU and now the same at UGA, with eaqual if not at times better talent, both acc and SEC. LOOK GOOD ON PAPER AND A BABY CRAP PAMPER ON FIELD.

If Richt loses 4 games this season, and, if one of those losses is to old Fat Boy in Atlanta, Richt and everyone else will figure out real quick that he ain’t loved as much as he thinks he is.

Hey, yep, the gators are an awesome team for sure. However, anything can happen! Any team can win on any given day…remember Ole miss last yr. beating the Gators. They came back and kicked bootie for sure. Just remember, gators are playing alot of cupcake teams this season…watch out for the injury bug! Ya,know, the Dawgs has had to deal with alot of injuries in the past several seasons. (of which can ruin things) Hopefully, the bug wont bite the Dawgs this yr! Tupaucism of the day! Gators will NOT go undefeated!

A friend of mine brought up an interesting observation, comparing last year’s Falcons with this year’s Bulldogs. He said that the Falcons, because so little was expected of them; just went out there, played loose, and had fun and because of that they overachieved a bit. He said that if UGA takes the same approach next season, they’ll be successful. But if they come out all tight and if Bobo tries to micromanage Cox and the offense instead of just letting him learn as he goes, then it’s going to be a long season! I agree with my friends assessment. We’ll see how the season plays out.

Jeff – what does UGA beating UF in 97 and 07 have to do with this year? And the 2 timeouts were nothing compared to Richt losing control of his team and nearly starting a riot. Think about what UGA’s reaction would be if UF did that. You guys would go absolutely ape sh*t and want Urban’s head… probably literally.
I realize I’m asking a lot, but let’s be realistic for just a moment. This UF defense is about as close to an NFL defense that a college team can get. And one of the best players in the history of college football is leading the offense. The odds are probably against them going undefeated, but it’s going to be a fun ride. The only team on the schedule that can match up with them athletically is LSU and they have issues of their own.
That being said, I’m not sure why I see so many predictions that have UGA losing to Ok St and GT. Ok St has never heard of defense and doesn’t have the depth of athletes. GT beats UGA once a decade and Richt and co. will figure out their gimmicky offense. LSU drew up the blueprints. And UGA always plays better when they’re flying under the radar. I say UGA goes 9-3 and goes to the Capital One Bowl. Not a bad season considering the schedule. How’s that for objectivity?

I stick by what I said up top. But, that lord of the gay lizards thing is funny. Three time outs at the end is far worse than the end zone thing because Meyer cried about sportsmanship for an entire year… even wrote about it in his book… then turned around and showed his arse. Besides, as I have always maintained, UGA was hyper-penalized for the incident and still won. Two double personal fouls in that game for 140 yards or something crazy like that.
